I had an uncle who was one of the Chosin Few. I had known since spending a summer with them at Ft Leonard Wood in 1965 that he was plagued with nightmares and periods of flashbacks, what we now call PTSD. A few years ago, just before he passed away, he asked me to go with him to the VFW. Over a couple of beers, he began telling me about the real horrors of that battle. Even though by then I was retired military myself, this was something he had never shared with anyone else, but knowing he hadn't long to live, it seemed he had to unburden himself. Most terribly was that he had, like Billy French, run out of ammo and came face to face with a Chinese troop who was also out of ammo. They wound up in hand-to-hand combat. He survived by strangling the Chinese soldier, squeezing the man's throat, holding the death grip while the man thrashed with all his own might, and watched the life extinguished from the man's eyes. He told me it seemed that took an eternity. He had never told anyone else about that fight.
Most of you people here are missing the deep symbolism behind it. The reason why the video paints the Chinese as horrible monsters, striking from the darkness, is because it's told from the point of view of a probably nineteen year old kid, young and fresh, who has no idea what's going on. He's been told that these men are monsters, and he's being attacked by them, in the dead of night. They're killing his friends, and he knows he needs to kill these monsters himself. Until, that is, he comes face to face with one. The scene at 2:12 is powerful, because at that point, the young kid is seeing someone probably just as young as he is, and probably wants to be there just as much as he does, which is to say, not at all. Both have been told that the other side are monsters, and both see each other as such until they come face to face in the glow of an explosion. It's when they realize that the opponents aren't monsters, they're humans too.

The reason the Chinese are portrayed as inhuman monsters in this video should be obvious. The video is from the perspective of P.F.C. Billy French, a young Marine trapped in a ferocious battle. In his mind, the Chinese are viewed as evil, nameless monsters who want to kill him and his friends, so they are portrayed as such in the video. It's also why when he comes toe-to-toe with a Chinese Soldier in the middle of the video, they are both suddenly illuminated and he views this particular soldier not as a ferocious adversary, but as another young man just as scared as he was. Everyone needs to stop jumping to conclusions. This is not American Propaganda, it's a video showing one perspective of the war, one of a scared P.F.C. who just wants to survive.

Trevor Anderson in 2:09 you can See there are no communists or Yankees. Just scared humans If you are a soldier you will always fight for the right thing maybe you're on the wrong side but you will think you're on the right side. But in this moment there is no right or wrong side, only two humans , scarred nobody wants to kill ,nobody wants to die. At this moment the cover of the brutal enemies breaks and the young American can see that this isn't a monster it's a human. Sorry for bad English I just wanted to share my thoughts
Well, yes, you are right there are better sides than others but yetIf something is better it doesn´t means that it´s good between bad and worse bad is better, but it is still bad You got the sense of my comment by using "In War, Every side has it monsters" but i´d rather say that, war itself is the monster.
As one American commander said when asked if the marines were retreating at Chosin "Retreating? No, we're just attacking in a different direction." It's amazing how they were able to escape completely surrounded and outnumbered close to 10-1.
I dont really approve of any damn war that US fought side of the one for independence and the civil war. cos those two were necessary. how ever, some vietnam war for example. pointless as shit.
Laughing Tree because no country in Europe rode on the backs of others to reach their power on the world stage. Video just shows the mindset of war. Viewing the enemy as a monster who wants to kill you... And a brief moment of humanity as some men see in war. It's an impressive visual.
+Dave ฆ้องวงศ์ Yeah, they were all just kids, really, who were told that the other side is evil and expected to murder each other in cold blood based on that assumption. While communism didn't do North Korea any good, it wasn't the individual soldiers' fault.

