  • After throwing forms on the wheel, many require trimming to be finished. In this video I show trimming three different forms I threw on the little Amazon wheel, while using a chum. Check out a variety of my other trimming videos for multiple other ways.
This video is in response to an email inquiring I received from NantFun Brand which sells these on Amazon. I often receive inquiries about the quality of these little wheels, and thought this would be a good chance to see how they work for myself. I have no opinion on longevity of the wheel, as I have only used it for the one session thusfar.
Although the one I show is blue, they are available in other colors.
I received the wheel as compensation for shooting the video. I receive no commission from NantFun, but if you use the following link, it is my associate’s link on Amazon to receive a small commission. amzn.to/3I2hxEu
You will find that the NantFun store on Amazon sells accessories as well.
I was impressed with the right out of the box ability to use the wheel. I attached the feet, and the hand lever. I opted to raise mine to standing height, as I don’t like to be hunched over when throwing- my back doesn’t appreciate it. It came with one bat that has protruding pins, and the wheel head has three holes. It had a few tools that came with it as well.
My one immediate concern upon using it was the lack of control at slow speeds. It went from medium speed to off. This is a concern if you are trying to spin slowly for refinement.

Check out my Wheel Throwing Playlist of videos with tips and tricks to successfully wheel throw pieces- from beginner to intermediate to advanced. I will be offering a good deal of EXPLANATION within the videos to help people understand the mechanics of why things work the way they do! I often tell my students they learn more from their mistakes than from their successes in throwing. In these videos in my series, I will try to distill my best tips I have learned from my successes and failures, and my students' struggles as well. Two things have led me to becoming the potter I am today. Countless hours of making pots, (and explaining how to make pots), and understanding and learning from my failures when pots didn’t work out! These are the things I want to share with you- to help YOU become a better potter!

Thank you so much! I have been humming and haring for months about getting a wheel for home. Your great videos have been invaluable! I go to pottery class 2 afternoons a week but want to be able to practice at home. So, thank you again! I’ve ordered the one you’re using in this video.

put a damp dish towel on the table below the wheel and it will add friction that will help keep it from "scooting across your table"

If you do end up going with the Vevor, I'd be interested to hear what differences you find between the two. I got myself a Huanyu, which superficially looks a lot like this one you've got now, except I am able to slow down the wheel at least so I am able to inscribe some slow spirals on my work... The thing is I regret not holding off for a unit which has a detached footpedal, for reasons of height. As it stands, I now mostly throw with the wheel elevated on some furniture risers, but the pedal is too high and I generally end up controlling it with the round handle in the crook of my knee. Haphazard at best! Being able to control the speed more intuitively would be helpful.

Hi Florence- The company is sending me one soon, so I can review that as well and compare!

I have an older model too without the pedal or bat pins. It just has a knob on the side to control the speed and splash pan is not removeable

Now that you have used this wheel for close to a week, what are your recommendations regarding the wheel? Is it worth the price? I am not necessarily looking to buy one, I am asking for anyone who might be looking for their first wheel.

I would first recommend trying to find a more substantial used wheel. If those can’t be found, then it may work as a first starter wheel. I’ve literally only used it for two short sessions- the throwing and the trimming- so about an hour’s work on it. I still am concerned about the lack of speed control. It may be fine if you can get it at a good price for a beginner- but if they all have the speed control issue on low speeds- that would be unfortunate. So I’m short- I hate to be dodgy- but I’ve not experienced enough to know if it will last, or if the quality on them is consistent.

@@KaransPotsAndGlass thanks, after seeing you use the wheel that would have been my assessment. I am, in fact, looking for a second wheel but I am looking for something considerably more substantial. My current wheel is a Brent Model C manufactured in 1974 (the year I graduated high school) it is still a great wheel that I bought used a few years ago.
