  • This one is admittedly a bit out of left field, but a few months back I thought that making something of a railroad network in my single player world in Minecraft would be a fun project.
The development has come along quite nicely, and I figured now that I have a decent sized network put together, now might be a good time to show it off a bit, as well as share a few things I learned about project management while playing in this world.

This isn't to discourage anyone or to belittle railways but I was a fan of using a boat on ice (when that was added) and if done in the nether, you can go really long distances in a short period of time. I have done both in the nether and in the overworld. If done in the overworld, i found it best to do it either in the air or underground.
The railways are definetly nostalgic, though, and do offer some benefits. With minecart/railway mods, it would probably have even more benefits.
    Great video.

I've had a few people shit on this idea because "ice roads in the nether is faster and more efficient"
I want to thank you for recognizing everyone has different tastes and different needs that call for different solutions.
I am quite happy with my rail system. Though while chatting with someone about elytras, I'm beginning to realize having options can give your world a bit more je ne sais quoi.
All of this to say, I think you have a great point about ice roads, and now I'm beginning to consider placing some ice-road viaducts around my world too XP

@@n00b_asaurus Well, as you point out, railways can have many benefits over other methods.
One of the things I liked about your video was when you went up high and was able to look upon your world from that vantage point. Moving vertically is not something iceways can achieve, at least not in vanilla. I know you wanted a more natural feel for the railway but have you considered making the railway go up high to view your creations? I did not see a natural way to achieve this, like by going up a mountain, so a twisted tower may have to be used. I don't know if there is fall damage for minecarts but if there isn't, you could also shoot yourself down on to your lower railway too.
      Anyway, just spewing ideas.
Thanks for the reply and good luck.

@@n00b_asaurus I certainly think when it comes to transportation in your world, diversity will become a massive strength.
Flying around the world in an elytra, or ice boats through the nether, would be an excellent method to transport yourself and a relatively light amount of resources/single entity at extreme speed, in contrast to the rather slow rail network.
However, what the rail does away with speed, it gains in capacity, as you have mentioned.
If you can get minecart chains to play along, you can move an insane amount of resources AND entities all at once, which would eventually surpass the other methods in speed depending on the quantity of things being moved. Future automation would possibly even open up pathways to diverting specific resources to specific places simultaneously. It isn't fast, but that doesn't mean it isn't efficient.
There's no need to have all your eggs in one basket. Travelling the world becomes so much more convenient and satisfying when the mode becomes a choice of what you want, and how effective it is at achieving the current goal.

Wow this is fascinating! I've often had the urge to have a long-lasting world like this, but have never had something like it. My Minecraft play revolves around creating worlds with one purpose (like collecting every armor trim). Once they're done, I tend to abandon the worlds and start a new one. I've grown up watching etho's lets play and it's hard not to want a world like his, but I've come to accept my gameplay. it's okay to not have a long running worlds.
All of that to say this video really makes me want to have a long running world xD. I found your commentary on what this world is/represents super insightful. I especially liked your comment on let's plays and how the very nature of real time recording forces one to think about making the video rather than playing.
I'm not sure where my thoughts are going, but I wanted to say thank you for the very entertaining and thought provoking video! Hope all goes well with your world!
P.S. I loved the binary counter to control your mob farm. might not be the most efficient, but that's not the point. It's creative, interesting and I loved it. Man I really liked how this made me think about life!

You know, I hadn't thought about that. I suppose it's not bad either to just make a world for one purpose and abandon it when you're done :)
I guess then it all depends on what you want as an outcome. As I stated, I really want to make my Plastic Beach in survival. That's going to take quite a long time to achieve, so I needed to adopt strategies that made playing in one world for a long time enjoyable.
If you just plan on playing in a world for a few months, you don't need to consider such things, do you? XP

I'm 14 minutes in right now, and I just had to pause to say
    - this is a breath of fresh air compared to basically every other Minecraft video where it always has to be fast-paced
    - your rail network is inspiring to me, and I want to figure out how to use those junctions
    - your discussions on projects and starting/abandoning worlds reminds me a lot of my past, and what I've done to try to stop myself from continuing that trend
    - this whole video is inspiring both to continue playing, and just to acknowledge that similar feeling of a history as a Minecraft player and how to continue without getting too bored or abandoning more worlds
Gosh, I do wish I had a backup of all the worlds I've abandoned. It would be nice to look at them one last time, or maybe copy some builds into a newer version.

