They didn’t talk about the music at all, which to me is a crucial part of the success and lasting impact of the first film - and a clear failing of the new one, which I did enjoy greatly. But it just doesn’t have that stirring, emotional magic of the original, which was largely provided by Hans Zimmer’s thunder and Lisa Gerrard’s voice. That voice is practically a main character in the first film, acting as Maximus’ wife from beyond the grave. It undeniably elevates the movie. That wall-to-wall, all-encompassing style of music certainly hasn’t been in Ridley’s playbook lately, and this movie perhaps didn’t call for it, but what we got from Harry Gregson-Williams is underwhelming and anonymous.
blade runner 2049 not even getting a mention during the legacy sequel discussion?? yall must be tired. best performance any director has gotten out of Harrison Ford in 20+ years.
The continued unmentions of Blade Runner 2049 by the Ringer and this podcast is horrendous. Egregious in this context. Absolutely one of the best legacy sequels
SPOILER - Maybe it’s just me, but I always felt it was heavily hinted at in the first film that Lucius was Maximus’ son and that Maximus probably knew or at least suspected it to be true. Obviously it’s never overtly stated, but I didn’t even see it as a reveal here because I thought it was already implied!
Regarding no above the line Oscar nominations for Blade Runner: you have to remember that Blade Runner was kind of a flop when it was originally released. It's only through the years and revised versions that it has come to be known as a masterpiece.
Maybe my all time favorite double fister. Newman is legendary and it's by far Cruises best performance. Add in Werewolves of London and it transcends masteepiece.
The Spartacus TV show is the true successor to the original movie. Delving into the world of the gladiators is the best angle to take and a tv show makes more sense for that than a movie.
I liked it, but it's another Ridley movie that would benefit from an extended cut. Many scenes felt like they needed an extra 30 seconds to breathe. Zimmer was missed. And why they'd they do Gracchus and Lucilla like that? Also rushed.
Denzel commands the screen like very few actors can. If he wins best supporting I wouldn't be mad. I had a big smile on my face every time he was on screen, running circles around everyone. absurd aura.
I think the major issue with the film is that it expects you to care about Lucius without giving you anything to believe in or rail against. 20 minutes into the first film, you despise Commodus with an unmatched fury. He is truly despicable. Originally here, you think the antagonist might be Pedro Pescal but his character is meaningless. Then you’ve got two simpleton emperors with zero character development that you feel sympathy for more than hatred. Mescal isn’t bad by any stretch but doesn’t have the believability that Crowe had in the role. Denzel is Frank Lucas in Rome.
The 2nd Half of this movie is pretty Great! That doesn't make this film a total success and stuff like that But no one can deny the 2nd half of this movie being good.
Didnt realize how tough legacy sequels would be to rank. For sheer audacity coming back over two decades to Bates and Psycho shows so much balls its praiseworthy on own also resisting while some execs always reminding that they were still in the early 80s slasher boom but nope Franklin a Hitch disciple, had it in his mind while also upping the gore but it fit within. Psycho IIrare it gets better as ot ages. The Color of Money it's rare to be able to answer decades later what happened to fast Eddie, I thought the Two Jakes would work same way but it did not. What Halloween 2018 did for me is remove all the garbage with few exceptions from my favorite movie 78 completely eradicating rob z. from my brain. Loved how Flanagan weaved Kubricks imagery and parts of story into Kings book I was skeptical but it worked. Last was even more skeptical w trailer for Rocky Balboa but it's now my second favorite. Have to say top gun maverick does nothing for me I was born in 79 and don't have an ounce of nostalgia I can't figure out the love for it but I'm not gonna list all the reasons
So all the legacy sequel talk and film snob Sean missed the biggest one: the Antoine Doniel series. 400 Blows, Stolen Kisses, Bed and Board and Love on the Run. IMO way better than the Before series.
Napoleon is like a cliff notes version made by someone with only a surface level understanding of time and place making a propaganda film as an enemy but fails as that as well. An example of why biopics ,which often fail even in good faith, are at a low point in cinema. To turn one history's titans who was if anything such a contradictory figure into some lucky joke and a simp to Josephine which he was anything but. Those that cite the letters don't get that was the way at the height of european romanticism and as a history buff wow did he gloss over or ignore too much to list. And whether you personally think he was a military genius and revolutionized war, taking down ancient absolute monarchs who ruled for many hundreds of years his subordinates mostly loved him because he wasn't some remote king but one of them. No mention of his civil code and legal reforms still influential to this day. His huge impact on culture to the ire of all royalty who saw him rightly as existential threat. Ridley Scott maybe a secret monarchist? In his time celebrated by Goethe, Emerson, top generals and even Beethoven who dedicated one of his works to him but cooled when made himself emperor. It bothers me that kids who see just this and will take it as a genuine representation, to them I'd say you would be better of watching the PBS 2 pt. Doc n 1970s Waterloo from battle standpoint at least is far superior hell I might go so far in the Bill and Ted portrayal lol
the tiger in the original was so cool because it was a real actual tiger/puppet, the cgi baboons and sharks were some of the worst looking cgi animals ive ever seen. a tiger or lion or bull attacking someone makes sense, a rhino i am 99% sure would not be consistently charging and trying to kill people unprovoked. how they get sharks from the ocean into the arena too?
gladiator 2 is entertaining but truly not even close to the original. there was a huge amount of flashbacks and expository dialogue needed by the characters to tell the story. there were too many soap opera level reveals of characters stories and history
Another pretentious discussion of a really good movie with great acting, cool story, and entertaining set pieces. Take my advice, ignore the wet blankets at The Ringer who discuss entertainment, and go enjoy a fun, well-made movie. RIP to The Big Picture and The Watch for me. You died a long time ago, I just kept giving you more and more chances to come out of the pretentious contrarian gloom. But, no more. “Now, we are free..” 😉
Absolute garbage take. The film is a cash grab, pale photocopy, remix, rehash of a much superior film. It's utterly mediocre and a waste of all of the talent involved's time. They're right. You're wrong. Keep accepting mid output. AI could probably have created this version of a Gladiator sequel. And maybe did in part. It's depressingly just ok.
Amanda gotta go.. I've been going through old episodes and the amount of mainstream movies she hasn't seen and doesn't know about is kind of alarming considering she fancies herself some sort of film fan and this is a film podcast after all..
pedro pascal should have been the main character, revealing that paul mescal is the kid from the original both hurts the original and sequel. that kid was a little brat he never would have made it as a slave or gladiator he grew up as a prince
Let's face it, Ridley Scott has a dogshit track record when it comes to revisiting his earlier films. The Alien prequels...crap. Blade Runner 2049...crap. I mean, watching the first Blade Runner... that's it's own film. Watching Blade Runner 2049 is like sitting through one of the shittier episodes of the HBO Westworld series.
And Ridley the most overrated current director. He's a legend and it's cool he keeps getting to make insanely big films but how many legit good films has he made in the last 30 years? You could argue ZERO
Agreed. Average bland actor who most people don’t even know who he is. Ridley has lost it with his casting choices. He hired him after a 20 min zoom call.

