Just to clear things up. Dena said people who say there aren’t any opportunities out there besides DOC are small minded.. she did NOT say correction officers are small minded. Some people are twisting her words severely...
First I’d like to say good for you on deciding to quit your job on the island it states that you know what’s best for yourselves meaning making good money or living longer in good health so I salute the both of you for that also I’d like to ask if you don’t mind what were the both of you making hourly at the time of resigning ?
Y’all got to talk about the houses the environment it’s a dark story to tell but it’s a hit and ppl who never visited it especially the youth who think the shit isn’t nothing
hell tell the truth, DOC is small-minded and the employees are completely brainless!
Dena and Phil, I retired as a correctional police officer from Jersey back in 2015 with 28 years of service. I respect both of your decision to resign as officers and I am glad you realized it earlier in your career. I wish you both the best of luck and enjoy your new path.
@@robertortiz8540 we appreciate that and wish you the best, congratulations and enjoy retirement!
I did 27 years on Rikers. The job isn’t for everyone. It’s good that you realized it early in your career. All I say is bless the people that are still there and don’t put them down for their choice to stay. Stay blessed and enjoy the new path you choose!!!
Thank you, it wasn’t our intention to put anyone down. We’re wishing everyone well regardless if they decide to stay or leave. Stay blessed also!
My uncle retired from Rikers a few years ago after 25 years and he did say it's way worse now because of the ridiculous overtime and the inmates are running things now.
I'm so proud of you guys. I supervised you both and y'all were good officers especially you D. A lot of things are political and they want the chaos to support the closing. The place isn't properly managed and yes,, the inmates definitely run the environment. Glad you both had the courage to do what so many of us talk ourselves out of everyday. I'm glad you two are happy and living life by your own terms.Good luck and I will continue to support the channel.
Agreed! We appreciate your support & are wishing you well, praying you stay safe ❤️❤️
Thanks for this
Hey 👋🏾 I know you😁. I believe we used to work together.
Thank you for putting this out people need to know what's going on on the island thank you for choosing each other rather than a paycheck thank you for choosing your mind and your mental health over money. I know exactly what you two were going through and everything that you said is the truth continue long life and health and God bless
Thank you!! Appreciate the support. God bless you as well
Been a CO on Rikers for 15 years, God Bless both of you. I am so glad to see that you left this hell. Thank you for speaking the truth.
You’re almost at the finish line, we’re happy for you! And God bless you as well! The truth definitely needs to get out, hopefully change is imminent so your last few years into retirement are smooth.
Same here … doing for 13 years 👍🏽💪🏽
A lot of the weapons, drugs, and contraband is snuck in there by "dirty C O's". New York City corrections need a plan designed by you guys from within the ranks. Sometimes you have to overlap the tours to "sweep" houses and buildings. You know that you got some C O's male/female sexing it up with inmates that not good too. I don't blame you guys entirely, look at how the DeBlasio Administration did New York City streets, so it started on the outside and worked its way in. The Mayor destroyed this city completely. You had a moment for social and justice reform throughout New York City, but instead of building from the last 30 years success, they open the flood gates and tried from "get"....bad move! No strategy whatsoever! * This is not to disrespect any of the C.O.'s I'm just saying). I see cities like Chicago just the same (some bad apples in the police force is all it takes).
Are you still there working? Do they respect you or give you a hard time?
@@blazinpa09201980hey man, I’m joining the CO career soon. Any advice
The title got my attention also! But hearing some of your experiences during the time there I can understand why you both decided to leave. You guys will be alright. I am sure your journey is just beginning 🙏🏾
Thank you! We believe that as well, we’re so excited for the future ❤️
Wow!! That’s crazy! I applaud y’all for even dealing with that for so long because I can only imagine how chaotic it was living that life day by day but I wish you guys the best of luck in your future endeavors 💕
Thank you so much ❤️ that was the best thing we could’ve done for us
I work in the island too. I wanna quite so bad. I feel my Mental health is definitely in jeopardy since I joined in 2017. I applaud y’all both.
Thank you! I never advise people what to do, but I always say make sure you put your mental health first and foremost. The stress is killing officers and the department really couldn’t care less. Lots of people say think about the benefits, pay etc but there’s many options out there and at the end of the day you have one life and you deserve to be happy! Stay safe!
