- Mike Portnoy played Burn It to the Ground by Nickelback on the Drumeo channel and lit the internet on fire. As a massive Dream Theater fan, I thought it was pertinent to give my reaction to it.

I’m not a drummer by any means, but It’s crazy how I can recognize all of Portnoys fills lol. Like yep that’s definitely one of the portnoy moment of all time
I hope that Mike plays the same fills for 30 more years. :D
BASED 🙌💪🤘
Dude...
Mike telling a story makes it easier to see why Prog Metal is often 12 minutes a song
the hardest thing to learn as a musician is restraint.
To be fair i might be biased ,but in this song i think portnoy 99% of the time did it justice at least from a geeks perspective...i love restraint in some bands,i believe ringo for example did it amazing or Dom from Muse, chad smith from RHCP do that good, but thats because theres something else in the song that fits well at that time, for Nickelback,i dont mind their old songs simple radio hits, but these new ones sound like "copyright free ai hard rock"
Mangini never learned this. He was allergic to dynamics and space between notes. He hated good drum tone.
When my dad taught me music, one of the first things he taught me was "the notes you choose not to play are every bit as important as the ones you do", and then he introduced me to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Dam Skippy, as a drummer I always find myself wanting to fill ,fill, and ad more filling, even to Proud Mary😁
@@scottlowell493 WTF are you talking about, Portnoy fanboy? ua-cam.com/video/Q1GVVv42Ry4/v-deo.htmlsi=Ag9LUhRLqMiL7kJH
"That shit makes me bat shit crazy" is actually an amazing lyric. You very rarely get a 4-syllable multi-syllabic rhyme in rock music. Almost exclusively reserved for hip hop. Although "shit" is used to rhyme with itself, so points off for that.
That's why Small Town by John Mellencamp is so genius. What rhymes with "town" better than "town"? Nothing, that what! And that's why he decided to end every single line of the song with the word "town." What a legend!
@@reshpeck After reading your comment I starting singing it in my head, only to realize I was singing Jack and Diane 🤦♂️. That song just never dies
There’s no point arguing about songwriting with this guy
Have you ever tried?
“Dream theater fans have sex in protest” holy shit, that was gold. Will definitely be applying that one to other goober fandoms in the future
I had to replay that part for my wife and she laughed so hard she snorted. Then we had sex for the first time in protest
Bahahahahaha
You left out the best part of the quote, "Dream Theater fans have sex FOR THE FIRST TIME in protest".....LOL
Nickel back is honestly way underrated, everyone liked them back in the day, but they just became so damn popular people got tired of them and then it became popular to hate them.
This has always been my favourite Nickelback song, like I was definitely on the train of originally hating them but after hearing this song a couple years ago I realized that they were a solid band and I got to see them live back in September when they put on a free concert in my city and they were really fucking good. I've also always loved Mike's playing so it was really cool seeing his take on this song, that double bass part in the chorus was killer and a bunch of his drum choices were super solid as well and made an already badass song even more so imo
hating nickelback was always cringe
@@DigitalBath306 To be fair I was a lot younger back then and didn't know much better, but I still have a lot of appreciation for them as musicians and songwriters (even if some stuff isn't that great lol)
Their live show is extremely good. Live mix is like the record. Chad sings spot on. Fantastic stage presence. If you like the songs, it's an outstanding experience.
@@BecomeTheKnight Definitely, yeah. It was honestly one of the best live shows I've seen, they were killer
@DigitalBath306 in this case, I am totally fine with being cringe. It is just not my musical taste.
From one drum god to another, you can easily point out to Neil Peart with his "Peart Groove" that he does on the ride cymbal on a whoooooooole ton of songs (Spirit of Radio, La Villa Strangiato, etc.)
Not really a NB fan, but my friend talked me intin going to one of their shows, and honestly, they fucking jammed out hard. I couldn't believe my ears.
Same with me for FFDP. They supported Metallica and, once you let all pretense go, it was a good fucking time.
