  • BMW's new C600 Sport super scoot takes on Honda's half-and-half NC700X and Kawasaki's always-impressive Versys on this episode of On Two Wheels. Is there any way a scooter can be as good as a motorcycle? Ari says no, Zack says yes, and Editor In Chief Marc Cook tags along to make sure they don't kill each other.

    Oh, cmon, the Nc700 was made for a very specific customer: A2 license begginer in Europe. And if you pick a NC700S or X with the regular manual transmission, the only thing that separates it from a "real" motorcycle is that the CG is a bit low, and the revs dont go too high. But it IS, for all intents and purposes, a REAL motorcycle. Yeah, a slow one, so what? The Suzuki GS500 is probably just as slow, and it's a legend, because of it's ease of use, reliability, and fuel consumption. The NC700 adds boot space to the mix, so, what's not to love?.

      What does Ari being the "white guy" have to do with anything? It was a preference of how he liked to have his hair. Greeks were wearing their hair that way 3600 years ago. Historians and anthropologists have found evidence of the "do" in ancient Egypt, Germanic tribes, Vikings, Pacific Islanders, early Christians, the Aborigines and the New Guineans as well as the Somali, the Galla, the Maasai, the Ashanti and the Fulani tribes of Africa. Another words, people from all walks of life.

    I wish that people who review the NC bikes would STOP using the DCT version, and then rank it lower because of the transmission. So hard to find people that review the manual NCs, and most of them that do seem to like it. I'd like to see someone compare the Versys 650, Vstrom 650, and NC700 manual.

    • @BassOutcast
      @BassOutcast 2 роки тому

      They actually did a test like that in my country (it's in Hebrew though) where they compared the NC700X manual to a V-Strom 650 and Versys 650. The Versys came dead last, being buzzy at highway speeds, cramped and unrefined, though the best handling one. The V-Strom took the win (best gearbox, engine, plush suspension) but they said "The NC does everything the V-Strom does, just a tad slower. It is, however, twice as cheap to maintain and it is the most sensible purchase".

    Guess what.....
    I have them both ! Riding a NC700S, for those who are from the US, it's the naked version of the NC700X,since 2013 and I want to say it is the best all round motorcycle I ever had ! My other bike is the 2015 Versys 650 with the Kawasaki side cases and top box. I had the Z1000 before and traded it for the Versys since versatility counts more for me than pure power.And while the Versys can and will get you almost anywhere so can and will the Honda unless you put them side to side on speed unrestricted highway.On day to day riding they are absolutely on the same level ! And by the way maintenance costs are lower on the Honda in terms of service and fuel consumption !!!
    Safe rides !

      I have a Versys 650 '09, and am thinking of a '13 NC700X manual trans. Trying to find a vid to compare. What do you think of this for $3900 w/ 10k miles? 2013 Honda NC700X Garage kept, new tires, driving lights and grip heaters are isolated with a fuse block triggered off the ignition so no accidental dead battery. Crash bars, V Stream windshield, aftermarket exhaust, bark busters. Factory side panners, Honda upper trunk. ---10k miles $3900. Whatcha think? Too much $?

      Hey man, cool you ask me. I had to look at the date of my initial post, that was three years ago. Guess time flies....
      By the way I still have the NC700S and have now just recently passed 102.000 km and it still runs like day one. I don't have the Kawasaki Versys anymore. I sold it and bought a 2014 Honda NC750S with low km.
      Those bikes are really flawless and will serve you for a long time if you treat them well. Anyway to answer your question I think the price isn't too far off. Maybe you can try to get it down to $3500 but all in all they are worth the money.
      Keep an eye on the front and rear wheel bearings since those seem to fail around the 40.000 km mark.
      Hope that helps, safe rides 👍🏍

    The Versys should of strapped the back pack to the rear seat, I have carried them that way and no damage. The one bike I would of liked to see in there is the CB 500 X . On the motorcycles you can put side bags and a top box on to carry stuff, and then carry more than the scooter. I have ridden bough Bikes and scooters and love the bough but they are different, The advantage of the scooter is that as long as you stay above 70 kph you stay dry in the rain, and you have a dry place to keep your helmet. and gear. Who wants to carry there helmet and gear with them when shopping.