Whatever you do, decide early where you are not invested. After 10 years it becomes a mental game and walking away becomes harder. I retired from there 6 years ago. It's a whole lot worst now, if that is even possible. Stay safe and prayed up
MUTCH RESPECT FOR PUTTING YOUR FEET DOWN AND DOING WHATS BETTER I DEFINITELY SUBSCRIBED KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK 💪🏻💪🏻
Appreciate the support!
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
You both are absolutely right about everything. Everything you said is dead on.
Mental health is everything , starting to really understand that now as I’m older
For sure mental health has to be #1 priority, being so busy day to day we tend to just power through instead of actually address it
Being a NYC Correction Officer isn’t good for everyone & the job unfortunately isn’t like it was back in the days when staff had control & you didn’t have to worry about getting hurt or indicted. BTW I’ve been retired 18 years & wouldn’t recommend that job to anyone
The job has changed for the worst and I agree/ understand what you are saying. As far as the comment of it being for small minded and or people with no aspirations to do anything else or someone without a degree, a lot of people have acquired their degrees while working on this job, a lot of people took this job because there were no jobs in their fields of study. The culture/ dynamics of the job have changed due to the past and this is what we are left with. I commend you guys for making the right choice for yourselves. And for everyone who is still behind the gate please stay safe, and for everyone contemplating leaving make the right choice for you and your families always. 💙
Yes I agree, I have friends on the job with degrees and other things going for themselves... I generalized the statement when it was really for the people that kept telling me there was nothing else out there... & I’m wishing everyone that’s still on the job well, hoping & praying that they stay safe ❤️❤️
You guys are going to be OK. Happiness and mental health is more valuable than any job. God Bless you both!
Absolutely, thank you for the words and God bless you as well!
God bless you both on your new journey. I respect anyone who makes a decision to change their life for the better or to make them HAPPY!! Peace of mind is EVERYTHING 👌🏾💯
Thank you, we appreciate your support! & yes peace of mind/quality of life is everything ❤️
@@denaphil Yeess!! That's BOLD!!! 💪🏾💪🏾🙏🏾
God bless you guys. It was a pleasure working with you. I agree money & benefits are good but not worth the toll it takes on your mental state and home life.
God bless you too bro, definitely was a pleasure working with you! And I couldn’t agree more, well said.
Hi there..I just subbed! Thx for sharing y'all experience and confirming that I have to go before it's to late. I keep praying and thinking I can power through it but the mental exhaustion is winning. I've never been an angry person or cursing all the time. This job has changed me only after 3 years and I'm strong enough to admit that it's time to go. Damn the $, helping people all that! I gotta save myself. A few more months Lord help me and my corrections career is over. Blessings to my bros and sisters still in the trenches and blessings to y'all for having the courage to say what we all truly feel ❤️💯❤️
We really appreciate this comment. We definitely saw that same change in ourselves over the course of time we were there too. In my opinion though, it shows more strength to leave and start over versus staying on the job being miserable for the comfort of the paycheck. So I think you’re making a good decision. There are many careers and options out there to make equal or even more money than corrections while having a normal work schedule, we’re sure you’ll be fine. Keep us updated and stay safe!
Resigned today effective immediately!! Feel like a free inmate! Thx for all your support and hope you guys are well ❤️
Happy for you ♥️ there is life after corrections! I know you’ll be fine
Love the video!! All of your comments are straight facts.
Thank you!
Amazing brother..to anyone reading this, I worked with Phil many times on the Island and I can tell you that this man was in the trenches, in the worst jail..
