Thank you, Nigel! The mutual dialogue helped in ways you can't imagine. Hearing someone being coached in real-time made me feel like I was with you. If you could do this a couple of times a year, it would be pure gold!
Bravo to Matt for being brave enough to take this on knowing the world gets to see it. Bravo to Nigel for doing this. I thoroughly enjoyed it and as always I come away from an ND video having learned something.
Broke my heart when he said, I don't do panos as there are nowhere to show them on social media, curse you social media... Enjoyed the conversation and suggestions in todays video. Keep these types of videos coming.... you might have found a costar.
VERO is a great social media platform for panos as you can use it on a desktop so panos look great and you can post images at a much higher resolution the FB and Instagram. I’m surprised Nigel didn’t mention VERO to Matt as he is on there but hasn’t posted anything recently.
This video was so nice, Nigel this is really a gem because the tips you give whilst at the same time listening to the explanation of the beginner is so important. You re not patronising like so many are when they give tips and that really shows who you are as a person. I think you have a great series with this subject on cooperating with begginers because we (those who watch your videos) kind of identify ourselves so much with being a beginner and seeing you in real life situation being so patient and listening to the ideas of the beginner is just amazing. I dont really shoot landscapes but your tips overall have helped me a lot in cityscapes and street scenes. Lovely video Nigel! Have a lovely day!
Interestingly I run a community based photography program where I teach young people with anxiety depression and other issues Photography it's very gross roots kind of stuff and not technical and essentially what we do is take young people out into the environment so that they can feel calm and peace by peace we teach them Photography. I've been doing this program in Western Australia for quite awhile now as I am in a addictions counsellor by day but I also enjoy my photography professionally but I wanted to get back this giving Back process is teaching other people.
I am going full time as a landscape photographer in a year and this is exactly what I wanted to do too! I suffer with depression and find my photography is a massive benefit to my mental health and would love to help others like me.
@@SimonLewis_photography have a look in your local area to see if you can find some schools or youth centres that would be willing to turn some time into Photography. I've done it so funding it I got about 10 small cameras and then I designed the program which is a mindfulness based way of teaching
Love this idea, and he will remember this forever. I really do like both photos, but if I had to pick one, it would be yours, Nigel. I know you ask for an idea....how about shooting in the afternoon... and working with the challenge of bad light. The reason is that you can't always go out to take pictures in perfect light, but you want to get out there. Just an idea. Thanks again for all that you do! I have learned so much from you!
For me it's one of your best videos, I liked the way you gave constructive advice without been too critical of Matt's ideas. I would, like to see you do a video on somewhere you haven't been before and give advice on how you decide a composition and maybe do something out of your usual comfort zone.. Ps I preferred your photo over Matt's Great work, keep it going Nigel....
A fun and interesting episode! A replay with Matt in the woods would be fun to see. You are good with the details Nigel. I think Matt was satisfied and learned something.
Great video. I would actually love to see more of this exact thing - just in different types of locations - maybe a city one, or maybe one at a park, etc. This was _very_ helpful! I would also love to see a similar style video, but focused around getting the exposure settings for the scene - eg: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO - and your thoughts behind _why_ the certain settings were picked. As a beginner, that’s one of the things I’m always wrestling with - intentional settings in manual - and how they _interplay_ with the outcome of the shot
Nigel I really like this type of format . Combination informal conversation ( interview style)/ teaching and hands on which comes quite close to the experience those who come in workshops with you experience but allows your viewers to get the one on one feel of teaching at home ! Well done my friend 😍
As others have said, this is excellent. More please. Taking someone new to printing through the basics would be useful. I thought Matt’s print was awesome.
This was incredibly helpful! The positive interaction between Nigel and Matt, and the tips and tricks on what to look out for in the field to make compositions just that little bit better.... a great format! Thanks also to Matt for taking up the challenge! Many thanks to both of you!
