I feel they aren't trying to be radiohead but want to be a new band, a raw band....but maybe it was a period a RH album could have been- if not separated between US, UK, brazil? Actually, it is not that rare, that they keep songs in their drawer. For example, the core of Nude was already written in the 90s and it was released in 2007 on In Rainbows. And now on The Smile album they released Skrting on the surface which they performed first during the early 10s. Nowadays they are playing live a song called Bodies laughing, which is from the In rainbows sessions

There is this weird synchronicity between radiohead album releases and my big personal break ups:
In Rainbow was the end of an 11 month manic relationship
King of Limbs was the end of my next long term relationship 2.5 years. the longest I had had to that point
Moon Shaped Pool was the end of the most intense 4.5 year relationship. I played "true love waits" to my GF after she came home from an affair she had been having, I knew something was wrong, we tried to get past it for months, then Radiohead dropped MSP and I got chills when I saw the album ended with "true love waits". shortly after we broke up officially.
I am married now with 2 kids, so I kind of hope Radiohead might be done making records cause I'd rather not loss my family. ;)
The interesting thing about this synchronicity is despite this strange occurrence, I don't emotionally connect radiohead with only breakups. I was listening to In rainbows this morning for the first time in years and it wasn't just heart break and nostalgia, radiohead has this strange way of always sounding new or maybe timeless, the themes are so much bigger and obscure than "heart break" or dare I say "melancholy". Radiohead songs are kind of like tarot card readings or Rorschach paintings they are whatever the listener needs them to be. I think it is part of their magic.

A Moon Shaped Pool is my favourite Radiohead album personally maybe because I'm prone to melancholy. I got into Radiohead I would say in around 2019 where nearly Ill Wind just got released I would say. I've listened to all Radiohead albums and non intentionally in order which was somewhat coincidental but the point im trying to make is that perhaps A Moon Shaped Pool is the perfect conclusion to the discography of Radiohead.
It's somewhat right of Radiohead to use their old tracks like for example True Love Waits. This song has been waiting for it's right place (no pun intended) since it's debut. The song however never made sense until the era of A Moon Shaped Pool which strikes as a tragedy. To me it becomes really haunting and perhaps perfect.
I stated before in reddit "A moon shaped pool is probably my favourite Radiohead album because its so consistent and cold. I don't find Radioheads other albums depressing compared to this one. It has my favourite opener and I still remember hearing it for the first time (burn the witch). The album is so orchestral and cold. Even when its warm it just allows the atmosphere to be cold somehow. I can nearly taste winter with this album. I seriously love every song and the strings were a masterpiece here. Every song keeps you excited for the next one.
Whenever I listen to it I just imagine Thom walking around the city walking through people without staring hence the song glass eyes and daydreaming existence. Its like walking around somewhere you thought existed trying to find somewhere warm but you can't. It's like different stories into one album. Its like walking around without caring. Its like a beautiful walk around somewhere cold as I've actually experienced it.
If Radiohead ended with this being the final album I mean I seriously wouldn't mind as this is literally the perfect closure and ending. Its their old works all added to a new album. Its heartbreaking as what Thom went through. He lost his wife to cancer and songs like daydreaming and especially true love waits must've been hard to record. I really love the anticipation of true love waits for an actual place and especially a way to close the album. I personally love the true love waits (album version) more as it tells a different tale much more different than the live version. It was a song waiting for perfection and its time.
I'd honestly give this album a 10 and it definitely deserves it's S tier rank. This is definitely in my top 3 albums of all time and everytime I keep changing opinions but I truly believe ill stick with this being my favourite."

Maybe I'm being too hopeful but I have a feeling they will still do at least one more album. I'd bet on something new around 2024/2025. Thom has released a little something every year since the release of AMSP and idk if it's just my impression but he just seems to be too musically restless to just stop with the band, especially considering the members don't have any type of interpersonal drama (that we know of, of course) that would force them to quit. And they've already reached that point in their career where they don't have to rush anything new, so I think it's just a matter of time. However if they decided to quit now AMSP really is a good way to go.

