    Ty! I knew that for paper there are many different types of scissors for having decorative edges. Its nice to know there are the scallops for fabric.

    When you were cutting away the edges of the denim fabric I could see you would have 2 different finishes, depending if you were cutting clock-wise or anti-clockwise. It would be interesting to see what you could use those 2 different effects on :)

    I have my mum's and mine from 45years ago , made by Singer, but they won't cut now, they chew!,I bought a Fiskars pair here in Scotland, they are the best ever and very easy to work, not as stiff either. I use them so much!

    Thanks for all the sewing tips, Laura. I have my mother's pinking shears, too ... no nice wooden keeper though. Anyway, for as long as I have been sewing (over 50 years) those pinking shears of hers would never cut completely out to the tips - we had to get right up into the throat of the hinged area and squeeze the opposing sides together pretty firmly to get maybe an inch or so of the fabric pinked. I bought a new pair of Fiskars pinking shears after I was married and still sewing clothes for my husband and myself. They behave badly, too, by not cutting out to the tip of the blades. There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the blades to correct the problem. Ugh. I'm really leary about spending another wad for a different brand, but when pinking is called for, it would be nice to have a good set that works.

    Hello Laura, thank you for the tutorial. I have never heard of scalloped shears! I have a question......fabric which has been "pinked" is less inclined to ravel, is it the same with scalloped shears please? Thank you

      I cannot answer this question, however I have a blade for my rotary cutter that does cut scallops. I use it on felt or fleece projects.

      I would think the scalloped edges would work just same as the pinked edges when it comes to fabric - both would be less inclined to ravel. It’s just the scalloped edges look a little nicer due to the rounded hump instead of the tip of a mountain.

    • @marymurphy3578

      I know that it's the 45degree angle of the zigzag in the pinking shears that stops the fraying but really not sure about the scallop, since that's curved??? You could well be right, since the scallop would be a "rounded" version of the "pink"?!?! Thanks for the reply xxx

      The Fiskar fancy scissors (for paper) do cut fabric as well. I have a few pair by a different company that struggle with fabric. 💜🌞🌵

    Do the scalloped edges still fray?

    • @annette9747

      I pulled out my 1976 Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Sewing, in which they stated, “Scalloping shears work like pinking shears but cut more ravel-resistant edge-each round edge becomes bias.” Hope that helps.

      The guy at my local fabric shop does sharpen pinking shears for a dollar or two more than regular shears. With love 💜 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵

      I sharpen my own pinking shears by folding a few layers of aluminum foil and cutting through them several times. An elderly lady told me to do that and she had been sewing for over 60yrs!!! It actually works too! Hope this helps. Hugs from Ireland xxx

    • @marymurphy3578
      @marymurphy3578 6 років тому +1

      SewVeryEasy Yes I have tried this and it works!!! Slowly cut through the foil all along the length of the folded layers. This lady said that was how they sharpened pinking shears"way back in the dark ages!!!" LOL :) it keeps mine sharp and I have done this several times over the years. Would imagine it would work also for the scalloped shears, which I have only ever heard of in your tutorial! Thanks for sharing.
