    I have actually owned both. The N is just by far a more "Fun" car. The tech is better. The speed is quicker. And obviously, it sounds better. A punk kid smashed it and I couldn't afford to replace it with another N, so I got the WRX. For the money I paid, I got a deal (2K under MSRP). It's a good car. Reliable and it actually corners better than the N, but it just doesn't have the same spirit. I'm sure I'll be happy with it over the life of the car, but I won't forget the fun I had with the Elantra N.

    The critics of the old WRX said it was not grown up, too rough, interior was cheap, and geared to more of younger generation. The GT has check all the boxes of the previous past complaints. Now the GT WRX is not as fun because its not a manual. The interior now is great looking, the infotainment is solid, the options of all the driving is great, and the looks are not as flamboyant, but the car is solid. Elantra is good but at the end of the day, its FWD. There are companies like COBB that are all over these new WRX's and can really push the engine on this WRX. To each their own. I did the new WRX. I have a 2011 WRX LTD and will stick with it.

    8:08 - There is a reason many cars, including the Elantra N, don't do that: noise limits. The EN in sport and N mode likely fails a number of states' exhaust noise laws, and in California at least, the testing is supposed to be done in the loudest mode that the car can be in at startup. By putting you back into normal mode, it ensures that the exhaust is not loud enough to fail the noise test.

    For MT enthusiasts: I had a 2013 Genesis Coupe and someone at Hyundai thought it was a good idea to combine the clutch slave cylinder & throw-out bearing into a single part. The first one started leaking brake fluid at 45k miles which was bad, but the second one they put in under warranty only lasted 19k miles and failed completely with no warning while I was on a road trip in Oct 2022. It took Hyundai almost 6 months to fix everything (still just under the 10-year warranty thankfully). As soon as I got it back, I traded it in on a 2023 WRX manual, which uses the time-tested separate clutch parts setup. Time will tell, but I love it so far. If Hyundai is using the same part on the Elantra N manuals, I wouldn't buy one.

With that money, I’ve got Ohlins, 4-pot Brembos, 19lb wheels and PS4S tires on the way, and I already have the car on a conservative e30 tune making 330whp/360ft-lbs.

    As soon as they make the GT available in manual, I’ll be interested. Based on their sales numbers of auto versus manual for the last Gen alone, there’s no way that car should’ve released in CVT only. I’m glad it’s not a trash option and that people preferring a non-manual have a decent offering. I just think it should have a manual as well.

The WRX is an aging rally legend, a quirky and fun rally car that has grown up, gone to university, and wants to settle down, but is still able to have fun along the way. I have not pulled the trigger on a WRX yet, but I eventually plan to. The N is not a good daily. Plus, the clutch and transmission where just too light and not very good IMO. If I got an N again, I would get the DCT. If you turn down the exhaust noise, I actually found the N to be boring. While I've not driven the N I do own a manual VB and let me say that you have a lot of fun. You don't get the fancy modes etc, but that's because manual it's always in sport and you just choose normal sport or track sport which just defeats the traction control (which does make a noticable difference still). You don't get the pops sure, but it's also a tuner car still and drop a new intake, exhaust, and tune and suddenly it's fighting in a different class entirely. And winning.
    The wrx stock loses to the next level up, but not by much. Then minor upgrades and you are pushing 340hp.

    Wow... the same is true for CVT's apparently! The best CVT's are the ones that are bad about being CVT's; That DON'T put the engine in the ideal ratio all the time, they fake having gears! Let's be real about why there is CVT in the WRX. Subaru doesn't have the budget to develop a new torque converter auto. They've gone CVT in every other slushbox subie for the past 10 years. Unless they wanted to release the WRX as manual only, they had to take their CVT and make it shift like a DCT or traditional automatic with gears. It's not because CVT's are any better than a traditional auto or a DCT for the application, its simply that Subaru has to work with what they've got. Good job, whoever writes the software that controls the CVT.

    Another great review as always! Im a huge fan of N performance and also Subaru. I had a 19 Veloster N for 2 years which was fantastic but traded for an M2 comp. But today im in a 22 WRX Limited and its absolutely fantastic and probably my favorite car i’ve owned. But i absolutely in love with the rally vide of this gen with the cladding, and its light video game/rally steering while paired with the handling of the chassis and AWD system. I feel like im in a rally car. Perfect comment about in person looks cause i did not get the styling at all in pics and videos. But fell in love in person. Would like the Recaros but there is no way i can have a drivers car without a manual. I got a Limited to get the better seats over the premium and they feel and look better than premium model. Interesting comparison. Subaru whiffed on the steering feel and the GT has gotten pretty darn expensive. Adding insult, they've abandoned the easy-to-use rotary knobs for the HVAC that I have in both my Forester XT and BRZ. I have to agree with Todd. As much as I'm totally enthralled with the N's performance, I just cannot warm up to the looks. I see there is a refresh coming, but IMO it only made the front end better, while making the rear end much worse. And it still carries the "mark of Zorro" on the doors. Too much going on on the exterior. Good review, as usual. Hope Paul mends up soon.

    • @derringera
      @derringera Рік тому

      Kind of where I'm at. I don't mind the mark of Zorro but I like that comparison haha. The design on the side skirts and, to your point, the rear are a rough look though. The red lining is tacky and the paneling in the back makes its butt look turned up and floaty rather than strong and grounded. Wonder what some small tasteful mods would do.

    Great reviews as always, guys, and I hope Paul feels better! And you will not find another car review channel with a review who references a trebuchet!! 🙂
    I wanted a WRX for years. Test drove a few, but never did buy one. I'm now 53 and the WRX just seems too much like a kid's car to me. That's not really the case, but I think that boat has sailed. And for the sticker prices on new WRXs, there are much nicer cars you can buy, even some with AWD. (Not all-time AWD like a Subie, but you still have AWD if needed.)
    But what really kills the WRX for me is the fuel economy. I drive 15-20k miles per year, and I can't stomach a car that averages mid-20s mpg. Also, Subaru seems proud of that pattern in the plastic cladding, saying it improves fuel economy, but is the trade-off in ugliness really worth the extra 0.25 mpg you might gain?
    I agree with Paul, the car does look better in person. But it's still worse looking than the last generation.
    Having said all that, if Subaru made this in a 4-door hatch version again, I'd probably buy one. Their stubborn refusal to bring back the hatch is crazy. They would sell, and maybe even outsell the sedan version.
    I like the looks of the Elantra N, as well as a couple other cars from Hyundai. But I think it goes back to my feeling that I'm just too old for the boy racer machine now. It seems like it would be tough to be a daily driver for me. So I guess I'll just have to admire the N on the rare occasions I see one.
