33:05 "Gaza will be an excellent point to defend against any, theoretical, large invasion force that might assault..." I wonder who he might be talking about, The Mongol Horde only wants to peacefully visit the empire of the great Vatinius...
But Temujin, I have spoken to survivors from Samarkand who report that you slaughtered thousands in response to the murder and humiliation of diplomats, owing to your view that diplomats are under Tengri's protection. You keep a Ger of thousands of slave women as consorts. Further, the Brutii Empire was dissolved when Christian views on Romanism dominated. Why should we trust your intentions?
in my experiance the message from the pope is a cease fire for both sides. on one occasion when i was attacked by the HRE, the pope sent themessage, one of my settlements was then attacked and the HRE was excomunicated
Wouldn't it be more accurate to call his archers "direct fire" since they have clear sight on their target? Indirect fire is when you fire on an unseen target located by an ally that got sight on it, no?
Guilhem Schenkeveld Well, technically it should just be "missile" or "ranged" guys. They can do both direct and indirect fire so calling it either one would be a bit like calling your car "reverse" or "forward"
To be fair to the factions trying to get Valencia. El Cid is a beast of a general, especially if he sallies out. Hes like an 8 star general on offense. And his garrison is tough.

*Entry 15* I have finally arrived in Esfahan. My first stop there was the nearest Mosque for Jumu'ah and then to the inn. I am rather pleased with how my studies in Turkish, Persian, and Arabic have turned out despite the relatively short time. After having rented a room for one week, I set out for the Seljuk Archives. I discovered some rather important information about the family of Alexis Tablaris. For one, they were captured when they were mistaken for an invading army. The number captured was 91 and 90 of them were executed. The one that wasn't was spared after entertaining Sultan Alp Arslan by beating the gardener-executioner in a foot race to the palace gates. That one, Presbyter Gaars(?) Tabellarios, was appointed Minister of Muslim-Christian Relations (which might explain the number of Greek-looking children here). Furthermore, they sent the heads of those executed to the ten who were never exiled with a note explaining everything. *Entry 16* I have arrived home to discover my liege angry. Looking over his shoulder, I saw a letter from Diakon Niels reporting that I showed him the Venus Altar. To diffuse the situation, I told half the truth, only the request for the chapel. Alfonso admitted that he'd rather me be his heir because his idiot son knows not the capital. Anyway, I saw a book about the history of the Umayyads, the Muslim dynasty of Andalusia. I thought "this looks interesting!" so I started reading it. I look forward to reading more of it.

