While maybe not my favorite of the trilogy, I'll always hold this game near and dear to my heart mainly for the atmosphere + soundtrack + gore. Some levels felt truly grim and brutal and Health (the band) just killed it with the music. Love these games so much.
I think one of the best things Max Payne 3 did was give you no subtitles if people used Portuguese around Max due to his lack of understanding the language. Really gave you that fish out of water feeling every time it happens.
Yeah, it's actually pretty funny if you can understand what they say, I understand the 3 languages and it's beautiful lol. Even though Panamanians actually speak like Colombians or something, that's pretty common on games and movies unfortunately.
yeah, being a Brazilian, it was bot confusing. we laughed so hard, because it is full of stereotypes; the curse words, the slums, the pronunciation of Brazilian names, it treats brazil like there is a burglar/drug dealer/dangerous junkie on every corner. but I still love it
@@pedrotobias9462 That's very much a Max Payne thing. The first 2 games depict New York as a "hive of scum and villainy" pretty much. XD Everything is terrible in the Payne-o-verse
I've actually replayed Max Payne 3 more than most other games I own. Yes, the cutscene-loading is a drag but especially on a mouse the shooting in this game feels unlike any other game. It's insanely satisfying. One thing that wasn't mentioned in this video is the game's New York Minute mode, which puts a time pressure that makes the gameplay as fast and brutal as it should be. Memorizing enemy locations and timing doesn't sound particularly fun, but when running through a level like a god it's worth it. All the critiques in this video are totally valid, but that hasn't stopped me from coming back over and over again.
Jacob Geller Id say the game wasn't meant for New York minute at all , chapter 3 jump in both difficulty and in how much walking you have to do and then the other levels are much easier is incredibly unbalanced
I do really enjoy New York Minute mode. It really puts your reflexes to the test while ensuring you keep moving. But just... f*ck the police station shootout. Seriously, in my entire playthrough of NYM, that one level was the absolute bane of my existence. Even the final level, the airport, was nowhere near as tedious and difficult as the police station was. I had to restart and try again on that one level alone more times then any other level in the campaign combined. I don't know why. But it took me numerous upon numerous attempts before I finally beat that level and gain the plat medal on it. Granted, playing through NYM pretty much made me a master of getting headshots in a rapid succession, but I ain't never playing that mode again on that level. Besides that one level, the entire game was fantastic. While the story was no-where near as fantastic or compelling as the combined story of MP 1 and 2, the gameplay easily picks up the slack that was MP 2's gameplay. I'm sorry, but I really didn't like the way they handled Max's slo-mo in MP 2. Turning what used to be quick and dirty leaps of faith into a direction and getting those precious headshots was now replaced with a goddamn super-power that the player can abuse to wipe out entire rooms of enemies before they even get a chance to raise their weapons in response. Rockstar made the right choice to go back to the way MP 1 handled it. Having the slo-mo ability be more of an extension of, Max's reflexes, not a super-power. But man, when they were developing MP 2, someone sure did love the shit out of the Matrix, I can tell you that much. Regardless, MP 3 was fantastic. Yeah, the story might not have been as compelling or as deep as the first two games were, but that's not terrible. It's a shame, yeah, but I enjoyed the gameplay far too much to mind the lack of metaphors or philosophy.
Really glad to hear James McCaffrey personally requested to play Max again for 3. I genuinely believe that MP3 is his best role. Not standing inside a booth and talking like in 1 and 2, and instead being given full range to act with his body and movements, allowed McCaffrey to fully embody Max in 3, and gave out probably one of the most memorable performances in video games IMO
I like both Max's - the monotone, quiet performance of the first game (not a fan of MP2) makes me appreciate James getting to fully act out in 3, and James' acting in the 3rd game makes me appreciate his quiet, chilling and haunting voicework in the first game that cements its noir atmosphere. Honestly, I love Max Payne 1 and Max Payne 3 in their own respective ways, but I think we can all agree James MADE the character of Max Payne.
@@teslasharkyou mean audition? I never heard Ned Luke as Max Payne or even considering him as max payne, unless it’s like a Samuel Jackson and Tarantino type thing were Ned was looking to play as Max then someone at rockstar said “naw I have a character being written for you” Sam asked if he can play the Holdaway character in reservoir dogs but Tarantino said he was already writing a character for him being Jules in pulp fiction.
The pills will hold the pain back for a while. They're all dead the final gunshot was a exclamation mark that led every lead to this point I released my finger from the trigger and then it was all over.
I loved the linearity of Max Payne 3. A refreshing change of pace from the ubiquitous open world, empty map, fetch-quest laden style of games saturating the market these days
What?iT'S NOT as if there are no linear games, and this game is not just linear, it's a sequence of 2 minute chunks you teleport between, and it has fucking collectibles. Games don't have to be open-world.
This game's linearity definitely makes first playthroughs feel amazing, at the cost of future ones being much less cool. I do wish the game had environments that were a bit more open and dynamic, but this game is pretty awesome.