I clicked “like” based on the intro alone
The intro was perfection
It was really funny, yeah
So true
@@andrewpappas9311 The voice was on point
@@mrbungle3310 Definitely
Not gonna lie, the way his face lit up when he yelled out "OH!" as soon as he recognized them was kind of heartwarming lmao
So glad to see your a fan of Babylon 5. My favorite show
Same!
@5:55 I bet this is how John Myung feels every DT rehearsal lol.
Funniest part of the original video is when Portnoy says that if he'd actually ended up playing the tour with Nickelback there's no way he'd have been allowed back into Dream Theater.
Seriously though, he's said so many things in interviews over the last several weeks that clearly indicate how happy he is on a very deep and personal level to be back with them. It's incredibly endearing. I wonder about that too because Portnoy's work with Neal Morse has been, in my opinion, representative of his best and most creative drumming. Maybe he just isn't cognizant of how his musical expression found itself most fully realized outside of Dream Theater.
Or maybe my own bias doesn't have any bearing on anything. I just hope he can continue with Neal Morse alongside his reintroduction with DT.
He tried so hard not to say they suck,he played around it so well
From now on I will refer to nickelback songs as "not a thinky"
18:48
Ironic how you couldn't stop talking while asking Mike to stop talking...😅
Damn dude its nice to see the glass again!
It's coming back. At least on this channel. Seems to be the vibe.
As one of the nerd virgins dweebs who left a dickriding comment on the Drumeo video lol…I’ll try to defend it.
Compared to most of the other drummers in this ‘drum karaoke’ series, I think you have to acknowledge MP’s total confidence and willingness to just leave it as one imperfect take. So many of the other drummers are stressed out and complaining the whole time lol, and end up doing at least 2-3 takes if not more. Yes, that confidence can lead to some overplaying but hey he’s Mike Portnoy that’s what he does, and that’s why they brought him in. I just don’t see many other drummers be that creative and confident on the first take.
BUT they are teasing another one of these where he gets his ass kicked way more (since this song/style is basically right in his wheelhouse) so that’ll probably be more interesting. Enjoyed the video, thanks 🤘
Confused about the bit at 10:00. The guitar is not playing dotted quarter notes there, it’s playing eighth notes right along with Portnoy’s double bass.
Also, the vocals in the verses very much emphasize the pulse, but during the chorus the vocal rhythm shifts away from that. So yeah, I think the double bass choice works.
But of course, the song becomes less of a head bobber or a jump-up-and-down song at shows. So, it works either way, for different reasons.
In fact, watching 6:45 again, I’m almost certain that’s why he decided to do the double bass on the chorus, because the guitar switches to playing eighth notes.
Everybody went nuts over the double bass in the chorus, but actually I think the best change he made was to match the guitar and bass in the verses with his kick. To me, that matched the song better and drove it more, while the double bass in the chorus was maybe too much. Maybe for one chorus.
Agree with Mike here. The original drum part makes this song sound huge, lets the riff breathe, and takes a back seat to allow the vocals to shine.
Mike P's parts are fun, but would garner too much attention for the simplicity of this track.
Okay, that intro was gold. Also, you can see the Jameson splash on your finger, outside the glass.
You yelling at Mike to get the point was great.
WHEN the new Portnoy DT album comes out, you should do a "Portnoy Fill" counter to see how many times he sneaks the same fill into the new album just to really nail home that he's BACK HOME BABY!
0:00 Average Mike morning surfing the internet
Mike is my favorite yapper 🙏🏻
The intro was perfection 🤣🤣
Always a treat when you upload
I happened to LOVE mike's version. To each their own.
I really enjoy those Drumeo challenges, so good 👍🏻
Mike: *plays a single note
Mike the Music Snob: 👆🤓
Next up, you should react to Jordan Rudess playing Alicia Keys & JAY-Z 's Empire State of Mind.
Might do that!
Mike wrote 3 fills and made a career out of them. You have to respect that
Nickelback tier list when?
Great video Mike! I recommend checking out the full Drumeo special he did, where he even addresses all his signature Portnoy idiosyncrasies.
