    Sunset was played as my ex Royal Marine Commando Father in Laws coffin disappeared through the curtains at the crematorium. The place was silent as the melody played then the slight pause and as the bugles started the was a large intake of breath from the whole congregation and EVERYONE later commented that was the most memorable piece of music they had heard at a funeral!!

      Glad someone voiced my feelings. All very impressive, and the band as always were impeccable, but the traditional arrangement built up anticipation. Everyone knew what was coming and when.
      That's what caused the goose pimples.
      BTW, have sunsets occurred more quickly in recent years? Is this climate change? Why is the bugle call being sped up? Again, this reduces the solemnity of the moment. What's next, a thrash metal arrangement of The Last Post?
      Glad the bugler at my dad's funeral played it at the right tempo. Mind you, he'd played at Thatcher's funeral the day before. 🤔

    Brought a tear to my eyes. I must say it is nice that the US Marines officers were filmed honouring HM Royal Marines.
    (it brings back memories of playing the 'Retreat' at the flag lowering ceremonies during the 1967 Canadian Centennial. Coincidently, HMS Britannia was docked about 20m away.)

    The Sunset is called „Der Zapfenstreich“ in German. At my ex-husbands post it was always played when the flag was put down at the end of the day. I cant remember how many times I heard this tune when being on post picking him up after duty. My ex-husband served in the American Army with the helicopter squad stationed in Wiesbaden. The helicopters are still stationed there.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 2 роки тому +2

      Every RM drummer is a qualified bugler. And in the RM bands every musician plays at least two instruments.
      so please check the video again it clearly shows drummers holding sticks in the left hand and bugles in the right.

    • @daz6637
      @daz6637 2 роки тому

      @@1chish As a person who’s played in the pipes and drums as a drummer, my point is: Not all drummers can play the bugle that well if at all, it is a niche instrument that many never perfect; sometimes less experienced members are used to bolster numbers as to provide that military spectacle. If they were all playing they must have the lungs of Peruvian mountain folk as they are not breathing much, maybe it was my 20 Embassy a day that made me blow harder?

      @@daz6637 Embassy? Pffttt ... When I were a lad it were Craven A....
      Well whether you accept my point or not the fact remains 'drummers' are actually buglers first and drummers second. They are also trained on the Herald Fanfare Trumpet.

    • @briangoulden6687

      @@daz6637 But these are not ordinary drummers, they are Royal Marines - they don't become drummers if they cannot play the bugle equally well. I will reiterate - they are ROYAL MARINES - not only the cream of military musicians globally but also trained and deployed on operations in medical and communications specialisms; they are lads and lassies of skills, resilience and courage.
