Did I do something wrong by tinkering with the registry of the game and enabling Dead on Arrival without playing the others first? I didn't had the time to play it again and again as I was in a somewhat dark and hectic time of my life as well. I don't think so. Coz I wouldn't have been able to bear Mona's death in the easy playthrough. I actually felt a sense of connection with Mona herself. I think one thing I like so much about Max Payne's character is that he should have died so many times, even wants to die at times, but there is something driving him that just will not let him. Sort of like a boxer that's been beaten to a pulp, but just will not stop getting up again and again. The bandaged, bloody state he's in at the end of Max Payne 2 says it all.

Max Payne has literally never been uninstalled from my computer since I installed it when it first came out. It’s a classic that went beyond being underrated and still is. The story, the music, the gameplay and the bullet time! I still play it and can play it over and over again. I’d love to see a Unreal Engine Max Payne redo with current 4K graphics! I’d donate to that.
That game is a true masterpiece, it holds my admiration even today 16 years later, him wandering like an ignorant child who fell for Mona Sax, and being blind that Vlad has been trying to kill him all along
As a kid that replayed Max Payne 2 over twenty times on my cousin's PC in 2004 I agree with this video and its entirety. Despite not experiencing Max Payne 1 before playing its sequel; I could still feel and sense the dark and rich tone this game had. I love it and still see it as one of the best noir style games of all time. As for Max Payne 1, I love its origin and wilder aspects for comparison as well. However, Max Payne 2 has something I still hold to this day; both are fantastic titles and truly worthy of Remedy's best products.
Mr Ojo64 i didnt use guns in hitman expect the final mission at the church in hitman 2 and the funeral in blood money. Its a pure stealth franchise for me i wouldnt call them shooters either.
I love the MP games so much. I used to have a saved game in MP2 (or 1, I can't remember) where a bunch of Bad Guys are climbing a stairwell. I would bullet time down those steps guns blazing and it was just pure violent beauty. What's best is that due to the physics engine, debris would fall in random patterns, or the bad guys might react in a different way, so every scene on those steps would play out slightly differently, every time.
There was a quote towards the end of this video that gave me chills when I heard it: "From the opening cutscene, The Fall of Max Payne is about the past. How running from it only allows it to consume you and that the only true way to overcome it, is to confront it; to risk the damage and madness that comes from facing it until you're truly set free." The reason being is this is also a perfect summary of Cowboy Bebop, possibly my favorite TV show ever. I played the first two Max Payne games for the first time recently and loved them both but especially The Fall of Max Payne, now it makes perfect sense to me why I like the story so much, so thanks for that.

The outro song 'Late Goodbye' by Poets of the Fall is something I hoped you would have touched on, I felt it capped the game really well and added a good emotional through line, since the song mirrors Max in his thoughts and problems. Almost like it was his late goodbye.
Remedy's games just have this dark and quiet feel that I dont think another studio can reproduce. Its very clear in Max Payne and I was really happy that Control had it too.
I remember the alternate ending vividly, and was appreciative of it- it felt like waking up. I believe you had to beat the game before you could do the higher difficulty, so you had already experienced the tragedy, and having your anticipation subverted was welcome when you were primed for unremitting loss.
What a beautiful video! I dunno why, but the main theme of MP2 gets me paranoic and causes fear, lol. MP1 gave me trauma... in that hotel. In the confrotation with that russian demoniac guy. (I was 11 at the time) I wish I had the ability to write a script perfectly just like you do. Congrats, sir. Greetings from Brazil!
Very well put together video, kudos. This game captivated me, and I still find myself posting Payne 2 quotes on my social media platforms. The noir setting really resonated with me and this game was the full package - action, story, and adventure.
This is my favorite MP title, and I thank you for the justice you brought to it in this video. While most people I know despise MP2 for the story, I absolutely adored it and was completely immersed by act 3, losing an entire night until I completed the game. Just like in the game, it was raining outside and once "Late Goodbye" kicked in, I couldn't hold back the tears streaking my face. It was exhilarating ride, and a far more personal story than I ever thought I would get. I agree 100% on "Duty VS Passion" being the best track on the score; so much is conveyed in that track that cannot be explained unless you're actually playing the game. Great review!
People despise MP2 for the story? For real? I have trouble wrapping my head around it, tbh. This game has (for me) the most emotionally impactful plot of all videogames that I played, it even helped me discover the film noir genre, so to this day I watch and re-watch every noir or ne-noir style film from 1940s onward to get that almost cathartic set of emotions MP2 once provided for me.
Same here. There used to be a time that I would make it a tradition to re-install MP2 every Thanksgiving Day weekend and play the game again. 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and it must have tapered off sometime after that. I would, however, say my favorite track is the one that you here when Max is going down the elevator and finds Winterson arresting Mona. The few seconds in the beginning convey an unnerving, palpable build-up and tension.
The game hooked me, dragged me into it's world. Max Payne 1 was a single piece of bait put on a hook and line. Max Payne 2 was bigger bait, and more hooks. Both times I took the bait. both times I couldn't stop until the playthrough was done. And now all that's left is Max Payne 3. It's kinda funny, how the lineup room only has slots for 3 people. As if it was fated Max Payne would have a trilogy.
One of my favourite games ever. I have played through Max Payne 2 countless times and it always feels good. The music alone gives me chills and good memories that flood back everytime I decide to replay it.
Let's not forget the incredible end song, 'Late Goodbye' by Poets of the Fall. Absolutely beautiful tune, and a more than fitting accompaniment to the end credits of an equally moving game.
One of my favourite games of all time! Love the analysis. I agree 2 is not so difficult, unless you play on "dead on arrival", but i prefer it to 1 in every single way. The music, the setting, the desperation, falling down in to the rabbit hole, refine gameplay, etc.. I never played 3, but i know i will not like it as much as 1 and 2. There some interviews given by Remedy hints that they don't like the direction of 3 or at least sounds like that. I wish i'm that well spoken :D My favourite quote from the game: "Max, dearest of all my friends. I was supposed to be the hero". The last words of Vlad.
not really, MP3 is considered to be a worthy sequel by remedy afaik, Sam Lake is on board for helping the Houser's make the story. but i get your point. MP3 doesn't feels like a Max Payne game, it feels like a generic TPS with Max in it