My guy big sky
Thanks for sharing, wish you the best, both of you. I’ve been C/O for 9+ years and is not a pleasant job at all, I knew that going in. God bless both of you and God bless all C/Os still on the job and keep us safe
Thank you, God bless you as well... praying everyone there remains safe ❤️
Hi guys! Capt heeralal here! Congrats and so happy for you both! Good luck with your relationship and all your future endeavors
Thank you we appreciate your support and wish you the best as well ❤️❤️
Perfectly said ! This job isn’t for everyone and I am so glad that you guys are shining the light on what actually goes on inside these facilities. I feel as if you guys spoke for all of us who are consistently making the decisions in our heads but is too afraid to take that leap of faith. I am just thankful that you both resigned and left with your peace of mind and have zero regrets. I would like to personally thank Rojas for being the best coworker anyone could have ever asked for. You made coming to work easy for me, I literally can not imagine how my first 2 years would’ve went without you by my side lol . I love you sissy ! Best of luck guys I am always here rooting for you both
P.S. I’m patiently waiting on the marriage/family blogs lol ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks sisssssyyyyyy ❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰 lmao you know the feelings mutual and I couldn’t have gotten through my two years without you!!!! I would always tell you that you were my motivation for coming to work on my last! 🤍🤍 you are one of the strongest officers I know, I always tell you that... and they soon come, patiently waiting for Phil to pop the question 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol hey!! I tuned in so fast because the title shocked the hell outta me 😫
Lol yes we’ve had it!!! We are finally free 😩😩😩
😂😂😂😂😂 best decision you made in y’all lives!! Now focus on what you love to do and put all of your energy into it! Life will run very smoothly!💯
Definitely on that type of frequency now, well said
Thanx for being honesty. Good to see you guys are doing well.
Thank you ❤️
Bless you guys. I am getting ready to go to the academy to work in Santa Barbara California. Stuff like this makes me want to rethink this career. Thank you.
Don’t allow this video to rethink your decision. Rikers is statistically one of the worst jails in America. I’m not saying the jail you get assigned to will be any better, but there’s a great chance. You may genuinely like the career. Good luck in the academy.
I did 9 years in MASS as a co. I just quit 2 weeks ago. Best decision of my life.
Same. Cheers to freedom 🥂
@@denaphil thanks for keeping it real on your channel 👍
Great video I started the job in 2006 at obcc, I resigned in 2015. Best decision ever i have no regrets. Right before I left I saw the changes within the department and like you both mentioned all that was going on 6 years ago so I can only imagine how much worst it has gotten. Good luck to you both
Thank you! It’s such a good feeling leaving 🥂 appreciate your support
Yep.....I HATED the weak support at OBCC CPSU...glad I left too
Hey 👋🏾
Props to y’all . I use to work in bkdc then got transferred into rndc once it closed.. I was literally on the brink of a mental health collapse. I’m at peace with my decision to leave and now I’m working on a nursing degree. More power to y’all two
Trust me, we feel you. You definitely made the right decision, mental health always gotta come first. But congratulations on the career change, and good luck to you. 💪
that's def smart, that's a bigger bag. better opportunities and less stress, if nursing was for me I would go that route as well.
Great video I work on the island also. Been here for 15 years. I’ve had to go on anxiety meds cause of the chest pains. I’m thinking of quitting everyday. I’m so happy for u guys I wish u the best
Thank you, my anxiety was really bad when I worked there too, so I know how you feel... praying you stay safe, thanks for your support ❤️
Shit like this is crazy man stay safe bro ..
WOW! My father was a NYC Correction Officer when I was a kid and I have a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and was considering becoming a NYC Correction Officer because Iike law enforcement and the fact that this job pays well and offers great benefits (I also wanted to join ESU while there). I was even in the hiring process but was placed on a medical hold because of an injury.
But after seeing this video I don't think I'll consider a career with the NYC Department of Correction anymore. Thanks for letting us know what it really is like for those of us thinking about joining.
Since the making of the video, the conditions and assaults actually got about 3x worse from everything we hear and see. An update video from current officers should actually be done. But we appreciate the feedback. We didn’t make this video as a deterrent for those thinking about joining, but definitely wanted to paint the real picture. Thanks for watching.
Glad to see ya’ll doing good 💪🏼
Hope you’re staying safe! ❤️
You guys have more Courage than most.I'm sorry that you guys had to leave that job , but I understand, I worked as a Officer for 20 years and one month in Rikers. I have been retired for 6 years and your right, I had no degree and it prevented me from being promoted. I still got a decent retirement but if you can find another profession then great. The one thing that we always say is that this Job is not for everyone and we all know it's easy to get another job once you say you worked at Rikers.
