    I’ve had etd for about 5 months now. My left ear had so much pressure, my right ear felt like fluid was filling up. Dr prescribed antibiotics and steroids. I think mine came from inhaling some dust particles at an old job. There’s not a lot of pressure in my right ear, it has gotten better but still bothers me. My right ear has gotten better too, I still feel fluid build up every once in awhile but I just mess with my ear and it drains. I still get pressure in my forehead and nose. I heard red light therapy helps to heal etd, there’s a guy on UA-cam who explains how it healed him. Ordered mine yesterday, hopefully it will help to heal it permanently. It’s really messing with my life. Praying for everyone to start healing!!!!

    I've had (apparently, according to an ENT who observed some pretty thick mucus up in my nasal cavity) Eustachian tube dysfunction for months now, the worst symptom being my hearing getting screwed up in one ear, intermittently. When the hearing is bad, there is no pop in that ear and more of a feeing of fullness. When the hearing gets better, I've got good popping going on. No fluid was observed in my middle ear but I'm not sure there isn't some mucus in there. Making things worse, my other ear has been fried by Ménière's disease and conversation is permanently distorted over there. So, I need my other "good" ear. I'm 70 soon and so there's a bit of natural hearing loss for me. I have a hearing aid for the good ear but it is not very effective when I have these bad days.
    An antihistamine spray was prescribed and that seemed to make it worse so I stopped. A nasal saline rinse was also suggested and that has possibly made a difference. Using the NeilMed system; kind of weird at first but it seems to be clearing my nasal passages and I haven't got any rinse into my middle ear. Check the UA-cam videos; do the "ka ka" thing to keep rinse from going into the wrong places.
    The other things I'm now doing - 500 mg of magnesium per day (look into that) and I've pretty much totally eliminated dairy as that is a mucus creator. Going good now for 6 days straight .....
    Update: after a few relapses, I’m up to over 2 weeks now with good hearing health in my good ear. So, no dairy, magnesium supplements (500 mg total per day, spread to 1 pill twice per day), lots of water … seems to have made a difference as my hearing is as good now as several years ago. Coinciding with this improvement is a more consistently clear nasal passage. Have not been doing the nasal saline rinse. Also, I’m now wondering if this eustachian dysfunction was the cause of my Ménière’s symptoms. One other thing, I’ve had a history of ear infections, childhood and adult.

    I've been experiencing problems with my hearing for years now - i believe this is the answer i was looking for but i'm not sure if its euschian tube disorder. Basically everytime I swallow anything (ex. food, water, or even saliva) i hear a like a click or pop, or more like i wanna say, a brief crackling sound? I wouldn't say that my hearing is muffled, but it does feel like theres something in my ear that's affecting my hearing- for instance to me, it sounds as if I'm talking in a moderate, loud enough voice but others say i talk sorta quiet or in unclear voice. Or whenever someone is talking to me, i tend to mishear things alot of times
    But anway, i experience the pop sounds in both my ears. The first time i experienced the pop/crackling sound whenever i swallowed was when i got back home from swimming one day. I was pretty young at the time, but i noticed it and went for a checkup few times at the doctors but they would always say that theres nothing wrong with my ears.
    There was this one time where i sneezed and my right ear felt like it became unblocked, and i could hear normally as i did before for a brief moment, but the 2nd time i sneezed right after, it got blocked again (this happened over random day after a few months). It's frustrating cause i don't know what this is, and it's hard to put into words but i still experience this problem
    Also my ear sometimes feels like its building pressure and becomes stuffy randomly, so everything starts sounding muffled and it doesnt clear easily. I've also recently started experiencing pressure in my ears whenever im riding in a car which never really happened before and it just doesn't seem to go away, and i feel that my hearing is starting to get worse, as in blocked/muffled that i can't hear click or pop sounds when i swallow things (i'm not sure how to explain it that well 😓 - but i hope it makes somewhat sense)

    about a month ago i had a bad fever... and all my synuses were clogged up. after clearing up the fever my eustachian tubes didnt open up. Its now been over 3 weeks and they're still not fully open. I dont have any pain or swelling, however i do have worse hearing than i had beforehand. Whenever i close my nose and blow i hear popping, the tubes still have mucus in them im 99% sure. My doctor is not taking me seriously even after explaining to her in detail that i dont feel completely well and that its bothering me.
    Does anyone please know of any remedies to help me out?
    I tried a nose spray with corticosteroids in it as i heard that corticosteroids help with unclogging the tube but after using it for about two weeks now there is no change.
    The issue must be of viral nature since if it was bacterial i would apparently get a fever again and possibly other issues with it.