Great video - nice to see someone working with APS-C gear (because a $1000 lens costs more than my camera and five lenses put together). I’m a great admirer of black & white photography, and I’d love to see a video on the best ways to go about shooting with that specifically in mind, or perhaps when a photo is better off in color, and when it might be better to go monochromatic. And yes, your vertical shot with the separation of the fence from the background. Sans rock.
That was a super idea and super interesting to watch. And very nice to see the location, the work and the thinking regarding the composition and the edit work. Liked the format of the video. Nice.
I’m not a landscape photographer, my focus is street, architecture, and product photography, but I've just discovered this channel and decided to give this video a watch. I was hooked! The format was fantastic, and it was great to see the journey unfold. Matt did exceptionally well under your guidance, and his final shot was a keeper. It’s amazing how small, professional tweaks make such a difference-it’s like, 'Why didn’t I see that?' But Matt did very well and showed real promise. I’d love to see more videos like this. The mix of concept, location scouting, shooting, and post-processing is inspiring, especially for someone like me who’s considering giving landscape photography a try and this video has inspired me to do so. Maybe future videos could explore this format further, even as part of an educational series. Including enthusiasts like Matt really highlights the learning process in a relatable way. As for the prints-Nigel’s was my favourite. There’s something about the eye of a pro that captures a little extra magic. That said, Matt’s shot was fantastic, and I’d proudly frame it. Keep up the great work, Matt-you’re on your way to becoming an excellent landscape photographer. All the best fellas. Liked and subscribed!
This is exactly the type of video that I have been looking for on YT! A real-time, beginner friendly demo of the composition process that is also not afraid to show the dirty/muddy bits. Nigel, I hope you have the opportunity to post another similar videos which showcase different types of photography challenges. Between Matt's zen landscape image and Nigel's almost whimsical portrait, It's difficult to pick a clear favourite as I like both for different reasons. Cheers!
Thank you both! It's always fascinating to participate in the process and thoughts of how you approach a composition. I would like to see a video about what photography options you have in the middle of the day with the bright sun shining Google Übersetzer
Excellent video. The whole concept and execution were great. Watching someone who has developed skills honing those skills, is of interest to me. That Matt is mostly there, needing only some tweaking advice, says a lot about Matt and his photographic journey. Thanks and cheers to you both.
I love this format!! Hope you bring this back every now and then!! And yes, with editing differences/instructions!! I will definitely give panos a shot and I just started printing!
Really enjoyed this conversation in the field. Your videos explaining your process are always good but the exchange of ideas and opinions takes it to the next level. Any time you bring us along on your shoots is good stuff. Thanks!
Nigel, More videos on printing please. Paper choices, printer choices, ICC profiles, etc. As you mentioned in the video, people don't print nearly enough any more and you doing a video talking about why you print may encourage some of your viewers to start. Rock edited out
This is such a fun and fantastic video!!! Absolutely love the live commentary on what is and isn't working composition wise, and working through how to make it better in the field!!!
Probably the best tutorial I have seen. Especially the cleaning-up-your-composition bit was very usefull! Thanks for spending so much time to make us better photographers and for your beautiful pictures.
No matter how long I’ve done photography or running or cycling, it’s so important to be willing to be humble and reinvent myself and spend time with people willing to teach me. My favorite parts of a photo workshop is lining up to take a landscape image and sharing ideas with my fellow participants. That’s what I love about Nigel’s content, I learn something new every time.
This is your most enjoyable video by far I feel. Really interesting to see your thoughts and explain your views to someone and see them feeling great and proud of their work.
Love the structure of this video, even photographing for a long time you can fall into some easy traps and the advice and critique is a great way to think about our own images.
Greetings from Seattle. Great video, Nigel, and a great way to teach someone in the field as well as those of us who get to come along via video. I vote for more of these kinds of videos. Very effective.
I really like this one on one approach to finding the right composition in less spectacular shooting locations. Great idea Nigel! Would love to see more in the future. Thanks for sharing!
Another vote for this concept! A lot of value in this type of video. Years ago, many of the photography channels did more of this type of 'educational' process. But I feel it's been lost, with the assumption that most viewers today understand the basics. While the technical side of photography is fairly straight forward, I believe composition is where most amateurs struggle, whether they recognize it or not. Loved the real time suggestions and thought processes between you both. Like being in a one-on-one workshop.
