I started a new game with Sicily, and the Pope is kicking wholesale ass all over Europe. He took Florence, then Durazzo, then flippin' Tunis, and finally Algiers. Then for some insane reason Spain attacked him, and now His Holiness is heading an army to Iberia, with two Sicilian armies in tow. I love the Pope.
Spain has a crazy hard on for Sardinia, so if the Pope took it they might have attacked it out of some crazed error in judgement because they SUPER DUPER want that damn island.
Nah, I took Sardinia and Corsica before the Pope could... but Spain was allied to the Moors, so maybe they took revenge for Gregory's conquest of Algiers and Tunis.

49:51 Up until the Industrial Revolution, cities mainly grew because more people immigrated to them than died from them. By the way, the straight at the north end of Denmark is the Skagerrak. It's a cool enough sounding word that I thought someone here might want to know it.
Those merchants are nice but that's a big chunk of income that can potentially spontaneously die. Feels like they will start needing an assassin entourage for protection.
1. Age of consent would've been much, much lower around then, where marriages were more for political gain than for anything else. 2. The age of consent in Denmark now is apparently 15 (18 if with "anybody whom the minor was entrusted to for education or upbringing"), so 17'd be perfectly fine technically even today. :P
When excommunication occurred it meant that the priests and bishops in the territory of the offending noble were still loyal to the pope and would not offer any spiritual succour to the said noble. This was Henry's problem with the priests in England - he needed to form his own religion with priests loyal to the state not to Rome
I just learned of this game and am obsessed right now lol. Freaking Milan started a war against France. I decide to join and those mfers leave France along as soon as I take a city. Now the France and the holy empire have teamed up against me. My English army is fighting the hell but now I have the Portuguese invading. I’m lowkey pissed
Of course the Hungarians got to keep their cardinal, the pope excommunicates rulers not nations. The king of hungary dun goofed and attacked Vienna showing he wasn't a good catholic. Thus the only thing good catholics can do is to liberate his cities and bring them back into Christendom. The average peasant is still a catholic and deserves to have their soul looked after even if their leader is a fool.
My preferred way of controlling the papacy is assassination. I usually park an assassin just outside Rome and kill every pope elected that doesn't like me. This happened 8 turns straight before I finally had a agreeable pope lol Once had a general that was 10 command, 10 chivalry, 10 loyalty, and 8 piety. He had thee historic battles on the campaign map. I finally retired him to a castle but retirement killed him in 2 turns leaving his 16 year-old, 4 chivalry son to command. aww, memories!
I recommend building the town guards in all of your towns and replace the current garrison with town militia with free upkeep. This could free up quite a bit of your units and possible save you buckets of ducats per turn. Love the series so far...so many memories. Have you every played the Stainless Steel Mod?

We have the best comments section. A lot of people have been saying that. In fact just the other day, Adam McCluskey announced he's not leaving our comments section.
I always call a crusade on gaza, and only when it becomes a fortress. It is the only decent castle in the region. You start in the mid east with a strong military base. Until then i call crusades on european factions that have been excommed. Usually milan.
if you want Steve to become faction heir, send Charles on a bit of a homemade crusade where he may or may not die in the end to rank up the next guy in line
The faction heir is selected on a primogeniture basis, so eldest son by blood inherits. The only time this seems to not be the case is when a king's eldest son isn't of age when the king dies, at which point it goes to other relatives within the family tree. How exactly that's determined I'm not sure. Adopted sons never inherit unless they're literally the only other eligible member of a family, if memory serves. But it's also been forever since I played lots and lots of Medieval 2, so I could be wrong.
No Jon you're wrong about the Pope being fine with you counter attacking in a war. At the very start of the game, Scotland attacked me when I was playing as England and tried and miserably failed it take out one of my cities, and I went up and sieged Edinburgh and I got excommunicated for it.
Someone probably already told you this but your relations with everyone goes down steadily on Hard and Very Hard, so you need to keep a diplomat handy to gift up your relations with key allies/friends.

