  • This is the final video of this 3-video series where I have been drilling holes into my stock muffler. In this video, I bore the 6 holes to 3/8".

Just did this mod today on my 2021 MT-07 and it definitely makes it sound better IMO. I drilled six 3/8 inch holes in the exhaust chamber (3 on top and 3 on bottom like you did). Took it for a ride on highways and local streets in New York City for about 30 minutes and didn't notice any changes in performance. At lower RPMs especially in 1st and 2nd gears it sounds much louder than at highways speeds in the higher gears and RPMs. That is actually good for my needs because when I'm riding down local streets I want people to hear me so they are less likely to just step out blindly from between parked cars into my path. Also when filtering between cars in heavy traffic at slow speeds hopefully some drivers will hear me as I'm about to pass by them. Nothing is guaranteed of course so it is always best to assume no driver sees or hears you. One day I may get a full Akra system with a tune, but for now I just want a little more sound without spending any dinero.

I used a 1" hole saw to cut a hole diagonal down left of the exhaust pipe. It falls inside the stock cover. Of course it doesn't have the deep throb of a nice pipe but it should maintain its optimum performance as JWE has reported here with the 6 - 3/8" holes. It has kind of a Harley sound but not very loud, which is what I wanted. The stock ride was nice but it's dangerously quiet and doesn't allow one to really bond with the revs. Far more exhaust comes out of the new hole compared to the old pipe end. There's a video with a cut away and diagram of the exhaust pathway you could check out before drilling as I did. I just got the bike second hand and the guy already had a 2 Brothers full system on it. I had him put the stock back on. I might sell it but sorry guys, I'm in Thailand!

Very cool! I'm inclined to do this to mine. Only thing holding me back is worry that it will damage the bike...What are your thoughts regarding whether or not this mod (drilling 6 3/8 inch holes) will be a positive, negative or neutral to the bikes operational performance. Thanks in advance!!!

I did this to mine last week I ended up cutting the holes together so now it's just like a giant hole behind there pretty much now. Gets rid of that poppy exhaust leakish sound at idle if that makes sense? I'm saving up for a full graves exhaust for mine now though. Nice to have some more noise til I can get it

NICE! I haven't seen anybody do one big hole. I just ordered the Akra Ti and will be shipping out the ECU for a flash to 2WDW. But the drilled holes have been good and I actually like the sound when going at speed and the decel note. But I'm sure the Akra just can't be beat. Can't wait. Have fun with your Graves! Should be a big improvement.

Hi I've done the drill mod on a previous bike (Vulcan S), but am having some difficulty on the FZ 07 due to the shape of the pipe. Once you drill into the exhaust chamber (the first layer), how did you manage to drill into the actual pipe another half inch inside? The pipe is curved so I can't seem to find a way to drill into it effectively as the curved pipe resulted in a broken drill bit. Any advice is appreciated!

Hey ... The mod was done on my FZ07 2016 (w/ 1.280mph) and OWW MY GOSH !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds so great :)
What about the consumption, has it changed anything? Thank you! ;)

Glad you like it! I thought it was an audible upgrade over stock. When I had the stock exhaust, I was getting 50-55 mpg and the motor ran around 178 on average. After drilling the holes and installing the K&N air filter, the bike actually ran cooler around 172 on average and the fuel economy increased to 58-62 mpg. Now I have installed the Akrapovic Titanium full system with a 2 Wheel Dyno Works ECU flash.... the bike still runs from 172-180F, but my fuel economy dropped to 42-50mpg. But I have to admit, the new performance and sound of the Akra Ti instigates throttling and fun!

How high is the 6 holes in the base? with these holes has it become more economical? Did you have any problems later?

i know this is an old video but i was looking to do this on my fz-07 stock muffler too. if you end up wanting it quieter after drilling all the holes, would you be able to plug those holes with some screws or bolts to make it quieter? if so, would the cover fit still?

I haven’t tried doing that yet, however you could find many stock mufflers out there that people are willing to give away. I eventually took mine to the dump after upgrading to the Akra Ti full exhaust :)

Same thing over in Australia and New Zealand. If I were to move out of the US, I'd probably just pay to ship my bike instead of buying a new one.
