  • I spend a week with the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N with the manual transmission to see what it's like to live with. Overall, I still love the Elantra N and think it's easily the best value in the performance compact sedan segment, but I did have a few minor complaints with the car during my week. None of them are even remotely close to being dealbreakers, but they're worth knowing about if you're considering purchasing one of these. What do you think about the Elantra N? Thanks to Hyundai for providing this vehicle!

      @@NaijaBull for how hard I drive it, very! First thing is the blue paint, it’s pretty weak. First thing you should do is get a real ceramic coat or a clear wrap or even just a clear bra for the front. I have an insane amount of rock chips on the front bumper, one is even about the size of a quarter. I will say that I do live in upstate NY, which is known for having very harsh winters and very shitty roads, but I still recommend getting some paint protection.
      The second thing is also cosmetic, but I have a great Hyundai dealer who always takes care of it, the 10 spoke wheels have a serious clear coat issue. I’m on my third set, and I even have a set of sparcos that I’m on for half the year for snow duty. The clear coat just kinda flakes off of them, but again the dealer always just replaces them all no questions asked so honestly no big deal. One thing to note is that I use a touchless car wash at least once a week, which does use chemicals to try and remove dirt. That might be having an effect on the wheels but still no excuse.
      Third, bad coil pack. Now I’m not actually super mad at this one, but I drove my Veloster on 3 cylinders for a day (I still had to go to work lol) but after work I just pressed the B blue link button in my car and they instantly got me an appointment immediately at my dealer for a repair, which they also did immediately. Coil packs do go bad, just one of mine died at ~30k miles.
      I guess the last thing is that when it was new, it had trouble starting sometimes. Between 1000-10000 miles it would struggle to start. It did go away though.
      Final thoughts would be that I put this car through a lot. It’s my daily driver, with an average of 70 miles a day and I do beat on it quite a bit - when it’s up to temp of course. It has been an extremely fun car for the past two years and honestly I’m probably going to keep it forever. I’m probably going to get a Santa Fe Hybrid as a better daily driver and rode trip car and let my blue baby Kimchi chill out. If you have any other questions, please ask!

    Have seen one going the opposite way (when I was in my Bullitt) and honestly, it looked better in real life than it does in pictures and videos. Although Hyundai and Kia designs might not be for everyone, gotta give em the fact that they're at least doing something unique (like the Santa Cruz, Ioniq 5, EV6) and not a run of the mill. Plenty of power and what the Civic Si could've been...

Let's not fool ourselves into thinking this will be better (faster) on track, or as well sorted suspension wise than the new Type R or even the FK8. Candid review. I wish there was a way you could rent any new car for a week before buying. One quick test drive will never really tell you the whole story of if a vehicle is truly right for you. I mean you could really enjoy a car on a test drive but then come to find out a few days later that it’s too stiff to daily or not the best on gas or maybe you prefer dct instead of a manual, vice versa. So yeah it’s pretty nice you get the opportunity to have these new cars for a week Matt.

    Another great review, Matt, thanks. I drove an Elantra N 6MT last week and almost bought it. It's the only MT currently in the state of Arizona. A few thoughts: a) you can't get one in AZ for any less than $4K over MSRP + another $1,300 in required dealer add-ons. $33K quickly becomes $39K. b) no sunroof on the MT (unless you're in Canada). Why don't they think people who drive MTs like sunroofs? c) the plastic piece that runs from the dash down to the seat belt area, to the right of the shifter, is very tacky. As one review said: straight out of Walmart. It bugged me more than it should have. d) Most importantly for me, the seat thigh bolsters are just too high and tight. I'm not a wide guy by any means but those seats just aren't comfortable, particularly on longer trips. And yet I still almost bought it because it is just so great to drive, and so customizable! By the way, I'm 6'5" and had plenty of both headroom and leg room. Very spacious inside. If the seats were just a bit more comfortable, and I could have negotiated down the dealer markup a bit, I'm sure I would have bought it. Looking forward to driving the Integra for comparison, knowing of course it won't have near the power that this little beast does.

    I'd be interested to seeing what Hyundai will do for the Elantra N's mid-cycle refresh in 3 years.
    If there is room for the 2.5T engine from the Sonata N-Line, Stinger GT-Line, and Genesis G70 to where they can put that under the hood of the Elantra N with a bigger turbo to like 320hp (since 300 is the magic number these days for turbo i4 engine performance cars), revised the manual gearbox with short shift kit, shorter gear ratios that's like Porsche 911 GT3 Touring (The Straight Pipes just reviewed) and Civic Si and Civic Type R shifting ratios, give us those same bucket seats in leather with cooled functionality, and upgrade the driving dynamics more to the next level, they will dominate the segment and would surpass the incoming 6th gen Civic Type R on all levels and get the respect they deserve even more.

    Would you say the ride in the EN when not in N/Sport mode or rather it's softest damper setting was softer than the new Civic Si? How does it compare to the last gen Civic Si with dampers?