blade runner 2049 not even getting a mention during the legacy sequel discussion?? yall must be tired. best performance any director has gotten out of Harrison Ford in 20+ years.
CR was such a nice surprise because he wasn’t in the thumbnail lol he’s been a UA-cam all-star for The Ringer since video format dropped
The continued unmentions of Blade Runner 2049 by the Ringer and this podcast is horrendous. Egregious in this context. Absolutely one of the best legacy sequels
If you remember they all groupthink hated Dune until they didn't, too.

Logan is NOT a legacy sequel. That spot should have been for Blade Runner 2049.
It’s weird I always thought Luscious was his kid but I do admit it was just headcanon that now is canon
COLOR OF MONEY = MASTERPIECE
Maybe my all time favorite double fister. Newman is legendary and it's by far Cruises best performance. Add in Werewolves of London and it transcends masteepiece.
"Masterpiece"? Not really, in my opinion, but it is better than some people would make it out to be. Haters should revisit it.
DOOM!
SPOILER
As someone who’s seen gladiator 15-20 times and always gotten a heavy impression that Lucius was Maximus’ son…… this podcast is confusing
I’ve seen it the same amount it’s honestly never even implied except for when maximus asks if Lucius is fine when he dies.
The Spartacus TV show is the true successor to the original movie. Delving into the world of the gladiators is the best angle to take and a tv show makes more sense for that than a movie.
Random thought: it will be a shame if the entire time Amanda is gone we don't fill the second chair with some Wesley Morris!

