I know it's years later, but EDF 5, in addition to just having even MORE weapons and a longer campaign, also adds a ton of quality of life features that address things brought up in this video, like now being able to gain weapons and armor for classes other than the one you're currently playing, giving Air Raider a third weapon slot, and clearing a mission now retroactively counts as clearing it for all difficulties below the one played on.
@@vizard7548 Yep, the graphics, gameplay, quality of life, UI controls, and weapon configurations was a lot better. Actuall it was so good they maintained most of it and carry it over to EDF6. One of the difference was they transferred or returned? the stationary guns to the Ranger leaving the Air Raider with a drone army instead.
Bought this game the moment your review finished. (Technically I bought it in the middle and it had installed by the end but i digress) So far I have not lamented my purchase at all. Thanks for the recommendation. Love it!
One of my favorite things that I was allowed to do during the last few missions was build a sort of shelter out of a bunch of Balams, because the game allowed you to call them in on top of pre existing ones, meaning every time one of my giant robots got destroyed, another one immediately fell into place, creating an unbreakable wall of vehicles from which my friends and I took potshots. It was stupid and I adore that the game allowed it to happen
I'm genuinely surprised how good the arachnid and insect modelling and animation is in this game. I've seen plenty of triple-A titles that have less organic and convincing movement animations. The particle effects are almost hilariously bad, though. Which I suppose is kind of intentional.
Somewhere around mission 50 (!!!) they start throwing these dragons at you and the animations and attack patterns on them as they swoop in on you en masse is actually really good. This game is great at generating it's own setpieces without needing to overly script things. There's pitched battles against combined forces, there's desperate last stands as you run backwards from impossible odds firing into the swarm and hoping your magazine is going to outlast these giant red ants, there's the moment when things go literally 100% Pacific Rim on you as you mount up in the Walking Fortress Balam and fight Anguirus (I forget it's actual name) That said, if you have severe arachnaphobia, this is NOT the game for you. Or maybe it is?
thats one nice thing about EDF 4.1 and also EDF 5 (coming soon to PS4!) is that if you actually saw these insects and spiders in real life, youd realize the game is almost 1:1 in terms of accuracy to what they look like and how their bodies move i mean sure the jumping spiders dont jump like actual jumping spiders do, but if thye did, you wouldnt be able to fight them because theyd be lunging at you so quick youd die in seconds in such hordes of them but the jumping spiders from a visual perspective have a model thats almost exact to the real life species their modeled after
This is a long post intended to inform, and holds no real purpose. You dont have to read it if you dont care. This is a courtesy warning: I mean the "in real life" argument is a bit of conjecture however. Exoskeleton based creatures like various insects cannot support their own mass at such weights. Even projecting that somehow they develop a super-skeleton the massive amount of force required, the acceleration and deceleration of throwing such a massive object around with precision would have to be altered compared to its smaller version to keep the impact for from being strong enough to snap a similarly sized pillar of steel reinforced concrete. You're supposed to give a 3000lb car going at 60mph 200 yards to come to a stop. A 6,000lb spider being launched at 200mph and stopping on a dime would just end in a shower of gore and unintended collateral damage. A good example of this is seen in the water, where buoyancy creates a reality that is unable to be achieved on land. Despite being much more powerful and similarly aerodynamic, the darting/direction changing ability of small, medium, large and massive creatures is incredibly different, despite all having musculature that is proportionally strong for their sizes. Even with the reduced impact of being suspended in water, size, weight and impact are things that restrict most science fictions to always being fictions. That said it is a great game and I wouldnt want the concept changed for anything.
It's like a self-aware, ironic B-movie: not the highest quality in cinematography or technique, but utterly enjoyable. And it knows it and gives you what you want.
EDF 4.1 on PC and coop with your friend/friends on hard is a blast. It's actually can be pretty tactical and not just "stupid fun shooting" that some people think the game is. I would describe as "pure" EDF 5's RANGER HAS A BIKE. A BIKE! No PC port announcement yet tho (
The best moment I have with this game is toward the end, Commands will gradually talk about the legendary heroes who singlehandedly saved the humanity years ago and went AWOL making a comeback and fend off the invaders places to places. And they will little by little reveal that those heroes are on one of the storm teams (didn't specify which specific team) and I went "Is it me? Are they talking about me??" "I AM the legendary hero from the previous game!" So, then the final mission I felt the great triumphant without a single cutscene.