It is without a doubt their most depressing song, but also one of their most beautiful. I always interpreted it as, waiting for something/someone you love will hurt more than anything, but it is relentless and refuses to let go, like a small candle that is almost burnt out but keeps going. To wait means to suffer, but time is also limited in a way, cause one day, one way or another, the waiting will finally be over, the suffering will be gone, and only pure love has carried you all that way. The wait is finally over and we are reunited with that small piece we were missing that meant everything. True Love Waits.

Awesome! Your videos about Radiohead are the reason why I started listening to them and why they eventually became my favourite band!
However, I mostly listened to the albums from the Bends to in Rainbows, but apparently I've got another Album to check out.
Oh and in my opinion it's definitely the right choice they waited with burn the witch. I recently discovered it and was surprised by how good it was. Without the orchestra it would not have the same incredible feeling.

As much as i love radiohead, i still feel like they have the creativity and the energy to make one more album. As a fan i really want more radiohead music but i can understand if this is their last project as a band. This album feels so personal, its soft, calm and very mellow. The sound they produced on this album is so much different from their other projects and it does feel like a perfect send off album to what has been an amazing discography. I dont mind if they take more time to release another album, they can retire and still be one of the greatest bands to bless us with their music.

I recently had an amazing experience walking around The National Gallery in London for an entire day and listening to Radiohead the entire time. I heard The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesia, In Rainbows and capped it with A Moon Shaped Pool - all in chronological order. These aren't all their studio albums of course, but it's a big chunk of them, and certainly what I'd say is the essential Radiohead listening experience. I've heard all these albums before, but never this way, this close to each other, and with very little distraction other than looking at paintings.
I'm almost convinced that A Moon Shaped Pool is their final statement. Perhaps, more aptly, Thom's final statement with Radiohead. The quick listening means I was able to have the sounds of the various albums fresh in my mind, and A Moon Shaped Pool is where they synthesize every era of their trajectory into what I think is the 'most Radiohead' album of their catalog, if that makes any sense. There is no hesitation, no second-guessing with that album - it is the work of a supremely confident band. The fact that it ends with a reworked version of True Love Waits. a song that has existed since 1995 and therefore almost as old as the band itself, speaks volumes to me. Radiohead starts and ends with True Love Waits.

I love Radiohead. My mother and father listened to them while I was still in the womb and ever since. They've been there from the beginning for me. The songs resonate with me on a level nothing else in my life does. When I listen to their songs, I feel like myself, the music runs deep in my mind. So when I type this, I don't mean it lightly; I would be absolutely fine with A Moon Shaped Pool being the last album. The songs they've given us are so timeless and never get old, so I feel like it's all more than enough (atleast personally) The lads will probably never stop making music, I'm guessing, but honestly? I'm satisfied with everything they've given us. One day I'll listen to all they've made when it's all said and done, but I'm in no rush, I still listen to every song like it's the first time. Absolutely love this band.

Phil has said more than once that they’re not done. I believe Ed has said that there has not been a conversation between them that has made it clear that it’s over. (Tbf, I think most of these statements were said after this video was made). They always take a while to put out a record, I think all this stuff about it being their last is in part because of just how melancholic amsp was. They’re all just doing their own thing and enjoying that, I’m not convinced it’s radically different between them (except perhaps for some personal growth).

I said to a mate it seems like it could be a fitting end. I think Yorke and Greenwood have such a well of creativity that they almost need all of their groups just to satisfy all their creative avenues that they want to explore. I guess with Radiohead, comes the expectation of massive 2 year long tours etc, and at this stage of the game given their age and they’ve done it for years could mean AMSP was their last album. Time will tell.