Since the dawn of Man, there has been an ongoing feud in the family of Gighz. Two brothers, Theez and Yu, each leading a faction of the Gighz family, have fought for absolute control over the other. Sometimes, it is Theez Gighz who gets the upper-hand, but soon enough his brother Yu Gighz finds a weakness in his brother's strategy and evens the odds. Will there ever be peace between Theez Gighz and Yu Gighz? Only time will tell.
You know what makes no sense in medieval 2 time passes at about 2 years per turn. And you can seize a town for like 9 turns that means a town can survive about 20 years while being in a siege
napoleon its 2 weeks a turn eg early june then late june.. time frame makes more sense but then theres a lot less civilisation development compared to empire
I've heard that in vanilla Medieval II 2handed units have some kind of glitch that makes them pretty much useless because they tend to block way more often than they attack while fighting. Correct me if I am wrong but in that case your Norse Axemen would be useless. Recruit more Peasants !!!!
5 years late but if you still play this game like me it's goof to know there isn't actually a glitch with 2handed units, instead what you're seeing is slower animations that make it seem like a glitch. The game engine already calculates the attacks and guard effects then plays the animation after
I spent a lot of time reading up on this and just found this comment. It isn't a glitch (not intended, either, but...). It's a balancing error. When a soldier attacks (in melee), there are several possible outcomes: Blocked by shield; Blocked by armor; Blocked by defense skill; Hit lands. In the first two, the 'victim' is unaffected. In the last one, the 'victim' takes the hit. It's the third option that matters here. In the case of a hit being deflected by Defense Skill, the 'victim' has his current animation interrupted by a parry animation. This isn't a glitch. The reason I called it a balancing error is that every two-handed unit in the game has an appallingly low Defense Skill number (despite wielding weapon with superior reach). If you raise the DS number on two-handed units, they will perform much better and more in-line with their costs. P.S. Because two-handed units forgoe shields (to place a second hand on their weapon), their reliance on the two remaining stats (armor and DS) increase.
LOOOL I just found a new exploit i guess... When you're under siege and you have a general in the city, repeatedly attack with only selecting the general and he will get random chivalry traits i've gotten a 7/10 Dread general to 1/10 chivalry, it's amazing altough I don't prefer using it in a proper campaign but sometimes it's really fun to do.
If a Polish settlement is on the crusade list you are able to buy off the Pope if you have enough money and he will go for it. I have had the Pope declare crusades on non-excommunicated factions for me before. You can use this to get around the whole excommunicated problem and make your generals better + recruit those powerful crusader knights
You should really pull back from Italy for now. Trash everything in Genoa for gold and give the city to the pope or give it to the HRE and hope it starts a war. Also I think public order is at peak decrease when the religions are at about 50%, the unrest is more people fighting each other.
Jon, when will you learn that archers are direct fire and not indirect? indirect means that you hit something while not directly aiming at it. archers aim directly at their targets ergo makes them direct fire.
Feel free to either "get ambushed" by the polish if you see an army go into hiding or to attack them in your own territory, those don't count as you being the aggressor, or they never have for me. In fact if you are ambushed it counts against the faction ambushing. Also, you can freely attack any blockading fleet at your ports without papal intervention.
Also if you have blockaded a port, you don't have to withdraw your blockading fleet. I absolutely strangled an enemy in one playthrough because I had all his ports blockaded and he can't try to take my cities, because Pope, but he can't get any money either. :D
I recently downloaded this game because of your series ( and steam had a sale) . I'm slowly getting the hang of it , but it's actually an addictive game.

England's "wooden wall" was a doctrine focused on overwhelming naval superiority, preventing an invasion of england, ireland, and scotland by foreign powers. Crossing the channel isn't easy, and longer routes are highly vulnerable to english raids on your transports & shipping. Caen would be one of the few places you could train a navy to cross the channel on mainland europe, which is a reason england put such an emphasis on holding it. As long as england has caen, and properly funds it's navy, it's heartland is safe and it doesn't have to worry about things like "being invaded" and is free to !@#$ over mainland europe to it's leisure.

