I’m happy to see that most of the top comments are here to defend “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas” form Community. Christmas is baked into the blood of that special, it’s very character-driven, and it’s one of the best holiday episodes of any show I’ve ever seen.
“Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas” is the opposite of boring. It’s a perfect Holiday episode that connects with the rest of the show and is super character driven. You really should have used a different clip than the one from that Community episode to make that point.
Just do what I did and assume the boring part was talking about the others, and that the community part was about the change in media from live action to claymation
I i have watched this episode so many times that i lost count. and yet i never realized this "sub plot" about each character's fears. excellent video! congratulations.
It was a monster hit for 10+ years, and it won all the Emmy’s. It just probably hasn’t been gone line enough to miss it. (I never saw Modern Family until after it had already gone of the air.)
Either you're young, or just don't pay attention because Modern Family used to be THE sitcom for a long time as well as having influenced a plethora of modern shows/sitcoms and is constantly referenced in media. It's just a bit out of its prime at this point so it's not a huge talking point anymore.

You know you messed up when over half the comments are attacking you for insulting an episode of TV that's not even from Modern Family. Community is a masterpiece.
The one episode that for some reason just makes me laugh so hard, is the episode where Mitch and Cam have this friend just getting out of a bad breakup (played by Mathew Broderick) and he just gets off the phone with them about “playing the field” again, and after the phone call of course he runs into Phil while shopping, he doesn’t know who he is in relations to the family, so he starts talking to him and there’s this whole double entendre going on where he thinks Phil is inviting him over for like a hook up or date, but really Phil just wants to have a “guys night” and everyone else cancelled on him… just the way Phil talks and the way Mathew Broderick thinks that he’s on a date makes that whole episode extremely hilarious to me. I think those are always the best episodes, when someone is confused and thinks something completely different is going on than what is presented as reality.
Loved seeing the Superstore clips in there. Would love to see some of your analysis on the show that showcases a true blue collar workplace and characters who are actively dealing with the challenges of the minimum wage workforce.

I’m sorry but did they just use Community as an example of a show that doesn’t use the holiday episodes to further character growth? It’s literally one of the only shows I’ve watched that actually looks deeper into the characters on the holiday episodes.
Exactly, I saw it as a very empathetic way to explain Abeds everyday struggles both to the audience and to his friends. It could be hard to follow at times because it gets really abstract at some points, but it was a very original and meaningful holiday episode nonetheless.
Each Halloween episode helped different characters to grow out of an insecurity of theirs, and strengthened their overall bonds (ironic, considering it's a 'horror' holiday). Such a great show. Has so much to offer and is so hilarious that it is one of my go to shows. But if I had to pick one episode (which is very difficult!) it would be "Connection Lost", the episode that takes place entirely on the computer screen. That episode is enough to make someone interested in watching the show. Hilarious with jokes firing on all cylinders and emotional/dramatic as well.
A lot of the really fantastic writing of the first few seasons of Modern Family really highlights how bad some of the writing was as the show went on too long. The show seems to forget or outright crap several great character moments in earlier seasons. There’s a beautiful moment at the end of this episode where Jay talks about falling in love with Gloria just listening to the sound of her voice. Then at the end of season four, that gets crapped on when Jay says that Gloria intercepted a drink that Jay had sent to her sister. Lots of the earlier season episodes were based around growth, while later seasons had lots of filler and the episodes were about characters telling unnecessary lies and spending the episodes trying to cover those lies. This really highlighted when Modern Family is compared to shows that ran at the same time like Parks and Recreation and Schitt’s Creek. Those episodes had few seasons and built on character moments instead of ignoring them or crapping on them.
The Pressure episode where Alex cracks and eats the cake with her hands. They could have focused on mental health for everyone but young people in this case. I really wish they kept her seeing that therapist/shrink.