I got really into the game for a while; and that was only on ranger and wing diver, and only single player! This is one of the greatest games ever made. I have hundreds of hours in 2017 many hundreds more in 2025. Then 4.1 on PC has currently over 300 hours in it. I have bought 2025 and 4.1 for dozens of people who are all in shock at how much fun it is.

This video basically convinced me to buy this game and I'm super glad I did but there's a small problem I have with it. I found while playing in couch coop that weapons would only be gained for the person picking them up, which meant that my sister managed to get way more weapons in the beginning as the wing diver of the two of us until I realised and we started rationing them out. I mean I was still reliably killing shit because I was a ranger and I have a habit of sticking myself into a group of enemies and firing until I can see, but because of the preconception I had of the weapons being shared equally and stressing to her that she get boxes it put me at a disadvantage. Otherwise great video and I have no idea if this is a splitscreen only thing, in which I case I completely apologise.
yeah my and my brother played this for ps3 and the insect armagedon (the one with jet) for xbox 360 and we kept trying to hoard armor from each other (more so in the latter) also i liked using jet on top of buildings to snipe while my brother liked using the fencer and btw I felt like air raiders were a godsend to fencers (and maybe rangers) sometimes
Sapphire Blaze you unlock tjem as you level mainly its not purely based on what you pick up. it can help. but from my experience it counts for everyone. I might be wrong tho
Finally got around to watching this video. I have to agree that the 2 weapon limit was ass. In co-op we would often try out weird things and it was sometimes frustrating when you picked some grenade that only got you killed and then you had just one weapon to use on everything else. Other than that, this game was fucking fun. So many long nights with my friend. Just screaming and laughing like madmen. Some of the missions really have an impressive sense of grand battle. Like the ones in large, open and even fields where you have tons of tanks rolling towards an army of hectors. That was an amazing feeling. on harder difficulties those fights would really make my ass cheeks clench. Clunky and awkward as it might be, I had some of my most fun and memorable co-op experiences with this game.
that's a fault of the game itself. Ingame VC is fucked, even if I mute the game (i.e. the sound effects and bgm and the voice over) I couldn't hear the vc. there is no VC Volume slider/

EDF 5 and Iron Rain are now out on pc, however I'd recommend 5 more since Iron Rain tried to become too cinematic 5 adds a lot of quality of life and imo is just as if not more fun as 4.1, even if it is a bit pricey
27:49 "car wash for giant mechs" when I was in co op I was playing as air raider with the giant mech equipped, so the rest of the team was left to do the car wash, let's just say "godzilla" didn't stand a chance
25:55 in 2025 that drag was infinite so if you got caught someone HAD to save you or you'd just die, in 4.1 they changed it so there is a sort of timer on it to prevent you from getting permanently locked against buildings and dying unfairly, however as someone who mostly plays Fencer it's not fun to get hooked if your behind a building, but if your not... well the not so itsy bitsy spider is about to find out what it's like to get mauled by a metal bear packing a small armory.
I sure hope you got your hands on Inferno Gear. Just as you said - once you get your taste of it, you can't go back. Witnessing a Rule of God just is something... very, very special.
Luckily it does sound like some of these issues did get tweaked during the newest version. By what I hear, you get item drops for all classes at once, so no outpacing a class that way.
EDF 4.1 for PS4 is the remaster of EDF 2025 from PS3, also the voice actors are anime voice actors and theres Kaiju in the EDF series for any new player to the series!
edf will never be made with effort. if it did it wouldnt be edf. edf is ment to be a mess of a game with the minimum amount of polish for it to be playable. fucking love it.
Protip: the ranger can beat every mission with 2 Lysanders. lul (might not be a "fun" weapon but there is always a weapon combo that will "effectively" beat a mission)
These games are pure, unmitigated fun to play through with friends, especially on higher difficulties. The fact that Inferno is near impossible in these games makes it a challenge to use the wackiest weapons in creative ways to beat a swarm of bullet sponges capable of one shorting you by looking in your direction.
Iirc there was a segment of the simple series that would be called the simple 2000 series. Named so because they would be sold for 2000 yen, or around $20 US. The original game of this series was one of them tmk.

