i want to upgrade from the xone 92 to a 96 because having just to plug a single usb cable and not having to deal with audio interfaces and mac os updates is great ! but when i have to play at a venue which don't have a xone 96 mixer i'm done ! and i don't want to travel with a mixer ..so finally should i keep the audio interface just for this case or better stick with the 92 ?
Good to have a backup for sure. But 96 should become more and more available when put on the rider. Just a matter of requesting it. You know how to work the 92 plus audio interface so keep that as a backup so you can easily switch if a venue doesn’t have a 96. You know this before you go out to play. And you can treat the 96 as the 92 by simply sticking it in the audio interface to test things :)
Thanks Dave for going into detail with the 96. I went ahead and ordered 96 and a pair of xone K2's . Representation of the product shows exactly how versatile this kit really is. Im just a bedroom dj that loves music. what fx unit do you recommend?
Cheers ! So many options to choose from. I'd look I to getting a proper reverb and a delay unit. I landed on the Source Audio Ventris because of its teeakability and great sound. A lot of people love the Strymon reverbs. Source audio also has a reverb + delay unit where you can combine a reverb and a delay at the same time. But there are many offerings really. So best to research a bit to see what you like and is within budget.
Nice video! Thanks for the great summary / explanation of the features. What microphone or setup are you using for your voiceover? I'm trying to use a microphone (Shure SM7B + Cloudlifter) but get no sound on either channel A or B. Am I missing something? Or are there no pre-amps on channel A and B in the 96.
Cheers Liam! The xone does have preamps but no phantom power which the cloudlifter needs to operate. Have you tried plugging the mic directly into the xone 96?
Hey Again! Yep you got it. With the cloudlifter taken out I get sound. The level very pretty low, but not zero like before. That had me pretty puzzled for a a while. Thanks again, Liam
@@Davemech you're and ambassador for Xone . Really? I think you know why you're not. I just wish I had both and not worry about it . sadness. true sadness. Oh well , im down for the 96.
Cheers! I use the sends out of 96 to two channels of db4. And then return the headphone cure via rec out from db4 to a channel on the 96 and the main out of db4 to another channel on the 96.
another great and strangely fortuitous review. Thanks. Which of the two mixers here would you use with an external midi device, like a drum machine incorporated into a dj set? Obviously I've seen you use the db4 with digitak . If you had to choose? The 96 sounds great in this review
Thanks Allister! Well, db4 doesn't have midi out (only via USB to slave a daw to the db4). I always adjust the clock manually on the db4. Having said that they are both so very different. Analog sound and summing with send returns to add your own fx, or a prestine sounding fully digital mixer with studio grade fx engines on each channel and loopers and super customizable routing. Both have their place. I chose db4 because I wanted to go laptopless and have all the fx and loopers on one mixer :)
@@Davemech Thanks a lot! Difficult choice, especially as I quite like the idea of external FX, for the sake variety I suppose. Difficult decision at the moment 'cause you can't try first but I think I'd be happy with either of these. Cheers!
Hi Dave. Your Xone videos are awesome! On the video, it seems that the sound quality of the Xone 96 is much better than that of the PX5 .. Do you think this is true or is the difference in the audio recording of the video itself?
Thanks! Haha no it's not the mixer. In the xone px5 review I used the elektron analog heat as a master insert to add some saturation to the signal as a way to showcase the master insert. Rather exegerated though so that's probably the difference that you are talking about. Both mixers sound great and I'm fairly certain it would be nei impossible to pick the 96 out of the two in a double blind test.
They are different beasts. Both have their strengths. Model 1.4 simply fitted perfect a particular setup I’m using in a new live project. I do really love the way you have control over sound in more detail and I’m a sucker for saturation and filters and model 1(.4) is amazing in that department. The reason I got rid of the xone96 is that eventually I realized that xone db4 was just a better fit for me. Even though it’s a completely different mixer. The biggest reason I got the 96 was because I thought then could stop bringing my own mixer and just put it on my rider. but this turned out to be not the case all the time unfortunately.
Thank you for replying in depth great advice I’m waiting for you to add more content to the digitakt 2 tutorial on your website then I’ll debut the course
i think after watching video I am going with DB4 just like the effects ...delay and reverb and others and don't want to have to buy pedals to get the fx with the 96...
Also, is there any possible way you can record a video that compares the sound of the 96 filters vs the DB4 filters - both the "eq section filters" and the main filters? Thank you!
Will see what I can do. I got the 96 because of a showcase I did on Dancefair for A&H. I sold it already. Sunday 14th of July a video will come online comparing the 96 and 92 though!
@@Davemech For what it's worth... a 92 vs DB4 filter video sounds good to me. I still have my 92, as well and remember the filters fondly. I have a (decidedly less slick) 96 x 92 comparison on my channel, too.

