  • Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a complex mental health condition that is often misunderstood in films and tv shows. So being the completely inexperienced youtuber I am, I decided to research how DID is portrayed in films as a whole and specifically Split, Moon Knight, and Arcane, and figure out whether or not these illustrations are realistic.
I'm sure there are things I got wrong in this video, so feel free to kindly inform me of any mistakes in the comments!
    Have a wonderful day ❤️

It should proabably be mentioned that the symptoms Powder is showing are more connected to BPD, her unstable image of self just looks like DID - she does not actually switch between two completely different personas with different memories and agendas. Psychotic episodes with auditory hallucinations and paranoid delusions are in some cases also symptoms of BPD. She does however dissociate, in BPD its called "splitting". It basically means that her subconscious turns loved ones into enemys to protect herself from the devestating pain of feeling abandoned or rejected.
    SPOILER WARNING:
In the last scene she literally says "I thought maybe you could love me like you used to, even though i`m different (because she feels like a total jinx after what happened). But you`ve changed too."

We are a system and have a Jinx and Powder introject. It feels so weird to read this lol even though i know its abt the show Powder and not our Powder. Our powder and jinx are very clearly there own people and different from the characters

This is so interesting! I think DID is easily one of the most maligned mental illnesses in media, particularly horror media, so it is very encouraging to know that representation is now at least reaching a point of being sensitive enough to make people on the outside see it and want to extend a more sympathetic curiosity instead of assuming it's just "disorder that makes you scary."

as a system I think this is a pretty good video, I will say though that direct communication with alters/headmates is not only possible but a goal of therapy, so you can all learn to work together. as with everything it varies system to system.

As someone also very interested in this disorder and has done a lot of research over the years, I’d say that you overall did a good job. One thing I’d like to point out though is that in DID, there is no “original” person. All alters split off from the whole, making each one part of the person and just as valid. What is often seen as the original is actually the host of a system, which is the alter that is out the most often and is often responsible for day to day activities. The host often also goes by the same name as that person’s birth name which is one of the reasons why many may mistake the host for the “original”. For a fictive like Steven Grant, he may have been created from a character but Mark wasn’t the original and didnt make him or choose for him to become an alter. Both of them are alters split off from the brain with the purpose of dealing with trauma. That is all. Great video and I loved how you talked about Jinx bc even tho she likely has schizophrenia and/or bpd rather than did, she is very similar to someone with did in that she experiences very severe childhood trauma that continues to affect her years down the line. Characters like her and Moon Knight may not be the best examples due to Jinx being a villain and Moon Knight going the violent supernatural route, but they are a sign that people are starting to become more aware and respectful of those with mental disorders. I have hope that this is the start of better representation of those struggling with DID and other trauma related disorders

I'm 2:10 into this video and I too am critiquing these videos as well as this video about those videos... I think that made sense. I'm using my own personal experience with DID as a reference. Good luck, TripleC Media guy!
    Video's done! Let's review.
Rapid switching can be a thing. In fact, there is a phenomenon we sometimes call "rolodexing" where a system (people with DID/OSDD) might go through rapid switching - sometimes as many as two or three time in a minute for several minutes at a time. It's extremely uncomfortable and can even become very painful.
Yes. Alters can talk directly to each other. We can do a lot more than that actually. For examples, we can share not only words, but feelings, thoughts, and perspectives. Alters can and do influence the feelings and behaviors of the alter fronting (in control of the body). We can even co-front (two alters sharing control) or be co-conscious where alters not fronting can still spectate and communicate to the one in control.
Nope! Power/Jinx is displaying symptoms that are definitely not related to DID.
Overall: Well done -- except one thing. There is one thing I REALLY have to point out because I think it's important.
You see the thing is -- you displayed kindness, empathy, and a willingness to learn and understand what we go through. For that, I seriously thank you. You've more than earned my (our) respect and appreciation. Keep up the good work, TripleC Media guy!

as someone who has DID/OSDD and was previously (mis)diagnosed with BPD/Bipolar, i'd categorize Powder/Jinx as having either a BPD stress-induced psychosis episode or a non-specific dissociative disorder (closer to OSDD), rather than DID or schizophrenia. under duress, she experiences psychosis, which CAN be a symptom of any of the previously-stated disorders, as well has having (albeit very warped) flashback/PTSD episodes. with that being said, watching Arcane and seeing the portrayal of Jinx's mental health echoing mine a little too closely is how i was able to confront my symptoms and finally seek out treatment for DID/OSDD.