Being heartbroken atm and loving noir storytelling and videogames/shooters in general, I played Max Payne 1&2 just now in 2018 for the first time and I have to say these 2 games are some of the best ever created.
I talked to Sam Lake in a christmas party last year and tried to drunkenly grill him on the subject of Max Payne 3's writing, and surprisingly enough he did give some solid answers. He refused to comment on the quality of Houser's writing of the game's story, but he did give me a startling revelation that demonstrated Rockstar's ignorance of the game's style and theme in regards to storytelling. According to Sam, Houser and the rest of the writing team behind Max Payne 3 had *entirely* *forgotten* *Max's* *inner* *monologue.* Rockstar actually got Sam to fill in the blanks they left with genuine Max monologue in appropriate scenes. Without his involvement, it would have been an entirely different type of narrative, and I doubt the players could have related as well to Max without being able to read his thoughts.

Max Payne 2 is one of my top 10 games of all time. The story, the gameplay, the feeling I get when I play that game...just nothing like it. By the way, is there a chance you could do one video for Operation Flashpoint? Also a game from my childhood and my country. Grew up with all the cool characters, enjoyed the grim reality of cold war combat and never managed to get how the hell to properly use the AI controls.
Max Payne 2 was oje of my favorite games, and in retrospect, is an underappreciated masterpiece. Its sad to think of where 3 was taken.... i mean tirning it into a coverbased shooter kills the fundementals of max Payne gameplay :(
Dude, great video!! You reminded me playing this Max Payne 2 port on my oldie PS2, good memories though. Nice quality, nice narrative, thank you kind sir for your upload.
Was wondering if there will be a third video for the final game in the series, but would probably be a no since its still too soon... ...until I noticed it got released 5 years ago.Damn does time sure fly.
Who remembers the Max Payne kung fu mod? That was so freaking cool. Also, I wonder why people didn't think Max Payne 3's theme was appropriate... if MP1 was the Winter of Max Payne, MP2 was the Fall, then MP3 had to be the hot sweaty Summer of Max Payne - where in the grungy ghettos and jungles of Brazil, it still conveyed the appropriate amount of noir. I hope we see the Spring of Max Payne out soon.

