Wow - you have given me the confidence to have a go at this. I just bought a Nissan Primastar 2007. So I am going to attempt to put a sliding window into the door - for a first timer I might try the saw option....fingers crossed!
@maxv77 so, I fitted the windows flush and didn't use the rubber trims. However, heating the section that goes around the corner with a hairdryer works excellent. Jamie
Did u use any u channel around the inside of the metal, where u cut it. Our last kit came with some but out set for the new van doesn't have it. Do u know if you need to use it?
Simon, some kits come with a knock on trim that covers the sharp edges that can be left after the section of panel is removed. The kit I used didnt come with it and I was concerned that the windows would not fit tight if the U trim was added. It depends on the vehicle but some will be ok and others not. The Peugeot/citreon/fiat Van's are a very close fit for the window kit so no trim used. I did make sure to seal all the exposed metal with the primer!! Hope this helps, Jamie
Yep, depends on the vehicle. If you don’t use U trim, as you would in transits as they are designed for it then you’d want to use black silicon sealant on the inside to seal the inside of the window and cover both skins of the metalwork. This will stop any condensation falling into the gap and causing rust eventually. I’m lucky- mines a Transit custom so U channel used.
Jack, best thing to do is make up a template of the window, use the template as a cutting guide. if you look at the blacked out section going around the glass, that's the minimum size you need to cut out, theres no need to have the hole the same size as the glass, I allowed 50mm smaller than the glass, it does depend on the van spec also. Mines the xlwb boxer. Jamie
You use the inside skin as the guide If you get a punch and hammer and tap around the inside this will highlight the shape on the outside then you just join the dots and cut that out ,this way you take any guess work away (I have 30 years fitting experience )
That turned out great Jamie! Now if I had done that, the "south of the boarder bondo", (duct tape), would have let go and I'de be sweeping up a mess. Cheers!
HI, Currently if you join the motorhome and caravan club the annual insurance is about €250 or €350 if you dont. The van will be converted fully but not sure about fulltime van life just yet. The diesel cost per week really depends on how much driving you do. There's lots of variable's involved, full of fuel, water and how many people. The average van life budget of around €800 per month is a good guide but depends on how and where you shop etc.
Hi there, love your video! Im currently converting a van in Ireland. Do you know if it's required by revenue/insurance to have a window? I've installed a fiamma rooflight/vent.
OK, if you look up the revenue register and search for canpervan conversion or even Google it. It will bring you to a list of minimum spec. I also have details of some ng8neers who do the report. I can't remember exactly but, fixed/convertible bed, fixed cooking facilities the exact link below and I'll post in community tab also. Hope this helps jamie www.revenue.ie/en/importing-vehicles-duty-free-allowances/guide-to-vrt/conversions/specific-vehicles.aspx
Thanks for making this helpful video. Can I ask why you cut fork outside on the second? You said because it’s easier with that one, but doesn’t it follow the exact same profile from the inside? Also did you end up adding trim to the cut metal afterwards (notice that eBay listing doesn’t sell it)
I assume you mean from and not fork. The sliding door and the fixed panel are different from the inside. The door has almost a perfect template on the inside but the fixed panel does not.
That works very well. The blade cutting pitch is important and most saws have it adjusted for wood so important to set it for metal. Thanks for the really useful comment. Jamie
Very neat and tidy work and a perfect fit! Great job. This will give you so much light inside and also shield you from day time viewers. I would have liked to see the tools closeup, esp the shears. Show us also the type of caulking / glue used. I understand that Sikaflex makes a black glue in a caulking tube. Wonder if that is what you used? Keep up the videos!

This was really useful, thanks! Would love to see more like this :)
How did you bend the rubber trims around the square cut corners ?

Other interesting point, it's also possible to knock the 2 skins together and use the u trim over them to seal any gap. Works on sprinters
10 weeks is about right for Fastway to, first find your goods that they lost, then deliver them. In fact, I think you done well.

where is a good place to buy affordable glass windows? ebay ? :-)
Hi Hanna, there is a link in the description that should bring you to ebay listing for the windows. Jamie

Maybe a fine metal blade in a jig saw would be easier to cut the holes?

Maith an fear.
Too much primer adhesive should be on glass not frame and glass wasn't primed
Just following instructions that came with. You should watch the video again. Glass was definitely primed. Jamie
Completly unnecessary to cut cardboard