Tom Knoll the game definitely loses its touch on the second play through. I did notice that, at least on PC, the only cutscenes that can’t be skipped were the ones covering up loading screens. It is annoying to have to watch the same scenes over and over on another play through for sure, though.
@@Chewberto The game pretends that it's loading, but it's not true. You can tell by simply selecting the individual stages in "challenge mode" or whatever it is called, the one with the countdown where have to progess as fast as possible. Suddenly, the levels load up almost immediately. Also, it just makes no sense that after 6 years, the loading progress of a 2013-game would sometimes take several MINUTES to load linear stages. Just compare it to the loading times on GTA 5 or the likes; it's so much quicker. For some reason, they want you to "experience" the story completely every time, ignoring the fact that when playing the game a second time you don't want to watch all of it again.
Nobody wanted a sequel. But we got it. Nobody wanted a third part. But we got it. Everybody wants the fourth part. We will never get it. Edit: I came back to this comment about a year later and I see that a lot of people misunderstood me. By 'Fourth Part', I didn't mean a sequel to 3. I meant something like a prequel, set between 2 and 3 or even before 1.
Good thing too. Max Payne 2 to me was the end of the story, and Max Payne 3 was the end of the character, putting up a Max Payne 4 would be just pushing it
I have this crazy idea for a Max Payne soft reboot, where his daughter survives the home invasion and grows up to be an FBI agent. The events of the previous three games still occur in a fairly similar fashion, but the plot I’ve concocted is more of a continuation of the Valkyr case from the first game with elements from the sequels to bring the story full circle. ;-)
@DChief94 Max Payne is a series about one man gunning down an entire army of criminals, drug junkies and private military with a huge arsenal of weapons. Nothing about that is realistic and Max Payne 3 is no exception.
Max Payne 3 is one of those games that I acknowledge the problems with it, hell this video pointed out some that I had never noticed. But I can't deny that I love this game. It is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time.
@@axelnoir3716 "This place was like Baghdad with G-strings" ...that doesn't even make sense in the context of the situation, let alone capture the feelings and power of the best lines of the first two games
One of my favorite games of all time. 7 years later, I still play it on my PC. Still looks rock solid and the shooting mechanics are some of the best I’ve ever played. So fun.
"The thugs were giving them a run for their money , that's what happens when you give a roided half wit a commando uniform with Special written on it . Sooner or later somebody's gotta decide that's he's not so special "
@@TheMasterUnity yeah your right but in other countries like in Mexico they're like that and I can tell you that the cops are armed with military grade gear and wear lots of armor like UFE since the cartel is one of the main threats in Mexico
max payne 3 is probably one of the most underrated games of all time. the noir, the setting, the action, it was such a fun and realistic game. i loved the rio setting, the slums and everything were so realistic. it feels like john wick mixed with james woo tbh.
I love it. But, the story definitely is *heavily* based on Man On Fire. Give it a watch and youll know exactly what I mean. It even has the camera flashes and text showing important dialogue. Plus, Man On Fire has the exact same plot, man is hired to protect a family in South America, and spends the entire time collapsing into hard alcoholism and drug use while desperately trying to save who is left.
@@DisDatK9 Very true. I don't find that to be a bad thing. I just love the way they tell the narrative in this game. They do a great job of Max's internal dialogue and demons which to me makes this story told very well, even if it is one that treads common grounds.
i love how max actually expresses emotion in this game instead of just grumbling in flat monotone the whole time like in the first two. seeing him try to blend in with ordinary people in awkward social situations really makes him feel sad and pathetic.
That had mostly to do with the noir setting. The problem however, is while such emotion would normally fit with the trauma Max faces in the first two, it doesn't ring true in 3. We leave him in 2, finally at peace, but then in 3 he's a depressed washed out addict? Where every line is him whining about something? It's like Rockstar didn't even bother understanding the character, and instead, just ran with the dev notes that he's seen some shit, and swallows painkillers like candy. In the first two, the player saw Max as a sympathetic badass - in 3, you just wished he'd quit his incessant bitching.
@@digitalutopia1 How did you both simultaneously manage to speak the truth and sound like something Max would say? Sounding so truthful yet sarcastic. "It's like Rockstar didn't even bother understanding the character and instead just ran with the dev notes that he's seen some shit and swallowed painkillers like candy."
@@PokemonProfessorNebula Honestly, not intentional - but since you mentioned it: Green light washed the lies away. Brazil sunshine on my hairless head. Flashy text across the screen, my dialogue reduced to self-pity. I was in a Rockstar game. Funny as Hell, it was the most horrible thing I could think of.
Max Payne 3 was a work of art. The way the character progressed from bad to worse, you could see it in his gate, his clothes, face. I have not felt as invested in a character before nor after max payne 3. The combat, animations, voice acting is top notch
Yes and the game deserved the critical acclaim. It's aesthetics are light years ahead of the first two games. I think the only thing I miss from the first two games is the writing and the film noir presentation. Apart from this max payne 3 is the superior game.
