Sword Expert Reacts to Realistic Sword Fighting Game | Hellish Quart
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 вер 2024
- We got Matt Easton, a Historical European Martial Arts expert and owner of the fencing club Schola Gladiatoria, to react to Hellish Quart. Telling us his sword-fighting expert opinion on how realistic the game really is.
From sabres to longswords and rapiers, this HEMA inspired 17th-century duelling game is all about precise hits, quick movements and wits. With all this in mind our sword fighting expert reacts to how realistic Hellish Quart is.
Thanks to Matt for lending his expertise and if you want to see more, here is a link to his channel: / scholagladiatoria
Thank you to Matt Easton for his expert opinions! You can find out more about Matt's work here - ua-cam.com/users/scholagladiatoria
What other games would you like to see an expert react to?
Call of Duty!!
Just bring back Matt Easton more often
More Matt Easton please
Kingdom Come Deliverance
Seeing this video in my feed has certainly made my evening! Happy to see realism becoming more mainstream, and always happy to listen to Matt asides...
It was great fun doing this! Looking forward to getting into the game myself.
Really looking forward to seeing you play it on your channel 😁
You'd have to be the British saber guy right?
@@Kondo87 True! Or playing against Skal or Metatron :D
Cool to see you here! Cheers.
@scholagladiatoria Matt, you're an international star now. I guess it's time to scale back on thrust and shaft jokes. 😭😂
Can you imagine sitting in the queue in the afterlife, right next to the guy who you were dueling, arguing about who should have won?
Technically the term winning is killing the opponent first so who reached the afterlife first is the lose one
Its a win win situation, you both get to continue the fight in Valhalla
@@retineyzer7906 if that's happened then where is the win lose situation?
…both still pumping their fists of course.
@@retineyzer7906 More like in chains in Gehena for you.
When Matt Easton comes to talk about swordplay in your game you sit down and listen.
Because if there's one thing he always provides is CONTEXT.
And innuendo, usually...
@@BeOtterMyFriend Quite the girthy pole. Thrust, with a firm grip on the shaft. Don't forget to sheath your sword before going out.
Don't forget penetration
@@olenickel6013 Quite a deep penetration actually. The pole goes straight in.
Context is his second favorite C word.
About darn time one of these "expert react" invites an ACTUAL expert to give opinions. Matt Easton qualifies as an expert in longsword/saber fencing and historical weapon dealing (actual antiques) as much as a person can possible can. Great choice!
Matt should be invited to advise developers on games, I'm looking at you Total War...
Skallagrim did multiple videos on this game. it's not a cart, it's a quarter. And that guy wasn't drunk, he was affected by the headwound.
@@johndododoe1411 Quart is pronounced like "cart", as it's French, meaning the fourth guard in fencing.
An expert? How many people did he kill with a sword? Zero.
@ really? tell me thats a troll
Finally a proper "sword expert" not just some Hollywood sword choreographer. This is the guy you get for these videos. Nothing against choreographers but there is a time and place.
Coudn't agree more.
Yeah get him and Skal, the real experts!!
Aye
No one wants a power ranger reacting to swords
@@baldski5049 EXACTLY
I could rewatch this video 20 times in a row and still find it massively entertaining. Matt is the man. ps: Love the game
Hi metatron, how are you? Seem like the whole sword community are here hahahah Matt is the guy and this game is amazing, don't you think?
Yo can’t wait to watch more and learn more from experts swordsman like you man I love your videos
is it hellish quarts or corts?
@@lucasart328 quart. It's a reference to an attack. You can find it mentioned in a german treaty under the name of "polnische quart".
And Metatron!
this game is a great example of, “games are for everyone” because it focuses on a mechanic that many other people wouldn’t find fun but to others its almost like reliving their dreams in sword dueling. Its game changing! no pun intended :)
It looks like crap tbh.
@@rickybobbyroode9814 not that bad in my opinion but what can you really expect when it is a one of a kind type of game?
@@rickybobbyroode9814 Yes, how so?
What game even is it?
I'd say it's more of a not every game is for everyone
I hope this game creates a whole new genre of fighting games.
Would be incredible but dont keep your Hopes up, it's too niche and there some games like this out there already, like Bushido Blade.
I must say that this one is very well polished for what it is.