great points
I love CR, Sean, and the Rewachables, but their chemistry is freaking hilarious! They're great.
I wish Creed and Blade runner 2049 gotten honorable mentions when they talked about legacy sequels
The 2nd Half of this movie is pretty Great!
That doesn't make this film a total success and stuff like that
But no one can deny the 2nd half of this movie being good.
Donner used real baboons in The Omen in 1976 and its iconic two decades before CGI
Give us a Re-Basterds with Juliet!
Please don’t
Amanda is my favorite part of the show!
These nerd guests are over prepared like they’re there for a school project. Amanda brings personality and jokes. Amanda is best
Chris looks like he's prepared for this set to sink into the ocean at any moment.

This episode really becomes an HR nightmare at 1:46:47 when 'cranking it' is brought up
Anyone ever see Sean Evans (Hot Ones) and CR in the same room?
I would listen to these 3 talk about anything
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 as a fav legacyquel is a preposterous hipster take
Paused 6:01. Idk when I’ll be back, but I’ll be back
All CR needs is some arm floaties and he’s ready for baby’s big day at the beach!
2:19 just in case anyone was wondering, Mallory Rubin is indeed on this podcast.
She’s the worst
Of course Chris Ryan is a hardcore head. Listen to Straw Man Army, Chris!
Straw Man rules!
So all the legacy sequel talk and film snob Sean missed the biggest one: the Antoine Doniel series. 400 Blows, Stolen Kisses, Bed and Board and Love on the Run. IMO way better than the Before series.
Shout out to my Screen Unseen brethren who overrated the movie because we saw it slightly early and didn’t expect to.
Gladiator is top tier Ridley Scott.

True, that movie was embarrassing.
Saw gladiator 2 last night. Movie was not good at all, no reason for it to be made
Sean emboldened. DEI Texas Chainsaw haha
Denzel aside, yeah, nah
How does Logan qualify as a legacy sequel??????
Denzel Washington can't make up for the lack of Richard Harris and Oliver Reed's late stage alcoholism (the best parts of the first movie).
Best parts???? I mean I liked them. But best parts? Harris was done after 15 minutes and reed was sad
@@xxthekingfish SAD! Qu*er Giraff!
@@xxthekingfishHarris is so good he lingers
I imagine Paul mescals role played by Tom Hardy like his character in Warrior and I think this film would be 10x better
CR 😊

I was entertained. It's good pulpy fun. I might've even liked it more than original. The only thing bringing it down was all the horrid cgi
I like Amanda enough but the guests he's had on since her maternal leave are so much more insightful.
💯
Amanda gotta go.. I've been going through old episodes and the amount of mainstream movies she hasn't seen and doesn't know about is kind of alarming considering she fancies herself some sort of film fan and this is a film podcast after all..
@@BabyfaceThompson she actually thinks SHE is the best movie fan ever
She’s awful
Hard disagree. Sorry but the show has been popular for years because of her.
Great content! Thank you.
What is Chris wearing
Love you guys, can’t wait to get into this
Gladiator 2 was vomit on a screen. Nonsensical plotting, terrible CGI. Don't listen to critics nobody will watch this movie in 6 months.
Is CR a prepubescent 51 year old?
No Creed???
Vocal Fry
Fortunately, Amanda Dobbins is not on this episode of the Big Picture Podcast. 5/5 stars
Already out on the Nolan film cause of Holland, most overrated young actor working
Zendaya too, loathe them both more and more
pedro pascal should have been the main character, revealing that paul mescal is the kid from the original both hurts the original and sequel. that kid was a little brat he never would have made it as a slave or gladiator he grew up as a prince
The Last Jedi is wonderful? Is Mallory okay???
I never even liked the original

Trash movie that will be quickly forgotten.
The Last Jedi is bad and dumb.
Mallory is so desperate to pod with big picture people it’s very strange

The Last Jedi killed the franchise

No.
LOL no it wasn't, it was goofy and Michelle did not deserve the Oscar.
Pedro pascal is not a good actor. The casting in this movie is so bad. Ridley had his pick of any actor and choose him. Wtf.