    Note the above info seems to be just for obstructive dysfunction. Patulous eustacian tube is basically the reverse problem, and decongestants are not recommended as per Johns Hopkins site. I recently read a paper where plain water nasal rinse was mentioned, and have been using that method with success. I think the mechanism is that it causes a general swelling of the tissue (due to osmotic pressure), allowing the valve to close. The method gives me up to 24 hours relief, but its unpleasant and seems to damage the sense of smell. A saline solution of oestrogen was also mentioned, but I've not tried that. Paper said either method was 'poorly tolerated', which I guess means painful! General practitioners, and even ENT specialists seem to be clueless about the condition, and they do not appreciate you telling them what you've learnt.

      slenophile I just boil water in the kettle and let it cool to body temperature, then put it into the rinse bottle. Try for a few days to see if it helps. Note that plain water rinse is not pleasant, and seems to damage the sense of smell, which I guess will recover if you stop.

    • @paulwary

      slenophile I should add that if you are not used to nasal rinsing, start with saline rinse sachets until you are comfortable doing that. It does take a bit of getting used to. If you start trying to use plain water as a beginner it would be a nightmare, you would try it once then give up.

    • @nosedoctor
      @nosedoctor 5 місяців тому

      like a lot of "ideal solutions on paper" or in your mind, it seems plausible but every method of intervention includes risk and requires research and clinical trials and almost always includes animal models first. No implant has ever been successful in animals and there have been no human trials that I am aware. Maybe someday something may come along but you should understand that the eustachian tube is not supposed to be "open" all the time. It should briefly open and then close every time you swallow or yawn or even manipulate your pharyngeal muscles by moving your jaw laterally and/or anteriorly. The purpose of the tube is to constantly keep returning your middle ear pressure to the same as your environment's atmospheric pressure. You may think an open tube would be great but a persistently open eustachian tube is known as a "patulous" eustachian tube, which does occur in some patients but a lot less often than people who complain of the symptoms of a "blocked" or dysfunctional ET. The patulous ET creates its own set of very annoying symptoms and can damage your eardrum to the point that surgical intervention may be required. It also affects your hearing even before the damage to the eardrum occurs. ETD has been a thorn in the side of patients and ENT docs forever, and so far limited help. Eustachian tube balloon dilation made a big splash on the scene a few years ago and insurance companies fought tooth and nail to stop it from being performed, and succeeded for about 3 years in delaying it. All the data looked great in the preliminary trials and anecdotally soe patients did improve dramatically but more recent reviews of larger numbers of patients have yielded not so impressive results. i suspect it may start being denied again by insurance companies because of this. The problems lives on, sorry. I put ear tubes in at least a couple of hundred adults for this problem, and some of then underwent the procedure (can be done painlessly in the office wide awake) many times as the tubes generally tend to extrude over time and fall out. Risk is still an issue and about 5 to 7 % of patients end up with non-healing perforation of their eardrum. Can be repaired but often the problem then starts again. Some just choose to live with the perforation because their other symptoms are usually much better (but not always).
      Bottom line....problem that seems to defy reliable long term solution in many patients who have it.

      same here! 50 yrs! Most ENT's I went to dismissed ETD. I saw a medical article yrs ago that talked about the balloon dilation. Have found no one in Georgia or in the nearby states that does that. Tried tubes as an adult, flonase, etc. per an ENT. Waste of time. Mine appears to be too narrow ET.

      34 years here. I do what I think you're describing as cracking your jaw. I'm sure I look kind of odd when I do this 20+ times per day, but it's the only thing that works. Blowing my nose while pinching hurts way too much. My tubes are too small/narrow.

      i’m deaf from my opposite ear too, so eustachian tube dysfunction on my good ear is horrible. it constantly sounds like i’m underwater and the tinnitus makes it worse. exercises, massages, blowing my nose, antihistamines, nasal sprays, and decongestants, haven’t been working. are you ok now? if you don’t mind sharing what has worked for you over the past year? i don’t want to go thru surgery already being half deaf either. i’m seeing my doctor in a few days but given the experience i had at the ER and past doctor visits I’m sure it won’t be taken seriously or accomplish anything :/ thx in advance!