With an Alter, every person in the System is an Alter even Marc, Structural Dissociation says that we all start off as multiple ego states in around 7 to 9 years old they all fuse together once that fuse happens it’s not possible to have DID, so Steven, Jake is much as as real as Marc is. With talking another Part doesn’t need to switch back and forth to hear/talk to them and or it feels like background noise (in your head) their not directly talking to you but you hear them, they can be Co-Conscious.
Still Love this video though❤ There needs to be more Awareness about this and other disorders🧡
For Me Moon Knight is My Favorite and another one of My favorite is called What If It Works?
There is a film that is trying to get greenlit called Jenn, and which I’m excited about it

Powder/Jinx's symptoms fit much better within a framing of BPD than DID, since her personality stays consistent despite her image of self being extremely unstable. Additionally, although people with BPD commonly suffer from psychosis (myself included), her case of it is so extreme that it arguably make her eligible to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia as well (though I'm not so sure about this, as it's a diagnosis I'm not so familiar with).
    She does not have DID.

I think that some portrayals of DID aren’t actually DID. They can be explained by other things like schizophrenia (especially in the case of Jinx), or just having a single split/fractured personality rather than multiple alters.

I will say that afaik the reason why did is associated with schizophrenia and was often mistaken for it is that schizophrenia is a common symptom of did, so jinx having schizophrenia doesnt mean she doenst have some sort of DID (althouhg in my opinion, she just has schizophrenia, considering i have it and the way they depicted it hits really really close to personnal experiences of triggers making the entire world seem jsut wrong or hostile)
Really nice video though i enjoyed it greatly

i def agree! with all the symptoms it's so tough sometimes to know, but for jinx i def think it's more schizophrenia, thanks for the insight!

Truly excellent video. I finished it feeling like I learned more about DID and how it should and shouldn't be presented in media. You can feel the amount of research and care you had put into the video to make sure you got across your points accurately. I like the shows and films you picked and the way that you went through them, and how some did a more accurate job than others. I need to check out Frankie & Alice now, I'm curious to see how to gets it's points across. Amazing job on the video!

As a c-did system, rapid switches are definitely possible! There's many reasons why a system would need to switch between states rapidly. Also, theres no "original" or "main"! In the theory of structural dissociation, ego states are separate in early childhood for everyone, and DID is the result of them not integrating like a healthly mind would around the age of after 8(?). Meaning there's no "original". Alters are real too. The ones that you might be referring to as "not real" would be fragmented alters, that are alters with less complex identities that you will see occur in polyfragmented systems. These alters may have more specific and roles and triggers. However often full complex identities are apart of systems as well.
And imo on powder/jinx, I don't know the character too well but jsyk systems can have bpd and schizophrenia etc! Just want to clarify because lots of ppl are making it seem like they're mutually exclusive. She very well could be a system with a unique presentation because of her other conditions, etc. As you said, it's good nuance!
Anyways great video! I'm always nervous about peoples takes on DID but i think you did a good job discussing it in media here!

I'm not sure which criterion you are citing but the most recent DSM requires the trauma has to be at an early age, and ranges is from 0 to 8-12, depending on the child. Some have extended formative years, some have shorter. After these formative years are complete, the window to develop DID closes. You cannot form DID in adulthood. You have it from your childhood and it can become active again in adulthood. You may have other kinds of dissociative disorders but not specifically DID. The trauma has to have happened in your childhood. Otherwise, it's not DID. It can be something like OSDD or BPD if the trauma happened in adulthood.

I think the portrayal of DID i appreciated the most was in a book series called Stormlight Archieves. It wasnt perfect, there were rapid switching, the alters talk to each other and are aware of each other and there arent really that much memory lost. But i appreciated it because it didnt treat the disorders as some scary mystery thing. Its just a girl who experienced severe truama as a child and doesnt know how to cope with it or face it. Its a fantasy series so you'd think it be portayed as something magical but no its just girl with powers who experienced truama as a child and developed DID as a result.