Matt, you're a brave photographer to allow your work to be discussed & analyzed, even by a nice guy like Nigel. Thanks for sharing your experience working outside the proverbial comfort box.
I stopped at 14mins just to pass comment on Matts backpack. When he changed lens, I saw what he was carrying, that’s a lot of gear, and whenever I carried that much, my mind was on have I got the right gear on, more than have I got the best composition. Of the two final images, I prefer Nigel’s photo, because I would have taken Matts shot too, not realising there was a better angle available. Future videos, this was a great exercise for me, trying to eliminate errors before I leave site. You mentioned Pano’s, I love them and would enjoy a video on them. I went to Durdle Door a few weeks ago, and was so unhappy with what I had when I got home. Worse as it’s a 6 hour round trip for me.
Great video Nigel! Nice to see this 'student and teacher' interaction in the field and watch Matt improve throughout the shoot. An idea for a video? Maybe see what you can do with a disposable camera were it all comes down to composition and that one click?
Please do another video like this. I feel like I learned so much more from this than I have any other photography video from anyone. Maybe include the settings and why on a couple of the shots. Amazing video!
Brilliant format, I think it works really well and could be used to demonstrate more aspects of our craft e.g. when and how to focus stack and hyperfocal focussing, how to get exposure right and decide on shutter speed and aperture etc.
That was a wonderful video! I feel its great to cover aspect basics again and again. As I grow as a photographer, I'm pretty basic myself, my view of the world around me evolves again and again too!
Great video Nigel. It was good seeing you giving tuition to Matt. The scenery was superb and the location looked great. The images were good too. Well done to you both.
Having done a workshop with you Nigel I'd say he is in amazing hands. I remember you teaching us in the workshop. You were very detailed and amazingly patient with your instructions. I learned alot then
Just getting to this video now, Nigel. Great execution of a good suggestion. Having never taken a class orbeen in a workshop, this was so beneficial. Kudos to Matt, too. He did a great job of explaining his thinking and rationale for his compositions. I'd love to know how long you were in the field taking those shots together. Sprinkliing in these kinds of videos every once in a while would be a great addition to your repertoire. Thanks so much to both of you!
Really lovely photos both of you! I agree with the person who suggested Part II with Matt in a different location, perhaps woodland photo shoot. Bravo!!
Wow, that was a great change of pace, I actually loved the pano the best, it inspires me to see if I can do a good panorama. Of the two end prints, I think that I like the Matt shot, I like that the angle shows everything is more in balance, where the fence is the star of the show as the leading line. Walking him through the composition experience was really enlightening. I would love to see you take him or, another less experienced photographer in the woods go through that for a few woodland shots, to a new spot that you do not have a solid target. I think a lot of us would benefit. If you were to select me, I like the "Rock edited in" version. Love it. Thank you!
First of all, congrats to Matt on a terrific picture! I do tend to prefer a more landscape look, so I actually prefer his. Thanks to Nigel for sharing with Matt (and us!)
well of course we need to see the first trip in the new van video !!! keep the rock in it can serve as my reminder to check my edges hanging in my office
Brilliant I'm so pleased you did the video of the learning proses. I always set up a shot then criticise my self on what I could do to get it better. Sometimes works. I quite like matts photo. More like this please.