I know it's a bit late but excommunications Always happened against a current faction LEADER. Not the entire country, just that guy. This explains why there is still an Hungarian cardinal in Rome.
in my games I often get attacked by another Christian faction and the pope tells me to drop it or I'll be excomunicated... while I'm literally trying to fight an army in the middle of my own country... and the catapults they brought are definitely not just here to unrust the wheels
32:50 It isn't a country that gets excommunicated, it's a person; when you say that "Hungary has been excommunicated," what that means is that the Hungarian king has been excommunicated; that's why the Hungarian cardinal is allowed to stay. Not sure if the game simulates that, though; if the Hungarian king was killed, would that mean that Hungary was no longer excommunicated?
That's a shame. I loved the RTW series (and it made me play the game and finish it again), but the game is so easily exploitable it's not even funny. Something like a Shogun 2 campaign would be far better IMO.
Admiral Jon I have recently won a Seleucid campaign on Very Hard while being allied with no one, the Seleucid cities (and those in close proximity) are just too good economically. Plus the AI is kinda bad, so all you need is a few phalanxes, a bit of light cavalry, hire a few units of Cretan Archers (very important) and after you get to upgrade walls, its pretty much game over.
I love that in this game brains are sexy. (being smart) The princesses get charm when and effectively more attractive the more diplomacy and better deals they do.
Jon, this is an old video now, but you do realise that when a country gets excommunicated the Church inside that country stops doing church things (see England’s excommunications).
I found out something interesting. if you have a crusading army moving through enemy Christian faction territory and they attack the crusading army they get auto excommunicated. so always match crusading armies through enemy Christian factions.
Fun fact: The game's representation of Budapest is historically highly inaccurate. At the time of these events Budapest did not exist. The city at the time of the game was called BUDA. It was unified with neighboring PEST and OBUDA in 1873. Until then Buda represented the political capital of Hungary, so the region in the game should actually say Buda region. :)
14:59, That's not entirely true. Only on very hard the natural relation change only degrades relation. Easy moves it to perfect, normal moves it neutral, and hard moves it to bad. (So if you have an abysmal relation on hard, time will improve it to bad)
Alas, no. The Pope is still the Pope, and will get mad at you for warring with other Catholics. But his weakness is money. If you keep giving the Papal States gifts of florins, you can keep Papal approval up through just about anything.
Basically when your Cardinal becomes Pope they change faction to the Papal States. They do sometimes show some favor towards you, but it's unclear whether part of that is coming from your faction or whether it all comes from the fact that you vote for them.
No, since the HRE are massively far away from the ideals of the Holy Roman Empire, they are more like 'That wannabe Rome that's not really Rome but definitely isn't Rome', whilst the Byzantines more fit the 'That part of Rome that's not really Rome but still is Rome'.
None Of your Business ok i see, so the hre is rome but not rome cause its definitly not rome, the byzantines is rome minus rome, and russia i none of the following, they just liked the name
I'd suggest considering seeing if you can marry off your princess to Poland if they've got an available heir, to improve your alliance with them to a marriage alliance. Your relations are only at Good right now, which isn't much and the Imperials have been keeping a diplomat busy over there. I'm really concerned that they're a lot friendlier with the Imperials than you're thinking and may not choose your side if it comes to war. An awful lot of your plans rely on the Polish staying committed to you. I also think it might not be a bad thing strategically to ally with the Imperials. You've got Bruges yet to go, you're expanding into Russia which will open the east, and you have the Middle East to expand into as well once Egypt stabilizes. I really think you may be overestimating your position if it comes to war with the Imperials, so making them happy so they'll be looking at Milan or France instead is not a bad idea. Plus they do have other allies. You may end up with war in too many directions if you're not careful.
maybe those peasants have the spirit of Captain Nero within them....perhaps they should be included in an army without a general......and we could all pretend if someone's promoted they come from the peasants? I can't imagine that they would auto become the captain of an army......but still! You should take it under consideration lol

No, since the HRE are massively far away from the ideals of the Holy Roman Empire, they are more like 'That wannabe Rome that's not really Rome but definitely isn't Rome', whilst the Byzantines more fit the 'That part of Rome that's not really Rome but still is Rome'.
None Of your Business ok i see, so the hre is rome but not rome cause its definitly not rome, the byzantines is rome minus rome, and russia i none of the following, they just liked the name
you can change your heir by clicking on the guy in the family tree i believe
Your videos showed my ignorance in this game, especially with the merchants.
@Jon - kings get excommunicated, not countries
I really can't watch video after video seeing Bruges right next to you not taken, so I'm just skipping forward from here to see what happens.
French Support also means free reign on Britain. More Trade, more 💰
Why don't you go for Bruges?
same reason as building inns instead of recruiting free upkeep units
