  • Trying a North South load in a East West designed Jotul f400 wood stove. Cherry and Oak with Top down set up and started with White pine Pine cones straight from the backyard. No accelerants or other starters used.

    Thanks for sharing!
I never would have guessed, pine cones as fire starter!

Yes Thanks, Not all pine cones work as well as these ones. They come from the White pine Tree. You can see the white sap on the tips of the cones, that is what makes them light so easily.

Great video, thank you for making it. Did you adjust the primary air during this video? Or is this just full throttle. Thanks.

I started to turn down draft just before the 22:30 mark.
I've got a new North/South East/West Combo load Top Down Burn clip coming soon.

Love your videos and your enthousiasm for making a fire.
North-south, is that for less risk of damaging the glass ?
We have a Jotul 121 and it burns great, but I wish to see the fire and think about buying a f400 .
How big is the risk of breaking the glass or scratching the glass ?
Did you ever have problems with the glass ?
Is it a good idea to buy already a spare glass when buying the stove ?

Yes North South greatly reduces the chance of any splits rolling onto the ceramic glass or even out the door. That being said East West, properly set up, is pretty safe. The fire also burns a bit better with increased airflow with the North South set up. The problem with North South though is you can only fit about 8"- 9" long pieces in.
Big glass doors that allow you to see the fire is great in my opinion.
Breaking the ceramic is not a great risk. The 1 time our ceramic glass broke was when my wife accidently hit it with the heavy metal poker.
Hot fires an DRY Seasoned wood will keep the glass mostly clean. Just need to wipe the "dust" off every few days. (Not black tarlike soot)
I don't keep a spare piece of ceramic glass. They are not difficult to get but are over $125 at least.

@@comonbabylightmyfireburnHere in Europ you can get them new.
They now also have ceramic catalyzer material in it. I believe in the US they had that already longer.

Oh sorry, I must correct, cos there is no catalytic material in the stove, its just some veramic or something,
but it burns great. Its still warm outside, but I'm burning the new Jotul with doors open and it blazes. Nice.@@comonbabylightmyfireburn