Absolutely, the job wasn’t for us. But I agree, having that job on your resume does open more doors. We’re glad you made it work though. Congratulations and continue to enjoy retirement.
You guys were great Officers. Definitely potential to be Supervisors. Good luck with all your future endeavors and God speed.
If they "were great officers" then administrators won't pick them. They want people they can mode
I had retired 3 years ago, I remember when I turned in my vest the officer automatically checked off “Resign” on the form without asking me. That’s how bad it was, he was so use to officers turning in their vest because they were quitting.
Wow, that really just exemplifies it. On the other hand, enjoy your retirement! 🙌
Accurate as hell!🎯
Yo rep it’s Diaz, I left that shit too bro. Best decision i ever made. Physical and mentally I never felt better.
My bro Diaz I’m happy to hear that fr, life after corrections is definitely different
yo Diaz, it’s Sky - glad your doing great my bro
I quit after 3 plus years, including a break in service. 3 commands and being fed up. I found a better job, still in law enforcement although I was ready to just give up on it. Glad you 2 got out.
We were transferred once as well, but we’re glad you got out too! It’s always better on the outside, stay safe!
I remember takin the test..passing the test..they callin me & I told them I’ll call back & never did..salute to y’all & continue being good
Im surprised they didn’t call you again, but appreciate it we hope you’re doing good as well.
Thank you for this video..Just got offered this job & been debating whether I'ma take the job or not...This helped alot
You’re welcome. Our purpose wasn’t to steer people away, but to tell people the truth about the job that they wouldn’t ever know until they walked in the jails.
That’s sad. I’m glad you made it out!
This is the rikers cop and I'm here to tell it:
THERE IS LIFE AFTER CORRECTIONS 😁
I’m glad you got out of that toxic environment. ✅✅ Nothing good can come from stress.
Thank sis 😩 you know I was going through it 😓
Facts I recently left and started my own business and if I could do that anyone can
Sometimes that leap of faith is all it takes, we applaud this fr!
Very informative video. I see all those issues at the facility I work at. The inmates are more civil than staff.
I absolutely agree. What facility do you work at?
I'm very glad you two made your decision early in your career. Unfortunately I didnt, but fortunately I did 23 years and retired recently in good health...can't say I'm not a little 730 but I'm out of the zoo.lol. Corrections wasn't always like this and I caught the first good 6 years of it when I got on and then saw the dramatically changes years after. My heart goes out to the men in women of the Corrections today....its by far the worst un- respected job in the city, and I can only blame the politicians and poor leadership in the department that's gotten it this worst. You guys got love out of it. God bless you guys in takecare.
Congratulations on your retirement 🥂 my heart goes out to them as well... God bless you as well and thanks for your support!!
@@denaphil thank you very much
I retired from there. I agree with everything you say except the part about people not having degrees or small minded. First off you need a degree to get the job. Second small minded. There are many amazing people working that job. I wish you both all the happiness and peace life can bring you. I feel God puts jobs in your path. Your path was to meet eachother. Be happy.
Congrats on your retirement. I’m wishing everyone that still works there well, I didn’t mean to generalize the statement... I’m also thankful for the experience and fully believe God put the job in our path for a reason. Thanks for your support!
Grateful for this video, my bf is working there praying he leaves one day
Praying he stays safe ❤️
I’ve worked 5 years in county jail as a detention officer and in prison as a CO and man it sucks the coworkers make it a toxic environment, the long hours are bad working 12 hours being tired all the time man the money just is not worth it you don’t have time to enjoy your life. Pretty much every decision you make can be your last you get into trouble for a lot of stupid things. My biggest problem for wanting to leave is because the higher ups are all full of themselves
It seems as if this is basically the culture of corrections. No matter what city or state we hear stories from, they’re all very similar. Overworked, very toxic, and issues with higher ups. I agree it’s most definitely not worth it. It’s sad how many times we hear of old coworkers dying shortly after retirement. When we hear those stories which are becoming often, it reassures we made the right choice. I also agree, every decision you make can be your last. The money isn’t worth it especially in NYC. We appreciate you for sharing! 🙌
Wow I’m not surprised very sad but your mental health is wayyy more important!!!