@@pedinhuh16
If you’ve actually played it, it actually isn’t polished. I’ve been playing fighters for twenty years and tbh it has its issues. It def needs some more improvement.
@@ashlynnp.9609
Did you play the demo or the early acces version?
@@ashlynnp.9609 thats why its tagged early access

...okay. I still stand by what I said.
OKAY, WHO CHANTED CONTEXT 3 TIME TO SUMMON HIM?!
lol
I think the chant goes "context, context, penetration"
I hear if you do that in front of a mirror, Matt Easton appears and stabs you.
politely
No, guys! Guys! The Chant is: "Butt, Penetration, Context!"
It feels so wrong to see Matt Easton on camera leading with anything other than "I'm Matt Easton, Scholagladiatoria". For a moment I wondered if he was okay.
And he didnt say context ONCE
@@markuskristensen2433 they probably had to cut it otherwise the video would have been too long
Kinda weird to see matt without sauing "hey folks, Matt Easton here from scholagladiatoria"
"Hey folks, Matt Easton here, (2x speed) scholagladiatoria."
I didn't realise it was an ign video 🤣🤣🤣
Holy crab, not only did you get Matt Easton you also got him in the right context
Captain Context arrives precisely when he means to!
Without context!!!!
Needs more thrusting and penetration
Whoever thought of inviting Matt Easton for this deserves a raise
Nice to see Matt penetrating into popular culture here
I'm sure he'd appreciate the double entendre.
I’m going to need context.
We love our captain penetrating into pop culture!
Honestly nice to see popular culture recognising it
I see what you did there
3:20
Oh, that flinch is actually a deliberate design. Apparently, players can feign or "cancel" their attacks by pressing one of the attack buttons and then moving back. Since the guards are automatic, players can trick the opposing character to guard in an opposite direction for an opening. So like in other fighting games, there are also mind games in this one.
4:50
Oh boy, those janky movements are actually bugs, and the devs are working on it. Unlike in a lot fighting games, the swords and characters are actual ragdoll physics objects in the game world, which are affected by a lot of things like gravity and intertia, so the animations get thrown off alot.
There should be an unlock character...Matt Easton with a Spadroon!!!
Hahahaa!
Or...Unlockable Cat Easton as Puss-N-Boots..LOL🐈🤺
Honestly he should fight saber.
@@derstoffausdemderjoghurtis That would be more accurate, yes, but the meme gods demand he uses a spadroon and make his victory speech be something like "Your style lacks context"
@@crowhaveninc.2103 Does any other character have a victory speech?
I was a bit worried they’d bring out an Olympic or stage fencer for this video (nothing against those guys though) so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Matt goddamn Easton speaking. Just the right person to do this game justice. Nice job, IGN
I do believe that the dev did motion cap of HEMA fighters.
The game is tons of fun!
The devs themselves are HEMA practicioners if I'm not mistaken.
They did. Apparently over a thousand motion captured animations were used.
Matt Easton? Now that's a sword expert!
Finally, right?!
About time.
Skallgrim as well
Sword of. 😏
@@magnusthered4973 He's a practicioner, but not an expert.
"Is he drunk?"
Then 8 months later, Father Zera crash, bangs and wallops onto the scene.
Great to see you do this Matt. I'd not come aross the game before this, I'll have to have a look at it now. Did they use motion capture does anyone know?
They did. They even put on the same costumes and had those exact swords
Stances are mocapped, but involves a lot of physics animation as well.
Go to UA-cam channel; kubold, they are the developer
Maybe they could ask you to do some mocap a jousting expansion pack? :p
mocapped + physics simulated
I think this is the only "expert reacts" video I've seen where the expert actually had something to contribute.
Usually it's just a lot of "Whoa! That was crazy!"
You need to also check a video featuring Dr. Tobias Capwell about movie armor
They invited Ian McCollum (aka "the gun jesus") from Forgotten Firearms to do reaction as well. Someone in IGN really knows their stuff inviting the right people
@@oditeomnes *Forgotten Weapons. But yeah. Gamespot got Jonathan Ferguson from the Royal Armories museum to do a ton of react videos. You should check those out if you haven't already.
Matt Easton. Captain context. Master of innuendos
Come for Matt Easton. Stayed for matt easton.
And for more historical fencing games
Stayed to come in Matt Easton
Game: am I a joke to you?
