Mastodon - Stairway to Heaven [Official Audio]

- In early September 2018, we lost one of our closest friends and our biggest fan, our manager Nick John. He was essentially the band’s Dad. From our highest highs to our lowest lows he was always there. Every single move we made went through him first as our trust in him was marrow deep. His favorite band besides us and Gojira, was Led Zeppelin. We were asked to perform “Stairway to Heaven” at his funeral. Afterward, finding out that someone had recorded it, we figured we should record a studio version and release it on Record Store Day as a tribute to Nick with all the proceeds to be donated to pancreatic cancer research. We would not be the band we are today without the help of Nick John. We miss him dearly and think of him always. We love you buddy.

Brann Dailor has got to be one of rock's greatest singing drummers.
I disagree. He's the greatest rock singing drummer
And the drummer to atreyu too.
TheKdbooker lol nah
@@zachiswayposi1 I disagree, he's the greatest singing drummer 😉
The guy from kiss is awesome too
Brann, if you're reading this, I just want to say, I admire you and respect your work as Mastodon's drummer. But you've went above and beyond with such a mystical, yet majestic vocal performance.
Forever your fan.
(No Homo)
Stan aint dead y'all!
As a drummer and all round musician, I agree.
Added this to my Spotify playlist.. Great piece of work.. 💯
@sREUDIAN fLIP Brann's voice is the only in Mastodon that you could use for a cover like this xd. And he has been getting more vocal prescence- Emperor of Sand and Cold Dark Place have really great vocal lines from Brann.
"There's a feeling I get when I look to the West
and my spirit is crying for leaving."
- Elrond, probably
@pippin most zep songs were inspired by Tolkien too so there's that
E: I shouldn't say most cuz that's pretty big
Battle for evermore I know is Tolkien esque
@pippin I still can't figure out where they got the name Misty Mountain Hop from, though.
@pippin Right. It was meant as a well meaning but smart ass remark. Apols.
@@davep8221 And the lyrics have nothing to do with mountains or mist, or anything related Tolkien.
@@davidgomez7882 Yes they do. The feeling I get when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving is absolutely a Tolkien reference. It refers to the parts of Lord of the Rings that talk about elves leaving Middle Earth and going westward to the undying lands. Robert Plant has stated how much Tolkien inspired his lyrics during his tenure with Zep.
What is the world coming to when we can’t even listen to a song longer than 5 minutes without being interrupted by an ad halfway through?
Fr ads dont make me buy, they make me hate. This is a masterpiece that deserves no inturruption
Ads should be automatically blocked on music videos. I wanna listen to this song without having to hear about the new Toyota every few minutes
Well, they had to somehow make money since people are listening to their song through UA-cam and not buying their CDs or subscribing to Spotify.
@@calamitywall I myself own four of their albums on CD but I guess that is a fair point.
Yeah, at least put it in the beginning not in front of the solo… First time listening here and it was ruined by the stupid add. Thanks mastodon, you suck
Led Zepplin's version: Feels like you are ascending to heaven
Mastodon's version: Feels like you are ascending to the cosmos
Dude, this got 1 got me right through the feels.
Perfectly expressed!
Don't know which I'd be happiest about. ❤
I don't know if my english is correct, but I came here just to say that Mastodon saves my life every day. Thank you for being the soundtrack to my fight against depression and anxiety. God bless you! Greetings from Brazil!
Daniel Antoniasse Every word is correct. Stay strong
@@linusfotograf thanks brother!
Keep fighting brother! Much support!
Stay strong dude
Thanks for the support friends!
My god Brann Dailor is incredible
Criminally underrated drummer AND singer
@@ATthemusician And people have the audacity to like Slayer who literally have one song.
@@DavidOakesMusic I like their first album, and seasons :p there isn't much that comes close to Mastodon. Primus and gojira do to an extent, but still
@@DavidOakesMusic No need to put others down when praising those you like
@@DavidOakesMusic how dare you lol.
This is, legitimately, the only cover of Stairway I have ever liked.
It is very very good. It might even be better than the original in my eyes.
I'd say Heart's version at the Kennedy Center holds its own against any cover of this song. I love Mastodon and why they did this, it's an amazing cover. Heart's was awe inspiring though, and live, with Zepp in the crowd, and with barely enough time to rehearse. Which was a shitty one at that from interviews I've read. That is the pinnacle for Stairway covers for me.