I watched this about a week ago, but I'm coming back to talk about one of the remarks you made. I think it was more in the latter half, but you talked about your playstyle that I am finding to be a genius idea. I've found myself in Minecraft servers and even when video editing feeling the same thing, if I work on it for a while with the project being "complete" looming mysteriously ahead, I'll burn out. So the coding idea of Perpetually Completing a project, even if it not may be actually ready to ship a great method for motivation.
I've applied it to a Beta Minecraft world where I've wanted to build the Monte Palace from Portugal, but never stated. I had gathered materials, but never place anything down. But then hearing this, I built the bridge that is in the palace area. Now is the palace ready to be shown off? No, but now I have this bridge, completely done, that I can say is complete and get that satisfaction from.
Thank you for this idea, I've even applied it to video editing as well where I now start my day just fully finishing a segment of a video. Yes, the video is not done, but that one minute segment is fully complete, and I can look back at it as motivation to keep up the edit.
    Also, cool rails.

As someone currently on the path to treating undiagnosed ADHD, this video talks about the exact problems and solutions I’ve encountered while learning about myself and my condition. I too would strive for big goals and eventually lose all interest in said goal when I no longer enjoyed the preparation. The solution is to break tasks up into very manageable steps and to forgive yourself for becoming distracted. If it’s something you *need* to do, allow yourself small breaks mid-way through the task so that you can return refocused and more motivated.

This is why I loved the older version of MC; I really wish they found a way to make minecarts relevant again. With shulker boxes and the elytra, transportation is so much faster now and so inexpensive in comparison but on the other hand, rail networks are so cool, lol.

    • @n00b_asaurus
      @n00b_asaurus  5 місяців тому +59

It's funny you bring that up! Because after making this video, I got my first set of elytra... and then 2 more to boot.
Combine that with the mob farm and sugar cane farm I had at my base, I was ready to start flying around my world... and yet, I still use the rail network exclusively to get around.
I watch a lot of the channel "not just bikes", and one of the things he points out is that people tend to favor cars because that's the type of transportation being catered too. And his argument is that if other modes of transportation were to be made available, you'd find that more people may prefer other more relaxing modes of getting around.
I think the same effect is happening here. I think people tend to stick with elytras because they haven't given themselves any other options.
Which gives me an idea: I should make a road going around my world as well. That way I have the option to travel by horses, camels, or just walking if I wanted to :)

In regards to your question on "would people be interested in an on-going format of videos like this one?" I say, on my behalf, absolutely. I have ADHD, a disorder where one of the most prime symptoms is that I have such a low attention span that it's almost comical. Many videos that are long-spanned like this I often click, listen in for a while, and leave once I feel as though I've been entertained enough and am now getting bored. On my old private HC world I built a small network, but it ran fuel from my fuel farm to several other farms that needed fuel with an automatic redstone track switcher that would make sure to send the cart BACK to the fuel depot if the minecart was empty or send it to the next farm if it wasn't empty. It would proceed to fill up 3 or so farms before rolling back to the fuel station and going back out. All vanilla.

Also, your juxtaposition of playing Minecraft and real life was quite insightful and when I do a bit of reflection I realize that my own experiences echo exactly what you said; in many ways I've subconsciously used a similar philosophy to approach tough projects and it has worked for me thus far.

It's the most literal interpretation of following your 'train of thought' as you show off your minecraft world, like a story broken up by moments of tension and release, you balance out the long, self reflective story of how you deal with problems with breaks of individual creations, separate from one another, almost to a fault. Like a perfect illustration of the point you are trying to make in your story. Just sublime, fantastic work dude

This is so cool, I love seeing how different people develop their worlds organically. If I encountered the same minecart issues and the problems with a central station, I would probably make a network of stations that each served a set of termini and controlled the junctions. Arriving at a station, selecting a destination, and departing is to me one of the coolest parts of making long trips, but I also want to be able to completely disengage while moving. Different goals, different solutions. One thing I might suggest to go along with your idea of building the rails realistically is adding mile markers.

