This literally changed my life, I have now sharpened every single pair of scissors I have and as a quilter I have a LOT. I am beyond thrilled I learned this today. I've had a Gingher whetstone for years and just never realized it was as easy as it was. I have a vice in my glass shop and put my pinkers in it and went to town because what is life without risk? My pinking shears cut like the day they came out of the box now, I'm SO happy. Thank you so so much.
I'm glad it worked! Sorry if you took some work from a professional sharpener.
thank you thank you,,, been looking for year somewhere to get my pinking shears sharpened... hubby did them for me,, using your info... thank you!!!
Glad I could help!
I have an old grinder style scissor sharpener, with a straight - slide guide bar, bought from an old timer, and trained by him, back in the 80's. He taught me, concerning pinking shears, that they needed to be sharpened with the teeth facing into the grinding wheel. My grandmother had several dull pairs of pinking shears and let me practice on them. I did the sharpening both ways, teeth facing into the grinding wheel, and teeth facing away from the grinding wheel. There was a major difference, and teeth facing into the grinding wheel gave me the best results.
So, you are talking about an entrance burr rather than an exit burr???
@@BonikaShears Yes
@@BonikaShears I will try to send a picture of the grinder. Videos have yet to come through.

Bonnie - you've got all the answers! Really appreciate your videos
Glad you like them!
Thank you so much for this!! I found a beautiful pair of vintage pinking shears that I wanted to use for my historical dress reconstruction, and they needed just a bit of love. This video helped me get them cutting very cleanly!
You are so welcome!
now this video i needed for sure ty
It was requested.
Excellent information, I found some antique pinking shears which were made in the USA and they are still very sharp, I'm guessing they'll outlast more modern ones.
I think you are right.
hi there ,thanks for the upload
No problem 👍
Thank you so much for this video! I can sharpen knives no problem. Sharpening is kind of therapeutic for me. But today my wife brought me her picking shears to sharpen. I was totally drawing a blank! I was thinking how in the world do I even attempt that! But thanks to your video I am once again the Master of all time space and dimension.... well maybe not but I got a really nice I love you and a pretty good kiss out of it!
Do I get a kiss too?
Interesting..i need to take mine to be sharpened.
Check Www.findasharpener.com to find someone in your area.
I'll tell her she owes you
My mother gave me her pinking scissor but we never knows how to sharpen it
Thank you so much to guide us.
Me from Pakistan
I sharpen them on Ookami 5-0 degrees..
That works. Sometimes they might be minus 5!
At about 5:26 minutes into video, you show a sanding disk sharpener. Please provide a make and model. I just obtained an old Lectro Hone, and wonder if I could use similar sanding disks on it. Thank you again. Great video and learned much.
Hmmmmm. I looked at a photo and it could work. You would have to freehand. Buy the paper with psa backing so it will stick directly to the hone or get psa magnet sheets and stick it down and get our metal plates. You would probably need to drill a larger center hole. But it would be easier just to get my Scimech which is on the website www.Bonika com
Can you tell me if you only do one side of the pinking shears please. Also was a bit hard to see what you were doing but I'm guessing you were sharpening the outside of the cutting bit but not the inside. Great video anyway, many thanks.
It's the flat surface not inside the v's.
Ah, thank you!
Hi Bonnie What grip sandpaper did you use
Normally very coarse. 80 micron, there abouts.
I have a pair of Wiss Model E pinking shears that are anything like those shown on video. Have you ever tackled a pair of those. If not, do you want to try? Perfect cosmetically but do not work.
Can you look and see if the tempered edge is still there? If not, I don't think I can fix them.
Good information but what if you don't own a machine?
Take your shears to a professional who does. Sharpening pickers is NOT a DIY project.
Hi, possibly a silly question, can a left-handed pair of pinking shears be sharpened easily by a professional?
Funny you should ask. I just tried and filmed a video on it, but I did little to improve them. Can it be done... I suppose so. Is it easy? No.
@@Love2Cut Appreciate your reply, would be great to know if anyone can successfully sharpen for left handers? Thanks
@@Love2Cut Would it be like mirroring? As in shapening at the angle in opposition to right-handed blades? Logical thinking ha-ha😊
Can you just cut some aluminum foil to sharpen? 🤷🏻♀️
Noooooooo! I have to fix these all the time. It will make them duller and possibly ruin them if you follow the UA-cam videos that show tin foil folded over and over to be thicker.
@@BonikaShearsthank you for answering. I read this just in time!
Bonika, I hope that is your name, other wise forgive me. But thank you for posting this video. Chrikey! I almost ruined a good set

lol. And I was a Biology major.
OMG I just wanted too know how to sharpen my shears. As a crafter I wouldn’t be able to access a tool like you have. So disappointed.
You can't sharpen them on your own. You have to have professional equipment or you will ruin them.
Omg she dragged it out too long!
But you watched it anyway! Hope you learned from the video.
