At some point in this game everyone will attack you. Even allies. Especially allies. But you know that already. Everyone in the comments has played hundreds of campaigns. It's fun.
You need to wait for the gates to close before ending a sally battle, if the gates don't close the battle auto resolves it as if all your troop where outside the walls and attacked the enemy forces.
I read on a couple of forums the system is kind of fussy, and you'll know when the sally is over because the text to exit will not say if you quit you will lose, the text will say draw.
Journal Entry ~ I haven't really written anything here because I've been so busy seeing my friends die in battle. First the great slaughter of Lasagne, then the defense of Vikinggrad where the BLOODY KING MADE US STAND OUTSIDE OF THE WALLS AND FIRE WHILE THE INFANTRY STAYED UP. Not to mention that we were defending against fast shock cavalry! Well, I have to go back to seeing my friends get slaughtered because of tactical failures. If stuff will go on like this I need to get a city renamed after me or my archer kin...
Steve, for our newspaper, we want a soldiers perspective on the war with Poland. And I don't mean the perspective of some kid who'd vomit if he had but a shot of mead, we want a true warrior! We want the perspective of a man who's seen frontline action. So may I ask, would you tell us about your thoughts on the War of Polish Aggression?
It just sounds a bit annoyed and sarcastic. I want an article to capture the true horrors of war. Something that will make those rear-echelon patriots think again before sending someone else to die.
Well, I truly think it's a waste to send in men for no reason other than to die. On the front lines there are many tactical failures happening everywhere, in Russia and Poland. Everyday I see my friends and comrades die beside me for no good cause. They are alive one moment, then dead the other. Of course I love Denmark but we patriots need to think again when it comes to war. Instead of having war, we should think of strengthening our alliances that we already have, even when ties seem very strong, one of these cases was of course Poland. I can't foresee when this war will end or who will have less casualties on their side. Our tactical failures will land most of us a grave in Dane, the Polish will lose but at what cost. One thing I do know for sure is that; war never changes. Thank you.
Thank you for your time Steve. Here you go! (Hands over a medal of St. Michael the Archangel) Pray for his protection before battle always. I'll pray for you always.
"...so you guys please attack these guys, you guys attack these guys, send in the horses, here comes all the arrows in the world and they should break like immediately."
I have to give you props good sir. Over the last idk 8 years I only really cared about watching the original Rome total war play throughs. Of course I would check out the latest game, but I would never really finish watching it. Not only did you get me to watch your barbarian invasion play through after the vanilla version, you have me 16 videos into a series about a game I have not watched a single video about before. If by the end of this series I find out you have a Rome 2 total way play through, I’ll actually watch it beginning to end unlike anyone else who played it when it was the new thing. Thank you for being my main source of entertainment during the 2020 lockdown
Me last episode: "No! Why would you sally out against pure cavalry with pure infantry!? That's the opposite of what you're supposed to do. Well at least he learned his lesson." Oh Jon... We give up.
I love this series and I know I'm commenting on an older episode, and since I learned a few things about the strategic-mode from you (like renaming cities is actually a thing), I felt like I should give some back... - Don't make your troops run unless they absolutely have to, ie; charging or pursuing. Running for no reason other than you want them to get into position faster, because waiting is not your thing, lowers their stamina and reduces their combat effectiveness. If you really don't like waiting that much, just make sure that their route/destination is secure and just fast forward, just keep your finger on the slow-down button so you can return to normal speed should the enemy so much as moves a single muscle. - Allow your ranged units to pick their targets by NOT telling them who to shoot at. This has two benefits; 1. They won't needlessly shoot at your own troops and they will automatically switch to a different target when your melee units engages their initial target. 2. They aren't going to pursuit targets that are retreating, potentially baiting your ranged units closer to their melee units. - Navigate through narrow paths (like in the castle) by drawing a thin line along the road itself. The Viking Raiders were avoiding going through the path as it would be physically impossible for them to get in there while maintaining their current depth/width/formation. By drawing a destination instead of just commanding them there, they would know that breaking their square-ish formation is okay as they will gladly form a neat file to get it where you're trying to squeeze them in.
Why not study the customs of the Germans? The culinary preferences of Japan? The courting practices of the Hindus? The trading practices of China? Anything less evil?
we already studied everything we can...or at least everything Space Romans are interested in, which is mostly war and leaving behind legacies that last for thousands of years
25:00 transcription of the battle speech of Brother Sigfrid, as translated from the "Chronica Danimarcae", written by Raehvinus of Hamburg. It seems like the princes of Kiev have finally grown the spine to challenge us into battle: in fact, Micoslav thinks himself brave and bold. I am eager to test the courage of this scismatic with the head of my mace! Today, victory is certain: what few enemies we face are good only for target practice. Onwards my men! Let us rid our city from these glorified brigands!
Jon's logic: A. Has the majority in the College of Cardinals. B. Knows that he can basically choose who will be the next Pope. Result: Looks like we are no longer in the running lead.
Something I noticed at 25:06 - is it normal for one unit to have so many different shield emblems? I would normally expect it to be more uniform. Thanks for the video!
If you get to it later in the video, sorry for the post, but you couldn't put those archers over the gate because you have the unit size set to high. Small or medium will fit anywhere, but the two larger unit sizes cause problems on smaller wall sections.
in response to the sally issue, this is why i always leave the battle timer on, if you sally and let the timer run out its a natural draw and not an autoresolved draw/lose
Citizens of Jewusawem! Wome is your fwiend! To pwoove our fwendship, it is customary at this time to welease a wongdooer from our pwisons. whom would you have me weelease?

