Okay, so you did the right thing and bought a used bike as your first motorcycling companion and rode it until it would go no more. There’s something special about your first bike, no question, but now you’re in the market for a fresh machine to call your own. What you’re learning is that between all of the different shapes and sizes of motorcycles available you’re not sure which one suits you best.
The best way to find out which kind of bike is for you is to try them. The second best way is to watch Ari and Zack in this episode of On Two Wheels, exploring five major categories of motorcycling and listing the bikes they recommend for each. And, because the idea is that this could be your first brand-new bike, all of these bikes have MSRPs under $10,000.

I love the transition from the fz07 to the 883, just awesome stuff
Guys you deserve more attention, your videos are top quality.
this show should be full half hour. it's better than anything on velocity.
+Zack Courts you missed supermotos in this comparison
Agreed
You recommend the FZ09 for tall riders who won't fit the FZ07, but it's worth noting that the FZ09 is a lot more powerful and not suitable for a new rider IMO.
I'm 6'3" and did look a bit large on the FZ07 so I bought the Tracer 700 instead. The Tracer wasn't out when they made this vid or it defo would've been on the list. All the fun of the FZ or MT as we call it, with subtle tweaks that make a great bike. I paid £6450 new for mine and love it.
Let me tell you boys...Versys is AMAZING! Gravel roads, easy off road and rip up the twisties like a champ...
I bought used and the Versys was the best adventure bike for what I was looking for but the older Versys were absolutely butt ugly. I ended up getting a V-strom, which I'm extremely happy with but I always wondered about the Versys engine. The 0-60 and quarter mile times are about the same but every review has it better for canyon carving.
I agree. I got my 2009 Versys 650 for super cheap on CL and it has been an amazing bike. I've got full luggage on it and I've done 7-hour days of interstate riding with no problem. That bike handles 85 mph with no sweat, but is small enough that you can handle it in the city and for daily commuting. Great bike, great value.
ok i have 9$
Don't let the dealerships know that!
You could buy a brand new 1,000 cc chinese bike
Don't buy anything chinese, you're going to spend a lot replacing parts, you might as well buy a used bike in great condition.
+EinkOLED I don't think we have Chinese made liter bike...
XSR 900
Just want to say your content is blowing me away, keep up the good work.
Nice to hear! We've got lots more in the pipeline, so stay tuned.
+Motorcyclist Magazine what do you guys think of the Indian scout 60
Question about the video. At 3:10 Zac starts listing bikes. What's the first one he says? Sounds like "star volt" which is not a motorcycle so far as I know :P
probably "star bolt" - by yamaha, I believe
Jon Findlay in north america yamaha releases their cruiser line by brand named star motorcycle.
Get a Dual Sport, 2 bikes in one! However, Japan needs to update their old outdated dual sports. DRZ still has an old carburetor. You'd think all bikes would have fuel injection in 2015.
+Survival Pax price not being an issue i probably would still have bought my WR250R over say a KTM dualsport. My Yamaha has almost 20K miles, a KTM would be needing an engine rebuild by now lol
***** some of the bikes still have a carb, yamaha tw200 and honda xr650l still have carb and really have not been updated in decades. lol
***** I've never really heard of anyone ever having an issue with fuel injection on a japanese motorcycle. For the most part japanese fuel injection has rock solid reliability, no worries.
***** That's KTM ...not japanese bikes.
+Survival Pax KTM reliability =/= Japanese reliability.
I had decided on the Versys 650 before finding this review on youtube. What drew my attention towards a dual sport? Location and experience. As a new, healthy rider expecting to use the bike regularly, I want something diverse. I plan on going everywhere using a motorcycle. As a professional driver (meaning it's my job to obey the rules of the road) getting injured or ticketed for speeding isn't in my best interest. Also, the bike is meant to liberate me from the task of operating a 70 foot long, 80k lb commercial tractor trailer. Most of the time, I am very limited to where my vehicle fits. Being able to go just about anywhere is what I have in mind. Weather I need to make a quick run to the bank or take the back roads to visit family for Thanksgiving, the Versys 650 looks ready take me there.