@@Eggo5150 Heart's version is definitely the best one ever.
Yeah, Heart's cover had Robert Plant in tears. He said it was magnificent
ua-cam.com/video/yOADUlfh2qY/v-deo.html
I'm in tears listening to a song I've heard a million times.
It couldn't have been said better.
I had the same feeling man
Ditto
Same. Just because they did it so beautifully, and Brann... man. Robert Plant would be proud.
Damn. Hate when a single paragraph in the description about a guy I've never met brings a tear to my eye.
I like what he did with the solo. He kept the important parts, but put his own twist on it. Great cover.
That's what the best covers do. Who wants a clone of the original? If you do, put on the original.
That's a great way to put it. It's gotta be intimidating for anyone to try and cover Zep to begin with, and a guitar solo that's arguably ranked among most rock fans as the "best" solo ever. But you're exactly right, Brent (or Bill? I can't tell) really killed it here.
Homey Iommi The actual Stairway Solo isn’t very difficult to play, it just fits the song so incredibly well and comes in with the full band rocking.
It’s hard not to love it.
Great observation
Brent is an incredible guitarist. He killed this song and his solos in Mastodon are amazing. One of my favorite players by far.
One of my favorite songs performed by my favorite band.
Sorry for your loss guys
What do you mean sorry for your loss???
@@nibbnibb1899 it's a tribute to a manager/friend that recently passed away.
@@nibbnibb1899 read video descriptions. they help a lot.
@@MarkyPaligs They help a lot 🤓
Brann is incredible here. I’ve always rated his voice, but this is spectacular. At times I heard a touch of Mikael Åkerfeldt in Brann’s vocal. Brilliant. RIP Nick John.
They should do Windowpane cover :)
Jon Kwape 👍🏻👍🏻
I know I heard that too, as soon as the vox started. Mastodon made righteous cover!!!!
the touch of Akerfeldt is the subtle megaphone filter that Mikael also uses in quite a few Opeth songs, most famously in Drapery Falls
Damn, this is the first time in 30 years this song has given me goosebumps
Brann sounds AMAZING!
Rest In Peace, Nick John.
R.I.P Nick John.
Mastodon, we salute you.
Sounds like Nick John had good taste in music!
Of course he did, he managed Mastodon after all lol
@@nikolaiastrov1099 Go Blue
fuck yeah dude
He was a huge fan of Led Zeppelin. That’s why they chose this song as tribute to him.
Your taste in a College Football team is bad though, Go Bucks.
Jesus wept, THAT is how you do a cover of a classic. Brann's vocals hit a heartfelt new peak there.
I lost both my mother and grandmother to pancreatic cancer a few years ago, its a ruthless and silent killer.
And since I'm a carrier of the genes connected to this myself, I'm truly grateful for any efforts towards finding a cure.
Thank you.
R.I.P Nick.
I lost my dad to the same thing.its awful
Big pharma will NOT realease the cure we have
"Hey..no stairway man!..oh, except you guys of course"

There's a reason why Mastodon is my favorite band
😘💕
Is it cuz the fuckin rip?
Theyre fuckin awesome
This is the best cover in the last 20 years.
Or Tool’s No Quarter
Their cover of melvins the bit is my fav cover of all time.
"Hurt" cover came out in 2002. So... No
agree but check out "crazy" cover from mushroomhead. one f my all time favorite covers👌
This is a peaceful and melodic song so comparisons are hard to find my favorite cover as of late was superbeast redone by suicide silence with the now deceased Mitch lucker.
Sorry for your loss. Nick John was such a kind person, besause he manage your band and Gojira. You did beautiful performance. R.I.P. Nick John.
@Craig Adams Thx
@Craig Adams you're a twat
It takes balls to cover this masterpiece. Thanks for posting this video officially. Great and faithful cover!
My thoughts exactly...was kind of holding my breath, thinking " oh boy...this could be sacrilegious "...but I'll be damned.
Stairway To Heaven is one of a few songs that is so perfect that it cannot be covered or even attempted. I’m glad to say that Mastodon is the one exception to that rule.
You guys smashed it! I knew you would after that masterpiece cover of Orion. Been a fan for years and then I got the honor of getting to know Brent and Brann during a few of your shows in Oregon. Being a lifelong huge fan of Zeppelin as well, this song means all the more. You did Nick John right with this. What a wonderful way to immortalize his memory.
