In times of covid... even more so. I’m taking a course with a prof who can’t come to teach in person at all. You should get on the school pay roll, honestly
Me too.. been taking ceramics classes for 3 years and still have big trouble with the wheel.. im learning lots from your videos... just wanna master the wheel
Thanks so much for taking the time to explain how critical it is to trim pots at the appropriate dryness level. Most instructors skim over this step because they assume that students know this. They DON'T. It is the most important thing anyone can ever teach about ceramics, IMHO. I've been doing ceramics for 10 years and am having to learn and re-learn so many things. I spend much of my time viewing videos such as yours to pick up useful tips and tricks because most instructors don't really take the time to teach the basics. Kudos to you for your in-depth analysis!
I began wheel thrown pottery lessons in Feb of this year. I am not a natural. At all. Pre-Covid I'd had 9 lessons. I didn't want to lose the little progress I was making so at the start of our 'stay home' time I bought a wheel, some basic tools, and clay. I have been watching videos, trying various techniques, having fun, and making...things. This week I FOUND EARTH NATION CERAMICS. Thank you for these videos. Thank you thank you thank you thank you. By the time this is all over, I am going to end up with a garage full of bone-dry pots that may actually be worth keeping. I guess I'll have to figure out what comes next at that point - but until then I will work work work on throwing & trimming - with your help. And if I didn't say it before...thank you thank you thank you!
Started pottery on the wheel early this year and haven’t trimmed yet…. properly. Thank you so much for your tips and tricks. And I just have to say, I absolutely love your humour, it makes me laugh all the time!! Thank you again!
it's been about ten years since my ceramics class and I'm still watching these videos. Fun fact, I was the kid who (didn't steal) but was offered a bowl, all I had to do was trim it. I didn't do a good job lol. I put two rings at the bottom and that was my foot. Luckily no glaze ran onto the bottom.
“The first thing you do is pick it up and look at the bottom.” So true! I have been known to dump the contents of a cup because I was checking out the bottom.
I really like this guy. There was a point when I thought pottery is too difficult but watching him makes me wanna do it too. He has such good tips and is one of the reasons I'm now following my dreams. So thank you and your funny humour.
Thank you 😚 I have the great opportunity to practice pottery for free at someone’s house. But they’re rarely there with me and they’ve never taught pottery before. I have to watch a lot of videos and just practice myself. This is so helpful!
Thank you for these videos! My mom was an awesome ceramic artist, I have her pieces all over my house. She died a long time ago and I wish I could ask her for tips!! None of my ceramics classes have explained it as clearly as you do.
I'm actually more at an intermediate level at wheel throwing, but I checked this out because I want to learn how to tap center. However, you just do it so quickly, like my instructor when he does it, that I can't quite grasp how to do it. I guess it just takes a lot of practice. I'm glad that there are other methods to fall back on like using the pencil.
Awesome Video and thank you for the recap 😊 and it's really nice to see someone explain tap centering 😊 and I love in how you leave a little spiral in the middle of the bowl 😊
Awesome! Your teaching is great and super helpful! I plan to share this video on Google Classroom with my advanced ceramics students after my class demo! Thanks! Your clean editing is helpful!
Thank you, your classes are so so helpful! One bit of info I am missing as a beginner is drying. How best to achieve the leather state? What is the actual profess after you take it off the wheel? How long to wait until you wrap it? How to wrap it? For how long? Plastic or cloth? Wooden board or a plastic board? Baking paper? Leave a gap for the air or not? I know many things will depend on the air temperature but a general indication would be very very handy!
I've been throwing on the wheel for three weeks now and trimming my pieces terribly. I'm about to go into the lab hours my ceramics class has and follow your instructions. Thank you for the clear instructions!
I can't thank you enough for all these instructions!!!! I followed your instructions on how to center and pull my clay!!! And the results were just fantastic.... I had my first cylinder yesterday :) I can't wait to try your trimming instructions next time!!! You are an awesome potter and a teacher! Thank you
I was trimming bowls in open studio today and I’m pretty sure that I had one of each leather type and I even found an old bone dry I’d forgotten about! I’m struggling with trimming a flat bottom and I’m guessing my problem is with keeping my pressure constant. Thank you for your video.
I think you just saved my next vessel with the pencil trick. I cant tap center and have tried so many times I'm convinced its my bat sticking to the vessel too much to allow it to shift without moving at least an couple inches.
Your lesson so fun and not bored at all. But the problem is , it's so fun that I almost forget I have my clay laying around too long. My routine: Take all my clay, tools and tray, find your video and watch to warm up, then to another video and another and another. By the time I think I'm ready, it's time to sleep. My clay waiting there 500 years.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You’re a good teacher and you spoke well! I learned a lot. Can’t wait to see more of your demonstrations. ☺️ oh, and I’ll try the tapping method to center! 👍
I swear I learn more from your videos then I have in any class I've taken.
So...have I...thank you!!!
💜
these are my words too on your videos
I was about to posted exactly the same thing
In times of covid... even more so. I’m taking a course with a prof who can’t come to teach in person at all. You should get on the school pay roll, honestly

I love your sense of humor. I am completely entertained while I am learning. Best combination for instruction. Thank you!

My 7 & 5 year old boys love you and think you’re HILARIOUS. Thanks for such helpful and humorous videos.

Thanks for perking up my day and making me smile! Your tips are amazing.Blessings and keep serving your fan base.
Sir your are the best teacher... thanks to share with us your knowledge.
you are correct, I was able to pull my first bowl after struggling, but his explanations are always easy to understand
Thank you for all these tips! I struggled a ton with trimming and watched this video and then was able to trim really nice feet! Thank you sooo much!!
Best explanations ever. I laugh at all you videos. Totally enjoyable to watch.
this was probably the most helpful trimming tutorial i've found online
Wish I watched this before the trimming class I just had. You explained it so much better than my teacher
I really like this guy. There was a point when I thought pottery is too difficult but watching him makes me wanna do it too. He has such good tips and is one of the reasons I'm now following my dreams. So thank you and your funny humour.
You are fantastic, this is the first thumbs up I've given the pottery videos as you are clear and make so much sense. Thanks!

I haven't actually done anything on the wheel yet, but thanks to you and several of your videos for beginners, I get the concepts. Now to practice...

Subbed. Good video. It didn't occur to me that finishing a piece is pretty much "lathing" .. thats dope
Awesome explanation of the stages of clay and centering for trimming. Thank you!
Excellent instruction--now, off to class to put this into practice!
I just said, while alone in my living room, "you're a genius" when I saw how you remove your clay wedges from the lip of the bowl.
I'm just doing what I was taught. :)
I cried when i finally trimmed a nice bottom lol
🥰
Thank you I’m hoping I get an A+ by the end of this project in school

Wow i really enjoyed your video you teach pretty good and fun :) I’m about to trim a bowl and this helped a lot
Im starting trimming in class later this week and this video is super helpful. Thanks dood
You're videos on ceramics are the best I've found. Your dad jokes are terrible, but I'll let go bc I love your detailed videos.
I think the pencil circles on top instead of doing the marks on the side gets you there more neatly with less correction
amaaaaaazing!!! i'm excited to try! let's see if it's gonna work
Great videos/Great teaching style-keep it light !
I absolutely love your class!!
Nice lesson 👍💕
Do you do anything with the rim of the bowl after trimming the bottom?
I’m crap at trimming - this is really helpful! Keen to get back on the wheel now