War is one hell of a thing. Those who fought honorably deserve respect, both sides. It would be a foolish mistake to ever diminish the value of the other person trying to take your life, vice versa.
Everyone in the comments are getting all political and having a shit fest, but that animation style tho... Oh come on it looks great, can we all at least appreciate that in an artsy fartsy capacity?
kitty cat That’s what happens when people try to shove their politics in everything they see. And I’m pretty sure by now you know it’s horrendous when it happens. Politics brings the absolute worst out of people and is fueled by nothing but hate, and it’s sad to see a beautiful, amazing animation like this with a message all about everyone being human just seen as an excuse for dumbasses in the comment section to dehumanize each other more. Trying to put politics in non political things is like smearing shit on a rose.
@@pvt.jamesramirez6249 thanks buddy for explaining. Love to see people who don't really want to involve with the politics (not me rip, my friend kinda force me to be).

As a recently graduated US Marine, this video really got to me, what those Marines went through. And at 2:13 or something, a statement by my senior drill instructor during the Crucible came into mind that we should think about how our enemies (individual soldier) aren't always monsters.
During my Crucible in December 2015, it was 34 Degrees with a Wind Chill. We were shivering non stop. My Drill Instructor said "If you think you're cold, imagine what it was for Marines in Korea. This is a Tropical Paradise compared to what they went through."
Beautifully done. The animation, the art style, the vilification of the enemy that puts you in the soldiers boots. All the soldier sees is his comrades by his side, and the enemies in front of him. It’s not until he gets close to one that he realizes they are just another person.

At first i wondered why the enemy army looked like an army of necromancer zombies. Then they showed that moment of humanity which i thought was both poetic and appropriate. It is often easy to forget during a war that the other side are humans too. This was a good short.
Most of the US Marines who fought at Chosin were recalled WWII vets. They all still wore the herringbone twill utilities and canvas leggings. This caused the North Koreans to call them "Yellow Legs". They feared the yellow legs and would tell fellow soldiers to avoid them.
In the Battle of Chosin Lake, three armies of the 9th Corps of the Chinese People's Volunteers engaged in a direct battle with the 10th Army of the United States Army, which had world-class weapons and equipment and distinguished battle achievements, in Chosin Lake area of Korea from November 27 to December 24, 1950, under the conditions of more than minus 20 degrees Celsius, frostbite and insufficient troops. It created the record of wiping out an entire regiment of American troops in the War against the United States and forcing the American ace force to experience the "longest retreat" in history. This battle recaptured the vast eastern area north of the 38th parallel. The simultaneous victory of the volunteers on both the eastern and western fronts changed the battlefield situation in one fell fell, becoming the turning point of the Korean War and laying the foundation for the victory of the armistice negotiations that eventually came.
We will always protect our South Korean allies. One day we will push north together and unify your country and free the innocent people of North Korea from evil.