Absolutely
Hello, great video! This video pretty much confirmed just about everything I thought/knew of NYC DOCS. I was wondering if you could possibly offer any comparative/contrasting insight on NYS DOCCS?
Thanks for watching. I don’t know much about NYS DOC, but I’ve had a couple friends work for nys and they didn’t like it and ended up leaving.
Good for you that you got out soon before giving years to a job that doesn’t apréciate you. I work for nys DOCCS and it’s not that bad been there about 6 years but you’ll have more issues with coworkers and supervisors then the convicts for sure. Best of luck in what ever you guys decide to do next.
Thank you we appreciate your support! And wish you well also 😊
God Bless you. You tried. Different culture now a days. You are a beautiful couple
God Bless your future endeavors ❤🙏🏾
Thank you 🙏🏽😇
Great content being an officer is not for everyone back in the days it was good the inmates didn't run the island the officers did it was fun to go to work you guys came in the wrong time Retirement is wonderful 💪💪
I completely agree. Thanks for watching and continue to enjoy retirement! 🙏
Every thing is not for every body I did 30 years and I wait for checks so most of the new breed is not cut out for that life but again its a different time in correction I started in 89 and retired in 2019 there are people in charge that should never have been in charge the management is trash period good luck you are right to tell your peers THERE IS LIFE AFTER LEAVING CORRECTIONS
Yup. Hopefully things get better since the commissioner is out, but that’s hard to believe... leaving was the best decision we could’ve made!
You both are 1000% right i was shocked that there is no camaraderie, im fron the military, if a sergeant or captain behaved like the captains at rikers they would not last long.
Right. We both aren’t from the military but from our understanding, it’s probably the complete opposite of the military’s camaraderie.
I totally agree with the both of you. I was a CO in 1990 to 1992 GMDC C73. The job was good, but I didn't like the mandatory OT. I went to NYPD, and it was the best move I ever made. I got promoted twice and it's a job that had my back.
That was a great transition, we’re happy you made it work. Did you end up retiring from nypd?
@@denaphil Yes I retired in 2010 thank God.
You did what was right for you guys!!!
Yes, we definitely did
Congratulations to your new life if freedom & bliss... 🍾🎉🎈🎊
Thank you! ❤️
I did NYC corrections for 4 years,
Man, we were on lockdown almost every single day, I knew at 2pm, I was not going home.
I did it in 1991, so it was a very different Job, And never, did a inmate assualt us and get away with it..that inmate would get punished.
I rolled over to FDNY in 1995, the best decision I ever made
Corrections is such a burn out job
I felt like a inmate after one year
I felt dirty, Nasty
I did make a lot of money, but it’s a difficult job
Good luck with your life, it’s not ending, it’s just beginning
Thank you! Happy that you switched and realized you made the right choice
Good for you I'm glad you quit!!! Retired in 2016. Miss it like root canal
Thank you!
Am so happy for you guys and doc def lost 2 good officers. I wish you guys nothing but the best
Thank you ❤️ praying you stay safe and wishing you well also!
I'm a retired C.O. God bless you Two. Best of luck in your future endeavors 🙏
Only the strong survive 💪
Oh shit, I came out with her 2/11/19 - sometimes things don’t always workout. Good luck to you both.
thanks for telling our story.
Np ❤️
You'll definitely find work somewhere else . I'm a LT and I agree and it's also the Co-workers , Administration. It's definitely a challenge the old heads will not come to help you and they gotta go.
I agree, co-workers and administration definitely play roles in the issues. In my experience, there were senior officers who would completely ignore and belittle new officers but also senior officers who would always lend a hand.. it was 50/50. We appreciate your comment! In what state are you an LT?
The current condition on rikers island can be attributed to mismanagement and also rogue officers from the 80’s , and 90’s . Programs cap. and programs dep aren’t ensuring inmates are receiving their services .
Absolutely, this is a major attribution.
That’s insane... My friends husband is a CO and he’s so angry and aggressive all the time
Yeah it’s tough being under all that stress all the time.. tends to end up keeping you in a natural state of aggression when you don’t know how to deal with it.
