The Green Job fish (Uku) Spearfishing - Fish in Focus

  • Опубліковано 18 чер 2024
  • The green job fish, aka, Uku & kakaap is a predatory demersal species that behaves much like a pelagic fish. The world record is 17kg but anything over 10kg is considered a trophy sized fish. They are renowned worldwide as a difficult fish to spear, especially when larger. In this video I show various situations that I have found green job fish in. Anything from using burley, aspetto & the silent dive bomb.

      Tell that to the jobfish in the Philippines. Most of them seem to have been in the Med taking lessons from dentex...;-(. But then again, the groupers and snappers here are equally smart. Just comes with fishing pressure. But hey, at least the jacks will never learn:-)

    • @spearfishinglifegreece

      @@AntiVaganza Ιt always has to do with each individual fish and what experiences with divers it had in the past.There are certainly times where you meet just really really curious dentex here in the Med too coming to eat you!!!

    • @AntiVaganza
      @AntiVaganza 3 роки тому

      @@spearfishinglifegreece That's a good point. Actually, I normally find the groupers here to be exceptionally shy but then the other day I had two come up to me when I grunted - classic grouper pose, looking straight at me whilst waving their pectoral fins. I didn't even see the first one until really late because it's so rare they will come out for grunts here. Not sure if the spot I was on has less pressure or whether the new moon made them more curious.
      As for the suicidal dentex - if Daniel goes much longer without one, you have to hand capture one of those and release it around him next time he visits;)

    Daniel, like a lot of the other comments, I live in Hawai'i. But I have a spot where the ukus are coming in at around 25-45ft regularly and I have a video on my channel of my first shot at one, it ripped unfortunately. One of the more recent dives at this spot I did in November was unbelievable, I never came out with an uku but I had the experience to see lots of them passing by through this sand patch. Almost 10 or so just cruising by was amazing to see, maybe when I get better and they get bigger we can meet again lol

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  3 роки тому +1

      They can be difficult to land especially when larger. A gun with a bit of power helps with the longer shots on thicker fish.

    • @AntiVaganza
      @AntiVaganza 3 роки тому

      Don't mean to be a douche, but perhaps it's time to practice a bit more restraint or do a pool session to see if your gun is actually hitting where you are aiming...?
      I've only ever seen four, shot and landed two and missed on one completely and the last one never got in range. But one thing I do know is that they are indeed powerful - even the smaller ones - so like DMann points out, you need a good holding shot.
      The second one I shot I actually thought I had lost it. I shot him fairly deep and the shot looked good, just near the gill plate but he sped off super fast. I put a bit of pressure on him on my ascent but the line went slack quite fast and by the time I got to the surface I was bummed out and told my friend, I'd lost it. But he was there, hanging on the line - I had hit him just rear of the gills, maybe nicked his heart so after the first initial run, he gave up completely. I was so happy and relieved as I pulled it up.

    just re-watching this video again. As always -so good. My question is this- whats better to eat, the dog tooth or the uku? Asked from somebody who hunts in Hawaii and may never see a dog tooth tuna in his life!

      @DanielMann  3 роки тому

      They don’t get dogtooth in Hawaii, I forget the reason. I’d prefer to eat dogtooth, much nicer sashimi and bigger slabs than a jobfish.

      They will always perish but just washing them down with fresh water and keeping them away from sunlight will help.

    Daniel i'm from spain and i would like to get one of those full carbon spearguns you have. Do you make them on your own or do you have a sponsor that sells them. Sick vid. I hope to see you get a big dentex one day

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Nico, I have made those by myself. I don’t sell them as they take so much time to make. You should check out orca spearguns, made in Spain and very similar.
