Penelope Rio - Getting Better or Worse?

Today I'm tasting and reviewing Penelope Rio batch 1 and batch 2 for 2024. Is the amburana trend continuing strong in 2024 or is it going to die off? Here's my full review.

I’ve already found 3 batch 3 Rio’s at msrp. I’m exited to try them.

My best two had a lot of vanilla on the nose and the pallet and a little less on burana

I was only able to get batch 2, so I hope it’s kind of decent. After sometime since this review has the thoughts changed on either one?

RD1 was William Tarr distillery, been around for several years with the Old Wm Tarr label. It is actually partially owned by UK Football coach Mark Stoops and their Amburana finished is what started me on the Amburana path

I’ve had Rio batch 2 and loved it. I think the subtleties of 2 would be more of a hit for me than your description of batch 1.
I’d definitely recommend people try amburana at some point, even if just a pour. It has such a unique profile

I preferred batch 1 to batch 2 myself! Amburana will likely always be on my shelf, but probably only a couple bottles at a time….
I have a Rare Character Amburana that is 7 year 95/5 MGP rye, and it’s… maybe the best version I’ve had.

So I think when they say honey its actually mead barrels they are using as its a Honey Wine basically so to get mead on the taste and nose is not too far off. I know when I went to Barrel King their Honey finished they said is Mead barrels and i wonder if that is what everyone is doing and not actual Honey. Im glad I got batch 1 lol, I love that hurricane of Flavor.