Respectfully, y'all came on the Job at the wrong time. They also sold y'all a dream at the academy. If they would have told y'all the truth about this job from OJT or Shock Friday , many of the new ppl that came on this job within the last 5 to 8 yrs may have quit in the academy. I do agree with y'all about the many of the supervisors; they failed you because they never sat on a B post to understand what officers go through. Also sitting on a B post 13+ yrs ago was very different than what the department allowed y'all to experience. Many of the ppl in charge have 2 years or less more than y'all did, while telling you what to do. I don't agree with what she said about ppl that don't have degrees or ppl that are close minded stay on the job. This job wasn't meant for everyone. However, I'm glad to see ppl like yourselves change a situation that wasn't right with your spirits.
Straight facts...
I agree completely, they needed to be brutally honest in the academy and not try to sugar coat it with their lifestyle... as for my statement I didn’t mean to generalize it, I just meant it for the ppl that kept saying there’s nothing else out there... appreciate the support!
I started in 1980. The Wardens ran their jails not the politicians. The housing area Officers gave the inmates what they were entitled to, nothing more. When an inmate got violent they were usually sent out on a hospital run. We didn’t have cameras following the probe teams so that they could take things out of context and jam the Officer up. We fought together and wrote together and the brass had our backs. In the mid 80’s commissioner Mcmickens started transferring female officers in bulk to mens jails and that was the start of the downfall of the dept. I know that’s now not politically correct to say but I think men should work mens jails with a few exceptions and women should work women’s jails. Females Officers shouldn’t have to come to work thinking that they could be sexually molested at work. And you can’t properly do the job always thinking that you are going to be fired or arrested for whatever you do.
It may not be politically correct to say but I do agree with you. Female officers shouldn’t have to come into work worrying if they’ll be sexually assaulted that day. I honestly think nycdoc is down a horrible path with no return. I think during your time, the jail was how it’s supposed to be. At the end of the day, it’s jail. But politicians are trying to turn it into adult day care.
I resigned almost a year ago after doing 3 yrs best thing I’ve done in my life life is goooooooood. Leave now the job makes you think is the best job you ever gonna get and if you leave your not gonna survive that’s a dammnnn lie run from Doc
MENDEZ I STILL LOVE U KID LOL
Agreed!
One thing it will do is give you solid communication and people skills
Yes I agree, that’s one great benefit of the job I have to admit
I quit as a c.o in January. After 7 yrs. I'm not happy I quit. Having no money is worse than having the job. I have a degree and can't find anything. So I disagree and you'll see soon enough. But hope you find something great and can encourage me.
We’re actually both doing much better financially and emotionally.. best decision we made. Quitting that job and being under pressure is the time where you find out how to financially situate yourself whether it’s through a job, passive income, self employment. The same hours doc forced you to do.. put those hours into yourself.
Wish you guys luck it really isn't for everyone it's a dangerous and stressful job.
Thank you, good luck to you as well!
I work state corrections for almost 12yrs and there's days you don't want to go in thankfully the inmates aren't the problem at my prison I've worked with make and female it's bad at most locations but mine not so bad but I've seem it go from bad to worst its the staff with me no camaraderie pure evil, but the policies and who put fourth these policies and procedures never worked in a jail a day in their lives and don't have a clue what we as officers go through on a daily basis and the mental toll it takes on officers. I say they need to come work in a jail/prison for a month and see if they agree to the policies and procedures they set fourth. All the people that get locked out for just doing their jobs. They cater to these inmates and they have more rights than we do it sad. I tell officers all the time if you know this job isn't for you then leave in the first 5yrs otherwise you will be stuck there for the rest of your career. Glad you guys decided health over money. My brother works at the beacon I pray for him everyday he goes home safe. Praying for all at Rikers there is life after corrections🙏🏾
We have lots of friends at the beacon, we’re praying for your brother and all fellow officers as well. And I completely agree with you, I think the #1 issue with multiple different correction departments is that it’s run by people who don’t even have experience jailing. It’s mind boggling how contradicting it is. But we applaud you for pushing strong for 12 years+ and pray for your safety!
Wow and I been trying to get on the job since 2016. Took more than 2 years to pass physical and then issues with college credits and then the hiring freeze.
