  • Hello everyone.
We have followed two Swan pairs for five years now.
This is our Mute Swan Nature Diary for the second part of 2024 - documenting the lives of these two pairs that live around here.
We've been following Claude & Maude, Frank & Francine, (and also Snowy & Blanche and Harry & Sally), for the last five years. We have learned so much about the species and the individuals we've followed.
It has been a real privilege and an absolutely wonderful experience.
We've detailed the challenges they face through the years, as they try to maintain their territories and bring up young, in this sometimes harsh and changing climate.
If you haven't watched any of these films, linked below is an update for 2022. If you have the time, maybe watch this 2022 update first.
It's proved to be our most popular film to date
    • The Circle of Life - a...
    Or our 2023 film here
    • A MUTE SWAN DIARY 2023
So how have our pairs fared since March?. Are they still around and are they still on the same territories? And how many cygnets have they hatched. And have any survived through to the end of June?
And does Frank still prefer fighting to caring for Francine and his family!!??
    Join us to find out
    Dave and Sue
The wonderful music on this film is by Serge, our friend - SergePavkin Music. Thank you Serge, you are an inspiration and we love these specific tracks as they remind us of our Swans here.💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛.

The legendary Grebe Lake. It's been more than two years since we released a track about it and even more years since we met, Dave. Thank you for your love of nature. For your kindness and humanity. Beautiful video. Beautiful swans.

A labour of love as they say. When we’re out it clears the mind for a while and even though we do t get out around here as much as we used to, it’s still a joy to just wander for a while.
Your music has always been an inspiration to do more. 🙏🙏🙏

Pike in that lake? Poor Snowy and Blanche, Frank's babies won't last long wandering off like that!

It was just a wonderful experience Anne - one of my favourites. It’s a shame they have lost a cygnet - they are getting quite big now.
Need to find Claude and Maude. But they’re so good at keeping them and their cygnets in all the little meres

    Hi Dave and Sue,
Well we finally caught up with our favourite Swan soap opera on the telly at the weekend ❤🦢. More drama here then eastenders for sure!😂. Have to say, these films are brilliantly edited, some amazing footage, loved the opening sequence in particular 👌. As well as that gorgeous shot of the cygnet on mums back, just beautiful 😍. Frank certainly won't be winning any father of the year awards any time soon 😂🙈. Madness the way he leaves the cygnets to their own devices! Glad to see that all the pairs are doing better than last year though. It must have been really special to spend that half an hour with Sally and her cygnets, what gorgeous little creatures, your hard work has paid off here in observing but being respectful and quiet👊🙌. And we got bonus footage of the red kites soaring and the carp spawning! Nature is incredible. We loved this update, thank-you for your tremendous effort in bringing it to us guys 😊.
    All the best,
    Shell and Pete 😊👊👍

and every day is a surprise! Every day something different! Love where we live, we’re so lucky!

We can’t work out why Frank has (mostly) stayed put. It could well be that the higher water levels are providing more food on his little mere than in previous years.
Not many cygnets have survived any time on the main lake - too exposed and also more predators (pile and suchlike)
Glad you enjoyed this one - it has been wonderful following them again 👍👍

The vegetation is so high everywhere Sah. And combined with the mud still being around it’s impossible to check all the meres. I think I found C&M again in late July last year so maybe we will be successful soon. Strange behaviour today. Harry, the new male at one end of the big lake and Sally and the three cygnets at the other end 🤷🏻‍♂️. Maybe protecting that end but he wasn’t moving much on a little island.
      The plot thickens again!

The social life of Mute Swans is a wonder and so many people are not aware of the complexities of life in the lakes, forests and ponds around us. From the challenge of finding a mate and then staying together through the years as humans, pikes, other predators and changing climate makes things difficult for them. So these stories are about Mute Swans, but also about bigger issues and for us to reflect on! And it must also be very satisfying when you find new things to wonder about as you follow them from a distance, or up close when the chance is there:) Have a great week in the south mate! All the best, Ant

It’s strange, we haven’t been around as much here as you know, but there is still a thrill when we come upon one or more of the pairs and their cygnets.
I need to find Claude and Maude - they’re just so good at hiding away with their cygnets in all of the small meres around the Gravel Pits. I think that’s why they are always so successful!
Have a good rest of the week my good friend.

What is Frank doing! 😃. Well so far a little better than previous years. They still have four cygnets. In previous years he’s taken the family out on to the big lake and they haven’t lasted long! But we think that this year is different, in that as water levels are much higher, there is enough food for the cygnets on his little mere so he hasn’t had to take them anywhere else.
Isn’t nature wonderful! We always learn so much every time we go out.
Thanks for the kind comments Donna, and hope you’re having a great weekend 👍👍