I very much have the the same problem of setting the goal of, and then exclusively focuing on, large projects. Followed by losing intrest, and stopping playing. And then later once I want to play agian, I come up with a new project, start a new world, abandoning the old world because I did not consider there to be enough in the old world to be worth keeping, compared to the "better" option of starting a new world. Though for me ive been playing Factorio rather than Minecraft, but the same observations apply. Some of the most fun ive had is when I let go of doing anything practical, and just explore the ideas of whatever I feel like building. On that note, try adding things like 270 and 360 degree turns (in other words, loop de loops) to your minecart track, they can be used to add variety (and therefore landmarks) to an otherwise direct path. For example, if you have a path that needs a sharp turn down and to the right, check if going to the left can be made to make sense. Or if you need to go down a steep incline or a cliff, do a zig zag or a spiral path down rather than having a momolithic ramp. Also, would it be possible to add alternative sceneic routes to your minecart network? On a seneic route you would have the option to play with whatever systems you can think of, which would then be designed to be ignorable, without being forgotten.

Still very steep for real trains but it felt reasonable for what's effectively very light narrow-gauge rail. It looked great and felt amazing to walk along, but riding it in BETA was a huge mistake. If a realistic curve causes the camera to shake I may just approximate it using straight and 45° sections.

I normally don’t watch singleplayer survival commentary, but this had me hooked from start to finish. Maybe it’s just the minecart railway. I’m a sucker for minecart rides. But it’s also interesting hearing how people play Minecraft in singleplayer, since I’m mostly a multiplayer guy. How people are able to just… play. Build. No end goal, just a continuous cycle of small goals they set for themselves. Rather than me, who spends his time making something that others will play, maps that do have an ultimate end goal.

However I always never get to total completion, I for myself developed a lot of bad habits such as the idea of planning to which I would enjoy a lot but this would always land me in a new world with new chunks and resetting my progress, but also other implications like issues relating to time (coming back to a world after like 2 weeks and I forgot my main goal in the world), boredom, or pure laziness after hrs of what felt like work when Minecraft is suppose to be like an escape for me 😂😂

I like some of the talking points you have here about playing the same world for a long time.
I have a 4600 ingame day old world that I started around the time the Nether update came out and never saw a reason not to keep a world long term. Back in my xbox 360 days I had a creative world where I transformed a pretty sizeable part of the flat world into a city.
In my survial world I've seen basically everything the game has to offer, I have a central town with an unfinished castle that is basically just a sorting sytem for every non-stackable item except custom banners and the rarer mob heads. Other than that, I also have a few farms, but nothing crazy impressive.
I'm playing it sometimes with friends and we have around seven places that you could consider bases, and I dug two giant tunnels to two of them for a subway.
There also an extensive nether boat-highway network connecting every semi important location.
I like the world and I wish to keep it indefinitely.
I also said to myself that if newer terrain ever is too far away so that I "need" to create a new world I will just move maybe 20.000 blocks away in some arbitrary direction.
This would be a long way from home/spawn but I actually traveled beyond that a few times as the map size is around 16 GB on my SSD.
(Even though I found new terrain 1500 blocks from my base)
When I go on adventures I also carry a book with me, documenting the location and date of certain events. Like how I finished the digging of a tunnel from location X to location Y.
I also regularly leave signs behind with dates and descriptions and when I was really far away, looking for the last pottery sherd I was missing, I thought that I found an entirely new location but it I found that the temple was already plundered of its treasures and a sign saying that I was there 800 in game days ago.
Stuff like this makes me really appreciative of what I have.

