Jotul Woodstove Draft lever Sticking

Jotul f400 draft lever is sticking. Let’s take it apart and fix it. This should be similar on a few Jotul woodstoves. I keep calling a Bolt a Nut at the end of this, and for those observant people i did not show the final hand tightening of the Left side Bolt holding the dog house door top. The 2 holes in the "dog house" cover are "Boost Air" feeds to the front of the Fire. The rest of the air ...

Burn rate set 17 minutes after reload for overnight burn in Jotul f400

This is showing how the burn rate looks when set for an overnight burn. Wood is mostly oak splits and a piece of cherry. Stove pipe temp is running around 350f on the exterior of the single wall stove pipe 10” above flue collar on Jotul outlet.
Is this a good Burn rate for an Overnight Fire in a Jotul f400?

    Looks a little heavy to me. Maybe shut the air down a little sooner? If you can maintain a pipe temp of 200-250 you may see a little less flame and a longer burn.

    I just purchased a used F400 for a decent price. Is there a minimum chimney length for proper draw on these secondary burn stoves? I currently use a Schrader Fireplace with double doors. No issues there with a 13 foot chimney.

    With respect to the comment below (@sebastian...) the more air, the hotter the fire, the shorter the burn. Unburned coals from an overnight burn are not a problem; if they're still "alive" they easily start the morning fire. Using Biobrick type fuel can give a long, slow burn with lots of morning embers, but less heat output per hour and at higher cost. The f400 just doesn't have a big enough firebox for overnight warm burns whether with wood or the aforementioned fuel. For "long" burns with the f400 using wood, I would aim for 300 degrees to start (stovetop temp, not stove pipe), and don't go higher. Set the damper lever maybe a quarter of its range from the left side or less. Stack the wood densely. You might get 3-4 hrs depending on wood type, preferably well seasoned oak or similar, and your glass will likely end up quite dirty. A hot fire in the morning that reaches around 500 degrees for several minutes will burn off most of the carbon on the window and also any creosote in the stovebox and up the chimney. This has been my method of burning for over a decade on my f400, and my chimney (double walled stainless steel 6" pipe) hasn't had any creosote issues as confirmed by annual cleanings from a chimneysweep. I'm located in central Massachusetts. BTW, your video above has yellow to orange flame indicating too much oxygen. I would aim for a more blueish flame coming from your secondary burn holes as this indicates a more efficient burn.

    Hey, I heard iif you only half load the stove, the airwash doesn't do its job properly. So, apparently, the glass doesn't stay clean. Is that actually true?"

    • @comonbabylightmyfireburn
      @comonbabylightmyfireburn 8 місяців тому

      It may be to some extent, but what is most important is to burn very well seasoned wood. 20% moisture content or less is the way to go.

    • @siamakga
      @siamakga 8 місяців тому

      @@comonbabylightmyfireburn Thanks, that debunks the theory that you shouldn't buy an oversized stove because burning half load clouds the glass.

    • @comonbabylightmyfireburn
      @comonbabylightmyfireburn 8 місяців тому

      well it's best not got too oversized, don't really want to be doing 1/2 loads all the time as it won't be as effective as a properly sized stove running on full/ or mostly full loads@@siamakga

    After all these years i am considering a new wood stove and it has come down to three candidates. Blaze king, wood stock soapstone hybrid,or a jotul f series with a catalyst. I need a stove that can hold a healthy amount of wood at least twenty four inches.

    Love your videos and your enthousiasm for making a fire. North-south, is that for less risk of damaging the glass ? We have a Jotul 121 and it burns great, but I wish to see the fire and think about buying a f400 . How big is the risk of breaking the glass or scratching the glass ? Did you ever have problems with the glass ? Is it a good idea to buy already a spare glass when buying the stove ?

    • @wobdeehomestead
      @wobdeehomestead 2 місяці тому

      A little trick for longer burns. Try blocking the two unrestricted air holes that shoot out from your firebox dog house. Also when you load for an overnight burn rake all the coals forward, place a large split in the back and pack the rest in tightly. This should give you a somewhat front to back burn and leave some coals in the back of the stove. You may be able to squeeze out 8 hours .

    How to compare fuel consumption and power at JOTL F118 versus F 400

    • @comonbabylightmyfireburn
      @comonbabylightmyfireburn 2 роки тому

      This is a Jotul 118 Clone so similar but not exactly the same as an original Jotul. Also it is not an EPA stove and has no secondary burn tubes or baffles. I’ve only used it occasionally and with wood that is not near In quality to the hardwoods like oak I burn in the F 400. So I don’t really have a good comparison for you. They burn quite differently. The F 400 burns more cleanly. The 118 probably can do a longer burn as it burns front to back like a cigar. Sorry I’m not more helpful.