The Pope isn't called "The Corrupt" for nothing. Jon hasn't been greasing enough palms lately, and there's a certain Danish Pope who wouldn't mind a new Cathedral or two....
I can't prove it, but I suspect from some behaviors in my own game that the Pope does issue the mission to both sides. But Jon violated the original demand, when he did the assault on Thorn. So now the demand is escalated from "stop or the Pope won't like you as much" to "stop or you'll be excommunicated." If John just sends his troops back to Thorn and concentrates on strengthening his borders, I don't think Poland can attack him without making the Pope mad at them in turn.
Bah! When excommunication becomes a problem, just invade Rome; problem solved. Remember, as the size of the army increases, the number of situarions it can't solve approaches 0.
"Going therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost (Matt 28:19)." Do not neglect the duty of every Christian man, such as those of Denmark, to bring the word of Jesus to those who would otherwise never know.
As long as you have plenty of decent spearmen (Sorry Danes) and a collection of heavy infantry and Acre as upgraded as possible that theoretical Mongol Horde that is totally not on it's way (I don't know what you are talking about what early warning message? I DEFINITELY didn't see a message about the Mongols, Nope) is easy. They rely heavily on cavalry and a good spear collection in the gate will massacre them. As England right now I am succeeding at holding them off despite the fact the Pope just decided that the Mongol capital is what needs a good crusade and has demanded that my king (Currently bashing the HRE who attacked me) HAS to go on this crusade or we will be excommunicated. AND THE ONLY PEOPLE I ATTACKED WERE THE SCOTTISH NEAR THE START OF THE GAME!!! Everyone else has attacked me, what dicks.
Probably not. Considering the territory they would have to go through to reach me had I not gone to Egypt they could easily die out if the nations in that part of the world put up a fight. Typically however the massive armies they have just seem to roll over the Turks and Egyptians because they were not prepared and once the Mongols have a few towns and castles they can be as tough to beat as any other faction. Their big difficulty comes from the fact that they START with 3-5 full stack armies of fast and powerful archer cavalry that all have 2 silver chevrons of experience. As I pointed out a human player in a castle can hold them off easily (with many losses) but the AI just isn't smart enough to build armies capable of taking towns back from them.
King Alfonso VI I've seen their sorry remains stagger into my territory... then again, I've always left Turkey alone, so they would've been at full strength to deal with the Pony Horde.
The Moors usually ally with everyone and then just annoy you by sending small armies to block you off. I think it's because they can't really expand well into rebel territory and Spain, Sicily and Portugal are all generally tougher than them, so they can't afford to start any wars.
In this particular case, he knew there was only the one infantry unit to deal with, so no way for the Poles to man the interior walls. But in a larger context you do bring up an interesting point I'll have to remember, save ladders for the interior walls if there's going to be infantry to slaughter there.
If the inner gates weren't conveniently open and the ram was set on fire from wall defenses, wouldn't this attack have failed regardless of anyone being on the inner walls?
dragmire3D Ladders provide less cover on approach than towers but cannot be destroyed by flaming arrows but can be moved up to the walls at greater speed. Also, as someone else mentioned, they can be redeployed on the inner wall defences of a fortress or citadel.
I wonder, will he decide to take Antioch, well, I did in my Venetian campaign, and after 6 sieges and thousands people killed, I`ll say it`s not worth it.
21:15 If I had to guess, I'd say religious unrest is a factor, not of how much of the region is a different religion to the owners, but of how much of it is a different religion from the others in the region. So a region in an Islamic country with 90% Catholic would have less unrest than one that has 50% Catholic and 50% Islamic, because Catholics and Muslims hate each other. That's just my guess based on what I'm seeing in this series, though.
47:47 "grow horses in gaazaaa" lol! grow horses :P imma get some horse seeds to plant in my yard, grow ME some horses!! XD but, how do u harvest them?!?!?
Loving the playthrough, Jon, it's got me playing again myself, but I've got to ask: How hard are you savescumming to show us an unbroken string of agent successes? I've got to reload 5 or 6 times to get a success off a 74% chance, and you're going with one successful coinflip after another. How have you tamed the malicious and hateful RNG?
Is it possible the guy to the south can't build a watchtower specifically because he's on the road? Maybe the game doesn't let you build them directly onto roads themselves because they'd block them, so you have to step off to the side of the road to be able to build one? Not played the game, so largely theorising, but it's plausible?
i am really getting pissed at this glitch, randomly during my games settlements will start being ai manged even though when i started the game i turned ai-managment off, i have looked everywhere and i couldn't find a solution to this problem can anyone help me?
BRO! When you checked the power rankings to check England’s number of regions, you actually selected Venice! Go back and look, you clicked Venice, their flags are similar
yes in the previous ep you looked at Venice and thought you counted states owned by England .. similar coloured arms but hells bells dont you know the 3 lions of england or something :) ps Im watching these because rome remastered is Too Slow coming out lol
Belgaltair probably be a bad idea for them to stab through their friends to get involved, but on a serious note, if they break formation it opens them up for more devastating attacks to their flanks
Can I just say that you are an amazing let's player sir? Even if it's a game I haven't heard of or might not think I'd enjoy you bring awesome energy. Looking forward to seeing many more games in the future!
33:05 "Gaza will be an excellent point to defend against any, theoretical, large invasion force that might assault..."