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  2 роки тому +1

      It’s hard to say without driving them back to back on the same roads, but from my experiences I’d say the softest setting on EN is pretty close to the ride of the current Si. Previous gen Si was probably slightly softer in its normal damper setting. Type R is the most comfortable of all of them in its softest mode, and is stiffer in R mode than all others in their stiffest modes.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  2 роки тому +3

      When the product planner was asked at the launch event, they said that their research suggested that manual buyers wouldn't mind not having it and would appreciate the slightly lower center of gravity more. They said there's nothing stopping them from offering the manual with the sunroof, so me and a couple journalists suggested they add it as an option down the road. I think they'll be monitoring dealer feedback as well, so if you want a manual with the sunroof and don't want to compromise, tell your dealer that and hopefully they'll pass it on to corporate.

Curious to hear your thoughts because I have a 2018 WRX and, though I love the hell out of it, but I miss having a performance hatch and out of all the ones out there the Veloster N is the one that catches my eye.
    So I guess my question is performance wise, which one do you think is better? I know the Elantra is a scale above, but the Veloster is also lighter on its feet.

But then I ran into all the videos and reviews of the EN and there was basically no way I could go with the K5. Sure, the K5 has a lot more "luxury" type features as well as a sunroof. But it doesn't really add too much more. I hardly used the cooled seats of my Optima and I don't really need a bird's eye camera cuz I know how to park. The fact that the EN came with a manual option was pretty much the end of the discussion. Manuals are dying on the vine and being able to get one that is THIS fun to drive is worth forgoing some of the features of the K5. I've had my EN for about a month. I am happy with my choice. I have an Elantra N Line (the actual car to be compared to the Civic SI, not this) and noticed the climate control thing you mentioned. I think the intended purpose is to provide a “wind in your face” type of experience. I don’t personally care for it, but if I have my windows down and sunroof open I don’t mind it too much.

    • @brandonvo9727

      So the climate control blasting heat seems to be linked to engine temperature. I’ve noticed that once the car is up to normal operating temp it will push excess heat into the cabin if the ac is off even if you have the windows up. And ofc the more you push the car, the more heat gets pushed into the cabin. Also I think if you turn the ac to recycle inside air it won’t push heat into the cabin

      The Elantra N is compared to the Civic Si because it's the same size as the Civic Si, they're competitively priced whereas the higher performance cars of the departed WRX STI, the new 5th gen WRX, outgoing gen FK8 Type R, the MK8 Golf R have a higher price tag than the Elantra N, and the 11th gen Civic Si, MK7.5 Jetta GLI, and incoming reborn Integra all fall right in line price wise while the Elantra N gives you everything and then some.
      That's why they call cars like these tweener cars (in-between cars). They're competitively matched in size and price, but they may have more to offer that their competitors highest performance vehicles has without the highest performance price tag.

    • @DrZoomer

      @@antoinelee-thomas9536 All I’m saying is the performance and price lines up more between the N Line and the Si. $26,500 and $28,000 is certainly closer than $28,000 and $33,000. To me it makes more sense to compare the N and the Type R that’s coming (I understand we can’t do that yet) because they match up in terms of the product stack (top performance Elantra and top performance Civic) and pricing better.

    "It does a good job of putting down power" - And has a wheel hop at the same time? Those are mutually contradictory.

      The 6Mt is tricky with launch control. You don't have that prob with the DCT model. But other than that it puts the power down well especially around corners.

    Great review Matt! As always, honest and unbiased. Take aways from your review from someone who isn’t in the market for for this segment (and probably never will be);
    Pros:
    Hyundai was very smart in creating an identifiable color scheme for their N series. While I was underwhelmed the first time I saw this color, its now engrained with the brand
    Fun factor. The software adjustability (a tip o’ the hat to Dodge imo), racing style seats, adjustable suspension, manual option, overall performance etc
    Affordable performance in a practicable application
    A manual!
    Cons:
    Hyundai quality. It’s a thing. Switchgear for example, improves every model, but as others have noted, it looks nice, feels cheap.
    I’m curious who the target market is for this model. Younger, performance leaning drivers who are making decent money, I would think would move more towards either German sedans, or American muscle cars. For young starter families, the Kona N would probably be an easier sell?

    • @Talerigm
      @Talerigm 2 роки тому +2

      If you have a kid, Elantra is way better than Kona. Second row in Kona is veeery tight, good luck fitting car seat there. Also, for this price point - there are no comparable new German sedans. American muscle will not have that practicality or handling.
      I definitely see young family, interested in a car like that

    I was pondering the EN as a road trip car with my wife that would be more fun for me but also acceptable to her. This review made me think the Mazda 3 turbo might be a good way to go. A little luxury, sport(ish) and well priced.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  2 роки тому +4

      I think the Mazda3 Turbo is very underrated. Way more torque and luxury than this, plus AWD for basically the same money. Obviously the handling is far less sporty but it still handles great.

      My EN is very good on the road. I find it very comfortable and I do not get fatigued at all. The steering is so good and it tracks so well it really does make road trips fun IMO. Turn the exhaust off and I think its pretty quiet also.

    WRX (stripper) - $33,100
    WRX (sport) - $37,600
    Elantra N - $39,700
    You might get a few cool things on the Hyundai but the AWD WRX is the king in the snow.
