I tried out the bottom setter tool and found it to be an ingenious device which makes quick work of establishing a perfect bottom depth on your wheel thrown pots every time!
I am using Laguna B Mix cone 5-6 for these cup forms throwing on my Skutt classic wheel provided by Skutt.

Thank you for putting your tutorials out for us. As a new potter, I love watching your videos to learn more. Throwing is still hard for me, but I will practice and keep handbuilding as well.
I’ve had one of these for a while and it is a very versatile tool. In addition to creating a center hole you can pull it out further creating a wide bowl to almost a plate. I will sometimes angle the center spike inside the hole and pull up creating a nice curved cylinder right from the bottom. Lots of things you can do with this item.
I have purchased this Justin is a great potter to work with. He has made my makers stamps for me and they are wonderful as well. Try tar paper under your pieces. combined with Justin's bottom setter you never have to cut a pot off again
Tom Whitaker developed this over 10 years ago using pvc pipe - cheap and easy to make. You can see it in his youtube under Simple pottery tools Ball Opener - brilliant man.

Yep, Tom’s idea can be customized for thicknesses as thin or as thick as you like. I have made several and labeled the thicknesses with a magic marker.
I really like the one developed by Rich Brown - Sold by Speedball Ceramics! Much cheaper for those starting out.
I've seen those, but haven't tried them. I truly love Justin's adjustable thickness option!
Just ordered myself the speedball one. I’m in the Uk so definitely cheaper not having to pay extra on postage!
I have the one from Speedball. Two ways I think Justin's seems better- the rounded edge, and it's adjustable. The speedball one is simpler, it has just one depth, 1/4", and the centering post is a bit squared off. I always follow it up with a finger to round off the bottom. But, the simplicity makes it cheaper and easier to clean.
@bentonjackson8698 yes, I think his design is really terrific, the adjustable feature is really nice! And even with that it’s still super easy to clean!
Does the tool compress the bottom or is this still necessary?
Extra compression isn't necessary- Just smooth it if you have texture!
They are very pricey
Justin has been making these for a while. Speedball in my opinion, stole his idea.
I like Speedball and use their artista wheel. They are a good company i just can't agree with tgem Stealing another persons idea.
I was wondering who came first! I appreciate the quality and care he has taken with each piece, down to the really lovely packaging. And, the adjustable feature is really the bomb!