The algorithm sent me here. Having the node map in the thumbnail, and noticing the length of the video, had me interested. I enjoy long-form content far more than tightly edited content.
A lot of what you talked about strongly resonated with me. I too have a difficult time buckling down and working on just one thing for a long time while hoping that burn-out doesn’t reach me. And when it does, I’m down for months at a time.
I’m second generation inattentive-type ADHD, and I’m pro-medication when it’s combined with therapy. I was diagnosed at a very young age, and have a two-generation support system of my parents and grandparents got me through American K-12 education with pretty good grades. I never wanted to be top of the class, but I felt the pressure from education authority figures. My brain is really, really good at rote memorization and regurgitation of information, and since American K-12 is all about that, I wasn’t the stereotypical story of someone with ADHD getting really low grades before finally being diagnosed. Unfortunately, this locked me out of a few state programs that help kids with ADHD work on organization and time-management skills. For some reason in my state at the time, you also needed to have an average grade of C or lower on top of an ADHD diagnosis in order to qualify for the program. I had an average of B+ at the time, and graduated compulsory education with a B- average. The grading scale had switched to one with a stricter percentage range starting 11th grade, and the last math class I had to take was a trigonometry course. I didn’t click with the teacher’s instructional methods nor the course material, and got a tutor to help me get my lowest grade in K-12: a C+.
The reason why I bring that up is because I… started to slide. I realized a few years later that I was holding myself to unrealistic standards: the very unhealthy side to perfectionism. I went into college right after high school, and I think I shouldn’t have. I had a grad student instructor that berated me privately and publicly my second semester; for a friggin’ mandatory composition class of all subjects. I reached out; found out that my college, at least for me, does seem to care about its students.
But college has been really difficult for me. My college dropped its associate degrees from all majors the semester I started, so I’m locked into a bachelor’s for a hands-on, programming-heavy technology major. The instructors and professors, although few, and not the most socially adept people, have revitalized my interest in teaching and my passion for helping people who are genuine. Being stuck with online courses for two years and change really slowed down my pace right when I was at my best physical and mental health in over a decade, but I’m getting more involved to stick through with it, as all the friends I made have either graduated and found online jobs, dropped out, or continued into grad school where they’re in classes when I’m going to bed. I’ll be the first person on my dad’s side of the family to get a Bachelor’s degree.
Anyways, I found that my passion, focus, and drive for a narrow, yet broad goal - passing a few classes in a semester - starts to die out and put me in a mental block about 3 months into things… right when the length it takes to finish course work doubles. And I stupidly thought it was a lack of discipline, as I was naively following the advice from some very different life experiences of a close family member who had a buffer of working and a stable romantic relationship while taking night classes to get two associate’s degrees (which were done so long ago that today they do not total in credit hours to a bachelor’s program). With the assistance of my therapist, and my own research from academic papers, I found out that no, it’s not a lack of discipline: it’s how my brain is wired when I’m only going to and from school. Lack of wanting to date and regional businesses having the worrying reputation of pushing college employees into a state of “40-hour work week or else we’ll fire you since this is a right-to-work state where laws have extended to employers having the right to fire employees without the requirement of stating a reason for doing so, as well as part-time positions legally not provided with full-time benefits for working 40+ hour weeks as long as it does not go on past six consecutive weeks” aside, I found that going to a few meetings of two clubs have extended my burnout point from 3 months to three-and-a-half months.
I’m on a life journey right now to find out where the sweet spot is in variety to prevent burnout. It already has tangible effects on my mental and physical health, and I’m still pretty young.

On my last major Minecraft world, I had two major railways that spanned the entire continent.
Minecarts are an underrated way to travel, especially for moving animals across long distances.
I've been working on another once since June 2023 but this one is significantly longer and I haven't laid tracks yet, just the wood markers.
My last major world was created before the Caves and Cliffs part two update when iron was easier to come by and strip mining was the best way to get resources.
Also, the new track goes over mountains and I stuck with the straight line design so it's 1k blocks in one direction River and mountain be darned.
Once I secure a lot of iron I am going to finish this railway and then finish the small tramway I started in March 2023.
After that's done I have another plan to make a railway across the ocean to this other continent which I've settled.
I've mapped out the starting area and the ending area which is across the ocean.
It's the closest possible point to the other continent.
But for now, I just need iron and I love building me some railways.
Railways also help with exploration since you could build one in territories you haven't quite mapped out yet.

    1. Makes Elytra firework boosting damage Elytra, so you're discouraged from using fireworks to fly forever.
    2. Increases the max speed of Minecarts from 4 (i think) m/s in vanilla to 16 m/s.
    3. Makes gold powered rails much, much faster than before. A high end version of powered rails.
    4. Adds copper powered rails. They're essentially the old powered rails, but much cheaper since they use copper.
    5. Adds dispenser and dropper minecarts.

this has genuinely changed my view on survival worlds as well as railroads. never knew there was this much effectiveness in railroads, thought it was becoming obsolete alongside the rest of the communities thoughts. now i know better.

I think being connected to far away rare biomes with "rare" materials like terracotta probably makes it easier for you to get said materials, and therefore could lead to more varied builds, rather than just oak houses in plains biomes, sand stone in dessert bioms acasia in savana bioms etc. I dunno, ive just noticed that my builds are getting kinda same-y since i dont travel my world much

this video was so good and cozy and thought provoking, correlating the software development methods/project management with minecraft is something i've always done mentally while playing and the similarity with real life is so obvious that someone talking about it in this way feels long overdue. kudos! excellent video!