I know they just scheduled exams for October so they should be hiring soon but at the same time that department changes it’s mind every other minute.
Hey guys I don't know you but I did 30yrs on that job, and it was very different from what it is now ,I retired a yr ago and like I said it was very different. I definitely commend you guys for leaving that mess of a job. I use to recommend that job to ppl but as the job started to change I stopped. Understand the rsn the job got horrible is because of the supervisors they are scared and a lot of the supervisors don't have any time on the job a lot of them took the test for capt. So they didn't have to deal with inmates and when I say no time I'm talking less than five yrs. So honestly what do they know about how to handle a situation? They don't !!!!!, and that's what is getting ppl hurt they are puppets in this game and the wardens are scared of the chiefs, and the chiefs are scared of the commissioner that has absolutely no clue about how to do her job, another rsn the job is so dangerous now is because they are allowing civilians that have never done this job or any job like this to run the department and because of that officers are getting hurt unfortunately, and what is sadder is they don't care because it's not them. Again I commend you guys for getting out, and I pray for those who feel like they are stuck.🙏🙏🙏
Wow congrats on 30 years 🥂 the department has definitely changed even in the short time we were there, I agree a lot of supervisors are scared and leave officers on post to fend for themselves... it’s unfortunate the way the department works. We appreciate your support and are also praying for the officers that feel stuck as well ❤️

Everyone’s experience is different you said you felt fear being outnumbered I never feel that it’s the same ppl from outside in the neighborhood I grew up I go to work joke and laugh and talk and work the room I’m a nurse and left nursing to be a co I could leave any day and go back but I don’t dislike enough
Yes, everyone experience is different some may be better than ours which is great... happy you’re safe and doing well!
Angela sound like you went to be a co to boo love and be dirty
10 years as a co and I hate every bit of it. We get paid a ton at my jail too. 150k no overtime and yet I would do anything to leave
They try their best to compensate for the mental breakdown the job gives. But If you’ve done 10, you can make it to the finish line.
Damm sounds like all the jails are messed up. I work at DC jail. I’m handing my badge in next week
I don’t blame you at all
Its a crappy job. The whole environment is depressing. Okay you get benefits and all that but i guarantee you'll live and feel better doing a job you like. The pay is okay, its the blood money overtime that brings in good money. Its a job where if an officer gets stabbed the higher ups will ask "what did you do to deserve this" and blame the officer. You will not be backed up even if you're 100% right. I know because i quit too and its the best choice i ever made!!
I worked for DOC from 1991-2011 unfortunately people don't make the same decision you guys made. The job is not for everyone but please dont say its not a good job it just wasn't good for you. And please don't act like the job is for not educated people. Give the respect to the Officers that stay and try to do the job.
Congrats on your retirement... I didn’t say the job was for the uneducated, I was referring to ppl that say there’s nothing else out there... As for the CO’s that still out there I am wishing them well
I realized this Department didn't have my back like I had its back. So I left and write novels about prison.
I was in C95, did 2 years and couldnt take it anymore. Too much b.s not worth it. Inmates deff run the island. I would go into work and worry about getting written up for shit that i had no control over. Yes benefits are great, money is great but your mental health is more important. Glad i left and Im good now.
I couldn’t agree more. Since we left we haven’t had an ounce of regret and there’s so many more opportunities outside of doc. Glad you’re doing good though!
I was going to apply, but then I heard that Rikers has doors that can't be unlocked, so they leave them unlocked (otherwise a CO could get locked in there and they won't be able to get in to assist.) But that means the detainees can come and go as they please. In a place like that, it seems like you can either hide behind the cage/glass or you can use your fists. I can't go that way. I won't take a job where I have to be a bruiser.
I’m confused which doors you’re talking about that can’t be unlocked. There’s cell doors that don’t lock properly but I’m not sure of any doors that can’t be unlocked
I was at amkc for a year and a half. That job they sell you a dream. I worked the dark side damn near all the time. Niggas popping out all night refusing court. Me failing probation was a blessing
It really was! Happy you got out
I did near 10 years working in the feds as a CO. I never been around such negative people . Dam working in prisons 🗑
Yep that’s another thing, hard to keep a positive mindset while you’re surrounded by complete negativity.