R.I.P Nick John Thank you for letting the guys be themselves and helping to bring about the songs that have reached so many ears and hearts.... Your influence will live on FOREVER.
Holy cow. I did not expect that vocal performance. I'm in absolute awe.
Like... all hail Brann, first of his name, king of the toms and the high hat, ruler of the seven fills? Are we there yet? Is that a spoiler? 🤷🏾♂️
Brann the Broken? More like...Brann the Breaker of Drumsticks
Wtf. You could've done so much better Matthew!
You forgot permanent occupant of Davey Jones Locker matey!
...and high priest of the ghost note
Brann the Breaker!!!
This version, and the story behind your recording of it, is just fucking awesome. You guys are beautiful!
I listen to this everyday while I ride my camel to work. Greetings from Saudi arabia. Love and peace. Stay humbled like the fruity palm tree amidst the sands of the desert.
thats my boy
Bullshit, you ain't no doctor
This is the version of Stairway I want to listen to. The solo, Brann's voice, that crunchy riff in the background during the solo so good.
There isn't quite a cover of this song that inspires me even half as much as this one.
The amount of balls it takes to take on this song.... Only you guys could do it. Top-Notch good job..... Back to my rudiments
Brann Dailor. Beautiful voice, well done
Much love for doing this in your brother's name. Blood does not always come from the genome, and this performance shows it.
Heartfelt.
Dad's are a good thing to have. 🤘
What a lovely tribute and a fantastic performance!
A beautiful rendering that honors the original masterpiece as well as your friend. Very classy of you to donate the proceeds as well. Thanks for sharing this with us!
great job on a classic and so sorry to hear of your loss.
I love Mastodon!
I love Led Zeppelin!
Come to Brazil again!!! 💓
How many times a year does Iron Maiden play there? If it wasn't for you guys they would have retired by now!
J Huff they are true fanatics buddy..whole South America can be regarded as the best fanbase for literally anything...
That's the reason of awesome mosh pits and heavy metal bands playing there regularly
The ad came on strategically before the solo and I will strategically never buy that product
This song sounds so great by you, Mastodon. I just recently found this song, done by you, and it sounds absolutely great!!! You are one of my favorite bands!!! Keep on rocking!!!!
I've been listening to this on another channel but it got taken down. So glad you guys posted it. Great job on the cover.
I haven’t listened to many Mastodon songs with Brann singing, but my god. This performance has made him one of my favorite singers ever. His voice is so fucking incredible.
Wow! Just wow! Couldn’t stop from playing it over and over. Nick is definitely on that stairway!
My god Brann, I'm crying dude that was awesome man!
I am discovering right now this cover and I have read the description and the story of the cover. Lots of love from Spain, the story behind and your sensibility gives me goosebumps.
Barelyheard this a couple days ago and it took me back to the mid 80s. The band I was in played this song similar to this. Absolutely beautiful version, Mastodon!!!!!
Lost my dad to pancreatic cancer in September 2016. Just makes this hit a little closer to home...Thanks for the beautiful cover, and the generous donations. Much love❤
Sorry for your loss bro,R.I.P. stay 💪!!
Lyrics
There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Oh oh oh oh and she's buying a stairway to heaven
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiving
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder
There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who standing looking
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder
And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying the stairway to heaven
at this time liryc was important
great poetry
Tyrone McCabe Can you please tell me what a bustle in your hedgerow means ? Bugging me for 40 years 😏
DougE Fresh something moving around loudly in your bushes.
@@dougefresh7765Bustle - move in an energetic and busy manner Hedgerow - a rough or mixed hedge of wild shrubs and occasional trees, typically bordering a road or field.
Thanks for the explanation , don’t know what it has to do with the song , but I won’t be alarmed now 😂
Not usually a fan of covering what I consider "sacred songs" but damn, they nailed this, with just a tiny touch of Mastodon to it..great f'ing job
The best cover of stairway imo. Listening to this more than the original nowadays... RIP Nick John...
Such an amazing gesture for someone you lost. Perfect song choice, tears incoming when the solo kicks in as his spirit floats off to heaven. Rest In peace.
This is amazing! One of the best covers ever, next to Wilson sisters' (Heart) rendition.
as covers go, this might be one of the best. it's absolutely immaculate
Over 30 years of listening rock, from GNR to Slayer and from King Diamond to COB; this covor, în my opinion, is better than the original song. Big like, Mastodon!
