I agree, horror has always been the most consistent genre financially. Every single year there will always be horror movies made on minimal budgets that make a helluva lot of money. I'd say this year has been solid for horror, but not an all-timer type of year. Great episode fellas.
Terrifiers story deserves more credit imo. Its a solid good vs. evil fantasy story with some purposefully heavy handed imagery that i enjoy. Plus 3 has one of the best ptsd portrayals in any slasher imo. Not a masterclass in storytelling for sure but i enioy it. Not for everyone
Looking forward to Ryan Coogler dipping a toe in the horror space next yr with Sinners. The Terrifier type movies are really not my bag but can only imagine that the franchise having grossed $80m so far on a $2.5m budget that they're going to be more of them?!
The writer/director, Damien Leone claims that he only plans to make one or two more after this, but we'll see if he actually sticks to that plan if they keep making this kind of money.
I'm kinda curious if Mike Flanagan is still working on his Steven King Dark Tower adaptation. He holds the rights I believe. He's said it's a very faithful to the source project with depth, but I can't imagine it being very good these days. In my opinion the main issue with most of the contemporary King movies is that they are so mainstream and a slave to the broad appeal that any strangeness, subversive, transgressive or challenging potential that they would need to be a surprisingly great success or at least interesting is just not something that gets done in that space anymore.
As a life long horror fan who watches most all releases. This has been a stand out year for horror to me. Exhuma/ late night with the devil/ substance/ first omen/ terrifier 3/ immaculate/ oddity/ in a violent nature
EXACTLY! I take first Terrifer as a great stand alone. Agreed on the emotion on the second one. But, you DO have to love Art and Thomas Howard Thortan, right?
We're crossing streams... My favorite movie reviewers just commented on Shelby Oakes.- Stuckmann's project that I backed on Kickstarter. Glad to see some love for this.
I'm not a horror fan, so I was mostly out on this episode. I am so glad I stuck it out for the Friday Night Lights content, though, lol. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose.
Smile 2 could have been great. The weight suicide was great, the people slowly crawling through the apartment was great, it gave me goosebumps. The jump scares were really cheap. If a movie is quiet and then really loud, of course I willl be scares. Not by the horror but by how loud it suddenly is, it's cheap.
GHOSTWATCH was also aired on Halloween, one time and one time only on BBC with pretty much no mention of it being a film. It freaked a lot of people out.
"only for the sickos" Sean, you All Elite? no matter what your tastes are with these Terrifier films-for or against-you can't deny how much this franchise using the Indie spirit has done amazingly well. It may be at the extreme, but, it is something Damien pushed and its obviously done well to the point that Art is a top seller at Spencers
great talk!😉👍👏 the terrifier franchise is soo good and inspiring bc its budget v. profits, how much damien is loyal to his creation, and how hes basically kept the lore of the character intact, and..how u hear of all the good and normal things happening behind the scenes. not one story of ppl out of control or treated badly, etc...every person so far has come out of this franchise whole..🙂🙏🤞✌👍🤘
If you're going to revisit It Ends With Us you should bring on Variety's Owen Gleiberman to balance out the panel. He's one of the few critics who shared my enthusiasm for it. Also, I Saw The Tv Glow nowhere on these lists? How
So sick hearing all the love for Late Night with the Devil! Got to see it at CIFF last year, and shudder has some great films lined up for next year too. Look out for The Rule of Jenny Pen!
17:00 CHRIS NOLAN BLUE THUNDER REMAKE ALL THE WAY. Unironically a fucking kickass movie that doesn’t get enough credit and has a lot of great themes/ideas that would work perfectly nowadays with militarised urban pacification programs still being relevant, I hope to god this is the project, can’t imagine how Nolan would step up the pretty spectacular helicopter action in the original, or who will take up the Roy Scheider and Malcolm McDowell roles
Strongly disagree about Romulus. As a horror movie I almost fell asleep it was so boring, yet the connective tissue with specifically Prometheus was the highlight of the film. I want more David and would love a melding of the two.
I don’t allow my intelligent but 12 year old daughter to watch the Terrifier films in full, as we ensure she covers her eyes during the more gruesome/explicit parts. However, she’s a fan of these films, she is mature enough to understand the comedic lunacy of it all, and she will be dressing up as the female version of Art The Clown for Halloween. In fact, these films have a brand following with fans and Art The Clown is now a popular Halloween costume for adults and older kids. Large retail stores like Spirit and Spencer’s also advertise Art The Clown.
It has several awesome scenes but I found Terrifier 3 a pretty hallow experience. A disappointment after the far more fun and engaging 2. Leone really needs help in the writing and pacing department. I will say however that this one looks great. You can see the increased budget on screen.
Talk about Terrifier for 20 min and not one mention of how effective and culturally significant the character of Art is, he is the new horror icon in the vein of Freddy Kruger or Michael Myers and he carries these movies single handedly. They don't even mention the actor who plays Art's name, David Howard Thornton. If you're gonna talk about it, talk about it.
I think it's been a pretty disappointing year in terms of theatrical horror. I saw both Longlegs and The Substance in the theater and thought both were shit. Maxxine was OK at best but that's more of a thriller. Speak No Evil was pretty strong but, again, more of a thriller. And I don't know what I'd call Trap, other than - of course - that it's shit. Admittedly I have not seen Strange Darling and Oddity yet, but they're on the list. What I'm puzzled by is why is no-one mentioning Never Let Go? I honestly think that's the best theatrical horror released this year. It's not mind blowing and there's some issues I had with it near the end, but it's easily the best written theatrical horror I've seen this year. And by some distance - not even close. Alexandre Aja directed, and great Halle Berry performance. Should have gotten more attention.
Bedroom kill in 2 is definitely king. I agree that adding more lore is not very interesting. I don't give a shit about Sienna or her amateur actor friends and family.
i think adaptations of King's novels under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman, would be sick. That one, Rage, about a kid holding his class hostage would be interesting.
I’m honestly upset that the terrifier series is making this kind of money, and I’m annoyed at critics for pretending there’s anything of substance. Morality should play some part in our storytelling as a culture.

1: The Substance
2: Late Night with the Devil
3: Abigail

Didn't like Terrifier 2 or Smile 1, so I skipped the new ones.
But still surprised how much I liked The First Omen!
It was good, but nothing beats 1st Omen.
try Oddity