The excellent totally free and fun time Thom and Jonny had doing their work on the Smile album makes me think MORE so that LP10 IS COMING!!!! Ed did his solo album - Phil has always worked on his own stuff, Jonny has become THE go to movie music composer and upper echelon modern classical music writer, and none of us are sure what Colin does, but probably sit around love his amazing life and write ludicrously amazing basslines. The Smile is a really awesome piece of work, but Thom and Jonnny on their own - that does not foretell the end. Watch them play "You" acoustic, then they did a series of 2 man acoustic/electric shows promoting "Hail to the Thief" - amazing by the way for any RH listener who never heard them - their is an audio performance "Capital Records" and an astonishing live set from some French program - the version of "There, There" is my favorite moment in Radiohead history - then they did a bunch of stuff in 2018 to pre-covid here and there just having a blast with laptops, guitars, loopers and synths - Sisterio some venue in Italy - whole show is on YT - it is an obvious lead-up to The Smile. And Thom's solo and Atoms for Peace stuff and composing Suspirium - he has always been at it. I think with Nigel and Stanley and still very much in musical prime in their early to mid 50's, they have got to have a lot to bring together and my hope is the most recent side stuff like EOB and the obvious joy behind The Smile - it has got to have them wanting to go into collaboration mode again to see where they are at now. I can see a very dense and maybe like - it takes 3 years before it hits you type album - or an emphasis on fun and all of the incredible skills they have all acquired - who knows if they'd want to find out how this would end up with them all back together but 9 while a super cool number, 10 - the whole binary thing - is an old RH trope and I believe - people I believe!!! Late 2023 or early 2024. Oh and if you are as much of a mega fan as I am and have seen the mentioned sets, you are in for an absolute Radiohead treasure treat X100, please check them out! Support The Smile - it may be our best way to influence them back in. And tell PTA to take a few years off from films so we don't have Jonny distracted (actually he is a genius I don't want that - Jonny can do both).

@middle8, job well done on yet another well informed and delivered band release video! I predicted soon after fully absorbing this album back in 2016 that it would indeed be Radiohead's last. There is a sense on finality in it, tying up loose ends and paying homage to their fans in studio recording long awaited for previously shelved tracks. Upon hearing the recent release of Yorke/Greeenwood's side project The Smile (A Light for Attracting Attention), I am further convinced Radiohead is no more. AMSP, the perfect bookend to their illustrious discography.

It was both a time of low points and blissful youth. One year later I got into OK and I was a maturing into a different person, learning from what my life had forced me to learn until that point. and of course, even if it might be their last album, that still doesn't mean that we won't get killer tracks from thom in the future, like on anima or on the 'the smile' album.

I've been following Radiohead since Pablo Honey. Saw them live for the first time on the Amnesiac tour and many times since. I can't begin to wrap my head around a world where the band doesn't exist anymore. Having said that, I agree with the video and the comments: If this were the last album, it would not only make sense, but it would quite literally be the perfect final album.
I will say this: The last time I saw them (Moon Shaped Pool tour), they were as incredible and fresh as any other time I've seen them. They've never disappointed and it didn't feel like I was a watching a band that was done. The Smile proves that Thom and Jonny clearly have more to say. And while it's a fantastic album, it's not Radiohead. I'm going to hold onto hope that once this Smile tour is over, and Thom and Jonny have had a bit of a rest, the band will reconvene for a proper follow-up.
Something tells me they (as a 5-piece) have more stories to tell.
    I'll keep my fingers crossed.

A very interesting thing that wasn't mentioned was Nigel's thoughts on the production of AMSP. He said he basically had to create the entire album through editing and splicing takes together because "thom doesn't write like he used to" Nigel made it seem like the band wasn't in the right headspace to actually make an album, resulting in a difficult production session but the final product is so good that any issues aren't really noticeable.
What's funny is that after that interview with Nigel came out, The Smile debuted so clearly Thom (and Jonny) can still write. I hope The Smile serves as a creative output for them so they can bring other ideas to Radiohead. I've been wanting them to do a more straightforward, guitar-centric album ever since In Rainbows and A Light for Attracting Attention fits that perfectly.
I can see a new Radiohead album coming in a year or two. Especially since they've said countless times that they want to stop making full albums yet they always come back with another one after some time.