This is the first time I bumped into this channel and I'm very impressed by the quality. Keep it up guys! Subbed
Awesome video, I really enjoyed the transitions between the categories. Great recommendations too.
Zero regrets buying a brand new versys 650. Such an amazing bike!
it's perfect, it's all I want and so cute :P
@@marika7782 agreed I just bought a new versys 650
Great show! absolutely love the clip, it's dynamic and plenty of riding instead of just talking. Keep the good work! looking forward to seeing more shows like that
thoroughly enjoyed this one! Very nicely done with the transitions between bikes. And some very honest, down to earth tips for the new rider on a budget
Nice editing, liked the transitions between the bikes. Good vid!
this is hands down the best motorcycle video channel on youtube! cheers. did you see the 49 second video on that other channel "reviewing" the new scout?!.... so sad... wonderful transitions used here! kudos to the video team.
Very nice and helpful video, well done... Thanks guys!!!
Such a great video! You guys always bring quality on the “on two wheels” category! Some of my favorite motorcycle videos to watch on UA-cam.
One of my most favorite videos on motorcycles so far. Great topic to discuss, brilliant choreography, seamless presentation flow. Guys, you rock!
Great production quality. I loved the creative "live" jump cuts from bike to bike.
Excellent video, lot's of information, visually appealing and I really liked the the transitions from one bike to another by one bike riding past the next on the list. Well Done!
I LOVED my Versys! Great starter bike... And I took that thing everywhere, up and down road and off road... Not quite a KTM, but very versatile.
awesome video! I have watched the evolution of on two wheels , and the quality and content gets better with each one! nice touch with the segway from one bike to another. totally pro.
Great work on the style of this video. Absolutely impressed!
That was an impressive amount of content for a 9 minute video and y'all really hit some good points and attributes of each bike. I particularly liked how you mentioned how the FZ07 might be a difficult fit for taller riders. At 6'1", it feels cramped. The FZ09 feels considerably roomier despite the specs suggesting otherwise. I found that the shape of the gas tank makes the 07 feel odd and probably contributes to that.
Sometimes I curse my slightly taller than average height because not only it makes some really cool bikes uncomfortable to ride, but you are doomed to a lifetime of reaching items from the top shelf at the store for short people. I'm gonna start asking short people to grab me stuff from the bottom shelf.
Haha in my country you would be exactly average. The younger generation of boys (like the 18yr olds of today) are 2" taller than you :P I'm 6'1" like you and feel like I'm short
V-twin Kevin What country is that? Here in the US, the average male is 5'9". People certainly are getting taller, but 6'3" sounds way up there for an average.
+Aaron Fink that would be the country of the Dutch. Statistically, 6'1" is the average now but of course that's with all the short grandpa's included. The new generation is noticably much taller. Getting quite ridiculous actually
+Aaron Fink He is right, The Dutch are the tallest people in the world. So imagine how I feel being 6 feet tall and living there. Here you can read about it if you want
www.theguardian.com/world/2015/apr/08/scientists-try-to-answer-why-dutch-people-are-so-tall
Aaron Fink I'm 6' without shoes and I have to say that the FZ-07 is fine. FZ-09 is not beginner friendly at all and I wouldn't recommend it to a newbie just like these guys didn't. After having 2 years of riding under my belt and a week on a tuned up 2016 R1 though I definitely need to transition up.
You guys are awesome .. it’s great to see you’re working together has really turned into something terrific ! Major Kudos !
Your videos ROCK, guys. You answer the questions that many of of have.
awesome video guys
2:19 that transmission was just beautiful. Well done video 👍
Love this. I've had a DR200 when I was 15, then a DRZ400, and now an FZ-07, funny how this all comes together. Awesome bikes period.