It was unbelievably dumb of you to switch Hamburg from a fortress. It was the linchpin of your entire defensive line with 2 major factions. There was no scenario where switching iy was a good idea.
2 things; pulling your cavalry though enemy units you are attacking will help break them quicker, don't put your archers directly behind units, your men alter their aiming arc to really high and they do less damage.
thats not a pincer movement, it's just simple flanking. a pincer is retreating the middle and then spreading out tethe sides to surround and flank the enmies
Jon!! Don't know if you'll get this but in this vid, when you left the battle early in your sally battle, you wondered why you had taken extra losses. If i remember correctly, in medieval 2, when you left the battle the game pretended your men lost total control of themselves and forgot how to walk or something, so some of them die because, well, you left them alone. i think the only way to just get a draw is to have the timer on and let the timer run out; this happened to me a few times when the Ai was being stupid and wouldn't move, but I couldn't attack them. just saying! ^_^

jon, the units can't be deployed on those walls in Magdeburg cuz you have the unit size high. 120 units is too many for the small sections. love this series.
Around 12:00, you say the Rome: Total War AI is easier to draw into a stupid approach to wall defenses that will tear its units apart; as a player going back to 2004, I can tell you that the updates to Rome: Total War in the years following its initial release changed that; the Steam version of the game, now available only as part of the Rome Remastered package, has no such problem.

I have a question for the Medieval 2 experts out there. So, a combination of watching Jon's playthrough and intense nostalgia inspired me to go and buy M2: TW on Steam. However, I found once I launched a campaign that the speed at which the camera pans around the map is ridiculously fast. This goes for both mouse and arrow keys. I tried adjusting the scroll speed in settings, but this only seems to affect battles, not campaign. Adjusting the resolution, enabling/disabling Vsync was equally useless. Does anyone have any ideas for how to stop this extremely frustrating bug which is preventing me from enjoying this otherwise brilliant game?
I have a theory at why when the assassin is alone in the targets room he uses a snake instead of poison or a knife, he uses a snake because is the attempt fails the target will think a snake just wandered in their room rather than some one tried to assassinate me
Yep, seems like everyone chooses huge units, doesn't bother filing units down to fit narrow places or setting way points, then moans about the path finding in their videos. Watching units pushing through friendly units busy fighting is driving me crazy too!
Things for Jon to know: You can't deploy soldiers on a piece of wall for the whole unit to fit on it. Archers won't auto-fire at a unit that's in range, but will result in them hitting friendly units. Destroying siege equipment in a sally, won't remove it from from the enemies equipment. i.e. Sallying out to destroy a battering ram, only destroys it for that battle, and they can still attack with it on their next turn. If you have missile troops on guard mode, you can tell them to fire on someone and if they move out of range, the missile troops won't pursue to get them back in range again. That path in the Sicily castle, isn't actually able to be moved through. For some reason, it's always listed as blocked.
What does he mean by "indirect fire" (usually talking about archers). What is direct fire then? Also, this guy is a tactical genius! :D, but its interesting to watch.
In my game the Pope told me not to attack Hungry, then Hungry attacked my unit, I won the battle then got excommunicated by the Pope because *"I ATTACKED HUNGRY"*
These sallies just to chip at their forces really have not been worth it, AI's just gotten much much better and you can't roll up a line causing a mass route as easily
I just bought medieval total war 2 collection w/ kingdoms for £4 on steam summer sale but my shitty laptop can't even run it. Someone take my credit card before I buy Something that's a 'good deal'
He complains about not being able to move troops around, BUT HE HASN'T BUILT ROADS!! EDIT: He really should've improve all the town/city Milita buildings by now... 🙄
"you know what this war needs? MORE FRONTS" -Jon, and no other commander ever. I'm gonna be nervously excited to see how this all resolves!
teaandcharcoal Gallipoli and D-day would like to have a word with you.
At some point in this game everyone will attack you. Even allies. Especially allies.
But you know that already. Everyone in the comments has played hundreds of campaigns. It's fun.
So you've started a land war in Asia AND gone against the Sicilian's when death is on the line?
Copper Hamster Atleast it wasn't a battle of wits I suppose...
Inconceivable!!!
Can't believe I didn't like this comment when I watched the series the first time.
@@sharkofjoy very late but same

