Wow….that was a powerful scene. You could feel Mike’s love for his mother-in-law; you could feel Edith’s grief and feeling lost. Mike had some powerful words as an atheist. Archie, for his part, displayed his desire to give thanks to the Lord even though he wasn’t very eloquent. A very moving scene ❤️
It was so beautiful, yet so many decades ahead of it’s time. And then the Jeffersons had Georges friend who had gender reassignment, again so far ahead of it’s time, especially when now in 2024, so many still refuse to accept those who are different.
Mike was so gentle and caring with Edith. It's a shame the powers-that-be had to break the Stivics up. He loved Edith like she was his mother, not just an in-law.
Absolutely! Having Mike leave Gloria to join a commune was just nuts and undermined all the growth in their relationship up to that point. It would have been better for him to die at a protest rally or even from illness. That would've left the love and trust intact and made Gloria a better spinoff.
Edith wasn’t just his mother in law she was his mother . He respected and loved her . He lost his parents early. He understood her in a way Archie and Gloria didn’t . He didn’t take her for granted.
I don't know how Rob Reiner got through that scene without crying. Playing against a character like Edith Bunker, portrayed expertly by Jean Stapleton, I'd have been crying gallons getting through my lines.
As much as I sometimes don't like Mike Stivic I do like him in this scene. His words were so right. God doesn't expect us to understand everything. He wants us to trust Him to do what's best for us even if we don't understand. Mike understood more about God than he thought he did. And I also hated algebra!
I feel like I'm watching a Broadway play by Arthur Miller or William Inge when I see that scene. Should be shown to acting classes. Absolutely superb work by all, especially Jean Stapledon and Rob Reiner.
I’m talking about Rob Reiner as an actor. Some fans of the show have underestimated his importance to this series, which is the definition of underrated. So yes, it means exactly what I think it does.
@@jaredjlindenYou are right. He was great as Mike. I think the only thing I read about him in these comment sections is the turned old " once a meathead always a meathead,"or something similar. Or criticism about his politics. So boring. These people always say the same thing..Which by the way is not true. He is a great person and an important activist. 4:29
This was fine acting, but they made it seem real. Beverly's tragic death storyline was very powerful & significant, compliments of the late Norman Lear.
We're allowed to be mad at God. I was, after the suicide death of my best friend. It took me decades to come to terms with it, and in the end it was a stroke on the anniversary of his death. I'm finally at peace now and look forward to seeing him in Eternity. Love you David! See you in Eternity!

The second half of the series was not as strong as the first half, but this episode, as well as and "Draft Dodger" and "Shoebooty" ones, were masterpieces.
It was cute when it was Archie Bunker's Place but nothing will ever compare to these four actors and these four characters. It did not matter what pairing you did, they nailed it, each and every time.
Mike was right on. We can not understand why God sllows things to happen in our lives. We have to just keep faith in him & trust him. Good analogy using education. In school, some class lessons we had were tough, but we never stopped learning!!
This moment illustrates how foolish the whole Mike joins a commune and ditches his family storyline was absolutely nonsense. Mike lived all 3 of them, and he even went to bat for Archie when he forged her signature to buy Kelsey's. People do change and I could see a divorce, but what they wrote for him was nonsense.
Mike is so nice to talk to Edith like this. But I don't blame her for feeling this way, if I Edith I would sit in the kitchen and eat my dinner in there.

I want a lady who looks Gloria instead.

The whole Beverly LaSalle story line was amazing for the 1970's.
Agreed. This final episode with that character is historical. Her friendship with Edith was pure love.

@@pixel9548I agree and it's a shame how even Archie had grown to respect and love Mike as his daughters husband & grandsons father
For what it's worth, I think lots of people took issue with that decision, so we aren't alone at least.
The reason that happened was due to Rob not wanting to return to the role of Mike when he and Sally were asked back in 1982.
Add this is why this show is remembered today.
