Probably better building this kit around the slightly larger 550ml mug that I've linked in description. Its wider base will mean better fuel efficiency and you'll be able to comfortably boil 400ml which is what a lot of dehydrated meals require. And it's only 24grams more. You should also be able to fit in a larger 60ml Nalgene.
For preparing freeze-dried meals or cooking directly in a cup, you'll need at least a 500ml capacity. Anything less is akin to eating dinner from a standard coffee mug. I recommend the 1100ml GSI Soloist. It's non-stick, and its lid serves a dual purpose: it can strain food when placed on the pot, and it can also cover the provided foam-insulated bowl, transforming it into a spill-proof drinking mug.
Inside this bowl, there's an ALOCS Trangia stand, which closely resembles the silver Trangia-branded version. This stand accommodates the Trangia spirit burner when packed into the pot. Around the ALOCS stand, a 3F-UL windshield can be vertically rolled as it's so thin that it fits between the ALOCS stand and the bowl's inner diameter. Resting on the burner, there's a foldable silicone funnel meant for refilling the fuel bottle with unused fuel, and a small dish towel on top of that. Additionally, I keep six foil-wrapped BBQ fire-starting cubes on top of the towel in case I exhaust my alcohol supply and need an alternative way to boil water or cook.
Lastly, stored beneath the pot in its watertight bag, there's a round grill. Its diameter is slightly larger than the ALOCS stand, making it handy if I have to use a smaller-diameter cup that is too small for the ALOCS stand.
I've been using pretty much the same rig on trips across Canada, the US, and around the world. On suitcase vacations I bring an Aeropress for decent coffee anywhere too. Ethanol is everywhere. Priming with a smaller bottlecap works for me. I sewed up a neoprene sleeve to insulate it, and my windscreen is a section of a beer can's side with holes punched along the bottom for draft. It wraps the mug to store it, then comes the neoprene sleeve, then the carry sack. Cups with lids are also faster to boil. A little kevlar cord pull on the triangle tab gives you something to lift the lid that won't burn up. And a cloth around the stove inside helps clean the cup between uses. The dropper is a great tip, the rig is complete!

just for safetys sake somebody should show what happens when you tip over a gas stove, it becomes a flame thrower, throwing flames a couple of feet easily. i tried to light a small camp fire this year in glencoe, came up with the brilliant idea of holding my stove sideways to get the branches going.... flames shot out like crazy as soon as the liquid gas got to the exit point, the scream i let out is still echoing around glencoe 3 months later.
Been there, done that, never did it again. Think in my case I decided that giving it a shake in cold weather would help. 🙈

Try a Speedster Stoves. More lightweight, safer - you can blow them out if you need or want to, and they are no spill design so if you knocked it over you won’t get burning fuel running out across the ground. Oh, and cheap. You can get a complete set up - stove and UL pot stand for less than a tenner 👍🏻
Just ordered one to compare! I really liked that the vargo is all in one with ground spikes and pot stand. But it is easy to spill
I have one and recommend it. I have the all in one stand and windshield. It’s lightweight so you have to be careful not to bend it
If you want to go down a rabbit hole of alcohol stoves, I highly recommend watching Hirem Cook. Some of his community inventions get a boil in 3 and a bit minutes. Some are quite ingenious. While he doesn't weigh he does use a heat probe and timer on all his tests.

I think you need an X-Boil! As fast as possible.
Using minimum amount of alcohol will both heat in shorter time and will save you from the hassle of pouring it back. Practicing and learning how much is enough will help.
I go for the toaks 550 ml UL with the X boil stove / windshield super light and efficient, nice viddy especially good to see different use of fuels 👍

I don't weigh my rucksack - I just put in what I think I will want to use along with a bit of emergency kit and set off.
Neither do I usually, sometimes I’ll bring a heavy frying pan and an axe. But this is for when I’m trying to run at the same time and ever gram makes a difference.

I have a triad. But it is too finicky. The evernew titanium with pot stands really shines for me. The fancy feast stove is the best, but bulky for your cup.

You may get a faster boil and use less fuel with a 750mm, Tomshoo or Toaks, style pot. makes cooking easier and the weight penalty is marginal.
Great concept, going to make up one this weekend, i got one of the Vargo stoves last xmas, cant say i will pack it in the kit, just something about it that just annoys the hell out of me, it is painful to get it to bloom without preheat, will make up another little alcohol stove out of a couple of redbull cans and some carbon felt. like the idea of removing the spork handle to fit
I not sure what is was but you had me crying with laughter at your misfortunes. I’m really not a fan of alcohol stoves because of the fact you often can barley see the flames. Our solution whilst sailing however is find a nice beach, burn some coconut husk and place a grill over it but I guess that defeats the object of your exercise. Great video as always !!

