FZ-07 Stock Exhaust Mod, Phase 1 - 3/16" Holes Drilled

  • Drilling holes has never been so nerve-racking. But this modification that anybody can do to their stock muffler is simple and effective for a motorcycle, especially at higher elevations. I will be adding an EJK fuel controller to smooth out the motor, revs, powerband, decel, throttling, etc. I will ride with these six 3/16" holes for a week or two and see how I like it and how the bike performs. I may widen those holes slightly to a 5/16 or even 3/8th of an inch for deeper tone and more air flow at this 6,200' elevation.

    Just bought a 2017 FZ07 with no stock exhaust cover, and drilled holes in the exhaust. He made the holes a bit larger and a bit closer to that pipe. I haven't heard a stock exhaust on an FZ07 in person, but this bike purrs! If you're looking to get a better sound, but are a little worried about the loudness of aftermarket exhaust, this may be a mod to try first.

    Very good video. I appreciate how you stated the camera you used, and the step by step prosses - very thorough and helpful. Haha good work on the exhaust Il be using this vid again!

      If I was you, I would go straight to the 5/16 " holes. Ride for a week. Then go up to the 3/8" if you feel. After I've gone to the 3/8", I've enjoyed it the most.

    Thanks for recording it. I was wanting to hear it. Not my taste. I prefer the stock sound. But you removed this idea from my plate. I appreciate it.

      Hey no problem. Remember, I'm not finished. I'll be doing another video with medium holes and then again with bigger holes. The holes simply make the stock sound have a little higher volume. However there is no wrong doing and go with what YOU enjoy! Keep an eye out for the next video.

      +ryde4ever Today after work I bored out the 3/16" holes to 1/4" and the difference is awesome. It's not too loud to piss off the neighbors, but it's holds the audio tune while riding around at all RPM's, whereas with only the 3/16" holes sound like stock when the motor revs higher than 3k or so. I like this MUCH better and will be hesitant to bored farther because it sounds THAT good. I'll combine a few video clips tonight and tomorrow after recording with the shroud installed and upload to my channel. Stay tuned if you're interested!

    look forward to hearing the larger ones. As I rewatched this, I got to wondering what that would look like if you left the end pipe exposed and then painted the ugly part with high heat black. Then leave the shroud off.

      +ryde4ever When you have music or a Podcast playing from your phone, have you ever tried putting it into a cup or bowl to amplify it? The shroud that covers the exhaust does the same thing. I like it! If I were to leave it off, I would cut off the square mounting brackets for the shroud so it looks smooth. I probably won't do that, though. I like the look of the shroud. However, I did end up painting my shroud a high-heat "aluminum" color and it looks WAY better than that stock tan.

    What does elevation have to do in regards to airflow in the exhaust ? Would this be more effective at lower elevations ? Or are you simply saying it is easier to get airflow at the higher elevations.. (Is the increased airflow adding to the sound / so technically bikes would be quieter at higher elevations?)

    • @jacksonwholeexperience409
      @jacksonwholeexperience409  8 років тому +1

      Google and read up on air density at different elevations. The lower the elevation, the more air pressure you have. At higher elevation, the less air pressure you have in the atmosphere. Therefore, any naturally aspirated engine will have more power at lower elevations then higher elevations. As far as engine sound, I imagine that having more air flow through the motor will be louder. I can a test to the fact that after you add a high flow air filter and exhaust system that your motor will have a louder howling sound to it as it sucks in a bunch of air. I actually preferred that sound over the exhaust note.

    Hey man, good job. I wanna know about water.. When you wash it or when it's a rainy day, don't you have problem? Water does not accumulated there?? Doesn't enter through the holes??? What did you do???? Thanks.

    • @jacksonwholeexperience409
      @jacksonwholeexperience409  8 років тому

      Good question. I put the shroud (cover) back on after drilling holes which will help keep water out. But with your motor running you shouldn't need to worry about water getting in very much because of the pressure of the air pushing out. Somebody mentioned being concerned about rust, but I'm not too concerned about that because after I park the bike the heat of the muffler will dry everything off pretty well to prevent rust from forming. And even if rust does start, The stock muffler can always get changed out with a new aftermarket. So if you do this, I wouldn't be too worried about water getting in there. Your tailpipe is a lot larger and exposed to the elements then the six small holes are drilled and people don't seem to be worried about that catching water do they?

    • @opaulinho5420
      @opaulinho5420 8 років тому +1

      Hi, I'm here again. So, did you notice something wrong after some days or not? Did you feel your bike more powerful? Some vibration or strange sounds?? Sorry for ask but I intend to do it in my bike. Where does this idea? who taught you do it?

    • @jacksonwholeexperience409
      @jacksonwholeexperience409  8 років тому +1

      +de TUDO Please ask away - we're here to learn from each other! I've since then expanded the holes to 1/4" from the 3/16" in this video. I have publish a new video with the new holes in that you can watch here (ua-cam.com/video/6wZG-xtf8G0/v-deo.html). In it, I go over the sounds with recordings and cruise around town a bit. I am very happy with the six 1/4" holes. I am having a tough time deciding to make them even bigger at this point. But if I do, I'll go with a next size up on 3 of them and leave the other 3 at 1/4" just to test for a little while.
      With the mod, I haven't had any strange sounds beside the change in the exhaust note. The bike runs at a comfortable 172 degrees when riding in normal conditions (3-6 RPM, 6200 feet elevation, 50 degree F air temp, 87 ethanol-free gas, K&N air filter) and the other day I took a ride over a mountain pass that goes higher than 9k feet and back down and then home again. That total distance was 72 miles. The bike had registered 70+mpg!! Remember, I have a windscreen and hand guards, too. So the aero-dynamics may help a bit with that. So far so good. Let me know when you drill holes and how you like it. Good luck! - Scott

    Hi I'm super late to this show but just bought an FZ-07. Just curious, how far apart did you space the holes? And overall were you content with the 6 holes @ 3/8"? Thank you!

      Anna Martin Hey! I don’t know the exact spacing but I don’t think that matters as long as you have them all inside the third chamber area of the muffler. Since this video post, I put on an Akra Ti and would be willing to sell you mine in this video that I already drilled so you have options. $100 + shipping

      Anna Martin Ya it’s the full exhaust. Easy to change and can be done without a stand. Especially since the bike leans away from the exhaust side, making it easier to get to when it’s on the kickstand.

I am doing this because I don't want to be limited to ONLY uploading motorcycle videos. I have more videos of other fun adventures like ice fishing, boating, elk and deer hunting, hiking and other ways of exploring around here in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I hope you enjoy!

I would go through all of the typical and easy troubleshooting - make sure battery is connected and charged, key turned on, fuel, etc. Does it turn on and turn over when trying to start?

      Thanks for the concern. I knew I was going to be getting an aftermarket exhaust at a later date and plan to keep the bike for a long time. If it does void the warranty, there are plenty of stock exhausts out there you can purchase for very cheap or some may even send you their's for free, you may just have to pay for shipping. But as of last Spring, I have installed the Akropovic Titanium full system and it's amazing. Drilling holes works as a temporary solution, but I suggest saving for a "real" setup, get the ECU flashed, etc.