Beautiful and touching tribute. I could go for a whole album of Mastodon covering Zeppelin!
Majestic rendition of a timeless classic.
i'm in tears for you guys play this song..
and for the late Nick John, i might didnt know, never heard of you..
but Rest in Peace, man..
we are family since we are have same passion, with the spirit of Mastodon ..
very well rest Nick..
..and thank you for what you guys done Brann, Brent, Troy and Bill
Led Zeppelin is proud.
This song feels like it could help anyone who is a music lover, to get through their grief of having lost someone so close to them. To unleash and let go of whatever sadness they may be holding, and become better again.
damn, this is an incredible cover. only a band like mastodon can do it justice and put their own take into the song.
to think a metal band can put such a beautiful spin to an already beautiful song
I just want to say how sorry I am at hearing of Mr. John's passing. Pancreatic cancer has been a scourge in my life. It took my Mother-in-Law, robbing my daughter her grandma. It took an uncle. It's taken a close co-worker/dear friend. My heart is with you guys. If it wasn't for Mr. John, your music wouldn't be in my life. I'm grateful to you and him for that gift. May he rest in peace, may his family find comfort and healing, and may you guys forever love your friend always. Be at peace, be well.
Mastodon took the most cliched* guitar song and made me feel it again. That is talent.
* Wayne's World movie had a "No Stairway to Heaven" sign in the guitar store, It has been a long running joke among guitarists that playing Stairway or Smoke on the Water in a guitar shop makes you newbie or douche bag. Mastodon said fuck that, respect.
My condolences. I know that feeling of loss. Fitting tribute. Well done. To infinity, and beyond!
Can’t say this is the best cover because Zappa’s version will always have a special place in my heart, besides that, a great, great version! 👏👏👏👏
Not to take anything away from anyone, but the more I listen to covers of this song the more I appreciate the raw power of Bonzo. That is something I don't find in many covers - a deeper appreciation of the original. This is a testament to the top-tier talent at work here.
Such an incredible job on this cover! I bet he's honored that this was done in remembrance of him. Once again, Mastodon is doing their part to assure us there is hope for rock/metal...
90% of today’s so called music is absolute TRASH. Bring back the 70s PLEASE
I agree 💯 percent!
First and foremost, so sorry for your loss and thank you for fundraising for such an important cause. Secondly, Brann deserves all the praise he's getting for his singing. Thirdly, Brent, the solos, my god. What an amazing blend of your own style with some of the notes and progressions of Page's original solo. Finally, the whole composition from start to finish was nothing short of brilliant. The greatest cover of the greatest rock song of all time. Thank you!
Absolutely fucking marvelous. It takes a huge amount of balls for anyone to even consider covering Stairway and you just nailed it, felt the emotion on every level. Great job guys and so terribly sorry for your loss.
Literally thousands of garage bands have covered this song since it debuted. But theres a difference between covering it when no ones looking versus putting it on a publicly released album an paying the royalties due, that takes balls.
I felt like crap. Then I came here and listened to this. I no longer feel like crap.
Guys-
Masterful. Nick would have been proud and honored. And I’m pretty sure the best “cover” of it Ive ever heard. Cancer sucks.

Thank You Very Much-- Great Job
RIP Nick.
What an amazing version of the legendary song. Total justice here. I love it. A fitting tribute to your friend.
Damn. I'm sorry to hear about your loss fellas. To Brann and everyone else in Mastodon, this has to be one of the best covers of a songs that I have ever heard. I have replayed this over, and over again and still have goosebumps. You guys have given this beautiful historic song justice for sure. True musicians. You and Led Zeppelin are some of the GREATEST bands to have ever existed. Brann's vocals in this song are impeccable, and can only be outdone by Robert Plant himself. LZ would be proud. Keep up the amazing music that will keep rock alive, just like this song.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I heard the tail end of this on 99.7 the Blitz last night. I could not figure out who was doing this remake from the sound. I was getting goose bumps and saying I have GOT to find who this is. The DJ then said it was by Mastodon which made me even more thrilled. Just not 20 minutes ago I had a buddy play this in our shop - this would be the first time listening to it in full. I got goose bumps again. Then I came into my office and read the background.