I actually use xone DB4 for my live sets. I had the xone 96 but ultimately sold it because the DB4 keeps my live rig a bit more compact because of its many options. The PX5 was a review unit I got as a lone from Allen & Heath and has been returned to them. Currently have a lone model 1 for review here so going to create a video of that as well :)
You can route any of the A,B, and 1-4 channels simultaneously to either filter if you want. (As I show in the video you have switches on each channel to choose which filter to send it to). Crush is part of the filter.
I have my studio monitors connected to the booth of the mixer. What outputs / inputs should I choose to get sound from the soundcard on my PC? I can't seem to get it to work. So far I only get sound from master 2 when running from channel B from the windows settings... :(
@@Davemech thanks. I have ordered finally XONE96 - it sounds great with my records - nicer than Pioneer DJM's that I had in the past. Now i'm trying for get some nice effects.
Yes xone 96 has audio interfaces with which you can send each individual channel and send returns or master (selectable by button). Check the manual for the specs of the audio interfaces and which channels they can send to your daw.
i know im late to the party, but what are your i/o's for using your DB4 as your effects unit? i have a DB2 and i'd hate for it to sit in the closet. ha!
Hey :) send (a or b) from 96 to an input on the db4/db2, make sure the fx on the channel are set to 100% wet. Then use one of the master outs (or rec out, or headphone even, whatever you want) on db4/2 and connect that to the return (a or b) of 96. Cheers!
I would like to know if this mixer allows you to multi-track post fader,eq and sends via usb..because i love using dj mixers for jamming with hardware in the studio and if it's possible to record the individual instruments with the eq, fader & send movements ,it can then be used later to build a track in the daw and of course process them individually. this would be the ultimate mixer !
It sends the analog inputs over usb. So pre EQ and fader. You can record the sends though 👍 send 1 has usb 9/10 dedicated to it. And usb 11/12 is either the mater out or send 2 (there’s a button that switches between the two) . cheers
@@Davemech so not really useful then.. i will keep the 92 and if needed i will record the instruments one by one..but they really need to build a xone which allows multi-tracking like the midas mixers did or something like elektron overbridge..should be possible !
Hi Nick, Currently not using the 96 anymore but when I had I didn’t no. You could use two laptops with different purposes for example but you’d still have to switch between usb1 and USB2 so no huge advantage.
@@Nick-kb6jdfor my current setup, yes. The way of mixing, connectivity through dsub, the overall sound, filters, circuit clipping distortion per channel, plus the small footprint all influenced the decision. It’s not better per se than any of the other mixers I used, but simply perfectly fits the purpose right now :)
Touch to say which is better. Best to make a list of what you need. Xone 96 has an audio interface (two in fact). So if you want to be flexible that’s nice. Model 1 is very different in its approach so if that is something you’re looking for then try it out somewhere if possible. There is no reason to connect a synth to the mic inputs. You can just connect to the return A or B channels with Jack cables or use Jack to rca cables to connect to channels 1-4. Hope this helps :)
Hoi Patrick, ik blijf db4 gebruiken. Als ik DJ was geweest, dan had ik denk ik wel de 96 gebruikt. Deze 96 kreeg ik voor een show case tijdens Dancefair. Inmiddels weer verkocht.
@@Davemech the only thing holding me back in switching to the 96 (currently on the db4) is the filtermode on the eq section of the db4, the only thing that comes close to that possibility is the model 1 ...
@@mindyourstep802 yeah that is a very handy feature. Especially because of the resonance. It's unique. That, and the input matrix and loopers.... Db4 is just such a complete and deep tweakable mixer. I love it :). I'd choose 96 if I were a DJ though. For live performances db4 is just king.
@@Davemech yeah, getting my hands on a model 1 , hopefully today, to test for a while ...very curious about that one also ... i really like the concept of the filters and use them to blend my track in on the db4, so should be a similar workflow on the model 1

