In interviews Lennon said that he didn't write Imagine as a wish for a different and better world. He wrote it as a directive to actually imagine that place. He realized that everything ever created by humans - from buildings to airplanes to war - existed as thought and imagination first. He was directing us to actively imagine a better world and to actually build it. One Love.
Interesting that on a comment that points to the song's message of using imagination towards positive pursuits and positive approaches to life and each other we get a reply that instantly focuses on a negative about a positive remark made about someone.

We so need John Lennon now. The man who gunned him down took something so special out fo the world, a voice that should not have been quieted. I do not think I will ever stop missing him or crying when I think about his death. Julian should have had the time to reunite with his dad as an adult. Sean should have grown up with his dad. Such a mind, spirit, lover of humanity. A song from 1971 that is as poignant and timeless as ever. I wish our musicians today would were like this. Don’t worry about your fan base. Let your truth pour out and inspire a revolution of love and peace.
For these times, “ Blowing In the Wind” by Bob Dylan. He also sang The Times They Are A Changin’ at MLK’s March on Washington. Paul McCartney wrote Blackbird for the Civil Rights Movement after the Beatles came to the US and refused to play at any segregated venues in the South.
Young Man, Thank you for giving this song the respect it deserves. The last person I saw react to it did not, and he really brought me down. I feel better now.☮️❤️I can see you have a beautiful soul.
I was in high school when this song came out. (1971 i th8nk)I look back and my young mind could not truly “ imagine” this. As I aged, I could turn loose of conventions like war, violence, religion in a way my mind could not fathom then. He wrote it hoping people could open their minds and “ Imagine”. Brilliant, they so many minds are forever closed it seems. I so remember the day John was made red, was at work in an ICU as a nurse. We all cried. It was such a shock and hurt. Was hard to find any peace in that.

"There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

David Obrien where’s Paul in all this? I’d think we would have at least heard from him. Also John wasn’t the angel everyone thinks he was. He liked to argue with his band mates and is said to have been abusive to Yoko. Not to mention the time they had (another) hit song about communism.
I find myself asking regularly over the past two decades*: "What would John have done if he were alive to see this shit?" *If I were older, I would probably have thought the same thing since the day he died
What happened on the planet earth? How can a man like that be murdered? He was murdered at the age 40!!! Imagine how many songs he could still compose!!!😰
He was murdered in front of his home which is close enough for me to walk to. Ive only passed The Dakota, where John lived, one time. I walk around the block to avoid it. Ive been to the' IMAGINE' memorial in Central Park many times. Many of the lyrics of this song come directly from Yoko's book, 'Grapefruit". As much as I am not a fan of Yoko she did co-write this song.
@@curtisthomas2670 - Ridiculous. He was out of the spotlight for at least 5 years prior to him being killed. Deinstitutionalism had occurred in many of the major states in 1979 due to the movie, “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.” Many asylums began to release patients and shut their doors permanently in some parts of the country due to multiple lawsuits for extreme and bad treatment of the patients. This caused a massive homeless situation in 1980, and states that thought they would not want to give up the asylums suddenly found that they saved a lot of money by not taking care of all the mentally deficient. Prior 1979 Mr Chapman would have been confined to an asylum. But do gooders demanded the government shut down the asylums which they did under duress only to learn later how much money it saved them. Now even if you are a danger to yourself or others they lock you up for 72 hours give you some chill out drugs and kick you out the back door. So if you want to say the government had a hand in killing Lennon you would be partially right, but Chapman has to take the lions portion of the blame even if he was deranged at the time. The movers and the shakers in government were pretty busy with the Iran hostage crisis and the Cold War where Russia was sending troops to Afghanistan as well as the Contra Sandinista fiasco in El Salvador San Salvador staging in Panama. As far as I am aware of John Lennon made no public speeches about any of those things prior to his death. He did say a few things about China on occasion but, Kissinger had normalized a lot things between China and the US by 1978. A lot of people forget that another deranged idiot shot Reagan in 1981. Whether we want to admit it or not the asylums were keeping the homeless away from the rest of us, and providing room and board so they did not have to sleep on the streets, defecate on the sidewalk, self medicate with drugs and alcohol and constantly bother people for money. I wish John were still here because I loved some of his music. The movie Yesterday keeping him alive was wonderful.
Yes its true... he tried to make the world a better place by trying to spread a message of peace... and then he sadly got shot and killed. I will keep imagining "all the people living life in peace" for good old John, and hope one day his vision becomes reality
At least John had the ba..s to put the words down. He wasn't silly, he knew that it was unlikely to happen but he also knew that the only way you change is by saying these sorts of things. He knew that the "bed-in's" for peace weren't going to change the world but he had the ba..s to put himself out there and say it. He knew he would be heard. He wasn't afraid to fall on his face if he believed enough. RIP John. This year he's as long dead as he was alive. That's a thought.
Don't let the piano fool ya, this song is communist propaganda. It's not pretty, nice, or peaceful. A vision of a Dystopian world is sold to the listener. Lennon's lies are covered with fairy dusts & golden ribbons to hide his disgusting reputation