Hi Stephen, I think this is a great idea in term of weight saving. In padt I tried solid fueul but as you say the smell is terribile and the coicked food taste very strange. I was thinking to try something similar to fire drafon but after your try I changend my mind🤣🔥🤣

Instead of tin foil, make a micro windshield from a foil roasting tray - its a bit more long lasting, but be careful, you may cut your fingers on the sharp edges....... 🙏🏽

My memory of a soda can stove was the time my friend tried to use one in winter and it took him 45mins to boil his water. Kind of put me off the idea. But maybe I shall revisit sometime.

I would not recommend cooking in a tent, too dangerous, besides the fire hazard, I hike and camp in bear country so I never allow food or toiletries in the tent.
I don’t want to be mauled by a bear going after a Snickers bar 😊
With the weather in Ireland if you don’t cook in the tent, you don’t eat. I don’t know anyone who camps here all year round and doesn’t. It does have its dangers of course! You have to be careful.
No bears here, although I recently had a slug on my water bottle in the morning.

Same here, I camp 95% in black bear territory, black bears are not as aggressive but I’m still not taking a chance.

Speedster stoves
One thing I've found is that not all bio ethanol fuels are equal, I have both the Fire Dragon and a Biola (Amazon), the Biola boils faster by over 2 1/4 mins for 500ml tap water (and only 20s in total burn time between them) so less fuel is needed with the better fuel.
For a safer alcohol stove check out the puck type as they are no spill, then blow out & screw the lid on to retain unused fuel.

Great setup Stephen . My wee titanium alcohol setup weighs 308g . That’s with the titanium windshield plus pot grippers . Only use gas now when i’m camping in a campsite . Always carry a fire steel striker as had problems with wet conditions and lighters in the past .
What striker do you use, a mini one? I like that the lighter can also be used to speed up the priming of the stove
Also you say the gas canister is heavier....
That's only true for a few uses. If you wanted to use an alcohol stove for 5-7 days or more, the gas canister would be actually lighter because you'd need to take most of that bottle you have there. That's the myth of alcohol stoves, they are only really ultralight for short 1-2 day trips, in real world and/or windy conditions they use a LOT of fuel.
Also I'd be really wary about using it in a tent. Look up 'Fire! An idiot's review of the X-Boil alcohol stove' by·The Walking Kev. Be safe. Heat travels down as well as up, so you'll also need to carry something to protect your tent floor too.
I’ll still use gas a lot, this is really just for those fastpacking ultralight one nighters where every gram counts

I've often thought about going back to alcohol stove I used them years ago but got fed up with the faff the weight saving is very appealing I've been looking at the trangia micro so might give that a go next summer
Hard to beat gas for the speed of cooking but sometimes just want minimum weight and peace and quiet
The Trangia Micro is a gel burner, which is useless in all but the calmest of conditions...

Love the triad for its fuel efficiency and built in stand. You'll recover all the unburnt ethanol if you extend the bottom leg as well. Pour the excess down the bottom leg first then tip further and finish pouring down the upper pot stand 😊.
The Trangia is a much simpler system because the fuel is stored inside the stove. A lot of these tests crow about the light weight of the titanium stoves but then fail to include the size and weight of the fuel bottle and filler. Why carry extra stuff if one item will do?
Does anybody make a smaller Trangia style burner that is self enclosed? Been out of the market for a while.
Yes, passing the lighter under the stove a few times is enough to warm up the fuel and get it primed faster; no need for an extra bottle cap and open flames.
Apparently speedster stoves are a good newer option you can store the fuel in for a trip. I’ve ordered one to test. I liked the fact this stove has the ground spikes and pot stand built in. I included the fuel bottle weight at the start for the whole kit

Last evening I went for a hike and took my Trangia with a tin can pot support/wind breaker to make a cup of oatmeal. I was surprised at how hot it got. My oatmeal was boiling over and I had to take it off to cool it down. The Trangia includes a second lid with a sliding cover that can be used to regulate the flame, but I never needed it in the past. Now I see the genius in the whole system: It gets hot cleanly, it contains its own fuel, and the flame can be adjusted. All in a rust resistant little package.
I just discovered the Trangia Micro Original. That looks like a great little package. I have the same burner and pot support but it came with a bigger pot and lid. The micro is a smaller overall package; perfect for day hikes.
I use a titanium wind shield/pot stand and SBP spill proof burner, they're 70grammes WITH the stove full of fuel! I use a 750ml titanium pot with an msr folding spoon and lighter. I prefer dragon bio ethenol fuel.
Might investigate those spill proof burners. Do any have built in pot stands or ground spikes? That’s what I liked about this.
@@StephenJReid if you use it with the titanium wind shield/pot support you don't need the legs, they're just a small pot with a leak proof screw on lid with a fiberglass filling covered with mesh. a trangia stove can hold quite a bit of fuel (way more than youd need for an overnighter) & has a lid to seal it - fits in a standard 330ml cup from any camping store, pair that with an x stand youve got the cheapest cook kit you can think of - ive found most middle aged men will have a trangia knocking about in thier garage. the alternative for gas stoves would be a toaks titanium 550ml pot bsr pocket rocket stove & 110g gas canister all nests nicely if you dont mind the noise & time is a factor.

