  • It's all about the tires, my friends! The Redcat Gen8 V2 has its new 21T 550 motor, but the servo and front portals needed attention. Before that, new tires should have been the very next upgrade for the Gen 8 - as testing showed!
    Tires that really delivered results: Pro-Line BF Goodridge Krawler 4.75" with Predator compound. Here's the tire upgrade on the Gen 8 V2: • A FAIR Fight! Gen 8 V2...

    Nice video! Agreed regarding the stock tires……..they look so good but leave a lot to be desired. Will be tucking my bumpers slightly too, thanks for the tip!

    Yeah, tires make all the difference for sure! The stock ones look cool and that's about it!

      I bet they'd be ok in mud, at least. They'd clear the lugs and probably wear pretty well too.
      I have an epic tire test coming soon, so we'll see where they may shine then!

    With proper tires fitted the Gen 8 becomes a climbing animal! I have cheapo injora 1.9 hyrax copies in 4.75 diameter and cheapo aluminum wheels (non vented configuration) and my Genny claws her way up just about anything wet or dry running 3s stock electronics with Treal brass panhard and link mounts as well as steel cnc trans and transfer case gears, although its weak and slow I'm still using the stock steering servo until it gives up.. Make sure you use thread locker on the differential pinion shaft bolt so you don't drop and lose your driveshafts and lose your pinion bearing or shafts like I almost did, luckily I found the missing half of my front shaft with the pinion bearing still attached, good luck Bro Have fun!

      Heh, I'd believe it. I just spent 3 or 4 hours yesterday filming an epic 9 tire round-up, including the stock gen 8 V2 tires and the hyrax copies you've got (plus the real ones, among others!) That video will drop in the next week or so. Cheers!

    I look forward to the next part on this. I put a 35T on mine, which I love for the type of rock crawling I do. I’ve put on the same portal covers. And LoL mine is a v1, so I upgraded the servo to a 20kg brushed two years ago, which is worse than the one you replaced! I mentioned in a comment on another of your videos, that I ground and drilled the front bumper a lot to pull it in the equivalent of two notches. And I got an idea from another UA-camr on a way to modify the body to invert the the sliders. They were always getting hung up on things for me. I’m still running stock tires, and am undecided on what to do about that. I will check your other videos. Great stuff!

      Thanks for the detailed information. I haven't had a problem with the sliders and I'm still running the stock tires too - though I've wrapped solder around the wheels to add weight (they now weigh 170g up front and 155g on the rear). My bumpers are only in one notch but it all helps!

    Best thing to do is put some 90mm shocks on , and get the ssd panhard bracket on axle . That will change that truck completely. Also the foams in those tires NEED to break in . The tires are actually decent. But those first 2 upgrades are essential

      Interesting, thanks for the tips.
      I'm editing together a huge tire comparison right now and yeah, these tires aren't too bad when all else is equal. Cheers :)

    Did you use brass portal covers on all four corners or just the front?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  2 роки тому +2

      Just the front. Wouldn't want to add yet more weight to the already heavy rig unnecessarily - I don't think it'd be worth it for the rears. You could do so and it might help in some situations, but my feeling is overall it would be a net loss to performance.

    I’ve seen a couple videos where you mention it needing a better drag brake, I assume you did but on the stock ESC did you move the jumper to give it a 100% drag brake and it still was lacking? I hadn’t moved my jumper plug when I first got mine and yeah the drag sucked but after I moved it the drag brake, in my opinion was pretty great 👍🏻 just curious?

    • @UpperLeftRC
      @UpperLeftRC 2 роки тому +1

      Never mind I somehow missed the video where you did the 30 degree slope explaining all the drag brake issues, yeah I didn’t think about downhill forward momentum, I usually only crawl up to a flat surface and it holds well when stopped on an incline but downhill with even a touch of throttle and it can run away on you pretty quick :)

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  2 роки тому

      Heh that's pretty much exactly the reply I was compiling in my mind as I read your first comment, yeah! Although some folks here didn't experience the same issue, so there may be a quality control element with the motor. Unsure about that, but certainly, replacing mine with the Holmes 21T 550 did the trick!

  • @mxsty8829

    Do you know how to change the drag brake %? Great vid btw

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Рік тому +1

      Thanks. There's a jumper for the drag brake but it's basic and I found the stock motor insufficient. You'll maybe find this video useful

    Doesn't look like you jave moved your axles outward for a better approach angle , made a good difference on mine and yes tires are junk
