- The office was filmed using a set of rules to guide all of the chaos. Whether it was episodes like fire drill or moments like parkour, the office was a once in a generation show that still speaks to audiences in 2018. What separated the show lived on long after the original series ended its 12 episode run. These rules of the office are what gave it that long life.

There's so many details the show adds with its mockumentary style. Like how Bob Vance is fully aware of the cameras so he always introduces himself, even to people that already know him as "Bob Vance: Vance Refrigeration" because he's trying to get free advertising.

One of my favorite cameramen gags is when the police come and Creed starts to get worried. He goes to the “talking” room and tells the cameraman: “Just pretend we’re talking until they go away.”

this vid reminded me of when pam suspected dwight and angela were dating and she told the cameraman to let her know if he saw anything that pointed to them having a relationship. and then the camera panned over to angela eating the candy bar dwight got from the vending machine earlier. i love how the cameraman showed pam while not actually saying anything. truly genius.

Some things I've noticed are
-the mic sometimes appears
-most characters look at the director's but jim is the one to mostly look at the camera talking to US
-audio for characters vary due to their mics
I love how Michael in early seasons everytime he has an awkward or cringe moment he slightly look at the camera and smile like he was searching some approval

Char lie Something I read from the comment sections from one of Nerdstagic’s other Office vids is that most likely Micheal is super lonely which is why he acts the way he does for validation. What you brought up is another great example. He’s just trying to get praised and seen
Also in the one on one interviews, all characters have the office in the background except for Jim, who has the window behind him instead. This was to signify he had something bigger to do, and when Pam and Jim got together, she began sitting on that side too

One of the greatest shows of all time. I've cried, laughed and had so many other emotions that no other TV show has ever been able to pull out of me. To this day some of the funniest episodes make me run to my inhaler (which I rarely ever use) because I'm laughing so hard.
I should never have watched past Micheal leaving. Sabre was bad enough but man, it ruined the show for me last week. I mean fuque

I know this sounds weird but it kind of feels comforting. And then when the show ends it feels like you loose your best friend.

@ 3:40 Oh so it wasn't just me having a hard time getting thru the first season even tho my GF and her sister never shut about how good the show as a whole is.
People recommend me this all the time. I was wondering why I'm struggling to get into the show, that first season could be the problem.

KatrinaRolina it gets much better after season one. I felt the same while watching season one but I decided to keep watching it and I ended up loving it and now it’s one of my favorites

Yes! I know some people are going to hate me this, but when I first started watching the office (a few years ago), I started at season 6. Now I realize it was a huge mistake, but I watched until season 9. Then I went back to season 1 and watched until season 9. This took some time, so by the time I got to season 6 I forgot some of what happened. The fact I knew it got better got me through the boring first and second season.
what made the office so great is that it *felt* real, like a real documentary. Lots of mockumentaries just throw the documentary thing out the window and use it as an excuse and a framing style, rather than as an actual attempt to make you believe it was a documentary. It was genuinely hard for me to tell if the office was actual real people doing real things, or if they were all actors. And that's what made it so amazing. Even if there was "problems" or things that weren't exactly entertaining, or just weird additions; they were all very genuine in feeling. And the way the film crew interacts with the actors, how the cameras move, where they're placed, etc. all added to that feeling.

The Office changed the very way we think and behave. I have definitely done eye-shots to a non-existant camera, thought about the camera zooming in on my face to catch an expression showing that I didn't mean what I just said. I do this without really thinking about it; it just comes naturally. Granted, I also think about things like, what fan debates would look like if my life were a show, who they'd ship, etc. But I can't be the only person who does that.

3:40 this is why it was really hard for me to start watching the show and getting through the first season..... but after the first season I fell in love!
ikr, when I was watching the 1st season I was telling my friend "hey, so I'm watching this series, it's a must-watch but is soo boring"
now I'm telling her "IT IS a must! you gotta watch it with me 😍"
I'll be real, the first season makes me appreciate how everyone "grew" over the seasons even more 💟
for me it was the opposite i liked the first season more than season two because for me it was more realistic and Michael's character on the first season are realistic in a way that he was a jerk instead of an idiot so that's why it took me so long to continue watching season two and above.
I’m a Brit who was very much “coming of age” when the original Office aired (I was 18 at the shows close in 2003). As such I’m a huge fan of the original version and absolutely and unashamedly believe it to be a genius. As such I didn’t watch the US version for years and when I watched the first series of it I HATED it, just felt it was a bad copy of something that was so good. But, as much as it pains me to say now, after persisting with it a couple of years ago I love it now. It’s a completely different beast to its British parent, but that’s okay; I’ve come to appreciate it as something different and equally great. And this version is more optimistic and feel-good and even as a miserable Londoner, I can appreciate that and see that that has its place.

YES! You don’t need to like one more than the other! You just need to see both and understand that they had different goals from the same concept
I'm a Londoner, loved the UK Office.....but, if I have to be honest, I've loved the US Office even more, and watched it more. The US characters feel like my friends, can't honestly say the same about the UK characters, though it really was genius and funny.

I remember from my comic spirit class that the relationship between Jim and Dwight plays off of the classic "Clever Servant" "Foolish Servant" trope dating all the way back to Plutarch.

I think the reason the British one was so perfect is that it was so realistic in every way. Watch any fly on the wall documentary from that time (Airport, for example) and The Office captures the same feeling and aura perfectly. The American version felt like a comedy series, The Office felt real. Too real, at times. It is a masterpiece and it wrote the rulebook.
My opinion one the best comedies ever. I was explaining to my girlfriend how genius this show was and this video explained it perfectly
It’s amazing that the Scranton branch was the top selling branch considering all the down time of employees doing interviews with the camera staff 🤔
I kind of assumed they weren't, and the numbers were being fudged BECAUSE of the documentary. They were making most of the money from the doc, and writing it off as their "selling" to keep the doc interesting (and thus viewership).
I introduced my now bf to the Office and when we finally got to the end he cried so I think he's a keeper

Yeah, it's the guy from the show "Lookalikes" which was kind of another british mockumentary based on a talent agency. That guy was the best part. The "Dueling David Brents" was an amazing scene. It's on Netflix. Their Gordon Ramsay impersonator was very timid and knew nothing about cooking, good stuff.

I kind of love those moments they say peek through the blinds because it’s so different than usual but it’s what we want to see
Now that I think about it, The Office and similar shows made me a more mature and aware viewer and listener (with tv and real life). I’m looking more at how others react when I know their underlying feelings and just it further underscores how much powerful story telling happens with the face in very subtle ways.
The camera man was so good when I first watched the office I was like am I actually watching a real documentary

Fantastic video, I am British and watched our Office when it came out, it just made me feel sad. I've just started watching (marathoning) The US Office over ten years after it finished and I'm sad I didn't watch it sooner, it's a triumph, utterly incredible writing, I love it and all the characters. xx

Trailer park boys was the first mockumentary tv series
Trailerpark Boys and Reno 911 were the big ones using this format.
The Office (UK) and TPB were broadcast the same year but the format had already been used on British TV (at least in part) in the 90's with shows like The Day Today and Brass Eye. Then later in Marion & Geoff the year before TPB and The Office.