  • @freedomofmotion

    Fiddle with the clutch springs and weights and adjust the cvt to be tuned for acceleration.
    get its top end down to 85 but it's 0-60 will be so much more fun and usable.
    they typically tune scooters for emissions and mpg rather than fun.
    a few little tweaks and you can tune your scoot purely for 0-60 and have the ultimate city machine.

    I am looking into motorcycles as I am serious about getting one as I think about summer time starting to ever so slowly roll in.. The NC700 seems like it would be such a perfect bike for my first bike. Considering one of the main reasons why I did not want a motorcycle was because of shifting. Also everything I have heard when it comes to reviews are pretty positive. The only main negative for some people is it is not all that fast. But since I am no speed demon I think I would not care. Also that the seat for some people was uncomfortable. I really enjoyed this vid, idk why but I really felt like I went on a little road trip into the mountains with some buds on a bike.

    Americans don't like to admit it but scooters make more sense than motorcycles in the cities. Shifting in heavy traffic sucks. Plus these new Maxi Scooters can easily do highway speeds.

    • @TheDaedalx
      @TheDaedalx 7 років тому +7

      Plus riding in bad weather. Rain and cold protection makes year round riding possible, they always skip over that point.

    • @DiegoNovoa
      @DiegoNovoa 7 років тому +17

      It's not a matter of it is easier or more difficult. It's just a matter of convenience and practicality. If you do not live in the sunny California, but in cold and rainy winter in a big city in Europe, scooters add a huge amount of practicality. They are comfortable to ride, specially at slow speeds and between traffic lights and huge traffic jams on small streets, they offer wind and rain protection for the winter time and a very good storage at any time you need it. And the plus is that when you get into the highway on your daily commuting you can ride safely and at good speeds.
      Not everyone wants / needs a R machine... and Scooters are for cities and daily commuting... taking it to a mountain road and complaining that does not perform as a proper bike is an absolute unfair comparison. They could have put a Harley Davidson Iron 883 in the same comparison to see how it performs on the canyons against the other two.
      We could discuss if the price is fair or not, but cannot compare the practicality of a scooter with a naked by going to the hills.

    • @bcs2em625

      It was a bit irritating that for most of the video all the Versys rider could seem to say bad about the BMW was "Yeah but it's a scooter & I'm embarrassed to be seen with it". That seems to be the go-to American argument-- no logic, facts, good reasons, etc, just "Hey it's a scooter & it's not cool". It wasn't until the end of the video that they tackled REASONS WHY the BMW wasn't up to par on certain things. But when folks just dismiss stuff out of hand based on prejudice is just stupid. Tell me why. For my money you can talk all day about how great "engaging" the road with a clutch is (although most folks never seem to care anymore that they don't do so in their cars), but shifting in bumper to bumper traffic like in Europe or Asia sucks. But then again those places don't see bikes as unnecessary "toys", but as a legitimate transportation alternative, where the ability to pack stuff and deal with weather protection is a must. No "jumping in the truck" for them.

    • @vwgti303
      @vwgti303 7 років тому +10

      First off, don't lump all Americans together, it's small-minded, just as if I were to say "all Europeans..". Secondly, scooters are gaining ground here in the cities, at least where I live in Denver. I see them everywhere and every dealer I go to says they're selling a ton of them. Fuck, I have one, and I live in the suburbs.

    • @bcs2em625
      @bcs2em625 7 років тому +2

      I only wish that were true. I have lived in major cities in six states, and have seen only small scooters 150cc or under "gaining ground" and even then only in the more "liberal cities" like Denver, Honolulu, NYC, Seattle, etc. Maxi-scooters over 250 cc are a RARE sight not only here in Texas, but all over "fly-over country". Go to Wisconsin, Arkansas, or West Virginia with a scooter and YOU WILL be much hated on or at least looked at sideways. Believe me, I know from experience.