Mr. SkarKasm good ratings, tons of hate from users, much like far cry 2 and gta4. Glad to see people starting to appreciate these games. reminds me of halo. it was so overhyped that I was burned about long before playing, but years later I was able to see the appeal.
As a brazilian, playing this game was very fun to see how Rockstar depicted Brazilian favela and the characters, mixing some tropes with references from City of God and Elite Squad (It's actually ironic that both movies are set in Rio de Janeiro, not São Paulo). Also, it's one of the best action games I've ever played. Tottaly worth the buy
As weird as I sound: MP3 was one of the most emotional games I've ever played. I literally got goosebumps when that last scene with Max in a bar kicked in;walking towards the sunset with Tears playing in the background..no game gave me an experience as cinematic and mature as this one. Thank you Rockstar.
The airport shootout with Tears playing in the background will always be one of the most epic atmospheric and nostalgic moments of any game I've ever played. The finally piano playing completing Max's dirge and bringing about a twisted kind of harmony, his acceptance at the end of what he's become and where it's all lead. You can say what you want but to me, this game was amazing.
I binge played Max Payne, and the airport song, just gave me chills, like I was charged and I just want Max to survive and ride off to the sunset. It makes me angry that people don't appreciate the details in these games!
I think it is mostly because of the GTA V anxiety back then. People were expecting a lot of info regarding the game. But yeah, back then I always insisted that MP3 would be an awesome game, and it were. I loved it.
The first time I played through this game, I really couldn't stand Max's moping and whining and biting sarcasm. This was also the first and only Max Payne game that I have actually played. The second time I played through it, though, I was dealing with depression, and that completely changed the way that I understood and interpreted Max as he's written in this one. I was able to relate to his nihilism and cynicism throughout the story, his questioning of why he's going through so much trouble for something that really doesn't seem that important to him in the moment. It was really interesting that I was now able to understand Max's point of view, and it really changed my enjoyment of the game as a whole.
Same here bro. At the first run was a nice and cool shooting game from rockstar. Then I replayed the game at a dark moment of my life and made me felt in Max flesh
That Airport level is unforgettable. A game that genuinely makes you feel like a badass is amazing. Like, you just felt the intensity and determination right there with Max. Especially when you played on higher difficulties.
I remember being so hyped in middle school that it was finally coming out. I loved it, multiplayer too. I had two other friends who got on it and we had a blast. Made 8th grade one of my better years in life. I'm going to replay it soon and maybe replay the original two as well.
@@juanrocha251 That's nothing. Where I live, every Movie Rental Store had all of the DVDs burned. And they also rented/sold Burned PS2 Games (because every kid had a Mod-chipped PS2 in my country).
It was received *extremely poorly* by most fans of the first 2 games, though. Mostly because neither the character, nor the setting or the story felt like "Max Payne'" at all. I get that Rockstar wanted to steer the franchise into a new direction - and I generally love new things - but Max Payne isn't a nihilistic, constantly swearing idiot, he is a snarky, sarcastic smart-ass who waxes poetically. And while favelas make for an interesting setting, they never feel like a "main character on their own" like "Noir York City" did in the first 2 games. Add to that Max running around bold, with a full beard and a hawaii shirt and you can see why this game didn't exactly scream "Max Payne" to most fans.
Nr4747 I've been the entire series every game from day 1 and I had no problems with 3 whatsoever. Sure maybe I would've preferred it to be set in NYC but other than I fkn loved it.
Honestly, it was the worst paced thing I have ever engaged with on any level, it didn't let you play, but forced you into a walk and a cut scene ever 2-3 minutes to watch an incredibly dull, stupid and generic story that directly contradicted the gameplay, switched your weapons around, and treated you like an absolute idiot. The gunplay was great, that's it.
That was awesome! I love Max Payne and went to Rockstar only so i could work on the third one. Your video was spot on describing the failures and the successes of the game. In the end I loved the game, but was completely aware of the issues it had. I really appreciate the work you put into this review and the whole series, it just makes me so happy to see someone care enough to go through the game and dissect it to the level you did. the final few lines of your video almost, and i mean it, almost made me cry. It reminds me how much i miss rockstar vancouver and the people there. Thank you so much for making this! Ill be sure to pass this video on to my friends that helped make it.
Forgot Rockstar Vancouver was a thing. Such a shame it closed, you guys did a great job on this game. Vancouver and Toronto studios, very canadian game, eh?
I know it's been 4 years since you posted this comment but I just wanted to thank you and Rockstar Vancouver for contributing to the creation of this gorgeous game this game has a special place in my heart and I'll never get bored playing it. Although I am sorry about the extremely harsh and terrible work environment you had to deal with people in any work environment should never have to endure what you guys have when creating this game.