The mongols are the tribe of peace!
Probably Timurids.
The Mongol Horde I heard something about the so called "Golden horde" coming. I hope the Turks can hold the "Great Raper" back from our women.
the Mongols are pretty good
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF INFANTRY THOUGH
Who would have guessed that someone with "corrupt" in their title would betray the interests of their homeland?
in my experiance the message from the pope is a cease fire for both sides. on one occasion when i was attacked by the HRE, the pope sent themessage, one of my settlements was then attacked and the HRE was excomunicated
I sure hope Jon doesn't call his archers 'indirect fire' in this episode.
Hahahahaha. Good one.
Although, to be fair: They are at least capable of indirect fire
Maybe they hear him and misinterpret his words, and that's why they keep using the flaming arrows?
Wouldn't it be more accurate to call his archers "direct fire" since they have clear sight on their target? Indirect fire is when you fire on an unseen target located by an ally that got sight on it, no?
Guilhem Schenkeveld Well, technically it should just be "missile" or "ranged" guys. They can do both direct and indirect fire so calling it either one would be a bit like calling your car "reverse" or "forward"
Of course. Heard that John!? just call those glorious bastards "archers" as they're supposed to !
You should change Dongola's name to Ivarstead! took long enough to get there.
Nah. Ivarstead is the Mongol Horde
To be fair to the factions trying to get Valencia. El Cid is a beast of a general, especially if he sallies out. Hes like an 8 star general on offense. And his garrison is tough.
It's coming. Is Jon ready? Of course not!
ALL HAIL THE MONGOL HORDE!
Ha, Jon still thinks Venice is England.
Great Britant my and my brothers are always ready
And the only faction that actually stands between Jon and the Mongols is about to be killed off by Jon.
10 turns to Mongol Horde the countdown will start! xD
Baron von Hitler medyś I will die laughing as he's massacred by the mongols. Then the plague will start to hit. And eventually the Aztecs when he goes to America. Followed by the timurids.
The moral of the story is: Jon dies.

ohhhhhhhh we are serious about peace
The Moors, historically known for their... worshiping of the Pope?
it's called not causing a crusade
United Nations
It's called Hoping that the M2TW pope behaves rationally
how do we get in in your religion
You guys are Great Actors.
Just realised he always says king even though ya know it's not the king
Alan McDonald Been doing that since RTW, where many of the factions didn't even have kings!
Its bugging me for ages.
In my game, France keeps attacking me. You'd think after I sacked Paris and left them with only Dijon they'd back off.
If a Polish settlement is on the crusade list you are able to buy off the Pope if you have enough money and he will go for it. I'm a little late, but here's my knowledge on why Caen is so important. I'm an American, one interested in history but still take this with a grain of salt.
I love Jon's pun titles
so excited for this series
Wish this could be a 3 a week series!
It truly is a happy Birthday. Thank you Jon
Hey Jon, do you ever build Merchant Forts? They're pretty awesome!
I just love the amount of accounts themed to this channel.
It's not a bad idea to have a blacksmith in frontier cities, milita may not be that good but most of them can get armour upgrades which at least makes them slightly more durable.
At this point the town motto for Ourhaus should be "Fine as it is"
"You're now entering Ourhaus. Ourhouse: Fine As It Is" xD
30:46 that wall of death mosh tho lol
Jon, try to stay above 2,000fl in case another guild pops up.
Noone suspects the Portugese inquisition!
In smaller battle where your army is Dominant you should zoom in on the combat, maybe it's just me but I love TW little 1 on 1 battles, i think Medieval 2 is the first game that had little animations for the fighting instead of random flailing.
Apparently the inability to build watchtowers is a common bug in MTW1 and MTW2. Sorry!
Bit of a cheat, but if you build a fort on a valuable trade resource like ivory, you can put 20 merchant in there that are all trading. Last time i played medieval 2 i had 15k merchant trade per turn.
Replaying to remember this forever
30:43 "All around me are familiar faces".....
So did the Pope issue the same quest to Poland? If not, than what the hell is up with the pope being mad at Jon? Poland started the war right?
Yeah, but the Pope is a dick. No exceptions.
The Pope isn't called "The Corrupt" for nothing. Jon hasn't been greasing enough palms lately, and there's a certain Danish Pope who wouldn't mind a new Cathedral or two....