Thanks for sharing
Great video.
Thank god I can leave in a few months. Been a corrections officer in nyc for almost twenty years. Came on the job in 2001. Just surviving now. I feel sorry for the officers that got another two years to do. I think it's going to get worse.
Sadly, I agree with you. From the constant stories we still hear it doesn’t seem like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for anyone still in the early stages of their career. But happy to hear you can kick your feet back soon. Enjoy your retirement! 🙏
@@denaphil yet, trying to survive in tick. Retire in one piece
Absolutely. 🙏
@@denaphil hopefully, I should be able to leave in October, November the latest. Trying to figure out my next move now .
Feel a little institutionalized
I don’t blame you, after 20 years it’s almost inevitable. But I say book a flight and think about your next move while laying down on the beach.
That was one of my concerns that you’re in there alone with like 50 inmates smh that’s so absurd to me! This should be changed
Yeah, the officer is ridiculously outnumbered. When I first started, it was 1 Officer to 60 inmates but then was decreased to 50. Something that should absolutely be changed.
Should have put ur resume in to become a desk guy , call the union , use ur hooks, grieve things .
Good for you guys that awesome! What do y’all do now ?
We invest in stocks, currently work with children with special needs and we are also looking to get into real estate... Appreciate your support!
I’ve been a correction officer for about four months now I already have a slashing on my tour and I’ve already been assaulted. If you try to stand your ground in anyway these inmates can be dangerous. The idea that one person is supposed to watch over 50 people and be responsible for them is fucking ludicrous that’s how ass backwards this job is. There’s no proactive mindset in the department just reactive
My wife and i meet on the job as CO'S and quit it was the best thing we ever did.
It was the best thing we ever did as well, life is much better on the outside is every aspect. Glad you guys are doing well!
Them chest pains I felt that
😫😫 they were definitely no joke
I applied for NYS corrections and going to take my agility test in 2 weeks. I live in NYC, and didn’t realize that I wouldn’t be able to work at the city jails (closest to me). Do you have any choice in placement? I’m worried they’ll try and put somewhere 2.5-3 hours away :-(
Im not sure how considerate NYS corrections is when it comes to location. For nyc corrections they would try to atleast assign you to a jail that’s in the same borough you live but didn’t always work out that way.
@@denaphil after nyc academy. do we have a choice to go to the island or not?
They may or may not assign you to a jail on the island, but you don’t have a say in that decision.
Yo come to dsny I quit corrections in 98 now 18yrs in dsny I love every bit of it and the bread and benefits is good
Sanitation? If you can get me in, I’m coming lol
I worked on rikers for 2 years. The relationship between the old and new officers was bad. I felt alone. Also I used to run to alarms. I would see out of shape officers walking to alarms. I d say I gotta depend on them. Being in a dorm with 50 or a cell block with 30 on each side it was a lot to deal with. The inmates give officers control. If you can do it more power to you.
I agree with everything you said. Although in regard to seeing officers walking to alarms, I remember seeing officers hiding in the bathroom smh. It’s a downhill career in my opinion.
True also your dealing with some that have nothing to lose. Officers are truly on the front line in potentially dangerous situations. I heard of many tough officers who got beat down bad. Everyday an officer goes in it could be their day. Bless all who still work on Rikers. It's rough and dangerous. I left in 2008 no regrets.
Absolutely, many of them have nothing to lose. It’s only getting worse and worse. I think we both made the right decision.
@@denaphil Agreed
They look good together💯
Thanks!
I also quit I hated that job
I had a question about filling out a résumé for a corrections position, I have had jobs where I’ve only been at one day and some one month I left all those jobs, my job currently I have been at for almost a year, should I still include all my work experiences even though some I’ve been at one day
I would list all of them because I believe they verify all your work experiences some how.. regardless, you’ll get hired they’re desperate for anybody
@@denaphil should I explain why I left those jobs next to my work experience/ each job I’ve had
If they ask for the reason you left yeah, but honestly it’s nothing to worry about.. as long as you don’t have any serious medical conditions or arrests you’ll be hired