I remember the alternate ending vividly, and was appreciative of it- it felt like waking up. I believe you had to beat the game before you could do the higher difficulty, so you had already experienced the tragedy, and having your anticipation subverted was welcome when you were primed for unremitting loss.
I never knew I could move so fast in bullet time so I played this game exactly like I did for max payne 1, shoot dodging my way through
My favorite of the series.
A Raycevick and GVMERS video in one day? FUCK YEAH!
Who is gvmers?
gvmaers is underrated
Mandalore gaming is another underrated gaming channel
thnx to u people i got 2 more awesome channels to kill time..u can also suggest more if u know any
Dead baite he has great stuff aswell
'Bang, your dead Max Payne!' Lol I always loved that line.
I just finished this game for the first time today and I look into my UA-cam feed and see this.
the hands of fate had a plan for you
Everyones been naming there videios years later after u raycevick.u started a trend
U mean me lol
English isn't required to make a comment, but effort in the spelling is.
U mean me and DT lol.
Hi whitelight! also Ray popularized it u just started it
People have been using “Years Later” for many games for several years already. Raycevick just made it more trendy
I swear your videos only get better as time goes on I even rewatch these sometimes cause of the loads of information. Keep it up dude.
What a beautiful video!
I dunno why, but the main theme of MP2 gets me paranoic and causes fear, lol.
MP1 gave me trauma... in that hotel. In the confrotation with that russian demoniac guy. (I was 11 at the time)
I wish I had the ability to write a script perfectly just like you do. Congrats, sir.
Greetings from Brazil!
TheSilentEvil agreed I will never forget I have tasted the flesh of fallen angels creepy but awesome.
I've been saying it for years. Only 3 games moved me to tears. FF7, Max Payne 2, and Jade Empire.
As if it was fated Max Payne would have a trilogy.
yes daddy please more
Damn
One of my favourite games ever. I have played through Max Payne 2 countless times and it always feels good. The music alone gives me chills and good memories that flood back everytime I decide to replay it.
I have a big test tomorrow, but meh who cares. This video better be good tho.
MP3 doesn't feels like a Max Payne game, it feels like a generic TPS with Max in it
@@caro1015 They probably should've went with the initial setting in Russia instead of Brazil. A much more fitting location for a somber character like Max
@@caro1015
Max Payne 3 on pc is the greatest 3rd person shooter of all time. The combat, gunplay and physics are unmatched to this day.
@@caro1015
Yes, Max Payne 3 is different than the previous games, but that doesn't mean it's bad or generic .
@@olzhas1one755I feel like most people who dislike MP 3 only dislike it for having a different atmosphere than the first two games and ignore everything good about that game . They are so biased .
I can't thank you enough for this video, man. It is THE ultimate Max Payne 2 video I've been looking for.
I hope you can do Alan Wake then Quantum Break.
As someone that want's to become a video game desygner in the future, you videos are great. Not only are they good to watch, they also give me a lot of things to look out for when making then. Keep your good work.
I played this game when I was 14. It changed me. The first time I cried after playing a videogame - later to cry in Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed Revelations.
Every video you release is so comprehensive and tightly shipped. Thorough, positive and negative aspects of each title, analysing creative, mechanics, designs, production etc etc... say it with every video I see you've released - best Game Review channel on YT. Keep it up Rayceboi
Maxs lust for Mona is unexplained to me.
How the heck this happened
I still install this game yearly, and play through the story a few times with any of the new mods that have came out - or old ones that I am fond of. There is never a bad time in sight when your running cinematic mod, mowing down mobsters in glorious slow mo with the action music backdrop.
This game was brilliant. Holy shit I did many playthroughs in the end just for research.
Being heartbroken atm and loving noir storytelling and videogames/shooters in general, I played Max Payne 1&2 just now in 2018 for the first time and I have to say these 2 games are some of the best ever created.
"yet they were seduced..." shows video of Mona in the shower... cheeky editing there friendo! lol
Hehe mona arse
Thanks for putting this out. I love the old Max Payne games and they never seem to get talked about today. Great video
This video makes me want to play Max Payne 2 again
Excellent work as always Lucas. I'm hoping there's a video coming for Max Payne 3. I can't get enough of this series.
I highly doubt they could forget the inner monologue. It's what the Max Payne stories are based around.
Plutonia Na Rockstar are usual smart with its writing so i call bullshit.
+Eric Nick
Rockstars writing been utter shit since after max payne 2 and gta vice city times and only goten worse over time
Insiainutorr T Uh no not by a long shot.
I could believe it, but pics or it didn't happen
I love how many good video game channels there are right now. You, joseph andersson, matthew matosis, super bunnyhop, ragnarrox, ahoy..... sooo much to watch
I would love a metro critique series.
You are absolutely amazing at making videos, i have just watched every single one back to back! awesome work!
I loved this game. The noir atmosphere is just perfect!
This is becoming one of my favorite channels, keep it up!
The good old times when we thought computer games would only get better with time.
Not consistently, but they did.
Man, I am quite glad that you did this. Some good memories of 2003 autumn/winter. Remember when i saw MP2 at the market and didnt buy it instantly when i could, but returned 1-2 weeks later and bought it automatically and then - over and over again playing this masterpiece sequel.
Great video as always my friend. Quick Question, do you think you will do a video on Assassin's Creed at all?
I just watched two of your videos and now I feel the need to watch all of them just to listen to your godlike voice.
The moment in your life when you realize you have played max payne 2 without ever knowing about bullet time function. 🤔😣
yay, this got made! this was my childhood, i remember all those hours i spent on it like it was yesterday
I love the structure of this video. It feels like how a review should be. You (in my book) are the text book example of a review.
Max Payne 2 was oje of my favorite games, and in retrospect, is an underappreciated masterpiece.
Its sad to think of where 3 was taken.... i mean tirning it into a coverbased shooter kills the fundementals of max Payne gameplay :(
You just need to be good at it I completed it two times on ps3 and used the cover mechanic barely 30 times unless I was in extremely tight situation
I hope we see the Spring of Max Payne out soon.
good point 👍👍.
Modern gamers: The last of us is the best and the most emotional video game story ever!
Max Payne 2: I wanted modern gamers to hold my painkiller bottle.
Silent Hill 2: Hold my wife's letter.
Max Payne: Painkillers and beretta
Love to see people still talk about max payne I thought I was one of the few that held it so highly.