Crispy Mormon Is no one going to comment on your name??!! 😂😂😂😂
Joshua John Granada oddly enough this is one of the first times no one has mentioned it.
and yet, someone actually mentioned it.
Joshuagrahamception

EHEM, Joshua "mothefucking" graham!
I didn't know the true definition of "indecisive" before I started watching Jon
Many a true definition.
The Definition of "In the rear" Changed after RTWand M2TW
indirect fire in fact is very direct

Pray for his protection before battle always. I'll pray for you always.
For the love of god, Jon KEEP YOUR ARCHERS ON THE WALLS STOP PUTTING THEM IN DANGER
Didnt Jon say that Crossbowmen are better on the battlefield then on the walls. Plus they were well protected mostly during the battle.
I'd love to see this game end with Bruges still a rebel city.
That'll be Valencia!
Campaign ends with 92 year-old El Cid still chilling in Valencia.
Much like the real El Cid, he'll have already died but they just strap his armored corpse to a horse to scare everyone away.
That El Cid general's bodyguard is freaking tough.
When moving units through city streets, i find the pathing works better if you micro individual units instead of grouping them together.
*^This*
"Like there's some kind of total war going on" I am mad at myself for laughing at this.
romeinprogress as I'm fond of saying, the game is not called "partial war"
"...so you guys please attack these guys, you guys attack these guys, send in the horses, here comes all the arrows in the world and they should break like immediately."
-Every MATN total war battle
Very very nicely *indeed*
"Oh they will just melt in *seconds*"
and these should rout momentarily
don;t forget "hit them in the rear."

*Shows 6 units of Polish cavalry*
"They've brought 9 units of Polish cavalry!"
I couldn't carry on with this video after that. I mean i know Jon's strength isn't perception but *come on!*
(Joking btw of course i kept watching)
Yea Filthy Danes
Early in the episode public order is at 60%, later 41:30 public order is at 75%. Jon says public order will keep getting worse.
Danes didn't invent mathematics, so they probably think 2+2=Jesus
What makes things more irritable is that there is obviously eight units overall.
I love this series and I know I'm commenting on an older episode, and since I learned a few things about the strategic-mode from you (like renaming cities is actually a thing), I felt like I should give some back...

stop sallying, just let them attack the city ( especially a damn castle ) you said it yourself castles are difficult to take
a war between 2 large empires, the exact kind of thing we're looking for! now all we need are MORE factions getting involved!

(Begins sobbing uncontrollably)
and also for scientific stuff
(In a deeply offended and very angry shout)
WHAT THE F*** DOES WAR HAVE TO DO WITH SCIENCE!?!?!?
Hi Jon, Thanks for making great videos!

Ahh, remember in Rome 1 when Egypt stood right next to the wall....good times
Jon's logic:
A. Has the majority in the College of Cardinals.
B. Knows that he can basically choose who will be the next Pope.

Well, he didn't have a Preferati, so he can't become pope.
Something I noticed at 25:06 - is it normal for one unit to have so many different shield emblems? I would normally expect it to be more uniform.
Thanks for the video!
It is good that you got Boleslaw to come around to the Danish way of thinking before this mess began, he would've been a rough enemy to deal with
The Defense of Vikingrad 2 Electric Boogaloo
*sends ranged units out on the front lines against a horde of Russian cavalry... outside the walls*
thank you Jon for finally putting Bruges under siege

Just in case he finally got arrested for his lecherous lifestyle, I call for the release of Garios Tabellarios
Are you a Woman?