Truly grateful to be able to enjoy this and yet and sadden by the loss...
damn brann's vocals really remind me of Mikael Åkerfeldt in this
Akerfeld is more nasal... but nevertheless my favourite live prog rock singer.. unique voice.. mastodon with akerfeld as frontman (and also as writer but don't like the last 2 albums).. would be a perfect match
BTW.. give Anciients a listen. The baby of Mastodin and Opeth.. and if you say No then listen 3 times to the full voice of the void album
Killing the reply button.... what have you done!!! Become addicted to the guitar solos and last minute screams.... may be I can deal the heaven with this mastodon version... though Led Zeppelin is god to me. Then what mastodon is.... demi-god??? It makes me wonder
My favourite song by one of my favourite bands. Eternal.
Rest in peace Nick.
I will never not love MASTODON, that being said, you guys are right up there with bands like Metallica, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Beatles. So much talent, and you guys love your fans and we love you back. Stay classy as always. I've been in the Colony of Birchmen since birth! hahah
Let's get some fs in chat for the manager that made it possible for us to enjoy Mastodon as we do today
Being so enchanted with this version and listening to it over and over again helped me discover a new fondness for Led Zeppelin and the original
This sounds amazing. I'm sorry about your friend.
What an awesome tribute!! Sorry for your big loss guys 😔
I lost my Dad to bile duct cancer. Thanks to a liver transplant by the Mayo clinic in Jacksonville Florida and most importantly the donor (thank you), he was able to enjoy a few more until the rust came back ....
Dig this song always despite the hackneyed reputation. This sounds damn good.
I absolutely love this version. No thanks UA-cam for putting an ad right in the middle of it. :-(
It's the best Stairway to Heaven cover/performance(Less, of course, those of LZ)ever made since it was conceived. As if the heaven had collided with the earth. And that was the sound that made.
You ever heard Heart's version with LZ watching and Plant even crying at the end?
I think this song is sort of like most classic zeppelin and bands like them in the way that it can be really difficult to adapt their music to your own style if your recording a cover, they are just so unique and anytime you hear them you know it's them even when it's not. This on the other hand.. holy hell y'all made it yours like I'm beyond impressed and knowing the story why makes this an even greater feat as you pulled this off for a loved one and nobody else, which is beyond sweet. And goddamn those vocals really brings the piece to that unique place only y'all can bring it to. Sounds like it's your own not like your trying to capture plants vocals but keep the presence of your own and damn does it work.
Only other band I, know of, to pull off a proper Zeplin cover is Tool.
I'm not usually a fan of perfect re-creations of songs, but this is definitely an exception to the rule.
There is so much care taken to make the mood the same as the original so that it honours the man they cover it for.
Nice one fellas. RIP Nick John.
This is great.I met Brann at a gig at the NorVa in Norfolk ( Slayer show)- but I didn't know who he was - so it was just a fun conversation with some cool dude at the merch booth. Respect all around for these guys
Brann Dailor. You will always be my favorite artist and Mastodon will forever be my favorite band. Thank you for doing what you do.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Such a beautiful version...
What a beautiful tribute. R.I.P Nick John
The most important thing in this sad time is to remember all of the good times you had with the person you lost. Don't feel empty, that area in your heart is carved out by the impression they made on you. I lost my grandpa a few years back, and when I was breaking down in tears, I remembered something from when I was little. I was a bit of a crybaby back then. He told me to stop crying. I haven't shed half as many tears as I did when I was young. I wiped my tears and picked myself up. He wasn't the type of man who would want me to be crying. He was a man who could befriend anyone and everyone, pull everybody together and make them smile. That is the type of man I resolved myself to be since that day. Hopefully, I can inspire more people to be like him.
Killed it, boys. RIP Nick. Thank you for this. It's amazing.
Well goddamn! This was such an awesome cover of Stairway to Heaven! Mastodon is so awesome I'm glad that I played rock band 2 long time ago and got introduced to Mastodon with their song Colony of Birchmen i probably never would've heard of this band if it weren't for that game.
May peace be the journey of my cancer brother. Long will be his legacy of music and love. \m/
I wrote critique explaining why a band would do cover note for note like the original. I thought Mastodon were showing their artistic respect and reverence for Led Zeppelin specifically. Then I read the video description. (We all should do this much more when viewing a music video!) They did it note for note like Zeppelin because it was out of reverence to their friend who passed away who was a big Zeppelin fan. Very respectful gesture on their part. Sorry for your loss of your friend, Mastodon.
Awesome cover! Sorry for your loss.
What a soulful tribute, really amazed
