dunno if that's why. most modern producers quantize everything, which makes a sterile sound. The 'phat' sounds comes from those highly syncopated old-school breaks like "think" or "soul pride" or amen ofc, which creates those thick and funky rhythms we all love so much.
@@G8tr1522 I agree, as someone who was part of the 90's UK rave scene, we were chopping up breaks but didn't quantise every 16th note of a break and make it perfect, we just chopped them into smaller breaks and let them play so you get that syncopated feel with the rhythms. We sample via the FZ then often synced up something like a Fostex E16 track multitrack and dropped parts onto a tape channel. Yes Alesis for reverb, no audio from the Atari of course just midi (still got mine!~) I would hook up my Roland JD800 and my Juno 106, then there was a Roland TR 808 an MT32 and finally a Casio CZ 1000 , sometimes things would work fine, other times, syncing the tech could be a nightmare and saving it onto 2 meg floppy discs!. Give me Cubase Pro 12 any time! The tunez? Often a few more changes than in the track here, the longer and more fluid breaks if I remember correctly came later or as you might hear today but the heart was in the right place!. Glad to see someone still using all the old shit though. I couldnt go back now, we had to improvise and think on our feet as producers, I remember back in 1988, recording a long cymbal on quarter inch tape, the slowing it down and reversing it. Splicing the tape to a 20 foot length, then collecting all the studios mic stands in order to spooll the tape around the controll room in on a continiues loop, the re-recording the cymbal back on to tape. Today thats just a couple button presses on Cubase etc. Nice one!