all the classes gain health at different rates, the only two that are the same are Ranger and Air Raider at round .40 per pickup, Fencer at .52 and Wing Diver at a very low .27

awesome video , i have played all the edf games to date on xbox 360 and pc , tend to play couch coop split screen with my 2 daughters , 8 and 12 , my 8 yr old daughter loves being a wing diver ) i have this enhanced pc version yet to install and play , will do soon looks fantastic , love the edf games , have had so much family and single player fun with them , hope edf 5 comes from the ps4 to pc soon )
Tanks are great, dude! The lvl 65 tank handles like a fucking Ferrari with a gun to destroy anything, and have you SEEN the Titan?? You fly back 30 feet just from the recoil, it's beautiful. Should also have briefly touched upon some of the air raiders other class synergy, like laser designator for fencers
I am so, so happy you reviewed this game. One of my middle-school friends and I played the crap out of the original game way-back-when, and recently my apartment roommate and I played through this one. I've already watched the video, but I would have said before it even started: This game is right up your alley. Unashamedly cheesy, over-the-top, and intense situations done with a straight face, it's the perfect love-letter for B-list monster movies done right. I could write an overly-long comment praising and deriding multiple facets of the game, but I'm satisfied with your video coverage, so I won't. I will say I'm sorry you weren't fond of my favorite class in the game, the WingDiver. I'm a huge fan of "laser" weapons, and being able to fly around while melting giant insects or getting up in the dragons' faces to rapid-fire-wide-laser shotgun them in their own aerial turf was immensely satisfying for me. Fencer was fun too.
To be fair about Helicopters, weapons get stronger and better the higher the difficulty and the higher the level of the weapon. With the highest difficulty awarding up to level 99 Weapons. The Helicopters feel sluggish early on, which makes me think they have been designed around the hardest difficulty, because the later models of Helicopter are incredibly quick, agile and responsive.
I don't know why this is the funniest thing I've watched in ages, jut the way he talks about how he has an unlimited amount of small arms fire to take on this fucking planet wide ceiling is hilarious.
Tehsnakerer Really good video, however one small thing i believe you missed. The fencers have a way to quickly dash again by using some guns. As in, if you shoot some weapons, your dash cool down turns off and you can dash again. some of these weapons are really fast shooting and can get you to near constant dashing
Kinda late to say this but if you did end up playing fencer more and unlocking the javelin launcher, you have unlocked the fastest class in the game. Using the Javelin Launcher to cancel your dashes, you can immediately do it again, making you faster over 1 dimension than even a Wing Diver. The Launcher itself does need to be reloaded every once in a while, but the ammo count is about 200 or so, so it shouldn't be a problem.
I kinda like EDF2: Invaders from Planet Space! more though. All the ridiculous stuff (like the shotgun grenade launcher that fired flubber-esque plasma bombs that ricocheted all around the map and could destroy a small town in one blast) was gated to the last two difficulty levels, you and you alone were the nameless unrivaled soldier that basically won the entire war yourself, the three vehicle types actually mattered... Also five different types of godzilla, including the mecha one.
Coming back here since yesterday had an Air raider that REFUSED to use artilerrly unless asked AND then once the mission was beaten they would go back to Double Limpets. LIMPETS!
I think your highly underestimated the tanks. I got one of them which zooms across the map and one shots almost anything. It’s extremely fun to do drive bys with a bloody tank
I remember a while after watching this and buying the game a while later I thought you had said you played it on inferno instead of hard, and so I played the first dozen missions on inferno, being hesitant to try a lower difficulty because well in my mind "Tehsnakerer played the whole thing on inferno start to finish".
11:07 This tells me you didn't have a Wing Diver using the aptly named "Monster." Just one well placed shot from that thing can drop those ships before they even have the chance to close up.
one nice thing coming in EDF 5 (soon out on PS4, December 11th but no word on a potential PC port) is they made losing a bit less harmful, now if youl ose, you still keep a modest percentage of the weapons and armor you picked up, but they also made the grind a bit less heavy, levels drop a tighter spread of weapons now AND you get weapons for all classes though at least 70% of them wil be for the class your currently playing , but it still gives you some weapons for the other classes they also changed the completion aspect, Easty/Normal/Hard now share completion medals, so if you beat it on Easy you get the one for Easy, but if you beat it on Hard you get the medal for all 3 difficulties now this does NOT apply to Hardest and Inferno, those still have to be earned seperatly, meaning beating a mission on Inferno ONLY gets you the Inferno medal, not Hardest or any others, but still that does streamline the medal progression alot just being able to condense Easy/Normal/Hard into 1 if you can beat a mission on Hard
4.1 is a re-release of a PSP port (EDF4) of the original EDF2. It's easily the best start to the series. The game is very grindy and you're not really intended to play each mission back to back all the way through Hard or Hardest difficulty, you'll need to grind a bit to get both your armor value and unlocked weapons up to par but it isn't so gated that you need to finish every mission on one difficulty before moving to the next.
Actually of EDF2025, a PS3 title. PSP had EDF2 but it was a direct port of the PS2 game and came out only in Japan, that was one FPS slideshow though, it had even more enemies then EDF2025 and EDF 4.1 have, like the little rolling beetjes that exploded and giant flying centipedes.
Something you might want to clarify, the way you word it it suggests you select difficulty at the beginning of the game and it can't be changed until you beat the game or start a new one, whereas you pick the difficulty at the beginning of each stage.
Tehsnakerer to be fair I was playing a game and missed that first bit of you showing it, but saw when you demonstrated it again on level 1, if I had paid more attention I probably wouldn't have been confused.
You still make a good point though, I do make these knowing (likely a majority) of people are just going to have them as background audio while doing something else, considering that's how I tend to take in longer videos as well.
You say wing diver is the most maneuverable, but an exploit using the Fencer dashing mechanic and shield bashing during that dash makes the fencer the most maneuverable, by a… rather large margin.
completed the game on wing-diver as a near-untouchable (low hp but fast in the air) area cleansing death from above and behind zeus-in-a-plate-mail-bathing-suit but struggled on early missions with fencer (slow as hell unless dash-cancelling, but the aiming is compromised due to negative mouse acceleration) and air raider (early vehicles got nuked instantly by ant acid, or couldn't shoot up effectively enough to kill the dropships without getting horribly murdered by ants), ranger was broadly functional but boring.
BTW I hated the rapier weapons, the disco ball of super random low damage death was nothing compared to the wonders of a ground skipping thunder bow (mid-range shotgun), plasma thrower or boring-but-effective sniper-beam laser-pointer.