Have you tried “Heet” auto fuel treatment?
I switched to the esbit fuel cubes. Very small and light and you don't have to worry about spilling the fuel.
Are they toxic? Could you use them inside a tent?
@@StephenJReid I think all fuel is toxic in an enclosed space but I have used them to cook under my poncho Tarp tent and just outside my tent.
@hobofab hexamine is particularly nasty in confined spaces, pure ethanol only gives off carbon dioxide.
At 161 grams you can carry the Evernew Appalachian stove set instead. You get a 500ml pot w/lid, multi fuel stove, and alcohol burner that works better than the Vargo. This is all titanium and a bit more expensive than what you're using, but the performance is worth it. Burn ethanol, Esbit tablets, or twigs all safely. The stove is it's own wind screen. Simple, light, and effective.

I've got a toaks siphon alcohol stove. Weighs 20g, the toaks stand weighs similar and it blooms in less than 10 seconds. Other than speedster stoves I think lighter than that is really difficult to achieve.

With a hexamine tablet or an alcohol stove, you are not going to be able to cook a hello fresh meal. I ordered a week of Hello Fresh and I needed the gas hob and or the electric stove at 220 degrees. Five days increased my gas and electricity bill by a large amount. The standard Hello Fresh is 60% of the first box, 25% off the next 3 boxes and free gifts.
Depends on the meal, i cooked an entire meal on my tiny gas stove on a frying pan. Could have used an alcohol stove instead although would have been slower.
Nice set up... I use the 750ml . Tho to be efficient on any fuel i really need to buy a dumpy 900 or 1100 with a larger diameter base. I carry for 2 tho. I don't find gas to be the "roaring devil" as I turn the flame down and it's unobtrusive. Could be my industrial deafness tho'😜
What gas burner do you use? I’ve got a wide one that burns quiet but it’s quite bulky. I find the small pocket rocket style ones to be quiet loud
Mine looks very similar to yours. I use the tiny BRS3000T but I much prefer my cheap "remote" stoves that don't sit on the cannister. The BRS does roar but not so much on low. On high it's noisy and most of the energy goes up the sides. I think my next stove will be a soto. I will fire the stove up later and check the noise levels. Perhaps im used to it... Arghh damn you 😂

For years, I have never seen the need to have my gas cooker going full bore .. being of the opinion that any flame or heat going up the sides of my pot is largely wasted. Just enough to get the job done and realistically, it does not take that much longer to get the pot onto a boil. Much quieter .. and savings in gas consumption over the duration of a trip .. try it!
I still use a Camping Gaz Bluet 206 Gas Burner that I bought back in the 70's .. the one with the integrated Wind Shield. Yes, it is a bit bulky, but the Accessory Folding Foot Support is removable, as with the Pot Supports and once installed, the Gas Canister cannot be removed until empty. I keep the set, together with Accessories, in a rectangular 'Toiletry Bag' which fits nicely into my pack Side Pocket or just as good, hangs on the outside for even quicker access and/or to free up space inside the pack.
A bonus .. the Gas Canisters are still available at my local Supermarket and by my calculations, cheaper per gram of gas than the newer screw-on ones.
And .. Inconveniences 🙄. I am a 'baby boomer' (YOB 1950) and what today could be considered great inconvenience and worse 😫, for us back then, was a given and taken in stride 😏.
@@thomasmusso1147 If it still works for you thats great! I moved away from the pierced containers years ago due to packed down size being bulky. I also refill my butane containers and it reduces my gas costs from £4 per 100g to £0.44 per 100g! Basically I get a small gas cannister for under 50p here in uk.
Hi Stephen, is this much the same as a trangia burner, with legs. I take it methylated spirits can be used as a fuel and also you need to be careful of methanol or ethanol poisoning. Don't be rubbing or get it in your eyes as it will cause blindness.

Great video! Bcb make a tiny fire dragon stove for their gel blocks that's about the size of 2 blocks. I put a similar sized kit to yours together using it. It works and it's fun but it's not very stable once it's got a mug of water on it. Definitely agree a wider container is faster, also more stable. Alu seems better than ti too. Its pretty much always windy where I live and the ground is never that flat so for day hikes I've ended up using a thermos flask. It's not as fun but definitely easier and safer.
Yeah for day hikes I just tend to use a thermos in winter.