Being a brazilian that lives in São Paulo (where the game takes place) makes this masterpiece even more intimal and amazing to me. The banter between goons that you guys can't understand (like Max also cant) is so amazingly well crafted and believable, and all the details from the city are so well done ... One of my favorite games of all time. Thank you so much, R*
Gustavo Lima The rendition of São Paulo is probably one of the strongest settings of any game ever, the detail is insaneeee. And I love that you touched on the banter which was always one of my favorite aspects of the game. I don’t speak Portuguese so it just helped drive home Max’s alienation and I thought it was a great kind of counterpoint to the original games - the bad guys still banter with each other but they might as well be speaking Martian as far as Max is concerned, but ultimately Max silences the cacophony no matter what language they’re speaking.
The banter has some really bad voice actors, and most of Brazilian speaking characters are bad too, most people who dont speak portuguese cant or dont really notices that. I think its better enjoyed without really knowing what are they talking about.
the portuguese doesn't really feel like it's being spoken by a native brazilian, but maybe that's just me. I feel like the game that did this best was STALKER, the NPCs usually spoke in Ukranian to each other, but they did speak English directly to the player. Near the guard outpost at the start of the game, the ukranian colonel spoke via a speaker about the dangers of the zone and so on in English, but when you started a firefight with the military, he would start shouting orders in Ukranian, which felt a lot more realistic. Of course, I don't know if the Ukranian he spoke was actually accurate or not, or if it was Russian instead of Ukranian, but it felt immersive at least
Exactly, most of the game voice actors are not brazilians, they just speak portuguese, and some are not real voice actors, Serrano is voiced by a nigerian, Becker voice actor is a narrator, so he dont show emotions on the dub.
Yeah like some people pointed out the banter feels somewhat sterile - they speak pretty much formal portuguese, without any slangs, which is uncharacteristic of whom they're trying to portray (favela gang members).
Max Payne 3 is a gritty, brilliant game, and one of the absolute best depictions of PTSD. It's an engaging and surprisingly intimate nightmare -- one of the best games I've ever played.
(my english is rusty, so please understand) When Max enters the favela the rap song that play is fantastic. As a brazilian, the game pleases me with the enviroment, soundtrack and voice acting (even being a little inacurate with the brazilian portuguese accent). I know that purists fans doesn't like this game, but for me it was so memorable and awesome that it's one of the best games I ever played. Max is such a badass with a sad lore, a great character.
I still remember being at the midnight release. A few minutes before midnight, everyone lines up outside and I was near the front but also the only person there for Max Payne 3? I remember someone said aloud just before they opened the door, " I feel bad for Max Payne." See, Diablo 3 also came out that day. The funny thing is, Max Payne 3 worked on release, Diablo 3 didn't. I got the last laugh. Sorry loud Diablo fan. (Diablo 3 was good)
I was also the only one there at midnight for MP3 when everyone else got Diablo. I love all 3 games so much but probably 2 hit me the hardest. Still like that poets of the fall song.
These are the days I'm glad I don't have the attention span for games like that. Good for you if you love it, but I prefer my RPG-style gameplay to be a bit more: direct, to the point and interactive (with as little beat-around-the-bush tedium as possible). I guess that's why I never played Final Fantasy 10 beyond the first 30 minutes.
I was one off the crazy Diablo fan for years, Diablo 3 was disgusting and bad. Max Payne 3 was amazing. But sadly, both off them died now... No one laughs, just pain.
"(Diablo 3 was good)" lol no, it wasn't. even after the final patch of the basic game it was still okay at best. the game only redeemed itself after RoS released and the seasons started.
I disagree with the movement part. I think it was a perfect balance of realistic animations and player control , while maintaining a sense of fluidity.
As someone who's played MP3s online a lot i can tell you there was very little control given, to the point that you would move left when wanting to move right while aimed in.
I agree, Max felt agile yet beefy. It never felt like I was getting caught on objects or bouncing off walls because of Max's movement, more so that I just didnt look before I leaped. That being said, in Max Payne MP the movement didn't feel great. Sometimes strafing forwards or backwards despite flicking the stick to the left or right. Sometimes it felt entirely unresponsive if you chose to dive and (after landing) try to get back up from the floor. I think most of it was down to the multiplayer character model hitboxes though as Max always felt really solid and responsive.
Regarding movement: I actually enjoy how Max Payne 3 weights his movements and limts the transitions. like how he has to physically have his arms forward with the weapon to be able to shoot forward. And how he actually has to finish his step to the right before going forward and so on. It feels real. I always thought it broke immersion when most games, when you aim, your arms and body INSTANTLY promps you forward where you're pointing at, as if you were The Flash. On Max Payne 3, his body feels connected to the world and follows the laws of how a bone structure should work and how fast you should be moving, it feels incredibly good. To this day, I have not experience this on any other game, other than GTA V, but very slightly. I hope Red Dead Redemption 2 follow this heavy mechanic. The weight of the body and the limits of movement immerse me more than any well-voice cinematic. Most games feels like you're controlling a hollow character made out of feather and everything is floaty and unrealistically fast.
"Control should be prioritized over immersion" And a year down the road, Rockstar's latest venture with Red Dead Redemption 2 makes this quote all the more important. Having the game stop you for up to 20 seconds at a time to watch the same animations play out over and over again might be immersive, but takes so much control away from the players and just wears you down after a while. While there's a great game in RDR2, there's also a lot of tedium that you have to put up with to see its conclusion.