I freaking loved this! I hope Mike gets to do another interview with Petrucci where they banter Portnoy's fills XD
As far as Taylor Swifts drummer doing Sleep Token...they had Luke Bryans drummer do Gojira recently. lol
If I didn't dislike Luke Bryan so much, I wouldn't be pointing out it's Luke Combs' drummer 🤣
@@professionallyamateur5991 haha it may as well be Luke Skywalkers drummer to me
@@The-Crypt 🤣🤣 plenty fair. Still, a pretty cool video!
Mike, "the guitar snob", calling everything *_"Obnoxious!!"_* as he nurses a quadruple shot scotch whisky, neat, with the bottle alongside, watching industry titans play and larp...
→ ...is the greatest display of unintentional *_irony_* !
The intro alone was worth a sub. Well played, Sir.. ;)
Maybe it's just the quality that Drumeo chose with removing the original drum part but I actually thought guitar part in the chorus was more in line with Portnoy's double bass. But now I totally hear it the other way now that you mention it.
20:24 fill thats exactly like 2x4 by Metallica from their album Load (love that album) had me on the floor. You've got a new sub!
Funny how he mentioned jokingly having taylor swifts drummer play when they already had dua lipa's drummer play slipknot lol
18:15 Daniel Adair is awesome. He's a crazy good live backup vocalist too.
"Hitting the drums so they would sound amazing".
I am pretty sure, that the Nickleback drummer definitely gets sample replaced and, most likely, time aligned. So, knowing that, this comment may be inaccurate.
Mike's version drives the song far more than the original even just with the change to the kick in the verses.
His instant ear and listening about what's going on in the track is impressive. Tasty.
Mike just has pure class.
This song does sound like Rebel by Extreme at the beginning.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one to catch that.
It’s like a mix of Rebel and Walk by pantera
Wow you were so funny in this video and you then laughing all the time. Great man 😂 🤘
Haha, your intro was amazing :)
Lmao thank you.
On the point about having the same drum fills for 30+ years, I can relate in saying some guitarists get away with using pentatonic scales for their whole legacy. It just sounds good and easy to get away with.
The double bass doesn't suck but it doesn't really work either, it's distracting. Everyone still hating on Nickel back, baaa sheep.
Here for the first time. I liked the commentary. Like, i would enjoy talking to you in a bar. Prob because i like knitpicking. O well, most progfans do. Cheers! Oh, btw, I'm drinking Waterford Gaia 1.1. 🥃
Thank you!!!!
You definitely got to give nickelback credit the been doing the same type of music for the past 20 years even when it is not cool to play rock.
Hah, this is fun. Mike having a go on the fly with this tune. Send Mike to Rush if he's free and bored, they're getting back together, need a great drummer. Would be ace seeing Mike in Rush making the circle complete..
That would be fabulous imo
Taylor Swift's drummer playing Sleep Token is exactly what we would do.
You should do a band overview about Nickelback like you did with Pink Floyd and Tool, going over their music and hearing your thoughts about them and explaining why people love to hate them. Might be fun ^^
Mike, you obviously didn't know that Nickelback's drummer Daniel Adair also plays in a jazz fusion prog rock/metal band Martone
I did not know! Thank you for sharing 🤘
The guy is a beast! Hope drumeo get him on one day, he'll surprise a lot of people he's so underrated
I thought you said Nippleback.
This needs to be top comment
You mean Ticklesack
Picking out the 2x4 fill was so good lmao
Yeah... I'm one of those rare Dream Theater fans who thinks that Mangini coming in was the best thing that ever happened to them. I love me some old DT, don't get me wrong, but by somewhere between 6 Degrees and Train of Thought, it'd gone pretty stale. How many fucking albums did we need the same goddamn 10-step doldrums?
Mangini came in and absolutely revitalized their sound, and played a lot of their very best stuff. I _adore_ "The Astonishing".
Can he be a _touch_ clinical sometimes? Yeah, absolutely. Was he a _bit_ obsessed with his symmetrical kit layout and playing outward instead of left-to-right? Oh hell yeah. But the man is genuinely a beast.