“MF giving halloween the same reverence other shows give to Christmas or thanksgiving” Brooklyn 99: cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool…
How about The Simpsons? Ironically, episode 1 of season 1 was a Christmas episode but it is really Treehouse of Horror that has become the holiday focus of the show. For many viewers it is the only episode they will watch all season.
I love several season 3 episodes such as ”Lifetime Supply” and ”Election day”, I suppose I can see though from an objective pov why this episode is more rewarding and symmetrical in its structure
I think the episode where the family is all virtually calling each other and they think Haley got married is also top tier….I don’t remember which episode
Hey, I like how your channel dissects shows, episodes, movies and methods around all forms are cinema, animation and other forms or expressions and messages. Ever think of doing an episode on Amon from Legend of Korra?
I waited till I get to this episode then watched this and it really sums why it's a great episode. I just started watching Modern Family last week and I'm loving it.
Nah, I love how the first 5 top comments here was about your untimely placement (?) of Community's (really good and heartwarming) Christmas episode lmao
There was one opening that is really funny. It was a chaotic morning, Mich and Cam visited the Dunphy family and all was yelling a like crazy over a lot of things.
I still gotta say tho: no sitcom ever did a Halloween-special quite as perfectly as Roseanne (back before the obvious more recent controversies, of course). Most of those specials not only stayed in the reality of the show (most of the time) and developed on their characters, but they also brilliantly highlighted the fact of “of course this is the Conners’ favorite holiday!” It was like the holiday was almost specifically made for them. From the incredibly sick and gory pranks (like Dan getting murdered or getting his hand caught in the garbage disposal), to the absolutely surreal plots (like Jerry Garcia’s ghost visiting Roseanne in the maternity room), that show hands-down changed the game of what “family-geared” Halloween specials could be.
The absolute funniest part of the episode that is always overlooked is when the first set of trick or treaters comes through the house and they are disappointed....Which leads to the totally, out of nowhere, nut shot occurs. One of the kids hits Phil in the balls as he is leaving the house. It is so unexpected and they don't even show it on screen, but Phil's reaction and his cry of "WWWHHHYYYY" is simply the best.

Calling Abed’s uncontrollable Christmas boring is blasphemy.
“MF giving halloween the same reverence other shows give to Christmas or thanksgiving”
Brooklyn 99: cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool…
How about The Simpsons? Ironically, episode 1 of season 1 was a Christmas episode but it is really Treehouse of Horror that has become the holiday focus of the show. For many viewers it is the only episode they will watch all season.
The anniversary episodes were some of my favorites 😂 Man im’a go rewatch this show
i like how most of the top comments are about communities' Christmas episode with abed lmao. I think you might need to apologize to that fanbase hahah
Good video, however I expect the next one to begin with an apology for that comment about Abed’s Christmas special.
I think Connection Lost is the best Modern Family episode.
Baby looney tunes on sitcoms
Baby bugs-f.r.i.e.n.d.s
Baby Lola-modern family
Baby daffy-park and recreation
Baby taz-superstore
Baby Sylvester-Brooklyn 99
Baby tweety-the office
My favourite one was where haily goes for college and Phill present his Phil's osphy book ..those quotes in the book are funniest
I love several season 3 episodes such as ”Lifetime Supply” and ”Election day”, I suppose I can see though from an objective pov why this episode is more rewarding and symmetrical in its structure
I know Previously Unaired Christmas is a mess, but that's just part of its charm.
I loved hearing you talk about Glee! any plans to make more videos talking about it?
I think the episode where the family is all virtually calling each other and they think Haley got married is also top tier….I don’t remember which episode
Hey, I like how your channel dissects shows, episodes, movies and methods around all forms are cinema, animation and other forms or expressions and messages. Ever think of doing an episode on Amon from Legend of Korra?
I waited till I get to this episode then watched this and it really sums why it's a great episode. I just started watching Modern Family last week and I'm loving it.
this episode made me tear up of laughing. When Mitchell saw himself as Spiderman