“They sell war, why can’t we sell peace?” Lennon responding to the world that mocked him for doing the “bed in” for peace protest where he performed “Give Peace A Chance”. And they still mock him for doing that,
There is a live version of Marvin Gaye singing “what’s going on” accompanied by the funk brothers. Still relevant and maybe even more so now. Peace. Teach.
My Junior High School (1973-76) chorus (100+ voices, many boys whose voices hadn't changed) would learn this song at the start of every school year, sing it at the end of every concert and alumni would be invited to come up on stage and join in. Powerful to learn at such a young age.
This song is about a new world order and the ushering in for Communism. Pay attention people. This song is not about peace but the taking away of all culture and a one world commune. Yoko Know was a card carrying member of the COMMUNIST party. Go check out the Beatles album art. They followed Alister Crowley and the doctorine of do as you wilt. Look it up.
I also remember the candle light visual they showed on tv and I couldn't believe how it was like the whole world was mourning, but it had been almost the same for Elvis 3 yrs earlier. I remember both but too young to really understand, and I do now at almost 52. John Lennon deserves every bit of respect he is given because he was an amazing human!
Lennon also said that "Imagine" was one of the most radical songs he'd ever done, but it's amazing what you can get people to swallow when you do it as a lullaby.
It seems more of a call to a godless new world order than a love song to the people of Earth. Don't shoot me please, it just my observation not a condemnation of your options.

First, peace to you Jamel! Just a white guy here in California who loves your reactions! We need more John Lennon in this world! No one is perfect, but we can all work towards the goal of peace and togetherness!
@ZeUs nope that's the narrow minded view of the song, cancel culture sure is something these days, you hear one lyric and turn the whole thing into a negative when it is quite the opposite, you are part of the problem.

Lennon and Ono co-produced the song with Phil Spector. Recording began at Lennon's home studio at Tittenhurst Park, England, in May 1971, with final overdubs taking place at the Record Plant, in New York City, during July. In October, Lennon released "Imagine" as a single in the United States, where it peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was first issued as a single in Britain in 1975, to promote the compilation Shaved Fish, and reached number six on the UK Singles Chart that year. It later topped the chart following Lennon's murder in 1980. BMI named "Imagine" one of the 100 most performed songs of the 20th century. In 1999, it was ranked number 30 on the RIAA's list of the 365 "Songs of the Century", earned a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll". A 2002 UK survey conducted by the Guinness World Records British Hit Singles Book named it the second best single of all time, while Rolling Stone ranked it number three in the 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Lennon composed "Imagine" one morning in early 1971, on a Steinway piano, in a bedroom at his Tittenhurst Park estate in Ascot, Berkshire, England. Ono watched as he composed the melody, chord structure and almost all the lyrics, nearly completing the song in one brief writing session. Described as a piano ballad performed in the soft rock genre, the song is in the key of C major. Its 4-bar piano introduction begins with a C chord then moves to Cmaj7 before changing to F; the 12-bar verses also follow this chord progression, with their last 4 bars moving from Am/E to Dm and Dm/C, finishing with G, G11 then G7, before resolving back to C. The 8-bar choruses progress from F to G to C, then Cmaj7 and E before ending on E7, a C chord substituted for E7 in the final bar. The 4-bar outro begins with F, then G, before resolving on C. With a duration of 3 minutes and 3 seconds and a time signature of 4/4, the song's tempo falls around 75 beats per minute.

It's a shame that this song is almost 50 years old and it has mostly fallen on deaf ears.
I hope someday they will us.
aliagirl 9 this song is about a world without hatred and intolerance.
The struggle never ends
John didn’t even follow his own dream. He rejected his own son and lived a life of wealth, not one of no possessions.
aliagirl 9 such a conservative twat!
I remember the day he was assassinated. We were in 9th grade AP English class. We sat there in utter devastation. Our teacher, a former nun who marched for civil rights sat at her desk and cried. Still brings tears to my eyes.
Jamel, I discovered your reactions a few months ago and got addicted quickly to the good music but more importantly to your obvious status as a good human being skilled in the art of making people feel good about life. These are tough times but you are lightening the burden one song at a time. If you are ever in Texas, you are welcome around my campfire any time. Thanks Jamel
The message of this song is beautiful. If only everyone could hear the message and stop the madness.
The madness comes from our Government they push invalid stories and nonsense to confuse us so they can benefit. At the end of the day both parties are evil and don't care about us which is very obvious.
Wake up. The song is about socialism. Message just does not make sense. Childish nonsense

We so need John Lennon now. The man who gunned him down took something so special out fo the world, a voice that should not have been quieted. I do not think I will ever stop missing him or crying when I think about his death. Julian should have had the time to reunite with his dad as an adult. Sean should have grown up with his dad. Yoko should have grown old with her husband and we, the people of the world should still have him writing his beautiful songs, his quirky songs, his hard-hitting songs, his art that never failed to paint a picture in my mind and make me think about life in some way.
Your words were very well said!