My favorite Mangini drum part is in Lost Not Forgotten. A lot of people don't realize that the quick poly kicks near the beginning are actually both feet at once. It's why it sounds so huge! That is _hard._ It's fairly hard to do with your _hands_ let alone your feet!
And my favorite DT elitist nonsense was "They never should've gotten rid of Portnoy!" Bitch, he _quit the band._ They didn't "get rid of him". What were they supposed to do, just go mope for a decade while he worked through his demons?
I fucking love super mad as hell Mike
thank you
Prog dudes will sit there, shit on the whole video, and then at the end say, "Oh, that was fun; it had good energy" lmao.
Nickelback is one of the few Canadian bands that was able to crossover without completely undoing what made them them. It ain't my cup of tea, but good for them. Most Canadian acts that have ambitions to be huge will completely fuck up their shit to chase trends. Looking at you, Finger Eleven. Burn it to the Ground is probably the last Nickelback song I listened to more than once over the last 15 years. And that was only because it was on an NHL video game.
Also, it's the halftime feel on the second chorus that got me.
The world will only come together if Mike Portnoy, Taylor Swift, Jason Newsted and Mick Mars come together and make a super group
The commentary has absolutely valid reasoning. I'd argue that the double bass falls right in with the 'power rhythm' set up by the guitar riffs and fills the void of these flat strokes in the chorus. The other thing is, there are thousands upon thousands of session drummers you could hire to play radio edits live. You could even find one on UA-cam. If the radio cut is what you want, hiring Mike Portnoy would be woefully misguided.
0:00 to 0:40 thats a very accurate impersonation of my reaction
Bro, what's up with these videos? The editing is mmm aaaa. Very compliments
Thank you! Been working on it 🙏
Glad people are enjoying it.
This the equivalent of adding espresso to a decaf coffee
Portnoy's perspective on the drums has always been treating them like they are a full instrument, capable of adding just as much to a song as a guitar or vocal line, rather than the more traditional viewpoint of drums being there to keep the beat and maybe drive dynamic changes and provide the occasional accent with a fill. Does he get carried away sometimes? Sure...but he's Mike f'in Portnoy, so he can do whatever the hell he wants. He doesn't have anything to prove...the list of bands he's drummed for shows just how respected he is in the rock and metal community, just how much trust there is that he can learn it fast, play it right (every time), and be a badass onstage. His musicianship is outstanding, and I am really looking forward to seeing him reign in the excesses of Dream Theater and actually get them writing decent SONGS again (rather than prog metal études with vocals).
Love Nickelback, this is one of my favorite songs.
4:15 - Only time Godsmack ever sounded anywhere close to that was on their When Legends Rise album in 2018
He tried to hold back and still overplayed it.... but, you know... it's Mike Portnoy so he is required to. People always fellate these professional drummers in these videos for being able to busk through a song at a professional level... but they're often pretty mid. I fucking suck, but give me 10-20 minutes to busk my way through a song semi-convincingly and I can do it.
Dotted quarter notes*
It's basically in 12/8.
The cckriding is immaculate in those comments.
Yeah it's a bit much lol
Or or or orrrrrr maybe they just really like the band/artist/drummer whatever and have an opinion different than yours? No couldn't be that right?
@@vvoof2601 I also like Portnoy but you won't find me professing my eternal devotion to him in the UA-cam comment section.
@@konradverner6326 Good for you.
As a previous owner of "All The Wrong Reasons", yeah...Nickelback sounds great. I got free tickets to one of their shows, and they play great, stage presence, sound, lighting, crowdwork are all top tier. Lyrics are basic as hell, if not terrible. Vocals, while yarl derivitive, are great. Why does Nickelback suck? Because all that is by design. Manufactured. Processed. Simple. Ready made for mass consumption. Nickelback is the McRib of bands.
As for Godsmack, they literally played the next day with Bush, and Godsmack Suuuuuucked. Bush...surprisingly good. Bush Nickelback would be a good tour for the less thinky mob.
