After you complete the academy do you get a choice in which prisons you want to work at? I live in NYC and there are only 4 state prisons I can get to via public transportation. I’m worried about being sent to a location 2.5-3 hours away.. ugh :-(

You need to find the prison close to you. Then they set your training up. Sometimes u have to drive for the training but not when you finish

The BI in federal corrections is backwards. They do a quick NCIC and credit check, and boom you’re hired. Then they do the in debth background investigation while you are already working. Meaning, if you don’t pass that, you can be let go 7 or 8 months
in to your employment. Then after all that, you go through a BI every 5 years.

It’s a very thankless job. Nobody cares about what didn’t happen and that’s your job is to try and make stuff not happen. Short handed so a lot of double shifts not just a few hours over but a whole extra shift back to back. Nobody is nice to you at all. I would talk to numerous people in the profession. Watch their talk with Anthony gangi before you make the decision. You will be a very drained and unappreciated person in the profession and you will miss out on children and family functions. Not trying to scare you away because they need tons of people but I also do t want you to start and then quit and that’s another thing because the officers see that so much they will not give you respect until you earn that

Don't. I was a CO for 6 years. It is the most stressful job I ever experienced and I did 3 tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. The inmates aren't even the problem. It's being short staffed all the time cause people don't show up and/or quit. Not all, but in my experience Co workers were some of the biggest back stabbing pricks you could imagine. Also, if you do everything by the book you will not make it. The book is normally written by someone who never was a Corrections Officer to begin with.

19 bud. Well it was for Florida. Look at going to the military. You get Benefits that you can use your whole life. Like free healthcare. I promise you military was a good choice and I hated it. But was glad to serve and now that I’m older enjoy the small victories in life.
