First of all, Happy Holidays Henry and everyone on the channel! Season's Greetings from Alberta, Canada! :). I'm not a professional photographer, so for me it's grab your gear, go out, shoot, and enjoy the nature! And the philosophy is you get what the day prepared for you. I think planning may get you frustrated even more, because you don't always get what you planned for, right. And on the contrary, when you don't plan and get an epic day in terms of conditions, you get 110% of satisfaction out of the blue. At least that is my approach to photography. Keep on cracking, mate! 👍

I'm from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire and often visit West Nab and Deer Hill which overlook the Wessenden valley and its four reservoirs. The next time I go there I'll just sit and enjoy the scenery instead of concentrating on my photography! Thanks for your inspiration.

Hi Henry - I find myself overdosing on youtube photography channels (because I, like you just can't get enough of this photographic creativity). You have passion in spade loads, and have to say your always number 1 port of call to fire up that passion. Just wish I was living where you you do rather than pretty flat Essex. Please carry on your great VLOGs. Have yourself a Very Merry Xmas. Here's hoping for a stunning New Year!..... You know "Top Draw". ATB & take care:-)

Henry, you said near the end of this video that you wish you could give something to everyone. You do. You share your passion and inspire people to get out and do more with their photography. I’ve always planned and regularly failed to get the shots I’ve been looking for, which is so disheartening. I’m now going to follow your advice in this video, not planning but just getting out into the countryside with my camera with no expectations of a shot and see what happens. Merry Christmas to you and yours from Pontypridd in the South Wales Valleys. 🎅

As I have mentioned in a previous comment, I am not a landscape photographer (mostly concerts, just not in 2020) but I turned to shooting a lot of local landscapes and woodlands this year because of known circumstances. I started to follow a few landscape photographers here on UA-cam, you being one of them. Of all the times I went out taking my camera(s) with me, there were 3 times that I actually planned something. The other times I just went out and reacted to whatever I would come across and I must say that's the way I prefer it. Wishing you a Merry Christmas from the most southern part of the Netherlands.

Fabulous video Henry! The picture of the tree turned out very well for a quick snapshot. And that second image, that one is a keeper for sure, what a killer surprise to come across those stone structures all lined up in a row! I like the abstract fog picture, sets a nice mood. And that pond picture at the end, again another stunning keeper! My photography has been a bit frustrating lately so your enthusiasm is helping me get through. Merry Christmas from Seattle, WA USA. 826 comments! Forgive me if this has already been mentioned but the title of that peak ‘the Lion and the Lamb’ is so apt at Christmas time as as they are both names for Jesus mentioned in Scripture - ‘The Lion of Judah’ and ‘The Lamb of God’ - your picture just fits the theme so well. Thank you.

    Merry Christmas Henry!
I'm from the Netherlands and only slightly jealous (...) that you have such amazing vistas and landscapes to roam and shoot - however, I do feel inspired to see what I can draw from Dutch landscapes. I'm relatively new to actually taming a proper dslr camera (I've enjoyed photography for decades, though - and it's the witch, not the wand, so I have captured some interesting pictures over the years) and you teach me a lot. I love how you increasingly vibe with the land, getting stoked and energized, and how it translates into your pictures. As you have philosophized as well - it somehow seems to be the case that the photographer's energy determines a lot in the end result. I believe this is a quantum physical effect (would make sense, since the observer determines how light behaves - right?) but I have no scientific way to prove this ;-) But it would make sense that our connection to what we see is non-local (what we see actually communicates back to us) and that this is a quality a good photographer has - to deeply connect to the world and 'capture' what one senses.
Maybe you'll enjoy listening to this interview with Joel Meyerowitz www.ibarionex.net/thecandidframe/2018/3/16/the-candid-frame-412-joel-meyerowitz since he describes this dance with the phenomena one observes so very eloquently and with such (wise!) zest.
I lived in Yorkshire for a couple of months in the past and I have experienced one of the most impressive, 'trance like' hikes there. There's just something about Britain ... ;-)
Wishing you well through the Brexit goings on and the Corona situation. We're very lucky that our images and words can still travel freely!
    Cheers,
    Annedien
(sounds a bit like Anadin ;-)
PS: Take it easy on darkening the skies in post to make it more dramatic, there's a fine line between reinforcing an image and a gimmick ;-)