I think you guys nailed it. Very good, practical advice. This should be a must view for those just starting or on a budget. Thanks a lot!
Great video since I'll hopefully be riding in the spring! Video so good I subscribed!!!!!!
Real funny with the bloopers added!
great video guys! the transitions were really cool!
another great video, nicely done. Keep 'em coming.
I am 15 and recently bought a crf250l for riding of road around our farm. Love it
I love this channel, you guys are doing an awesome job!
Great editing, love the video guy's!
Great video! It captures the choices you have to make as a rider.
amazing video, very informative. thanks guys
Awesome video guys, and that out take at the end :D.
you guys are doing a great job!
hoping for more videos like this one 😃
great video guys keep them coming
Just got my bike Learners today. So keen to get into the sport thank you guys. This is still very relevant vid now in 2019 for us here in South Africa. The Harley sells for 70 000 used in South Africa.
I bought a 2011 883 Iron brand new for my first bike and I still love it.
That was a great video guys! Definitely helpful as a new rider myself. I've been tossing between a dual sport and a small sport bike. But I seriously want adventure, so dual sport it is!
Your videos are awesome, cheers from Mexico!
Great succinct clip even almost three years later .. Thanks for all your videos ..
1:45 "Brakes and suspension are well above average" that's the first time I've ever heard that for an fz07.
Still one of the best videos on UA-cam. Still come back here every time I get bored of watching videos. Please do an updated version.
10 minute "episodes", well thought out and put together information, excellent scene transitions. These dudes are legit.. A++ Production 👌 👏👏👏
Your transition from Dual Sport to Sport Bike is so Top Gear! :)
I love it!
Do NOT buy a new Harley 883. There are SO many like-new, low-mileage used ones that folks are selling cheap to "upgrade" to a bigger Harley. Same for 1200 Sportsters.
Jeremy D YES!! My homie sold his 2013 Harley 883 with only 13 k miles for literally 4k since he upgraded to his 2016 dyna and didn’t care about his 883 anymore , you’re smart af lol
Its a personal refrence. Some people like things new, and some people would do anything to save money. For me, I'm door number 1
@@anashaziq5566 true nothing better than buying a brand new bike unless your broke
Mechanic here who strongly agrees. Even if you have new bike money the cash you save buying used will buy a lot of riding gear (so you don't become a meat crayon), upgrades and tools.
I've bought both and could buy a bagger for cash. The second a MSO from a "new" bike is turned in to DMV for a title, that vehicle is used. I buy by condition.
You guys are the best. This video is so well made.
fantastic content guys! love it
You guys help me soo much! Thanks.
GREAT VID BOYS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Best transitions I have seen on a review vid. Well done!
I just bought a brand new FZ 07, it's a head turner and an absolute blast to ride, couldn't be any happier!!
Pick 1 bike? No thanks, I'll pick multiple ones! lol :)
Grow up. Get a wife.
@@bruderrudiger9574 boring guy with wife who wears pants
boooo
I like how you humor the HD set. Among the bikes you've featured here, the Sportster is in a class by itself - the "ride 35mph in a straight line" class.
Exactly.
great video. I am lusting after that drz-400s, that along with my 1250 Bandit S my stable would be perfect.
Damn guys, I am absolutely blown away by this video. Your production quality is the best out there. Keep making videos like this.
Didn't want this video to end. So good.
Hubby and I are cruisers so we got 2016 HD Iron 883 w/ a sweet paint job. They gave us a chance since we needed two motorcycles and those other companies did not even want to work with us. We love our 883s!
Over the summer I was looking for my second bike (under 10k) I was torn between the FZ-07 and CBR 650F. Was able to pick up a left over brand new 2014 CBR 650F for $6400. Great all around bike! I'm so happy there are so many great options for under 10k. Riding a motorcycle is a beautiful thing! Ride safe!
You've got my subscription. Great Videos!!!