This video basically convinced me to buy this game and I'm super glad I did but there's a small problem I have with it. I found while playing in couch coop that weapons would only be gained for the person picking them up, which meant that my sister managed to get way more weapons in the beginning as the wing diver of the two of us until I realised and we started rationing them out. I mean I was still reliably killing shit because I was a ranger and I have a habit of sticking myself into a group of enemies and firing until I can see, but because of the preconception I had of the weapons being shared equally and stressing to her that she get boxes it put me at a disadvantage.
Otherwise great video and I have no idea if this is a splitscreen only thing, in which I case I completely apologise.
Thats a couch co-op problem only, sorry that it happens to you though .-.
yeah my and my brother played this for ps3 and the insect armagedon (the one with jet) for xbox 360 and we kept trying to hoard armor from each other (more so in the latter)
also i liked using jet on top of buildings to snipe while my brother liked using the fencer and btw I felt like air raiders were a godsend to fencers (and maybe rangers) sometimes
Sapphire Blaze you unlock tjem as you level mainly its not purely based on what you pick up. it can help. but from my experience it counts for everyone. I might be wrong tho

Finally got around to watching this video. I have to agree that the 2 weapon limit was ass. In co-op we would often try out weird things and it was sometimes frustrating when you picked some grenade that only got you killed and then you had just one weapon to use on everything else.
Other than that, this game was fucking fun. So many long nights with my friend. Just screaming and laughing like madmen. Some of the missions really have an impressive sense of grand battle. Like the ones in large, open and even fields where you have tons of tanks rolling towards an army of hectors. That was an amazing feeling. on harder difficulties those fights would really make my ass cheeks clench.
Clunky and awkward as it might be, I had some of my most fun and memorable co-op experiences with this game.
It's hard to hear you sometimes when you have ingame voice chat on, maybe adjust the volume so your voice is more clear?
that's a fault of the game itself. Ingame VC is fucked, even if I mute the game (i.e. the sound effects and bgm and the voice over) I couldn't hear the vc. there is no VC Volume slider/

EDF 5 and Iron Rain are now out on pc, however I'd recommend 5 more since Iron Rain tried to become too cinematic
5 adds a lot of quality of life and imo is just as if not more fun as 4.1, even if it is a bit pricey

25:55 in 2025 that drag was infinite so if you got caught someone HAD to save you or you'd just die, in 4.1 they changed it so there is a sort of timer on it to prevent you from getting permanently locked against buildings and dying unfairly, however as someone who mostly plays Fencer it's not fun to get hooked if your behind a building, but if your not... well the not so itsy bitsy spider is about to find out what it's like to get mauled by a metal bear packing a small armory.
You sold me on this game. Never even heard of it. But holy hell, such glorious chaos!