    Not personal assault intended, but you should talk with your supervising physicians regarding the discussion of using nasal steroid sprays off-label for treating ETD. They may have even supported this but there is no evidence that this is effective in adult patients. To summarize the finding from the most recent systematic review of multiple studies on the subject (19 studies were reviewed), typically empirically recommended treatments have not been proven to offer statistically significant benefit. The following statement is the lead of the summarization of the study's conclusion: ..."It is not possible to draw conclusions regarding the effectiveness of any of the interventions for the treatment of adults with an ETD diagnosis, and there is insufficient evidence to recommend a trial of any particular intervention. Further research is needed to address lack of consensus on several issues, including the definition of ETD in adults, its relation to broader middle ear ventilation problems and clear diagnostic criteria."
    With regard to the recommendation to use the nasal steroid in the manner you described, while off label use of any drug remains the purvey of the treating physician, there is no clinical trial that has shown that this method of treatment is effective and, in fact, the contrary is true... there have been trials that demonstrate LACK of evidence to support clinical efficacy of this approach. I am not in favor of censorship but I am in favor of full disclosure.
    The official position of the AAO-HNS is that there is no proven medicinal treatment that has been shown to be effective in terms of providing statistically significant therapeutic benefit to the adult ETD patient. Advising otherwise is perhaps a harmless exercise but it is not supported by the available data. Treating underlying causes is clearly reasonable, provided such cause can be identified, and there is date to support this, but in many cases there is no obvious cause and observation is warranted without pharmacologic treatment in those cases. Intervention should be pursued in the form of providing ventilation if there is evidence of impending problems related to poor ventilation of the middle ear.
    The search for effective management of ETD, particularly in adult patients, is quite telling and sparse. Although sinus surgery was, in at least one study, shown to be statistically beneficial in terms of improving ET function in selected patients with radiographic evidence of significant sinus pathology, other treatment methodologies have not been successful until the arrival of eustachian tube balloon dilation (ETBD). When used in appropriately selected patients, balloon dilation is the first treatment of ETD to receive FDA approval for that stated purpose. The FDA is not what I would consider the ultimate authority on efficacy, but FDA approval did open the door for direct treatment of the eustachian tube (after a roughly 3 year delay following the FDA approval, due to insurance companies stalling the use of this new treatment for the obvious reason they did not want to pay for it). Even so, ETBD has a roughly 35% failure rate. Fortunately there is an extremely low risk profile and, in properly selected patients, very little downside if you exclude the cost of trying the treatment. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a practicing otolaryngology surgeon with > 25 years of experience, and I have no financial interest in any product or treatment.

      The eustachian tube can be seen but it is not helpful unless there is a mass or some other mechanical effect on the tube that can be seen. In its native state the eustachian tube will not appear any different in a patient who has norma function and one who is experiencing symptoms of ET dysfunction. In other words, it will look normal on an MRI (with the very rare exception of someone who has tumor or some other extrinsic mechanical impingement on the structure. Generally, considered to be a waste of money to get MRI for ET dysfunction,

If you look at my first post, you can see a list of other symptoms that came with it (eye throbbing, ear wooshing noise, when i yell my ear vibrates and i become uncomfortable). I believe this happened back in 2018 when i went on my first plane flight. 1 month later after the clicking, i went to my local walk-in and they saw some fluid behind the ear drum. They prescribed Zertec. I then went to the ENT after a few more months because the symptoms got worse. 2 ENTS stated that my ear looked good. MRI said it was fine. Conversely, the tympanometry device read that my ear was all jacked up (i guess the levels were off). ENTS stated that there is nothing they can do. I just live with this now and kinda of ignore it. no pain, other then if i yell really loud or try to sing 😢

    I’m not really convinced on the use of nasal steroid use. She hast explained why this would work. Usually the dysfunction would go on it’s own accord after a few weeks anyway.
    No mention of Otovent or any other air procedure? Usually this has a better result.