Hi Dave, thanks for the detailed review. Are the internal soundcards any good? I am considering getting a 96, and I am wondering whether it would be able to replace my RME BabyFace Pro. I would then sell the RME and use the money for funding the 96 purchase. Of course I will probably buy the 96 first and then sell the BabyFace, so I will get a chance to compare, but it would be great to hear your thoughts. I am thinking of using the built-in soundcards of the 96 to record mixes from the 96 obviously, but also to play some media from my Mac through the Genelec monitors.
The soundcards are definitely high quality. I was amazed by the low latency. If your computer can take it, you can set the buffer to 8 samples and have ultra low latency (round trip 2ms or 2.5 or so from the top of my head). Sound quality is great as well as you can expect from Xone.
On this mixer you can't completely as it doesn't use isolators. But it's not a must imho. This implementation is a bit more musical. PX5 uses isolators
@@Davemech no problem mate, Your vid helped me out and was really well explained. Now I am even more in doubt to ditch my normal interface in my studio setup. Question: Should i use the "booth" output to control my main monitors in the studio? Then I have mono button just like I have now on my monitor controller + I can control eq to my liking. Does it have a downside that I use booth output? Maybe I could replace the booth button with a tiny bigger knob to have more control over the volume.
@@benvanmassenhove no real downside other than that it's unbalanced, but that's not really a big deal. Personally wouldn't eq more with the booth controls for that in case you produce your own tracks because it will just add changes to the sound of your monitors after all the mixing and mastering in a project. If you know what I mean. Anyway, I use the booth out on my db4 as well, it's fine :)
@@Davemech you sure booth out is unbalanced? User guide says otherwise (happy me). EQ: Sometimes when I jam at the late evening / night I like to turn down some bass frequencies for my GF, neighbours... Thats why an eq in the master is always handy. Obviously not while mixing my productions.
It's my own track. Still unreleased :). I don't use traktor since I only perform live with hardware. I mentioned traktor, because this mixer is a good combination with it.
Nope. That’s not possible in windows. Only one ASIO soundcard can be active at any time. Also, xone doesn’t have 12 stereo channels/sends so it wouldn’t get you anything extra really :)
@@Davemech but if you connect two computers then you can have traktor playing on first computer on 1st soundcard and ableton playing on second computer on 2nd soundcard?
@@Judasz696 Yeap that is possible. This is why you have input options usb 1 and usb 2 per channel. If you’re on Mac it’s quite easy to run both ableton and traktor on 1 laptop with LINK.
Because the filters are not part of the channel. You can route channels through the filters. This has to do with the fact that they are analog filters and you have two of them. Not 1 for each channel.
@@Davemech ok. I'm just looking at the common use of applying filters for layering and transition and wanting to preview how it sounds before bringing in the track. I'm confused because I don't typically use effects return and send only on ableton and it's all digital and intuitive for me lol.
@@lifetakesflight ah sorry I misread your last question. The filters are “master” filters. They output their signal to the master out basically. So when you route channels through the mixer you won’t be able to cue the post filter signal unless you cue the master out. They’re really meant for on the fly use and are very good and flexible. Send return you can use in combination with Ableton if you want. Xone96 has 2 audio interfaces and you can set it up that you have one or two sends going to Ableton through an fx chain and then back into the mixer. And you can then route those fx Chanel’s through the filters for example :). Hope that helps. Cheers
Glad you like it :). It's my own work from my live set and unreleased yet. Keep an eye on my channel, fa ebook and/or Instagram as I do want to get that one released this year if possible.
It’s you ;) hehe kidding. It’s how a filter logically works. It depends which filter you select how the frequency knob responds. If it is set to low pass, frequencies above the cut off frequency are rolled off. So it filters by turning it counter clock wise. When set to high pass, frequencies above the cut off frequency are rolled off. So filters by turning it clock wise.
@@Davemech thanks for sharing additional explanation, my primary gripe here is the illustration for the 'mild to wild' flow doesn't illustrate that this would be the case. hence my aversion to the inversion. oh well, ;)

i want to upgrade from the xone 92 to a 96 because having just to plug a single usb cable and not having to deal with audio interfaces and mac os updates is great ! but when i have to play at a venue which don't have a xone 96 mixer i'm done ! and i don't want to travel with a mixer ..so finally should i keep the audio interface just for this case or better stick with the 92 ?
Good to have a backup for sure. But 96 should become more and more available when put on the rider. Just a matter of requesting it. You know how to work the 92 plus audio interface so keep that as a backup so you can easily switch if a venue doesn’t have a 96. You know this before you go out to play. And you can treat the 96 as the 92 by simply sticking it in the audio interface to test things :)
I love my mixer so much!
Wow!!!! Incredible mixer!!!!!
It really is :)
3:22. I love those eq's. I wish this mixer had a built in Midi track select & load to save me needing a Traktor X1 too
Thanks Dave for going into detail with the 96.
Looking forward to this 😎
I recon using it in no input technique might be dope.
I'd love to see a comparison video with the DB4, sound quality, connectivity, etc.
I'll see if I can get my hands on a 96 someday again

