Thanjs for showing us your cook kit Chris. I use something very similar for hiking... I've got a 1100ml titanium pot, and an original MSR pocket rocket (over 20 years old now 😳), and I always take a mug too... though I prefer my S2S delta mug, because i use it as an insulated soaking pot too... and it's got the ML measures! I'm a fork and spoon kind of girl (titanium, of course), and I always take my Opinel knife to cut open packets, cut cheese, salami, onions, etc. I've got the same wash kit too. No idea how much that all weighs... must put it on the scales one day!

Sounds like a great setup, Amy. Great to hear the MSR is still going strong too. Quality gear lasts! I was hoping to get the spork version of the spoon I have but that was what was available at the time and does the job, except if I try to eat noodles with it! Thanks for sharing your cooking setup!

Haha, yep... noodles and forks don't match! And I love noodles for lunch... but then eating oats with a fork is a bit difficult too 🤣. I pay the weight penalty for one of each, I think its an extra 30g.

After using a metho stove ( Trangia ) for years which worked great , but weighing at near 1.5 kg for a 5 day trip ( inc metho ) I switched to your set up over a year ago. Like you I've got the windmaster , but I have a Vargo Bot 700 screw top weight 140g. It can be used for cold soaking , but I use it to heat presoaked dried meals. I find the longer you presoak the tastier they are. I would then gently heat just before boiling then wait longer than the recommended time. This way I save fuel. Alternatively, I just heat the water before boiling and pour it into the meal packet. Again I wait for at least 20 minutes. I did The Overland over 6 days in Feb and one 100g net gas canister was just enough. For a mug I use an Evernew Titanium 400ml mug(45g) purchased from Zpacks

I think a Trangia is an essential part of every hiker’s cooking gear evolution. I like the idea of the Vargo Bot being sealable so you can cold soak prior to meal time. I’ve seen some hikers give up the stove altogether and just cold soak and eat cold meals. I think I could probably give that a go in warmer weather but I do like having hot food on cool/cold nights and a hot coffee or tea! Congrats on completing The Overland Track too. What an amazing hike that is!

@@FreedomOnFoot Yes fantastic hike. I aim to do the Overland once a year for as long as I'm able. One thing with the Vargo , if you screw it too tight it vacuum seals itself and you need a knife to open the lid by releasing the pressure . I always want hot meals hot drinks on a hike no matter what time of the year. The 200g cannister is worth it.

Diy add silicone tubing for your pot handles :-)

Yes, great idea! I'm always having to use my buff to pick up when it has just boiled. Will do some looking into that as a mod.

@@FreedomOnFoot silicone tubing is cheap ... Just bought some from Ali Express for $2/m. Get some soapy water into the tubing and it'll slide onto the pot handles easy. I use 3mm internal diameter tubing.

Talk of camping restrictions being lifted within the next two weeks. Here’s hoping!
Great topic idea. Nice compact and simple gas system.
I use metho myself (ever given it a go?) and might actually make a video on this topic myself.
    Thanks for sharing Chris :)

Yeah, fingers crossed we can get back out on the trail again very soon! I started out using a trangia back in the day and used metho with that but have used a gas stove ever since then. Would be good to see what your cooking setup looks like.

Nice setup. Looks like that will work well for most any adventure. Crow

Thanks Crow. It's been working for me really well so far and no plans to tweak the setup at this stage, unless cold-soaking becomes a thing for me! Hope you've been well and enjoying all your outdoor adventures.

    Hi,
I've been using a cheap cook set / stove I got from Aldi which has been working OK. It is a two pot set, but realistically I rarely use both pots, so could leave one at home. Total weight of stove and pots (without gas) is around 380 grams
I do tend to take way too much stuff when I go hiking so am looking to have a go at doing an ultra light overnight hike which will make me think about what I really need to take.
Thanks for sharing some info on your cook kit.

@Hiker in Australia, I was previously using a larger pot from a two pot set as well but they were bigger than I really needed so decided to downsize to the 900ml. It's a part of the fun of hiking in tweaking your gear setup as you go along. Interested to hear how you go with your ultralight setup on future hikes. Thanks for sharing your current setup!