Great review of different types of bikes.
Watching this again 6 years later ha. These are all 1/2 price again. I’m lucky to be 5 minutes away from the twisty canyon roads in this video. Cooks Corner and a little run south on Live Oak Canyon twisties to Trabuco Creek into dirt roads and trails. ✊🏼🏁
Congratualtion, guys! Great video! You know...currently cafe racer and scramblers bikes have become fashionable again. It´s time to make a video about that!
great vid as always !!!
Excellent selection of bikes for new riders or those who actually actually prefer riding smaller capacity machines. Great job!
Yep, the FZ-07 is an awesome bike, so glad I picked one up
The transition from the FZ 07 to the Iron 883 was great!
I bought my first bike earlier this year. A 2017 DRZ400SM. I took the stock street tires off and put on Shinko 244s (knobbies). It can pretty much do everything now; not great at everything though. Plan is to swap in some ACT wide ratio gears, larger fuel tank, soft luggage and Britannia Composite front fairing with LED headlights and do a roadtrip up to Alaska next summer.
The transitions in this video are awesome!
great video guys! you guys are surely the best reviewers on youtube. Can you please do a video on iron 883 v/s 48? i am confused which one to go for. cheers!
Very well done video!
I got a 2015 fz07 and i love it ! 1st bike bought brand new , 1st ride on it i was already confident , very easy to drive and 0-60 is pretty fast ;)
Keep it going.....wonderful work.....enjoyed the iron 883 part of it
Love yalls videos. Any chance yall could do one about how to get into track days on a reasonable budget? I just went to my first one here at Jerez and it was amazing. As someone who's new to the activity, I think a video about the bare minimums to get involved and some good bike choices would really help alot of people out. Thanks and keep making great videos!
I agree with him the fzo7 is amazing I own one personally and I love it
I bought an MT07 and love every mile on it. The only downsides I’ve seen are small gas tank and weak front suspension.
Great video describing the main problem of motorcycling. Some days I want a sport bike, other days I want the rumble of a cruiser, and sometimes I want to tour. Can't have them all though. Maybe I can start a motorcycle co-op where we can swap bikes every day.
Thanks, I like watching your videos.
You guys are awesome! I rode an FZ-07 a while back and while the power was awesome, I saw myself in a passing window and noticed how huge I looked sitting on it. I'm 6'2 and with my larger frame I fit perfectly on the FZ-09, which is what I picked up yesterday. I'm glad I was able to find you guys after you left MotorTrend. Subscribing for more awesome content!
You should do $3k project bike challence.
thanks guy you open up my eyes on what kind of mc i will buy for my second bike.
excellent video quality and content
Wow, I love it when I see popular youtubers that film just down the street from me! Trabuco Canyon is awesome with all that diverse terrain/road to ride all in one place. Cooks corner is also where tons of bikers gather just to pit stop through those windy roads. I'm not a motorcycle rider myself but will soon be when the finances allow. You guys make great and informative videos.
Thanks for watching, and good catch on the locations! Hopefully we'll see you riding out on the road soon.
This deserves a whole lot more views and attention than it's having...
What a creative demonstration !!
top notch guys loved this video
Just awesome content. Saw this today
You two are THE BEST. We know that vids like this are a TON of work and we totally appreciate it! Long live your UA-cam channel!
As I tell everyone who asks...remember, your first bike does not have to be your last bike! Get one, ride it, sell it, get another :-)
Id watch this show on tv every day. Please never stop making these.
Gotta say, really a great video guys. Wish I would have found this channel earlier!
Great video - lots of info! Another bike that doesn't break the bank is the SV650S. Kinda partial because I own one :P
great vid guys
Best Way of Presentation ....i like it... Very much.. ...you are always just doing Great....
Great video. I still maintain that a dualsport/supermoto is probably the most forgiving, fun and still challenging way to get into two wheels.. and into a little bit of trouble :)
