there were plenty of car enthusiasts and racing was pretty popular in the warsaw pact. the old air cooled skodas actually sold fairly well in western europe, where they were considered a poor man's porsche. rally racing was popular, with both lada and skoda competing in international competition, and there were even internal open wheel and drag racing events. the soviets pushed engineering VERY hard and consequentially auto racing was funded by the state. the soviets built a shitload of cars, too, just not as many as the US did. their public transportation was legitimately excellent and so cars were not necessary for the average worker, but commercial vehicles were easily available to anyone who needed one. soviet heavy trucks are fantastically rugged and capable of getting around in the very worst conditions without trouble. they've won dakar rally many, many times now.

its myth, they started to produce ladas in 60s, most families had 1 car in 70s in ussr. My grandfather bought 4 in his lifetime, waited just around 2 years at first, then sold and bought other immediately. This myth comes from misunderstanding , people didndt really needed cars back then when public transport was free or cost few cents, trains and planes were also cheap and no need to travel much far .

@@rayh6118 after looking at how America has been destroyed by cars, they were right. There's a lot of sacrifices made in the name of cars in the US. Also suburban sprawl was entirely dependent upon the automobile.

It’s pretty unlikely that this song is criticising or praising cars. The Soviet Union never really had issues with car-centrism since public transit was actually pretty good and cars were to expensive for most people to afford. Most of the song’s lyrics can be interpreted both ways like “two steps makes us suffer but 100km in a car is nothing” could mean that motorised transport is so convenient that walking is harder than driving, or it could be implied that the access to cars is making people lazy even though they could walk to their destination if they wanted to.