I really enjoyed this. I have watched it twice! Great tips I really appreciated the thought process, what you saw and how to tweak it! That was the best I’ve seen in a while. Thank you😊🎉
Brilliant video and reminded me of a few workshops and 1-2-1s I've done in the past to improve my skills. After two years he's doing really well, but it was good to see that you could still open his eyes to a few things that he'd overlooked, particularly panoramas. Landscape photography is really all about being in the right place at the right time, but so often the promised conditions don't materialise how we would like them to. This is where being able to adapt to the prevailing conditions you're faced within any chosen location is an essential skill to learn and would make a good topic for a video. One of the key things with this skill is having the level of field skills, so you know what conditions best suit each different type of location and both different times of the day and also different times of the year too. I have to confess it's an area I struggle with a bit. I've lost count of the number of times I went out to recce a location and chose the wrong time of day and often the wrong time of year too! As a result, I drew a complete blank on numerous occasions and this knocks your confidence as a photographer. I know you argue that you just have to get out there, but you do need a purpose and you need to be able to adapt what you're doing to suit the prevailing conditions you have. Keep up the good work, oh and I've just invested in a Z6 III with the 14-30mm and 28-400mm after watching a couple of your videos from earlier this year.😉
This is a great idea for a video, hope to see more like it, and well done to who ever thought about it, I learnt a lot from it,👍 thanks to you both. Now the big question 🤔🤔 I was very pleased with myself because I spotted the overlap on Mats fence post, which I picked up Subconsciously from earlier in the video, when you mentioned it on another photo, so just because I can’t get it out of my head, and it’s going to make me consciously remember for when I take one like that, sorry I’m going with Mats. 👍👍👍 because if he hadn’t done that I wouldn’t be thinking about now. 👍👍
Good job Matt! Fantastic video and idea. There's a good chance this is too weird of an idea, but I was trying to think outside of the box. A randomizer to pick a location (most likely your local woodlands for ease), your camera body, one lens, and maybe one accessory (polarizer or tripod, etc). And then trying to get the best possible images with what was randomly chosen.
Great video to look at! So many useful ideas and I really like, that you critisise in a so empathic way!! Just great! I wish you could do more of this. Thank you Nigel! Thank you Matt, I'd pick your shot ;-)
Brilliant video, Nigel! This really reminded me to not just set my tripod up for a composition, take the shot and keep looking for another composition somewhere else. But to stay in the scene where i am and try to see it with different perspectives, which might result in finding another composition within the scene. Would love to see more videos exactly like this one, in different landscapes.
This was a super helpful video! I appreciate the composition tips, as I think it's an area most beginners struggle with. Thank you. More videos like this one please.
What a great experience for Matt to have you at his side in the field giving him on the spot critique and in the studio to help him along. I like this concept and think additional videos of this nature would help. Maybe someone with experience who is in a creative rut...haven't we all been there?
Very well-done video. It was so valuable 😃 Thank you for that 🙂 My idea for the future video is to take a shot (not really important of what) and send it to some other professional landscape photographers in order to edit them. Then you'd run through them and talk about the edit of each. I know somebody has already done it on UA-cam, but you could encourage other photographers and do this in your own style. Anyway thank you for your valuable footage 😊
Loved this video. Would love a video like this where you show someone around a point and shoot camera, best settings, made in similar style to this one. Thanks for all you do!
Great video & and tutorial, Nigel and Matt. Several comments have mentioned how well you each worked together and value it brought to the video. One thing, among many, I took away from video was the way you used a cell phone as a preliminary composition tool. I also enjoyed the panorama discussion and shot techniques. I agree with other comments that an addtional series of beginner videos with both you covering low light situations, golden hour shots, depth of field discussions would be very interesting. In the end I feel a bit more intrigued by Nigel's photo due to the prospective, however I enjoyed Matt's effort as well ! Keep up the great work both of you. We look forward to seeing more of these types of interaction and tutorials. Thank you for everything you do !!
This was fun. Maybe an episode with someone even more of a "beginner". I think Matt is really beyond that level don't you think?! He knows a lot already. And having said that, I'll pick his as my favorite!!
Great idea and liked how you were able to help Matt. Really thought his printed photo was top notch. Idea for other videos - the effects of aspect ratio - what can work better (square, 16x9, 5x4) and does it provide a different feel to the photo
Thank you for the informative video, Nigel. I hear quite often that working on a project will massively improve one’s photography. Personally I would like to see how you choose a project with locations closer to you. The thought process of creating, processing and put together photos for project. Thank you
Great video Nigel and Matt. Bravo to Matt for throwing on a polariser for the pano to darken the small area of water. My mind probably would not have figured that out (the small details make a big difference). I think there may well be a 6 monthly series here as we chart Matt's progress!