I only managed to handle 2-3 minutes of that much envy... Way to make yourself better bruv. By putting town Portnoy lol
I wish they would have gone for a deeper cut. For The River is far more rhythmically exciting and has two Nuno Bettencourt solos.
Yeah but no one ever bothers to look at the deep cuts which tbh a lot the time are better than the 'hit' songs like Shakin hands, the betrayal act 3 etc... I absolutely love Nickelback and do wish they would play some of the deep cuts live rather than the hits but I guess they have to cater for the average listener of the band most of the time
"If Mike Portnoy had mild brain damage, he'd be the perfect drummer for Nickelback" - Mike the music snob 2024
Nickelback's drummer actually plays prog in another band called Martone
Good video Mike 🥂
You can tell whenever Mike has a bit of liquor in him when he starts yelling at people simply conversing 💀
I think the double kick is better than the original. There's just more drive. Simple. It's not a fast double kick or anything crazy, it just gives the song a little more momentum. That's not the part I enjoyed most though.
I liked the syncopated part in the second turnaround of the verse. I liked the half time bit as well just to break things up, you're right though, it comes in prematurely arrangement wise but then, if you were producing this would be pre production since he just made it up on the spot. So no biggy.
I think the double kick would be better following the vocal mellody as an emphasis to the vocal melody🤷♂️
I loooove portnoy … love him .. but you’re also right… 1. Yes the fills .. but also like you said everyone has their ‘bag of tricks’ reference points and what not.
2. This is not on another level and doesn’t raise the song to some untouchable mystique bc he changed up the drums a bit. He played a decent good tack with a little portnoyism on it. .. I mean I love portnoy .. but I’m not drooling over his take on nickelback
WTF?!?!? UA-cam shittery cuz of adblockers is why my internet craps out when I start videos? What the absolute fuck.
NB used to slap. The new stuff BLOWS.
Like others have said, Portnoy is one of the only drummers where I, a non-drummer, can listen to a track and pretty much immediately go "Oh yeah that's Mike Portnoy on drums", for a lot of the reasons you said in the video.
That said, I can't imagine a video like this is easy for him (Or any of the drummers on them) to make. Like you brought up, I'm sure he's *capable* of playing a, let's say, more expected drum part for a Nickelback song--even if he somehow hasn't heard any of their hits, he's aware enough of them to know roughly what that would sound like. But part of the fun of these videos is the incongruity between the drummer and the song, and that had to be at least in the back of Portnoy's mind somewhere as he was writing his take on it.
Mike must be wondering where the other 11 minutes of the song is
What you said about how what he comes up with after one listen vs what he'd write over days, weeks or months for a track are totally different is so true. What I do when my band first presents me with a song is all filler until I have time to properly sit with the song on my own time. Oftentimes I can't play what I write immediately, so I have to learn and drill it over several practices before I get it down solid enough to present to my band.
You're right, he's over powering, the arrangement. Would be interesting to see how the band, would play, off his groove, after a few sets.
People overlook Daniel Adair WAAAY too much! His drum solos live were always so good... the guy has another band Martone where you see some of the stuff he can really do... his idol was always Neil peart and he's an absolute drum nerd he admits that himself, I hope drumeo can get him on one day because I know he'd definitely surprise a hell of a lot of people
"If Mike Portnoy had mild brain damage..." 🤣🤣🤣
Glorious video Mike… and uh Mike 😂
9:42 HELL YES HERES THE DOUBLE KICK 😀😀
old school man! old school! understand this!
4:40 I laughed so hard you nearly had me killed with that.
Not kidding tho, some people just realized that Portnoy plays the same fills all the times. His ideas and presence are the key to DT, but he's not really technically advanced. JP and JR made him sound godly tbh.
i suggest turnnin' off Ambient Mode and it did helped it run better for me at least but Mike Portnoy's take imo is better
I'm really glad to see you enjoying whisky again! I don't get the hate for Nickelback though. They are just a great rock band and nothing more.