Feels like you're actually getting stabbed 10/10
Glad to see Matt Easton talking about this game , because replicate really well in general terms the martial art (HEMA) .
never thought I'd see Matt on IGN
Time has come, Kotarō Kun.
Same
4:38 that is indeed how it goes. Lots of the historical records of double hits were young, hotheaded duelists who both went all offense no defense, running one another through.
I love all of the sword and medieval history community comments whenever someone like Matt or the other big ones (you know who 😉) show up in places like this.
Voldemor?
Matt Easton on IGN, a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
We did it, bois. The history nerds are mainstream now.
Seeing a big trend between the game journalist channels having experts react to games and no complaints, they're great to watch!
Ugh daddy😫
First Skall playing both the demo and the early access version, then Matt Easton giving his first impressions - Hellish Quart is blowing up!!
Can we complete the trilogy by getting Nick Thomas's opinion on the rapier system?
Yay! Been a fan of Matt for some time. Glad to see his knowledge spreading!
Whenever my patients refuse my treatment, I open my desk draw and reveal my Wakizashi. This lets them know that my treatment can go 1 of 2 ways and it’s their choice which treatment path is best for them. I always recommend the first choice.
Oh. Ok.
First do no harm ... and you did try that first.
What meme is this? Lol
That’s what a dr has to do to sell that snake oil.
Lol
But you will not deny me because I will reveal my big long thrusting Montante
IGN: we need some one to talk about swords
IGN: I got a guy
The best guy.
That makes no sense, but ok.
Me: start shitting
Glad someone finally hired an actual melee practicioner, not a "sword expert" which means a choreographer or something similar in lot of these videos.
Usually to be fight choreography certified you need to have studied HEMA, but it usually stops there. They don't practice anything outside of their craft. Which is why Easton is more qualified in this context.
Awesome to see Matt Easton! He really knows his stuff, and he has a decent appreciation for the limitations of game design too! You got a real gem this time, IGN!
Another successful sting for the British Underground Swordplay Division. Excellent way to get a seasoned blood tournament host to confess to years of staging illegal sword fighting tournaments to the death. "This death tournament is just like the bout we had last night!"
This game has incredible animations.its the first time I've ever seen a sword actually look sharp and deadly in a video game.
Hey folks, Matt Easton here schola gladiatoria
It looks like this game was custom made for the HEMA community. Nicely done.
Hell yes! Matt! Finally one of these "expert swordsman" video gets an actual expert.
Matt Easton?! You got the best one
Scholagladiatora my BOI Mat!
CONTEXT HAS ENTERED THE CHAT!!
Yes! You got Matt Easton, the perfect man for the job!
Looks like a GREAT game! Wow! Look at all the expertise commenters here, Matt Easton, Metatron, Knight of the High Court of Modern History TV. Just goes to show how involved they are in their fields. Will certainly be checking this game out.
Great choice with inviting Matt Easton. It's exciting to see someone who is a true expert on a channel like IGN.
glad to see one of my favorite sword experts in an ign video giving out context, context and more context. followed by penetration
IGN should've done these Experts reaction videos long ago, it's totally their ballpark.
Whats promising is how early on this game is. So if the devs keep working hard at it the game will really be extremely accurate, the game still probably has a bunch of bugs. But it will get better.
This game simply sells you on the realism. Even without the expert speaking, the flow of this game is surprisingly real!
Matt Easton is definitely an expert. Lots of these "experts" are not really experts. Glad to see the this
Depends on their credentials, and whether they have been at their particular field of research long or not. In the case of Skallagrim, Mr. Easton, Metatron, and Mr. Brooks of Shadiversity, they've been studying this sort of thing for many years.
@@thomasecker9405 absolutely correct. I was referring to stage actors or such for combat
@@jnlarge7244 I see...
This has to be the first "Expert Reacts" video that has an actual expert in it. Well done IGN
For more actual experts, Entertainment Insider has two movie react videos by Dave Rawlings. Go check em out. One of them only came out last week.
matt and ian - you guys took this seriously and got the best! well done!