My wife and I play together very casually, so I find a lot of the in-depth tutorials that get into the weeds about data and farming very intimidating. This video was so relaxing, and it gave me the little bit of information I needed: I can build a railway over varied terrain and long distance, and it should be powered for convenience. I tend to wander and find locations I want bases in (I've filled out 6 or 7 full-sized maps so far), and a railway that showcases the vistas I've seen on those journeys is exactly what I want.

I enjoyed this video way more than i thought i would when i read the title. It was so interesting to travel around your world, hearing the story of each stop and why it was where it was. I felt like i was being told a fantastical story and all i had to do is lay back and listen to it. This really was a great video. I've subbed and will share this with my MC friends. I always put an overland rail system in my worlds but i have to place a separate rail track between each destinations, which as you pointed out, gets tiring hopping in and out of each cart to get somewhere. I'm going to check out your design for the junctions.

huh, what an interesting suggestion from youtube.
People have already said that but this video has strong early 2010s minecraft vibes. Kinda brings me back to my teen years.
I like the way you speak, both the topics you bring up and the general way of speaking - clean concise sentences, no annoying mannerisms and filler words. That's a breath of fresh air.
I wasn't expecting to watch the whole thing but I did, and I enjoyed it quite much.

I'm not going to ramble about all the details, mostly because I really don't feel up to it, but I want to say thank you. I suddenly found a new perspective when I wasn't even aware I needed to see one. Your commentary was inspiring and the video itself was quite enjoyable, too. It was a breath of fresh air in youtube's nature of rewarding people who abuse overstimulation and in your face tactics. Thanks for the enjoyable video all around

Docm77 would release a lot of let's play videos kind of in this style. I remember when he responded to a common criticism of his videos ("You never build anymore!") with "Look at all the things I've built!"
He didn't realize that people wanted him to record himself building.
I would love to see you upload videos in this style; a retrospective Let's Play series would be fantastic.
Maybe you could do something similar to what Zisteau used to do and make a camera-man account, give it spectator mode, and have it watch you build things!

I used to be absolutely enamoured by railways in Minecraft back when it was pretty much the only way to get around; Stampy's Lovely World comes to mind whenever I think of this sort of stuff.
This takes me back to the sheer joy of crossing so many blocks in a short time while watching the world scroll by. Makes me wanna build my own again.

I use trapped chests for my rail junctions. Just place them directly on top of the rail you want to switch, then all you gotta do is hold down right-click as you approach to open the chest and switch the track. The chest will stay open until you’re out of range, and won’t cause any suffocation damage as you pass through it.
It works great, is simple, and self-contained.
I think I picked that up from Cubfan a few years ago. I love rail travel. I always have a railroad minecart in my worlds. I played on a friends’ server who had started their world back in alpha, and they had a 5000 square meter railroad that completely encircled their build area. It took about 45 minutes to make the loop, though theirs was elevated so it was a bit safer from mobs.
    Great video. Thanks for sharing.

i recently started playing again and became fascinated by farms. i had never built anything more than a crop farm that i would manually operate, but with bamboo, kelp, cactus farms openly available on youtube. i built an iron farm which took me three days to get right (started building a java iron farm in bedrock). the iron farm opened up my gameplay significantly and i had never been able to create so much. i earlier today built a small kelp farm that will become my fuel alternative while bamboo, hopefully, will become so abundant i can use that as my wood planks alternative
now about ancient cities, these are easier to find than i previously thought. just find a mountain biome, and look for a deep cave. time consuming, yes, but well worth it.
a minecart rail system i have also built, simply to get to an ocean 1000 blocks away to fish, except my rail cart is built at -49 and soon i will create an elevator system to quickly exit and enter the rail system

I really enjoy this retrospective format of content! Much better than other mc videos that practically push an agenda to your face. I thought you had some really interesting talking points relating Minecraft to real life and projects, and the pauses in between added an element of mindfulness that, I felt, connected really well to the whole vibe. Hope you continue to make videos like this, this was a super relaxing watch!

It’s so nice to see just classic rail networks instead of all the 1000s of different ways to get about, makes me a bit nostalgic, and inspired to make my own. It's so refreshing seeing these builds that aren't necessarily built for looks but you're clearly having a lot of fun with them. I often struggle with making things too perfect and losing interest when I make something I don't like, so seeing a world like this where it's just about having a good time is a great thing for me