    I had tinnitus on and off before COVID. Now it’s constant and has moved up a notch. No pain as such and I’ve had an ear vacuum with no improvement although the clinic said my ear drums are in good condition. I still feel quite congested even though COVID has passed. I’m following the GP advice with a nasal spray and anti histamine. It’s quite an annoyance at night when it’s quieter. Hopefully it passes. I’m flying tomorrow so will spray with the nasal treatment before we go.

    Hello! I’ve been having dizzy episodes & feeling off balance since December 2022. I finally went & saw an ENT specialist. She checked both ears & said my ears looked good & saw no fluid BUT I SOMETIMES FEEL FLUID IN BOTH OF MY EARS. Like, it’s stuck…like it wants to come out but won’t. I did an audio test & passed with flying colors. The ENT specialist looked up my nose & said that my nose was very inflamed, which can cause my Eustachian tubes to swell. So, she prescribed me prednisone. I don’t know if the prednisone is working or not…today is just Day 6 of 12. However, I’m still experiencing dizziness & imbalance. It is the absolute worse. It has caused me to have extreme anxiety & panic attacks. I’m in need of relief! I do not want to have to deal with this any longer. Anybody dealt with something similar?

    • @sclennasanchez423
      @sclennasanchez423 Рік тому +2

      @UNekkk I’m experiencing very similar symptoms. I had been sick with a nasally head cold in December. My right sinus was giving me pressure. When I’d blow my nose my ears would clog for long periods of time. Once the cold was just about gone I woke dizzy like my eyes were moving like wind shield wipers. I was only able to get a phone appointment & dr said it was bppv due to the ear congestion. Told me to take Flonase 2 sprays once a day & meclizine. Said it would take time to go away. Close to a month later I followed up with my dr (I was feeling alot better but still felt “off”) he checked ears & said they were a little red & gave me ear drops, 4 drops 4xs a day. After 2.5 days I was feeling dizzy again! Woke middle of the night so unbalanced. By morning I felt ok & had my dh put ear drops in. On right side instant vertigo, worse than I ever had. Dr told me not to take anymore (duh) but I’ve been messed up since. I feel crackling, popping every time I swallow. It’s horrible. Have a dr appointment in a week & gonna see if I can get referral to an ENT.

      @@sclennasanchez423 Yes, the wooziness/dizziness is the absolute worse! All of this started when I caught the flu in November 2022. My left ear got clogged & stayed clogged for days. I ended up having to have my ear irrigated. I followed up with my PCP & was told that I had an ear infection & fluid in my ear. However, when I went to the ENT Specialist, she didn’t see any fluid in my ear. She had me take prednisone bc my nose was inflamed but I stopped after Day 6 bc it just made my anxiety worse. My main complaint is the random wooziness. Some days I wake up, I’m fine. But other days are just scary. Between my PCP & ENT Specialist, I’ve been told to use Flonase twice a day & take cetirizine at night. Bc my main complaint is the wooziness, I’m scheduled for a VNG Test soon. I was told that this is a dizzy test where you’re purposely “made” dizzy so that the doctor can attempt to determine where the dizziness is coming from??? I “googled” the procedure & from what I read, this test examines your inner ears & portions of your brain for results. I’m really looking forward to the test bc I just want relief from all of this. It has been the worst experience of my life. It’s going on 3 long months 😩 I feel a lot better than I did before but whew, some days are still challenging.

    I healed my ETD. here is how. first of all. your body can heal anything. just have faith. secondly. most health issues is caused by food, our dietary and lifestyle choices. my opinion for this issue is mucus and infections and solution is DETOX and mucus free diet. it's been 5 years since I became vegetarian and right after vegan, then raw vegan and fruitarian. I am healed now. 80% of my diet is fruit, the rest veggies or cooked foods if I don't have ripe fruit. Only healthy diet and a KEY for properly functioning body is Whole food plant based diet. (no oils like olive or coco and as much fruit as possible) So get a juicer and juice the f*ck up. and FYI don't be afraid of fruit sugar. sugar in its natural form as fruit is healthy in any amount. on the other hand processed sugar is different... so it took me few years to heal my ETD but if I did some extreme fasting protocol right away, it would take few months in my opinion. btw I don't reckon long water fast. only juice fast or 100% fruit diet. Fruit heals, fruit is nature's gift which have cellular-repairing properties that heals damaged DNA.