This video had me laughing throughout. This is too funny
The "Sabre vs. Drunk" near the end of the video, he's not drunk, it's a bug in the ragdoll stabilization, if you want a drunk character, go for the 2nd character to have a long sword (forgot his name) and wearing a golden cross
The fact that the drunk saber guy is modeled after a polish dude, it actually makes sense that he's drunk
Finally IGN! Thank you for giving representation to this art form from an actual expert!!!:)
“When the rapier-ist puts their point in they have to be careful” ~Matt
It’s cool to see Matt Easton on IGN. Check out his channel. HEMA is badass.
Of course in reality you're way more defensive since you don't wanna die obviously! But this is so cool.
Yes Matt Easton! Excellent to see him in this context!
Looked at the thumbnail: Is that Matt? Hovered over it and gosh golly, it is him! Definitely the man you'd want to invite for this type of critic/commentary. 10/10 would watch another one.
There actually is a drunk character. Whoever was controlling that guy was probably drunk though.
Bloody hell, Matt is a proper expert on this subject. Great choice.
Bought the game a few days ago, very excited to dive in. Love Matt Easton, I was hoping he'd weigh in on this!
Great video Matt! @scholagladiatoria The beheading caught me offguard as well, as they weren't in the demo. I'm looking forward to the full release :)
They did actually. I played the demo hardcore. After grappling an opponent with the E key pressing one of three combinations of the 4 attack buttons would result in several executions. For example both upper strikes pressed after grappling will result in a beheading. However if the opponent grapples back he can grab your wrists and prevent this execution. Against the aggressive ai especially it was difficult to get the executions on them. On my brother? Much easier xD
Take note: when you get an actual "sword expert" who knows what he's talking about and can provide CONTEXT, you can tell because he's got racks of swords behind him. Almost like it's his livelihood or something.
Well, the first half was actually a smart comment then it went downhill
Matt Easton!!!!!
This is a great and positive review. Thank you very much for that xxx :) !
Fact:
The development was lead by Jakub Kisiel who is an former senior animator for Witcher 3 and inspired by the game Bushido Blade
I follow Schola Gladiatoria so this was simply fun to watch.
One of the horsemen of ancient warfare XD it's great to see so many things we've learned from Matt being applied in the recreation of a historical period. It's great to see an expert you know being consulted.
I like how this game has polish nobleman as playable character.
tbf, the patch notes and stuff do mention that the ai isn't where the dev(s) want it to be yet, and i think i also read that theyre updating how the characters play later on
4:16 “So the rapierist, one of the things they have to be wary of is, when they put their point in...” how could this be a video with Matt Easton without an innuendo!
Matt is so knowledgeable and well spoken. Great pick for collab!
People often say the katana is the best blade ever made but the truth is the Polish Saber (of course if the design is made by a proper craftsman with proper materials) really IS the ultimate design, especially the one used by winged hussars.
I didn't even notice this was a IGN Video til I looked down I just thought I was watching Matt's next video. It's cool to see him on another channel talking about video games.
I ABSOLUTELY NEED THIS GAME!!!

you know this reaction is better than those react videos, were the experts scream when there a scene in a game
Am I the only one who was expecting Matty usual intro?
Game needs a highlander with a claymore, a landsknecht with a flamberge and a pirate with a cutlass
Matt Easton, the real MVP.
Been watching Matt for years, fancy seeing him here!
And with regards to Mr. Easton's last comment, the instructor from a local arnis kali sect had this to say about sword fights/modern knife fights - "the loser dies on the scene, the winner dies at the hospital."
This game is so dope. The combat is super smooth
I was really surprised how well it plays. Tested the demo, bought the Early Access version immediately.
Okay this is freakin' awesome. Also, thank you Mr. Easton.
Holy moly, Matt Easton, the sword expert!
The corporate react machine has now found HEMA youtubers
I wonder in what context they had Matt Easton get such deep penetration into their game play mechanics. It is nice to see him get aroused by the concept of getting your point into two people at the same time.
Ayo😂
This was great, thanks. I hope you guys do more stuff with Matt Easton.
4:55 if you take a close look the sober guy goes in for a thrust movement for the head, but due to the guy being drunk and moving all over the place his head dodged the attack. Nice little detail.
this dudes giddy laughter when something brutal happens is hilarious.
Maybe they studied sword fighting.
I don’t think they’ve ever tried alcohol.

I kinda want this game, hope there's a katana in the future
But unlikely but if done properly would be fuckibg cool (record some old lineage kenjutsu person for the animations).
Would be very similar to the longsword mechanics wise so its definitely feasible.