Your thoughts on that?
Great review, I have a PX5 and just bought a 96, how are you routing to get the effect from the DB4?
Cheers!
I use the sends out of 96 to two channels of db4. And then return the headphone cure via rec out from db4 to a channel on the 96 and the main out of db4 to another channel on the 96.
Is the 96 better than the px5 in soundquality? Would love to know ! :)
another great and strangely fortuitous review.
@@Davemech Thanks for the answer. I was thinking about buying the Xone 96, but I watched your XP5 video and its built-in effects processor is amazing.
I know this video is old but does this still beat your new model 1.4 ? If so what happened to your one

Leaning toward the 96 and xdj 700's, would appreciate some opinions thank you!
I'd get the 96. It gives you more future proof options to maybe add traktor for instance. Sound wise it's as better because if the improved eq.

Nope. Fully analog signal path (though it does feature 2 audio interfaces) . It has send returns to connect your own fx to.
Hi Dave , I have this question that I can't find any answer to. can you multitrack record with the 96 like the way you can with the DB4?
Yes xone 96 has audio interfaces with which you can send each individual channel and send returns or master (selectable by button). Check the manual for the specs of the audio interfaces and which channels they can send to your daw.

Hey :) send (a or b) from 96 to an input on the db4/db2, make sure the fx on the channel are set to 100% wet. Then use one of the master outs (or rec out, or headphone even, whatever you want) on db4/2 and connect that to the return (a or b) of 96.
Cheers!
Dave Mech big thanks! Off to buy some cables. Ha!

Currently not using the 96 anymore but when I had I didn’t no. You could use two laptops with different purposes for example but you’d still have to switch between usb1 and USB2 so no huge advantage.
@@Davemech What you using now?
@@Nick-kb6jdmodel 1.4. The rest of the setup has completely changed as well
@@Davemech Interesting... You prefer that one? Why?
@@Nick-kb6jdfor my current setup, yes. The way of mixing, connectivity through dsub, the overall sound, filters, circuit clipping distortion per channel, plus the small footprint all influenced the decision. It’s not better per se than any of the other mixers I used, but simply perfectly fits the purpose right now :)
This or model 1? Can I use microphone input on xone 96 to use with synthesizer?
Touch to say which is better. Best to make a list of what you need. Xone 96 has an audio interface (two in fact). So if you want to be flexible that’s nice. Model 1 is very different in its approach so if that is something you’re looking for then try it
out somewhere if possible.
There is no reason to connect a synth to the mic inputs. You can just connect to the return A or B channels with Jack cables or use Jack to rca cables to connect to channels 1-4.
Hope this helps :)
Zou je de 96 nu eerder voor je live setup gebruiken en waarom? Er zit ook 'n midi aansluiting op de 96, gebruik jij die niet voor de digitakt?

Really great vid! But your hand movements makes me nervous ;). Maybe I will lose my Motu AI and buy this mixer instead.

Does it have a downside that I use booth output? Maybe I could replace the booth button with a tiny bigger knob to have more control over the volume.
@@benvanmassenhove no real downside other than that it's unbalanced, but that's not really a big deal. If you’re on Mac it’s quite easy to run both ableton and traktor on 1 laptop with LINK.
How is it not having the option to hear the post channel filter in the cue?
Because the filters are not part of the channel. You can route channels through the filters. This has to do with the fact that they are analog filters and you have two of them. Not 1 for each channel.
@@Davemech can I hear filter effects in my headphones for cueing?
@@lifetakesflight if you use send fx you will be returning signals coming from the fx on channels and those channels you can cue. So, yes :)
Xone96 has 2 audio interfaces and you can set it up that you have one or two sends going to Ableton through an fx chain and then back into the mixer. is it just me or does the freq knob seem counterintuitive being inverted?
It’s you ;) hehe kidding. It’s how a filter logically works. It depends which filter you select how the frequency knob responds. If it is set to low pass, frequencies above the cut off frequency are rolled off. So it filters by turning it counter clock wise. When set to high pass, frequencies above the cut off frequency are rolled off. So filters by turning it clock wise.