Luckily it does sound like some of these issues did get tweaked during the newest version. By what I hear, you get item drops for all classes at once, so no outpacing a class that way.
EDF 4.1 for PS4 is the remaster of EDF 2025 from PS3, also the voice actors are anime voice actors and theres Kaiju in the EDF series for any new player to the series!

edf will never be made with effort. if it did it wouldnt be edf. edf is ment to be a mess of a game with the minimum amount of polish for it to be playable. fucking love it.

(might not be a "fun" weapon but there is always a weapon combo that will "effectively" beat a mission)

These games are pure, unmitigated fun to play through with friends, especially on higher difficulties. The fact that Inferno is near impossible in these games makes it a challenge to use the wackiest weapons in creative ways to beat a swarm of bullet sponges capable of one shorting you by looking in your direction.
Iirc there was a segment of the simple series that would be called the simple 2000 series. Named so because they would be sold for 2000 yen, or around $20 US. The original game of this series was one of them tmk.

awesome video , i have played all the edf games to date on xbox 360 and pc , tend to play couch coop split screen with my 2 daughters , 8 and 12 , my 8 yr old daughter loves being a wing diver ) i have this enhanced pc version yet to install and play , will do soon looks fantastic , love the edf games , have had so much family and single player fun with them , hope edf 5 comes from the ps4 to pc soon )

Tanks are great, dude! The lvl 65 tank handles like a fucking Ferrari with a gun to destroy anything, and have you SEEN the Titan?? You fly back 30 feet just from the recoil, it's beautiful.
Should also have briefly touched upon some of the air raiders other class synergy, like laser designator for fencers

I am so, so happy you reviewed this game. One of my middle-school friends and I played the crap out of the original game way-back-when, and recently my apartment roommate and I played through this one.
I've already watched the video, but I would have said before it even started: This game is right up your alley. Unashamedly cheesy, over-the-top, and intense situations done with a straight face, it's the perfect love-letter for B-list monster movies done right. I could write an overly-long comment praising and deriding multiple facets of the game, but I'm satisfied with your video coverage, so I won't.
I will say I'm sorry you weren't fond of my favorite class in the game, the WingDiver. I'm a huge fan of "laser" weapons, and being able to fly around while melting giant insects or getting up in the dragons' faces to rapid-fire-wide-laser shotgun them in their own aerial turf was immensely satisfying for me. Fencer was fun too.

To be fair about Helicopters, weapons get stronger and better the higher the difficulty and the higher the level of the weapon. With the highest difficulty awarding up to level 99 Weapons. The Helicopters feel sluggish early on, which makes me think they have been designed around the hardest difficulty, because the later models of Helicopter are incredibly quick, agile and responsive.
I don't know why this is the funniest thing I've watched in ages, jut the way he talks about how he has an unlimited amount of small arms fire to take on this fucking planet wide ceiling is hilarious.
The helicopters are amazing at the highest levels. You only tried the first ones.
The same goes for the scooter, it's horrible at first.
They gave me 2025 for free one month on my 360 and i love the shit outta that game

Tehsnakerer Really good video, however one small thing i believe you missed.
The fencers have a way to quickly dash again by using some guns. As in, if you shoot some weapons, your dash cool down turns off and you can dash again. some of these weapons are really fast shooting and can get you to near constant dashing
Spot on with guessing what the older story line was shit invades you win in a fit of glory and it got laggy it was amazing
Kinda late to say this but if you did end up playing fencer more and unlocking the javelin launcher, you have unlocked the fastest class in the game. Using the Javelin Launcher to cancel your dashes, you can immediately do it again, making you faster over 1 dimension than even a Wing Diver. The Launcher itself does need to be reloaded every once in a while, but the ammo count is about 200 or so, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Pairing that with a Blasthole Spear is my usual fast travel/attack combo setup.
I kinda like EDF2: Invaders from Planet Space! more though. All the ridiculous stuff (like the shotgun grenade launcher that fired flubber-esque plasma bombs that ricocheted all around the map and could destroy a small town in one blast) was gated to the last two difficulty levels, you and you alone were the nameless unrivaled soldier that basically won the entire war yourself, the three vehicle types actually mattered... Also five different types of godzilla, including the mecha one.