John Lennon's "Imagine" is one of the worst pieces of Socialistic slop that has ever been laid to vinyl.
The end result of his lyric is Atheistic Materialism.

Let It Be
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the broken-hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah, there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Ah, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be

Have you ever heard Woman is N#&%@# of the World? It's a very honest song. You know some people test you and when you're ready, they still want to test you. Just lie down and listen to this song. 1970s was a different time. But men were men and women were women. It's a shame a crazy man took John Lennon's life. But life isn't fair. This is another song by John Lennon.
Thank you for highlighting my comment. The past is the past, and we all make mistakes, or don't go to the right parties. But maybe once something will go right. Blessings!
This was my grandmother's favorite song. She passed away 17 years ago. This song was played on her funeral. It resurfaced on the radio channels after the shootings in Paris. And now you're playing it. I was crying already when I saw the title, am a sobbing mess now. Thank you ❤️
I’m 74 years old, and I still get chills when John Lennon sings this.

There's just no words for such innocence and brotherhood.

Also “Lonesome Death” of Hattie Carrol and “Only a Pawn in their game” by Bob are relevant still and it’s so frustrating.
@dgmutch Oh the Jon Batiste version is definitely worth a listen for anyone who hasn't yet. Great take on a great song.
Yes, Batiste did a good cover and it actually was the first time I heard the song. It is truly a classic.
I would suggest the Peter, Paul, and Mary's version of Blowing in the Wind

1971 Imagine - Play The Youngblood’s - Get Together (Lyrics)
Love is but a song we sing
Fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Some may come and some may go
He will surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
If you hear the song I sing
You will understand, listen
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
I said come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Right now
Right now
Perfect request... I also mentioned Revolution by the Beatles

He was a "nuisance" to the powers that be. It is believed by some that a now deceased politician had a hand in his demise.
@@curtisthomas2670 maybe...
If he’d only written this gem he still be all that relevant!
The world needs to imagine more than ever now.
Giving me goosebumps this evening and such perfect words right now.

That bad ass Bohemian look made you cool.

In a utopian way sure, but otherwise it always devolves into communism and we all know how that turns out for the people.
@@tompaul2591 One world wouldn't have to be socialist or communist. If the collective will were there, it could be constructed as a free enterprise/ democracy, with a diverse competitive economic design, yet also operating within a collective.
@@wallacecallow2255 like I said, I a utopian way sure. However, humanity being what it is, there are, always has been and always will be those who simply try to run the system, beat the system, control others, etc. Any commune would have to be small and self regulating. Then, that all turns in to tribalism. The globalist plan doesn't allow for any of what you fantasized about...unfortunate as it is.
To answer your question, although someone else already may have as I'm just seeing this and haven't read other comments, the song was originally released in 1971. I was born in 1974, and this was a very important staple of my childhood influences. It was revolutionary and meaningful in its time and to this day. One of many old sayings that hold true, a history forgotten or never learned is doomed to repeat itself. It is heartwarming to see people in your generation sharing this beautiful message, yet saddening that we have to remind people. We truly are strong and United, and we have to remember that
Love the reactions! You should react to “Blackbird” by The Beatles. It was written by Lennon’s bandmate, Paul McCartney and he was inspired by the civil rights movement in the 60s. Its a comforting song given the events that are unfolding in the US
Bird was British slang at the time for an attractive woman
Utterly beautiful song. I never cry... but this song always brings me to the edge. Every single time.
mandarinlearner Yes, but it has nothing to do with the subject of the song. McCartney has said in multiple interviews that it was a reaction to the civil rights movement.
gasaholic47 it is about black women
mandarinlearner Do some research. You don’t know what you’re talking about.
"Imagine all the people living for today." That says it all.
Thank you, Some of the most wonderful, thought provoking lyrics ever written. Released in 1971.
Jamel, you speak from the heart, a real pleasure to come here. I think I'm right in saying that the song Imagine, written and performed by Lennon was voted the best song in the last century.
Some Bob Marley is needed right now. Try Redemption Song, War, Get Up Stand Up, and Exodus
Third World's version of Jackson Browne's 'Lives in the Balance' is a rockin' cover: ua-cam.com/video/9Szkyc0o3to/v-deo.html
This song has always made me cry and today it really hits. It was released in 1971.
Yep!!! I remember my Mom saying it was sung by a war hating hippie, is what she called him!! I was 14 so of course I got sent to my room for ‘ smarting off’ to her!!! I remember like it was yesterday. John would be so so sad to see this world 💔💔😢😢💔💔😢😢💔💔😢😢💔💔😢😢
@Rebecca Lusk me too. So, beautiful yet so, sad. ✌💖
Amen. Sure do need this now. This is a classic from 1971- 50 years and we still have a lot of work to go on this message.
I think we need to stop, take a deep breath, smile, and hug a loved one. ❤️🙏🏻