Luckily the story and dialogue of RDR2 was so convicting and phenomenal it was rather easy to overlook that level of too much immersion. Good luck getting by with a subpar story with that amount if tedious animations
i am the opposite. If its a grand immersive game like red dead then i love the slower, more realistic animations and gameplay. I had no problen whatsoever
I never even completed the first game, so the second one never attracted me. I played it on both the X360 and PS3 at a friend's house back in the day (and I loved it), but I'm still very bitter about the fact that they outright confirmed that it's never going to get a PC port simply because of a piracy risk.
A lot of people feel this way and I'm here, on my second playthrough, taking my time like I've never done for any other game. The slow movements, the weight and realism of everything is what makes RDR2 so special to me and one of the best game I have ever played. I find it quite strange when people are comparing it with The Witcher 3 (which is also an amazing game) when the latter lacks responsivness in its controls and has very clunckly gameplay, especially the horse (good lord are the controls bad for Roach).
Max Payne 3 was the first Max Payne I played and I played it after GTA V came out. I was 16 at the time and just thought he was the coolest "action hero" character I've ever seen. As I am at only 26 now after completing a 5 year enlistment in the Marines, been halfway around the world, shot at, lost close friends all while I'm home left with injuries that will only worsen as I age. I see the story with a lot more maturity and understanding. I find that I relate to Max's losses and failures deeply, and for that I will always be very close to this game. From the music to the writing it's an excellent story. I wish Rockstar would remaster it with a refreshed multiplayer. R.I.P. James McCaffrey.
For those asking for Max Payne 4, don’t hold your breath. I’d love to see a new R* game with Max Payne shooting mechanics, but give us a new character. Let Max rest.
Max Payne 3 is personally my favourite in the series. The humanity of Max is put on full display like never before and I find each playthrough enjoyable.
MagicMaster667 Well, i mean..he's been retired, doing bodyguard work and drowning himself in Alchohol and Pills soo...i don't know if his skills would keep up.
MagicMaster667 Really not plotholes, through the majority of the game Max is drunk and high off painkillers. He’s not exactly in the right state of mind and he mentions it very often in cutscenes. He admits he was just tricked into being the distraction, being the cliche “Great American Savior of the Poor” like he was used to being, just not in the US anymore.
Yes, I did. He was mislead but he always suspected he was being used. In MP3 however, Max goes full white knight, blaming himself for everything that goes wrong, even when some things were clearly not his fault. And what bothers me more is that he's never aware how ridicolous the whole situation is, how he survives every wave of enemies and never seem to enjoy antything he's doing, unlike the previous games.
I think pretty much everyone who knows about Max Payne knows about this game; its flaws just make people dislike or not be interested in it. Not everyone enjoys games with fun gameplay strapped to a miserable, humorless story.
I love Max Payne 1&2 but Max Payne 3 is also my favorite. The action and set-pieces are just insane and so intense and well done. I haven't found any shooter that comes close in that regard.
Eric Nick The writing has nothing smart about it, though. Some of the dialogue and the one--liners were entertaining but Max Payne was always more than that. MP3's story on comparison feels shallow and even like an afterthought
I'm pretty sure that was Dan Houser's inspiration considering not just the locale, but the whole style of the game is like a Tony Scott (RIP) movie compared to the first & second one that were closer to Remedy's inspirations (gritty, low-budget action movies of the '90s).
A game with one of the most depressing story line played during one of my most depressing time of life and it still brings back sad nostalgia from back then when I watch the gameplay.
I completely understand all of your criticisms in this video... however Max Payne 3 is one of the few games that I routinely go back too. Ever since I bought the game when it came out I play it through at least once a year and is probably the only game I go back to a play on higher difficulties (even though Hardcore mode made me want to rip my hair out). For me, overall, when everything in this game is put together it was (and is) still one of my favorite experiences I've ever had.
"The multiplayer for this game was a mean spirited meat grinder, just as nasty as the story mode and three times as deadly. Everybody was struggling for a spot at the top, only to get stomped down by who had the best gear and best ping. The animations didn't help, with players being stuck in the middle of standing up while breaking from cover. It was a game of king of the hill but everyone was weighed down with iron bars. And those who stayed on top would never get dislodged from their ivory towers. It was like a microcosm of gangland life made into a video game." I feel like the writers forgot the best part of Max Payne's writing; The metaphors.
My sentiment exactly. I think a majority of the critiques in this video were either nitpicks or rather unrealistic remarks. Max Payne 3 was solidly crafted-- campaign and multiplayer. The gameplay mechanics for a third person shooter are second to none.
This game played amazingly, even if it was hard as hell at times with a controller. It demanded accurate shooting to stay alive. The story was one of the most visceral ones Ive played in a game...it felt relevant and real.
First two were more Sin City style comic driven story. This one was more realistic and followed a man well on his way out. Had very obvious Wolverine type vibes but that made it gnarly.