Think you might have missed a point. It was around 7/8mins in perfect conditions. 14mins when it’s unshielded with a breeze. So really 14mins is worst case senario

I like like to add one think about gas vs alcohol. Alcohol is only lighter if you go out for a short trip. If you plan a longer trip and plan to cook more often gas becomes the lighter option real quick. You just get way better milage out of a gas can.

Mostly Met office and also Mountain-forecast.com for summit specific. But you have to check regularly. Weather in mountains can change. Never fully trust it
Great review Stephen. I use a similar set up on day hunts here in NZ. Use a Toaks Cup and lid (think it's like 250ml) with about 60ml of meths in an old plastic watertight cosmetics container, a wire stand, Toaks meth cooker (tin with holes on the side, BIC lighter and wipe cloth. Think it's heavier than your set up but that's because I need to carry more fuel for coffee (no lee way here). Actually really enjoy using it because (1) it requires a little tender loving care to cook with which slows me down, and helps me to rest (2) it's super compact. I pack it in an old thin ankle sock. Can get 4-5 boils out of it. The trick is only boiling what you need (so boiling enough not too much). Works really well. But if I want to cook or overnight, it's the Jetboil. Interestingly the Jetboil Stash will bring 200ml of water to boil in 2 minutes, using the Jetboil stash burner with the Toaks Cup and lid = 4 minutes. The Jetboil pot is so much more efficient and better for trips using the smaller butane cannister.

Really like the jet boil stash, it’s my go to when I’m not trying to be really lightweight.
I think what’s great about alcohol burners is that there’s so many different combos you can use. Becomes very personal with all the setups people put together.

I can get much lighter - the OGE burners are 14-17g, Des Cattys is light too,. Speedster is 8g, X-Boils are 12g for the burner, 40g with windshiield/stand and smaller than the Vargo. All these are unspillable variants of the Kojin stove so if you knock it over, no burning tent /wood pile or fingers!
I guess with some of those you don't have a potstand then, but you can make one out of wire which is a few grams, or get a titanium windshield and pot stand. The Lixada ones are 15g. So say a Speedster + Lixada stand would be lighter than your stove, and a better windscreen and stand :-) You might need to add a few grams for titanium pegs or wire. And even better, nearly all of these are way cheaper than the Vargo.
And faster - the X-Boils and Speedsters are timed at boiling at a fraction of what you had there, not sure how fast the OGE is, but usually faster than 14 mins I think. Kojin style stoves burn fast, usually boil in 5-10 mins. Good for boiling, not sure about simmering.

@@StephenJReid same! I knew all this cos I was just researching which to buy, the simmer ring is what has swung it for Speedster - other makes I've found that are UK-based are Des Cattys, X-Boil (expernsive here) or Outdoor Gear Essentials now do their own.
@@StephenJReid I have the largest Speedster meths stove which is 50ml and it burns for around 20 or so minutes if filled right up and can boil 1,000ml in 15 minutes. You can buy a flame controlling lid for it that slows the burn time and allows for simmering.
Maybe take a look ar speedster stoves 🤔
Interesting. Seen stoves like that but I liked the built in pot stand of the vargo.

The Toaks Siphon stove is lighter and better. The Toaks stove is 20g and the Vargo stove is 30g plus the Toaks stove is a lot better then the crappy Vargo stove.
Why didn’t you like the Vargo?

I just tried to make a beer can stove to beat the tryad. It weighs 14 grams, but not as stable, nor as sleek. And even though it's half the weight, we're still only saving 16 grams....😅
Plus I think you’d need a pot stand too?

I love alcohol stoves, but the weight argument is not valid. If you only bring fuel for a couple of boiling cups of water, then you are pretty much doing a day hike and weight is not a concern.
Weight argument is very valid for my stated use.

You keep mentioning you wouldn't do certain things inside your tent. I'd posit you should not use a stove in a tent, full stop. It's just a bad idea.
And then how does one cook in terrible weather?
@@StephenJReid - I mean, I'm a hammock camper, so I always have some kind of tarp/rain fly I could cook under if needed. Maybe cooking under a tent vestibule would be a bit more safe (as opposed to inside the tent). I'd just worry at the minimum about damaging expensive gear, or much worse, catching a small nylon tent on fire whilst sitting inside it.
@@alanstrange2421 Ahh ok. Cooking inside the vestibule is usually assumed when talking about cooking inside the tent. Definitely risks to it, but most seasoned tent campers do it without a second thought.
