I met Joe Walsh at a house party about 10 years ago. He was sitting by the pool playing guitar and I walked up with some girl I’d just met that night. He was basically sitting in the dark so we walked up but didn’t get too close to try and give him his space. We sat down and he told us we could come closer so we were literally 3 feet away from him while he played acoustic guitar. She had absolutely no idea who he was.basically got a free show for just the two of us for about 20 minutes before everyone else came up to the pool. Then other people joined him and started playing. I tried explaining it, but I don’t think she ever really understood who this man was and how lucky we were.

Joe's 'Story Arc' has been one wild and crazy ride! And, at the end of it all, he cleaned himself up and became a new man.
This time period (of this instructional), he was on a serious booze bender (among other things).
Look up his appearances on the Howard Stern show (at this time). They document a lot of what was going on with Joe, at this point.
Joe's a great human being. And, even when drunk, you could see he was a funny, smart but vulnerable guy. So good to see him cleaned up.

Read an interview in some mag, he described building a "talk box" using a Fender Twin Reverb as the amp/speaker, and his rattling all the fillings in his teeth out. And of course he got the guitarist job in Drew Carey's band over Slash. He also went to Montclair HS, Montclair NJ, where he took shop class and learned to weld...

Epic ! I had this on VHS in the 90's. More than anything else, IMO what really stands out about Joe's playing is simply his perfect phrasing. His solos say so much without being overly technical in the slightest. Its clearly based on the time proven classic "Q&A approach" to building melodies via cleverly connecting simple licks & riffs & such. & I'm 100% with him regarding learning Beatle tunes & NOT only for guitar, even if you don't necessarily like the styles/genre. Writing, as well as just understanding music in general is ALL about chord progressions. & virtually every good modern tune, even to this day, can more often than not be directly traced back to something Beatlesque. & yes, Henley is notoriou$ for being a ©/blocking D-bag, which unfortunately will ONLY diminish(perhaps greatly) the # of people familiar with his music in future gens.

That's pretty sage advice on learning ALL The Beatles songs. I don't believe it's only because they're the greatest band in the world. But rather because they actually used a wide variety of chord voicings. By going the varied voicings route (not to mention a fearlessness to try unorthodox instruments and instrumentation) by playing a common chord an entirely different way on the neck lends to a more unique sound in a song. Almost every Beatles song has a peculiar uniqueness either subtle or in your face. The earliest of The Beatles is as common as you get and only got more expansive from there. I can't imagine another band, however talented and unique such as Pink Floyd or even The Eagles that managed this so well as The Beatles did.

I learned quickly that I was never going to be as fast as Eddie or Vai, so I listened to who inspired *them* and people who didn’t “shred” but played guitar-based rock & pop.

That monkey in the background is actually a toy from 1989 called “Da Grunt”. I was born in ‘86 and my grandfather had one. Playing with it as a kid is one of my earliest memories. He died in the 90s and my grandmother died last year and I inherited Da Grunt. It sits on my computer desk (i still have the original packaging) and everyone that sees it is flabbergasted by how weird of a thing it is. I just about shit myself seeing it in this video lol. What a trip.
    Thanks for the laugh!

I think you should make this a series if you haven’t already where you review guitar instructional videos. I know you’ve done a few others already. Great video! Thanks for all you do.

Joe Walsh. He is fortunate to be one of those with near enough perfect pitch. Regular humans have to depend on the electronic tuners. Of course you could do it the Other old fashioned way. Get a tuning fork to set your low string to. He did a guitar setup video for a white Gibson from I think Gibson UK? That was a great video to watch to learn the basics of setting up a guitar.

Joe Walsh is the real deal. I had this video back in the day and honestly after watching it several times you really learn a lot about guitars and set and tuning. Dude gives Sage advise through the whole thing really. If your not that good and are good with words get into G tuning. And when he talked about playing slide guitar...come on the guy is so real about what he's talking about. You have to get passed the antics but I learned more real pro advise from this video than any other instructional. The Mark Slaughter one is great for beginners too.

Hey Mike, Michael here too. I really enjoyed this segment, im a huge Joe Walsh fan. In the Eagles, as the James Gang, or just Joe by himself. Im gonna go try to watch the video your showing.
Ive been playing on and off for about 15-20years, ive never stayed consistent, and ive learned some songs, and i can play them pretty good, minus the solo's. I am still, struggling to understand the different modes, and how to identify the root notes and patterns, until my head is swimming, and everything i try sounds like shit. Im now 50yrs old, and before its too late, i want to stay on my guitar journey, and really learn the thing. Ive gave up any rock n rolll fatasies, im not gonna get real good, join a band and become a superstar
But its for me...i would like to find someway to maybe perform
But just for fun...i love music, i love guitar, i love writing songs, id love to learn how to write and arrange songs
New to your channel, and im deally digging it so far🤘😎🎸

I think I just stumbled upon a gamechanger that even Joe would approve. A jewelry cloth. A silver one, at least because that's what I was using to clean silverware for a loved one. Turned really tarnished acoustic strings to looking and feeling almost new to sight and touch. I didn't bother with the underside because this was on a whim. But you pretty easily could if you detuned a few steps I imagine. Might very well keep a set lasting much longer as well.

That was delightful. I think he might have been drunk- I know Joe is a recovering alcoholic. He's a lovely guy- very funny, very honest. Stevie Nicks called him "the love of (her) life," incidentally. He got to be in a relationship with a young Stevie Nicks. Wow.

Joe is an amazing musician/artist. His talk box was gifted to him by the inventor Robert Heil who passed away last month.
That opening song was Walk Away, a James Gang hit. I don't think Joe wanted to get sued by Don Henley either.
Thanks for sharing this precious gem!

Many luthiers frown apon the knotted string on the tuner, Tom Bukovac blames this specific instructional video for all the trouble hes had untying the knots on the pegheads of alot of the guitars hes purchased 😅
I thought this method was dying down but now with this video and your recomendation of telling people to watch the original video to learn how to do it, there is going to be a whole new generation doing this 😂

    • @Turbo2Pete
      @Turbo2Pete Місяць тому +1

Right!.... in the first minute when I heard that I was about to fly to the comments to protest!!! NOOOO!!!! no knotting is needed!!! The taper on the post is enough to make it self-clamping!!! 4 wraps around the post UNDER the hole and that string will NOT move! (I have one guitar I had put away for 10 years, out of the case it was still in tune! Of course strung with no knots!)