I played Max 3 in my earlier teens, at first I didn't really like the brazilian setting as I couldn't understand the enemies talking, Now a few years later I really appreciate and have fond memories of the games, Im now married to A brazilian woman, have been to brazil and and can attest to the great job the developers did making the game look real. Some day in the future if I have kids, I hope they will be dual lingual so I can revisit the game and they can tell me what the bad guys are saying.
Awesome video as always! You know how much I love your editing, organization, and transitions. Your scripts are on top of their game. However I say this with much love, your multiplayer explanation section of the video made me feel like you were just reading as fast as possible. I felt like I missed some points if I was not at 110% attentive on your video. I do not think it would hurt to slow down a bit and have the video extend a bit, also with more clips showing your explanation. I know its a lot of info you want to put out there to explain your analysis, but if that is the case then it might be better to cut out less important information. But that is just my take on it, and I could possibly be a minority in this opinion. However, do not let that over take into account how much I admire the time and dedication you put into these videos/series and how proud I continue to be as a friend and patreon supporter!
Oh yeah for sure, I think I remember asking Ray once in a hangout about the challenges of obtaning information for multiplayer on dead games. I can totally recognize the challenge is real for these video projects on that aspect. I always have much respect when you can your tools to gain as much data as possible like Ray does by using friends to gather his own multiplayer video footage instead of just using other peoples videos online. My only critic honestly was I felt flow was off in the script/video for the multiplayer portion, so if information is too obscure to portray, maybe it might be better to omit some of the more in depth analysis of it since it can be considered irrelevant for the better flow. BUT ! I also recognize that might be a minority opinion of mine lol
Yeah maybe I am more of a normie and all that, especially as someone who hasnt played max payne 3 the info might have gone over my head, but i still stand with what i said, but i recongnize that it is unpopular opinion ha. But I feel you squid, I wish you luck on the game you want to work on, I would love to help in any way i can ha
it is an OK game, but when you compare it to 1 and 2 it feels shitty and disappointing, playing it made me realise that best thing about 1&2 wasn't bullet time, it was climate, and this game ain't got one, it's just a plainass arcade shooter
The multiplayer section was perhaps the most interesting to me. I'd always overlooked it as a tacked-on mode, reminiscent of the era it was created. You convinced me that, in the right environment, it's actually very entertaining and unique. Sadly, in normal play, that environment doesn't exist, but regardless, I might have to try the MP later down the road.
It surprised me too. I was genuinely not looking forward to playing it after my experience with unknown masters, but with the community, it was a total blast.
I was surprised by how good the MP was at launch, but it was let down by serious server issues, and tons of hacking and glitching. By the time any of those things started to get addressed (at least on PC), they had already released required DLC so if you wanted to keep up with the player base you had to shell out for more content. And as I recall the hackers never really went away.
I bought Max Payne 3 at launch, and the MP was really special imo. The fact they incorporated the "Bullet Time" into the MP was great. It was based on if you could see the player. I liked it.
Max Payne 3, great game, if had to complain it felt repetitive, however, some of the best cut scenes of all time and the soundtrack was outstanding. 21:20-21:55, so well stated. Truly a classic game overall. Be really cool if the Max Payne series gets remastered someday for the PS4 Pro, at least Max Payne 3.
@@linhza501 Mafia 3's gunplay is my absolute favorite cover-shooter (which, granted isn't saying much), but I absolutely loved the core gameplay loop. The thing that killed it was repetition. Mafia 3 - from a mechanical and technical standpoint - is far, far the best in the series. A very underrated game that was bogged down by a disaster-filled release, needless political discourse, and paradoxically an over-emphasis on responding to criticisms of Mafia II. In doing so, they made Mafia III too much like all of the other open-world ubisoftapoloozas out there. They took the criticisms of Mafia II to heart and acted on them years after the formula people craved became stale, that's the original sin of the third Mafia game's development. The mirrors didn't help. Admittedly, going back recently and playing it again (along with all of the dlc, which works wonders in breaking up that repetitive mission structure) has really improved my perception of the game. I hope other people give it another chance, I think it was released at a bad time - both in that it was too early given the game's state, and in that the community as a whole needed something to shit on relentlessly, and found Mafia III a prime prospect. I think its reputation as a poor game is unearned. It is a fine game - just a fine game. Nothing spectacular, but my favorite ots cover-shooter.
Perfect video. Excellent breakdown of every detail. I really enjoyed Max Payne 3. I bought it day one on the Xbox 360. Didn't play the prior two games, so there was no baggage for me coming in. Loved the combat and the unforgiving/sometimes frustrating nature of it. The multiplayer was sneaky good/underrated. It's a nice Hybrid between GTA IV and V, with better combat physics. Put a decent amount of time into it. Even got invited in a mention on Twitter from the Official Rockstar Games account to join them in a session, and from that, built a pretty cool relationship with the marketing department of Rockstar (their official Twitter account follows me). A lot of fun memories with the single player and the multiplayer.