This is a great video!! It’s interesting how two photographers look at things differently but that human nature.. It would be interesting to go out with other photographers and compare the difference in perspective and style!! Rock in!
Awesome video! Felt like I was going back to photography school 📷 I would love to see more videos similar to this one because it was so helpful and gave me things to think about in setting up compositions. Both images were amazing but I would have to go with Matt. Great coaching Nigel!
This is one of your best videos ever! I learned a lot. Also, I always wondered what photography session with a client looks like, and this was also a window into that.
Excellent way to teach and learn ! Thank you for this great proposal and would appreciate if you could do this some more times. My preference goes to Matt's photo for the color harmony and the landscape balance.
This was an excellent video. I really appreciated this format. the tips gave me something to think about. I'd like to see some photos using lights, not necessarily nighttime, but getting toward dusk with buildings and machines with lights as a defining part of the image. Also, co-starring Nigel makes it great.
Hi Nigel. I enjoyed the video as usual. It was nice to see you out teaching Matt different ways to help him get a better composition. I must admit some of the idea's helped me too. I think that if Matt was out with you again it would be interesting to see a seascape from a beach with rocks and long exposures to get a balanced image and would challenge him. I liked both the image's, but i thought the one Matt took was my favourite. Well done Matt. I look forward to seeing your next video.
Thank you, Nigel! The mutual dialogue helped in ways you can't imagine. Hearing someone being coached in real-time made me feel like I was with you. If you could do this a couple of times a year, it would be pure gold!

Brilliant format, I think it works really well and could be used to demonstrate more aspects of our craft e.g. when and how to focus stack and hyperfocal focussing, how to get exposure right and decide on shutter speed and aperture etc.
Yes, please... more videos coaching new photographers on composition!
That was a wonderful video! I feel its great to cover aspect basics again and again. As I grow as a photographer, I'm pretty basic myself, my view of the world around me evolves again and again too!
I really love this type of content. Especially the bit about visual weight. I would like to see more like this. Thanks Nigel & Matt!
I learned alot then
Such a great video talking through the concepts in real time, so much better than just reading about all these composition concepts
Yes Nigel! That video is outside the box and to me in any case unique. Thank you some good learning here 👌
Really lovely photos both of you!
Brilliant video. Would love to see more like this.
Love this video. Going through the whole thought process is so helpful.
Thank U
Looking forward to more videos like this.
Really liked this video Nigel and would love to see more where you go on location with folks trying to fine tune the craft of photography. Excellent.
Would love to see a similar video but with something like woodland photography. I really enjoyed learning from this video.
I loved Matt’s edits. ❤. What a great teacher and pupil combo. ❤. Maybe you could have two pupils next time Nigel. Dare you Lol 🤣
Thank you
Świetna forma prezentacji i praktycznej nauki Fotografowania w plenerze. Dziękuję!
Nice to see the interaction between both of you. Team.matt on this photo.
Nigels editing procees for his books .
Great video Nigel and Matt. Bravo to Matt for throwing on a polariser for the pano to darken the small area of water. My mind probably would not have figured that out (the small details make a big difference). I think there may well be a 6 monthly series here as we chart Matt's progress!
Thank you so much Nigel !!! This video is so helpful for composition
The tip about the reflection not cutting the horizon, and using the polariser to darken the water thereby making the reeds stand out more, were great
Nice format. I liked this. Matt was brave but a quick learner!
Excellent video Nigel! I learned a number of composition techniques from it. Nice work!
Great video, I like the interaction between you two. Both pictures are very good, considering the dull lighting.
Really enjoyed this video. Thanks to you both. A great idea. I like both images equally well, so you teach well, Nigel.
Kudos to Matt! I really can't decide which picture is the better. So maybe the stone in the border renders verdict.
Love this!!! More please.
Love this video, and i like that you are like a teacher now😃
Great video. Loved the shot at Blea Tarn took me back to Christmas Day last year when I was there.