Henry - you are one of the most chilled and positive landscape photographers on UA-cam and I look forward to watching your videos after a stressful day in the office. I live on the edge of Salisbury Plain which for many people would be a dream location I’m sure, but it’s so flat and featureless. As with all of us at the moment, the current travel restrictions prevent me from seeking out more photographic locations so for now, your videos are providing me with the next best thing - the dream of being able to visit the beautiful countryside that you capture on film and in print. If you haven’t selected the recipient of the Lion & The Lamb yet, I would love a copy 😊. In the meantime, I look forward to the next video 👍

I really enjoy your Bowland vlogs as it reminds me of my walking trips there in the 1990's when I lived in Coventry. It really was a forbidden place with a permissive access on a defined path up to Ward Stone that was often closed for shooting. Highlights included a stay at Slaidburn YHA and a retreat from Fair Snape Fell in a thunderstorm to shelter at Langden Castle. I managed to cover most of the fells over several visits but at least one trip was abandoned due to path closure, sadly I can't find the pictures in my loft archive. I have followed you all year and thoroughly enjoyed all your vlogs.
You are by far the most enthusiastic UA-camr in the photography game
I have taken the most amount of photos this year and definitely captured my best to date
Covid has been the worst thing to hit us since the world wars but it has allowed me and probably thousands of people to see the seasons instead of them passing us by.
Hopefully next year will be a better one
    Keep up the good work
    Out!!!! 😊

From New Delhi, India: I love your video presentations and photographic creations, especially because I find them so challenging / invigorating. You seem to beam energy in all directions ;). You are proof that sincerity, enthusiasm and hard work always pay off. I use M43 gear but find that the techniques remain more or less the same. So MERRY CHRISTMAS and wish you an even better 2021. BTW, the sound quality in this video was a bit of a let down; hope you'll look into it. Cheers !

Merry Christmas Henry. Thoroughly enjoyed your vids during the year. I really liked the long focal length shot of the fells/layers...it worked for me - very calming image. Good luck for 2021. Bob from Blackburn, Lancashire 😊 OUT!

    Merry Christmas Henry!
Thank you so much for all the video’s this year. It has been a very hard year for many people under is, hope its going to be better in 2021. I have the same setup of gear that you have and i learn al lot of your videos. You come to places i just can dream off. Here in Belgium there is not so much “free space” as there is in the UK. But everytime i see a new video of you i can’t wait to go out and take pictures.
Thank you Henri for that, so i wish you plesant holidays and a stunning 2021. Greetz Frank (Alstamarisphotography) from Belgium.

I’ll send a Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you Henry from Germany. Thank you for your videos that inspire me all the time to go out and shoot more landscape and help me to get better every time. Being a portrait photographer this helped me a lot going out in the beautiful surroundings I live in to shoot more landscape. Greetings from the Holsteinische Schweiz.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours, Henry...from Bend in Central Oregon, USA!
It's just after 4pm Christmas Eve here as I write this...thanks much for not only today's present but all the others you've posted throughout this crazy-ass year. I've learned a ton and have greatly enjoyed the "travelogue" part of your adventures as well.
I think some of the problem in getting "jaded" is that most everyone has a cellular phone these days and many can take some pretty decent photos. I can (and have) shot some RAW photos with my Samsung Note 10+ by putting it into "pro" mode", and I think that convenience can make us a bit lazy at times. Guess it's a question/choice of "snap and move on" vs. taking the time to imagine an actual composition and taking the proper amount of time to do a good set up.
Where do YOU draw the line between snapping a phone pic and taking the time to set up your big camera? For example, were you tempted to just simply snap a phone pic of that lonely tree, knowing that it wasn't going to be your greatest composition? Or, in the spirit of why you were there in the first place, was digging out your big camera part of getting into the mood for what was to come?
    Cheers...fair winds and calm seas!