I don't care what people say about the graphics and how old the game is, I love this game! Even if it is 13 years old. :)
I prefer the look of older gritty dark graphics like this. The newer games units look like bad CGI in anime and they don't feel organic. In Med 2 the units feel real, gravity, animations, etc. It's also not obnoxiously bright and too colorful for the context of the game. I also prefer Diablo 1 and 2 classic for the same reason. D3 is a cartoon for kids. Same with classic Starcraft 1 compared to cartoony SC2.
Then there's the pricing nonsense of the newer games. Faction DLC, blood effects DLC, etc. Kingdoms is a solid respectable add-on pack for the price. Med 2 is from the Golden Age of gaming when all the best games came out on PC.
Graphics are but one element of the game. Newer games are dumbed down for simpler minds. While also having tons of manipulation using the cash shop/store model. Overall I don't like graphics of newer games except indie titles which have artistic style. Instead of the typical 4K CGI copy/paste engine, textures, and models.
Also there's mods. I mod the stuffing out of older games. I never installed the Med 2 graphics mod though because I never even considered it worth the effort. Newer games are more complicated with mods and are sometimes sabotaged by game app (Steam) updates. You don't own the newer game you purchased. They own it.
I don't understand why people focus so much on graphics when all of this nonsense is going on trying to monetize every little feature in a game you we don't even own as paying customers. TW is particular is mostly people playing offline campaigns and mods. Why do I need game app DRM hassle to waste my time?
It was unbelievably dumb of you to switch Hamburg from a fortress. It was the linchpin of your entire defensive line with 2 major factions. There was no scenario where switching iy was a good idea.
2 things; pulling your cavalry though enemy units you are attacking will help break them quicker, don't put your archers directly behind units, your men alter their aiming arc to really high and they do less damage.
feeling pretty nervous about this series, I feel like the Holy Roman Empire could just squish Denmark like a grape
thats not a pincer movement, it's just simple flanking. a pincer is retreating the middle and then spreading out tethe sides to surround and flank the enmies
Jon!! Don't know if you'll get this but
in this vid, when you left the battle early in your sally battle, you wondered why you had taken extra losses.
Jon, a major tip for getting units to path through cities. Having only one unit selected at a time when giving orders greatly improves their pathing. Also, liberal use of shift commands helps as well.
jon, the units can't be deployed on those walls in Magdeburg cuz you have the unit size high. 120 units is too many for the small sections. love this series.
The polish are a bit of a "thorn in his side"
All hell has broke lose this episode
dear god i love this series
I believe it will kind of simulate the retreat if you quit, albeit not very well
Around 12:00, you say the Rome: Total War AI is easier to draw into a stupid approach to wall defenses that will tear its units apart; as a player going back to 2004, I can tell you that the updates to Rome: Total War in the years following its initial release changed that; the Steam version of the game, now available only as part of the Rome Remastered package, has no such problem.
Why not spend some money to recruit a couple more units in Stettin? It's not under siege yet, and it could really use help.
Seleucid Campaign on RTW John, REEEEEEEE
Is this chaos around turn 50-60 a programmed thing? I've been playing Venice, and despite allying with p much everyone in the beginning I've ended up in the same total war position around turn 56 :s Maybe that's just the game saying "alright, you've had time to learn the game and build an empire; now let's see how you handle the REAL GAME!"
In my 7 years playing I have not found it fast, sorry idk there is a way to change
I have a theory at why when the assassin is alone in the targets room he uses a snake instead of poison or a knife, he uses a snake because is the attempt fails the target will think a snake just wandered in their room rather than some one tried to assassinate me
I got something in the broom cupboard that may help with the war effort
It's a bottle of "Polish Remover".
The archers have too many people to fit on that wall, bit of a problem when using the huge unit scale.
Yep, seems like everyone chooses huge units, doesn't bother filing units down to fit narrow places or setting way points, then moans about the path finding in their videos.
Watching units pushing through friendly units busy fighting is driving me crazy too!
Jon, not sure if you noticed, but there is a merchant by Ourhouse that is not yours.
Things for Jon to know:
You can't deploy soldiers on a piece of wall for the whole unit to fit on it.
For some reason, it's always listed as blocked.
oink!
Hello.
-how bout you do me piggy style ;) ?- *kinky boat noises*

Add armour upgrades to woodsmen they can become quite decent.

How did he check where he positioned those troups at Vikingrad?
Has Jon ever played Crusader Kings 2? I bet he'd love it.
Well you must be happy
You know that moment when you realize it's Thursday and Medieval 2: TW is getting another video.....Same for Sundays....
I think your unit size it a bit to big for the smaller side streets ?
Take Dongola and convert it to a city. You'll get about 1500-3000 florins in merchant trade alone from 2 ivory and 2 slaves.
Plot twist: hitler based the battle of Stalingrad off of the great battle of Vikingrad
Sorry Peasants Work I mean sailing has prevented me from commenting when Jon posts.
Admiral Jon No worries admiral! Denmark's seas call men to duty!
I was there too! But You were Sailing Something else....
Ello. Pole Axes for Pole Heads.
good video Jon
Please do an Empire Total War series :D
Time to eat some Polish sausage. Ok that came out slightly wrong.