Dianova absolutely I love this
I loved it too. But Max is no fool. He knew an urgent voice from a relaxed tone.
XD
Everything is terrible in the Payne-o-verse
New York Minute mode was in all the Max Paynes. So probably why he didn't mention it
Theres a script that lets you instantly skip cutscenes search for it in the mp3 modding discord
I think Max Payne 3 is the only game I've finished, from first level to last level, about 10 or 11 times. I keep coming back to it
Really glad to hear James McCaffrey personally requested to play Max again for 3. I genuinely believe that MP3 is his best role. Not standing inside a booth and talking like in 1 and 2, and instead being given full range to act with his body and movements, allowed McCaffrey to fully embody Max in 3, and gave out probably one of the most memorable performances in video games IMO
hopefully they bring him back in the remakes cuz i cant see anyone else playing the character
@@foxalpha3203 In Max Payne 3, some lines are actually recorded by Ned Luke when he's trying out for GTA5.

@@Chewberto I personally think it's replayability is greatly reduced by the unskippable cutscenes...

@@DisDatK9 Very true. I don't find that to be a bad thing. I just love the way they tell the narrative in this game. They do a great job of Max's internal dialogue and demons which to me makes this story told very well, even if it is one that treads common grounds.
Play it while keeping up with max on his drinking for full immersion.
i love how max actually expresses emotion in this game instead of just grumbling in flat monotone the whole time like in the first two. seeing him try to blend in with ordinary people in awkward social situations really makes him feel sad and pathetic.
yep, it was one of the things I liked in the game! his voice acting had *range* 😳
like I love the previous 2 but 3 really surprised me with that!

The second time I played through it, though, I was dealing with depression, and that completely changed the way that I understood and interpreted Max as he's written in this one.

Diablo 3, the start of the long downwards slide for blizzturd.
I was one off the crazy Diablo fan for years, Diablo 3 was disgusting and bad. Max Payne 3 was amazing. But sadly, both off them died now... No one laughs, just pain.
"(Diablo 3 was good)"
lol no, it wasn't. even after the final patch of the basic game it was still okay at best. the game only redeemed itself after RoS released and the seasons started.
Mona Sax running at me while dual wielding Cattle Prods is still the most terrifying thing I've ever seen in a video game.
Matt, is that you Matt? Or are you some other Matt Foley? :)
Scott Hall The Matt that hangs out with Micro and Nikki? That's definitely me.
Youre everywhere man! :P
I almost got you!
The ubiquitous Matt Foley.
by far one of most polished well made 3rd person shooter game ever made
Max Payne 3... 6 years later... 6 years later
You'll walk... WITH A LIMP!
I repeated that line throughout most of my teen years, love it to bits
God damn right. So with ya.
I just finished the game today, sad its over..
*AGHGHGHHHHHGGGHHHHGGGHHHHHGGHHGGGGHHHHHH*
"Control should be prioritized over immersion"
And a year down the road, Rockstar's latest venture with Red Dead Redemption 2 makes this quote all the more important.
I hate this trend of "Tedious=realistic and immersive"
My God .The scream from Dead .... just terrifying and torturous .
It causes me physical discomfort
For those asking for Max Payne 4, don’t hold your breath. I’d love to see a new R* game with Max Payne shooting mechanics, but give us a new character. Let Max rest.
we could have a whole new ip with those mechanics honestly
Yeah, max has had a rough time. He isn't a spring flower he used to be. All of those pain killers take a toll, you know.
Well read dead 2 does have the max Payne style killcam but you have to be a physicist to get it right
the franchise is called Max Payne so it's with him there or not happening (i know we play as Mona in MP2 but it is still Max's story).
@National 1 I know i saw it lol
Here we go!
Racist
Love your channel!

Its Ryan! Woooooooo!!
I remember that from that one song on the first Tony Hawk game.
RIP James McCaffrey
Honestly one of my most favorite games of all time. To me everything about this game is perfect.
To me it's almost perfect, not so much where it's without its flaws but pretty damn close to perfection.
I still love this game. And weirdly it got better the more I replayed it on harder modes
The gunplay is so fucking good in this game.
@John Smitty moron
John Smitty third person gunplay is way better in my opinion
@John Smitty nah I like to see my character when I'm shooting
@@espenbrathen7156😂😂😂
If you haven't seen City Of God then go see it. It's really good.
The soundtrack to MP3 is an absolute classic
probably the best single player third person shooter I have ever played.
Mentions film influences.
Doesn't mention Man on Fire.
Rayce.....my man...
I think Man On Fire is the main influence (cutscenes style, story, character)
He already referenced it, and other like John Woo films, in the re-review of the first game.
Max Payne 3 is personally my favourite in the series. The humanity of Max is put on full display like never before and I find each playthrough enjoyable.
Max Payne 3 is amazing. I love it. one of my favorite games of last gen.
I was about to sleep. Guess I'll be replaying Max Payne 3 now.
I have to agree with you about the plot failing on a few places, like *Max* not realising some obvious stuff even though he was a detective.