My granpa was 18 years old when the Korean war broke out. He ran away from home in North Korea to avoid getting recruited, but he was captured by the South Korean army and became a combat engineer. He said the images of bodies burnt by a flamethrower still haunts him. Poor old man passed away 4 years ago.
My grandfather who died in February 2017 volunteered for the front lines in Korea. He served two tours of duty from 1950-51. He was in combat, he got malaria, and a grenade blew up next to him and sent shrapnel into his chest, luckily it missed his heart. He lived a wonderful life and was a brave, tough old man. RIP Jesse Alberto Murga 24th infantry division, U.S. Army 1925-2017
I used to live up in Korea at yongsan. They had a museum off post dedicated to those lost in the conflict. When I heard about my grandpa serving in the Korean War I thought he was one luck bastard. He would later die of a heart attack.
My grandfather didn’t like to speak about the war. The only mention of his experience in Korea came from when he was hunting during winter in Utah with my dad. They were walking high in the mountains, treading through snow when my grandpa stopped and looked around. He told my dad, “This looks exactly like the Chosin Reservoir.” My father knew better than to ask any questions about it and they just continued walking.
My friend's grandfather was a Chinese volunteer in the battle of Chosin Reservoir. He joined the battle as a reinforcement. When he returned to China, he became conscious, liked drinking, was afraid of the sound of firecrackers, and later died of mental illness and alcoholism at home
War is hell half the time you won’t have a damn clue what’s going on or what your shooting at but that one scene where they both stare at each other scared for there own life it shows that no matter who is looking down those sights or who’s looking that barrel we’re all human in the end we bleed, cry, laugh just like everyone else
2:09 damn this hit hard, movies games and books depict the enemy always as monsters, killers, rapists, devils. But they are still human, some enemy soldiers are not bad, they either got drafted or wanted to defend there country. War is nothing but a slaughter fest, satan sits back and watches as humanity tears each other apart limb by limb. Not all enemy soldiers are bad, it’s sad some people don’t recognize this
i reckon most soldiers on both sides were fighting for good reasons, especially since china and usa had fairly sound justifications for fighting against each other
My grandfather was in the ROKN when he was 17, and he mainly did communications onboard his minesweeper. Honestly some of his stories of war is so terrifying like when a MiG apparently circled around for a run against his ship. He also told me about the time he jumped into the water to save this Dutch soldier who was drowning since he couldn’t swim, and had trouble climbing onboard.
That part where the soldier sees his enemy's face and it appears to make him "human" is pretty darn powerful. If you see your enemy as a person before foe, that doesnt always make you a bad soldier
They're still fighting to this day. The war was never officially over, it's just the longest ceasefire in human history, 60+ years. Another fact, even after the ceasefire both sides would pop off rounds at each side, ending up with casualties on both sides.
sida liu thats not going to happen. The United States is China's best customer and they only joined in the Korean War because they feared that the US would push their advance into China.
I hope it comes to that, because north korea deserves to be obliterated. if for nothing else than for the people who live there in constant fear and slavery.
No one fights for a cause they think is evil. Hell, some fight for causes separate from their government. Many often fight to protect and feed their families. This is why I will always respect a soldier, regardless of which nation they fight for.
The Last Communist Well said. The day that communists rise up and attempt to steal my property I’ll keep that in mind; they’re not evil, they’re just very misguided. Either way those blokes are goners.

I get the symbolism, and there is a lot of truth to message. My uncle was in the 32nd Army infantry .. he died there .. I don't know the details other than KIA by hostile. I have always had a great respect and admiration for all military .. My uncle was 19 and eager to follow in the footsteps of his big brother (my dad). I was gung ho to be a Marine in my teens .. it's all I dreamed of .. a bad knee left me unfit. Watching and hearing of the experiences endured at the Chosin, as well as other battles has completely wiped all the naivety from my mind .. the romance of it all has been stripped away .. War is an ugly, terrifying living hell .. For everyone involved .. but still a necessary one.
I had an uncle who served in Army field Artillery who’d died in this battle at only 20yo. I have pics of his Purple Heart and Korean War service medal. His older brother, my granddad, served in the Marines in WWII.
No they were shocked because both to see they were human. This was metaphor for how war changes are perspective on what the enemy is. We were told that the enemy is a monster when in reality they are human. This is what the film was trying to tell us.

If you are a soldier you will always fight for the right thing maybe you're on the wrong side but you will think you're on the right side.
But in this moment there is no right or wrong side, only two humans , scarred nobody wants to kill ,nobody wants to die. At this moment the cover of the brutal enemies breaks and the young American can see that this isn't a monster it's a human.

Laughing Tree because no country in Europe rode on the backs of others to reach their power on the world stage.

My respect to all soldiers American or Chinese that fought bravely for their country.
+Dave ฆ้องวงศ์ Yeah, they were all just kids, really, who were told that the other side is evil and expected to murder each other in cold blood based on that assumption. While communism didn't do North Korea any good, it wasn't the individual soldiers' fault.
+Vader Some of them killed, raped innocent people of Korea. And they didn't even go to stranger's land for their patriotism. I've heard a lot from Korean elders who was in that hell.... Of course there were patriotic or benevolent persons in the army! ...A few
I agree, both sides should be respected due to their own sinscere cause.
War is one hell of a thing. Those who fought honorably deserve respect, both sides. It would be a foolish mistake to ever diminish the value of the other person trying to take your life, vice versa.

Most of the US Marines who fought at Chosin were recalled WWII vets. They all still wore the herringbone twill utilities and canvas leggings. This caused the North Koreans to call them "Yellow Legs". They feared the yellow legs and would tell fellow soldiers to avoid them.
Imagine fighting at the battle of the bulge and then fighting at the chosin