Bigger Army Diplomacy always solves everything!
Can someone explain to me how the Pope is angry at Jon for waging a defensive war against Poland, with a Danish Pope?
Easy: the Pope hates you, play as Russia instead, no Pope no problems.
Or the Byzantines. Problem is I love heavy-infantry focused factions, which pretty much means Christian factions in this game.
I think you need to send diplomats to everyone at war with you, just to buy time to rebuild in peace.
22:00 I thought the first fortress battle was against Sicily?
That wasn't actually a fortress it was just a castle that looked like a fortress.
No intro with Danish accent-dislike
Fake Dane. This mustn't be the real Jon Vatinius..
the Prophet Of the pasta gods I already have and my descendant Jon Marston is already on the case
Tell me about the pasta gods. Do you have a holy book for me to read? Also I do agree, go discover something that our ancestors already discovered!
Since you are gonna be there could you.. i dunno maybe start Communism?

Do not neglect the duty of every Christian man, such as those of Denmark, to bring the word of Jesus to those who would otherwise never know.
22:53 Mystery woof? Did Jon swap Tabby for a dog?
That's one of the noises the game makes to simulate the sounds of a strangely empty city.
I have the game, I would know.
Snorlax Upgrading a cat to level 2 makes it a dog.
He didn't "pick up" Chivalrous in Rule, he lost it and got demoted to just Chivalrous.

dragmire3D Ladders provide less cover on approach than towers but cannot be destroyed by flaming arrows but can be moved up to the walls at greater speed. Also, as someone else mentioned, they can be redeployed on the inner wall defences of a fortress or citadel.
Not every general is a king ...
I wonder, will he decide to take Antioch, well, I did in my Venetian campaign, and after 6 sieges and thousands people killed, I`ll say it`s not worth it.
Genuinely disappointed no one in the comments has explained what's so great about Caen yet!
Of course I Caen be serious. And stop calling me Shirley!
Thanks for the video!
Jon for the love of the Holy Roman Empire stop calling Generals 'Kings' in battle.
Could your assassin help Venice? Perhaps knocking off that princess as practice, then the leader of that army on Venice's doorstep?
Was that a dog barking at 22:53 or am I going mad?
great video Jon
22:52 DOG!?
47:47 "grow horses in gaazaaa" lol! grow horses :P

Jarrad Scarborough Ask Tesco.
Pagan magic. It's all pagan magic. Nothing else makes sense.
You see, when a pope is young, godless, misanthropic, reactionary, and has parent issues, his prayers pull off a lot of miracles
Last time I was this early Lasagne was still made with beef.
Kept watching, glad you figured it out. Love the videos
30:37 last man standing

De Parapluman Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue
Not French, but I'd venture to guess that they're there for the film festival
I don't understand why in this game the first line is the only one who fight. The others just stay there waiting for who knows what!
Jon the Milanese have Genoese crossbowmen, they could easily win a bridge battle
Its funny how you dont prioritize training armies.
I think Caen is wanted because of the Croissants they make.
down in egypt, you could build a fort on the most valuable resource and have a literal stack of merchants in it ;D
Disband some mercs
you should try upgrading stockholm ASAP. the top tier of mines and sea trading can have you earning 6-7k per turn.
He should also prioritize taking Krakow and Prague away from the Polish, those places generate loads of money.
Caen in real life has a great port
isn't pronounced Caen= Con, because there is a place called Cannes= Can
Hi guys and welcome to World War Goth.
sorry I'm late what happened to Caen
Can you use an assassin on the inquisitor?
Yes...but Jon's assasins are terrible, and the Inquisitor is good. Plus, if he gets caught the Pope will be angry.
So apparently, Caen has pretty beaches
Crusade for Sicily!
*Mongolian throat singing intensifies*