He was also high on painkillers on the previous games. Doesn't mean he was an idiot.
"Am I in a videogame...?"
Max Payne 3, along with Grand Theft Auto IV are the two Rockstar games that you either love or hate.
I love this game, its my favorite of the trilogy and its just really sadly overlooked
leonthesleepy I love how everything he touches go to shit. NOTHING goes right in this game.
I think pretty much everyone who knows about Max Payne knows about this game; its flaws just make people dislike or not be interested in it.
Not everyone enjoys games with fun gameplay strapped to a miserable, humorless story.
Zaphero Clever insult but I'd disagree with you. I thought that writing was smart and gameplay smooth.
This video is officially as old as when Max Payne 3 was when this video came out
I played MP3 a few weeks ago having not played it for years, and I never realised before how similar it is to Man On Fire 😮
I'm pretty sure that was Dan Houser's inspiration considering not just the locale, but the whole style of the game is like a Tony Scott (RIP) movie compared to the first & second one that were closer to Remedy's inspirations (gritty, low-budget action movies of the '90s).
Such an underrated game, I wish GTA played and felt like this game did.
Here I am, watching a 6 Years Later video 5 years after it's release.
A game with one of the most depressing story line played during one of my most depressing time of life and it still brings back sad nostalgia from back then when I watch the gameplay.
Great work bud! Really enjoying the video!
Oh shit, it's SAU-SIEGE, best crossover ever

I completely understand all of your criticisms in this video... however Max Payne 3 is one of the few games that I routinely go back too. Ever since I bought the game when it came out I play it through at least once a year and is probably the only game I go back to a play on higher difficulties (even though Hardcore mode made me want to rip my hair out). For me, overall, when everything in this game is put together it was (and is) still one of my favorite experiences I've ever had.
Same. Despite its *many* flaws, I have more fun playing it than any of the others, and more playtime to boot.
Try old school, it will make you break your Keyboard/controller
Old school is harder.
I'm currently playing it on Old School and I find it *slightly* easier since death doesn't taunt you with the last stand you just die.
that's only easier in your preference but ok.......
A sign that Developers cared about their game:
“This trailer was made entirely with in-game footage”
It feels like it was released only three years ago or something like that. But now it's EIGHT years ago!
It was like a microcosm of gangland life made into a video game."
I feel like the writers forgot the best part of Max Payne's writing; The metaphors.
AtticWarrior1994 Anyone else reed this with Max's voice in their heads?
PAIN and TEARS are some of the best tracks ever put through a speaker. Especially for a video game.
Don’t forget P A N A M A
I don't give a flying fuck what anyone says, I fucking love this game. It's a masterpiece
That's probably due to not having as much experience with it, and not being able to delve into as much detail as I normally do.
You're joking, right? It was painful to watch.
Underrated for sure. The strengths BY FAR outweighed the flaws. I thought the game was overall amazing
it is an OK game, but when you compare it to 1 and 2 it feels shitty and disappointing, playing it made me realise that best thing about 1&2 wasn't bullet time, it was climate, and this game ain't got one, it's just a plainass arcade shooter
@japacapa You thought. XD
japacapa wrong but aight go off
japacapa moron blinded by nostalgia.
@@japacapa it's a matter of taste and bitch you ain't got none
This is such an exhaustive review. I don't think I've ever seen such diligence applied to a review. Magnificent.
R.I.P James McCaffrey :(
The multiplayer section was perhaps the most interesting to me.
I'm re-installing the game just to take a jab at the multiplayer since i never had the chance to try it . Hopefully with the Raycevick community !
It was packed with cheaters on launch so I only played a few private matches. It also took ages to get in a game sadly.
I bought Max Payne 3 at launch, and the MP was really special imo. The fact they incorporated the "Bullet Time" into the MP was great. It was based on if you could see the player. I liked it.
I just bought Max Payne 3 again today actually £3!
26:10 jesus, 'Pain' makes my stomach twist up... What a song.

You can't just hide the OST at this part from us, Ray.
Black Lagoon, I see you're a man of culture as well
This and MGS 3 are probably my favorite games. They dont make them like they used to 😕
No! They do not.
Nonesense i'm sick of this whole, game and music aren't as good now, just look harder.
Nonesense i'm sick of this whole, game and music aren't as good now, just look harder.
Too true
Same dude, Max Payne 3, MGS3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in my top 5 of the best games I played.
I like how in a game with high power rifles the uzi is by far the strongest weapon
Watching a video that was about Max Payne 6 years later that was posted 6 years ago
One of the most beautiful and striking games ever made. A true masterpiece from every stroke of the digital paintbrush.
Max Payne 3s gunplay spoiled me for years! Even new games like Mafia 3 could scratch the itch
Mafia 3's gunplay fell flat though. Nothing comes close to MP3 here
I cant even go back to Max Payne 1 and 2 just because Max Payne 3's gameplay was awesome
Nothing spectacular, but my favorite ots cover-shooter.
watching max payne 3 6 years later. 6 years later 😅