I think your highly underestimated the tanks. I got one of them which zooms across the map and one shots almost anything. It’s extremely fun to do drive bys with a bloody tank
I got one that has a rail cannon and side guns that other players can get in. I also don't think it had bullet drop.

I remember a while after watching this and buying the game a while later I thought you had said you played it on inferno instead of hard, and so I played the first dozen missions on inferno, being hesitant to try a lower difficulty because well in my mind "Tehsnakerer played the whole thing on inferno start to finish".
11:07 This tells me you didn't have a Wing Diver using the aptly named "Monster." Just one well placed shot from that thing can drop those ships before they even have the chance to close up.

one nice thing coming in EDF 5 (soon out on PS4, December 11th but no word on a potential PC port) is they made losing a bit less harmful, now if youl ose, you still keep a modest percentage of the weapons and armor you picked up, but they also made the grind a bit less heavy, levels drop a tighter spread of weapons now AND you get weapons for all classes though at least 70% of them wil be for the class your currently playing , but it still gives you some weapons for the other classes
they also changed the completion aspect, Easty/Normal/Hard now share completion medals, so if you beat it on Easy you get the one for Easy, but if you beat it on Hard you get the medal for all 3 difficulties now this does NOT apply to Hardest and Inferno, those still have to be earned seperatly, meaning beating a mission on Inferno ONLY gets you the Inferno medal, not Hardest or any others, but still that does streamline the medal progression alot just being able to condense Easy/Normal/Hard into 1 if you can beat a mission on Hard
Fencer has a dash cancel mechanic, you can dash with melees or cc piercers and then you use shield 'attack 1' button

What I usually do with the weapons is play a mission on a low difficulty and see if it does it's job well, so I don't have to risk gimping myself
4.1 is a re-release of a PSP port (EDF4) of the original EDF2. It's easily the best start to the series. The game is very grindy and you're not really intended to play each mission back to back all the way through Hard or Hardest difficulty, you'll need to grind a bit to get both your armor value and unlocked weapons up to par but it isn't so gated that you need to finish every mission on one difficulty before moving to the next.
Actually of EDF2025, a PS3 title. PSP had EDF2 but it was a direct port of the PS2 game and came out only in Japan, that was one FPS slideshow though, it had even more enemies then EDF2025 and EDF 4.1 have, like the little rolling beetjes that exploded and giant flying centipedes.
Something you might want to clarify, the way you word it it suggests you select difficulty at the beginning of the game and it can't be changed until you beat the game or start a new one, whereas you pick the difficulty at the beginning of each stage.
That's a good point, I hoped that came through in the video what with the mission select screen but it might not have done.
Tehsnakerer to be fair I was playing a game and missed that first bit of you showing it, but saw when you demonstrated it again on level 1, if I had paid more attention I probably wouldn't have been confused.
You still make a good point though, I do make these knowing (likely a majority) of people are just going to have them as background audio while doing something else, considering that's how I tend to take in longer videos as well.

You say wing diver is the most maneuverable, but an exploit using the Fencer dashing mechanic and shield bashing during that dash makes the fencer the most maneuverable, by a… rather large margin.

Ya the missions get more and more crowded with enemies making it tough for the average computer.
My game freezes often in the underground missions.
imagine morph mod in this game you can morph in to the balam or mothership
New thumbnail is very nice
completed the game on wing-diver as a near-untouchable (low hp but fast in the air) area cleansing death from above and behind zeus-in-a-plate-mail-bathing-suit but struggled on early missions with fencer (slow as hell unless dash-cancelling, but the aiming is compromised due to negative mouse acceleration) and air raider (early vehicles got nuked instantly by ant acid, or couldn't shoot up effectively enough to kill the dropships without getting horribly murdered by ants), ranger was broadly functional but boring.
BTW I hated the rapier weapons, the disco ball of super random low damage death was nothing compared to the wonders of a ground skipping thunder bow (mid-range shotgun), plasma thrower or boring-but-effective sniper-beam laser-pointer.