  • @kieronwheeler3087
    @kieronwheeler3087 5 років тому +1

    If I'm completely honest I had more fun on my little 50cc 2 stroke scooter in a year than I've had on my current 4 stroke 125 bike of 3 years, and I would consider buying my scooter back, however I don't think I could ever use it as practical transport. It was wider than my current bike, it lacked the roll on power, and acceleration of my 125, despite having a very similar hp output, and it just didn't handle as nicely as my current bike. I know that a bigger luxury scooter may solve most of these problems, but I just can't get away from the love of shifting gears. As far as I'm concerned I have a top box, which is bigger than the under-seat storage on my scooter, I have a 12l (about 2.5 imp gallon) fuel tank, compared to the 4.5l (about 1 imp gallon) that the scooter had, and my bike has been a reliable, year round work horse, whilst my scooter destroyed the transmission and engine 4 times in 3 months. So I won't deny that scooters can be great fun, but I don't see myself having the need for another one, unless I just wanted to mess around with it (make it faster, turn it into a field bike, use it as a backup bike) but it would still be hugely impractical, given the higher insurance premiums caused by rising numbers of scooter thefts around England.

    This is kind of silly, fairing and windshields for city use? 600cc for city use? The only thing remotely city about any of them is the storage compartment on the NC700.
    ... but then I don't see you riding through the city, I see you riding suburbia then twisty road to a picnic lunch. WTFBBQ? I get it, if you want to go do that, it's your video, but don't pretend you're doing a city bike shootout because that's not at all what this video is.
    For a city bike you want a few things:
    - Narrow enough to split lanes with that little bit extra space
    - Really good rearview mirrors - Yes they can be changed but this isn't about building or converting something
    - Superior low speed control, you'll be benefiting from that a lot in the city
    - More upright riding position. Speed isn't a factor but your view of traffic around you is.
    - Low end torque, no sense in shifting more than you have to as traffic slows and speeds up.
    - Seat height low enough for *most* people. You'll be stopping and starting more often, it only makes sense.
    - HIGH visibility brake lights. It may make the difference between you reaching your destination or instead becoming a sandwich on someone's rear bumper at a stop light.
    - VERY flickable. When that car near you doesn't see you, which is half the time, you need to be able to get out of their way ASAP. Figuring you'll just curse at them for their bad driving doesn't pan out when you're on the ground watching them drive away.
    There's no point in contrasting bikes if you're not aiming for the market audience instead of just stating "we're purists so we like the one most like a motorcycle". That wastes everyone's time.

    The Versys is pointless as a city bike, big point of going around the city is being able to walk away from the bike not looking like you actually came with it. It is really annoying to go around carrying a helmet in your hand and sweating in a bike jacket. With a scooter, you often can fit both the jacket and the helmet under the seat. The bmw or the nc are great because of the storage, you can have fun while commuting and have zero drawbacks after you park and walk away. The versys will force you to keep your jacket on and carry your helmet, not even mentioning that you would always look like you just got back from an off road trail...

    Yea the Versys is their choice? Just wait till you go to adjust the valves on the Versys----NIGHTMARE---the NC can be done by you. It's the engine that has sold me on the NC=ease of maint. and low center of gravity along with great MPG!!!!

    I've never needed or even had the desire to transport a pizza on my bike... I have been annoyed by having to carry my helmet around once I got to my destination though. Does the scooter have storage for a helmet?

      Never had the desire? Or never thought to have the desire because you never had the capability? 🤔 Scooters can carry the pizza AND the beer, plus your date!

      That's why I added a rear top box to my versys. It holds my helmet, riding gear, rain gear, tire repair kit and tool kit. Plus room for supplies.

      I mean I did have to carry 3/4 of a leftover pizza from work home xD
      And it was a bigger pizza but I folded the box in half and it fit perfectly in the nc700x storage compartment :D

    I kinda wish BMW made a motorcycle with that sized engine, those sporty looks, and some urban practicality. BMW mostly make 800-1200cc GT bikes. The Honda NC700 & 750 is a commuter bike, nothing fancy, room for lunch and your helmet and exceptional fuel mileage. The Versys now has better looks, decent performance and showa forks, and it's set up for some panniers and a top box. I'd buy the versys because it's the most versatile of these 3.

    Internal storage is fine as far as it goes, but if you really want to carry something it means a rack. And I mean a _good_ rack, like the original Honda Trail 90, not the namby-pamby little things that pass for a rack these days. Wearing a backpack while riding sucks -- you need a safe place to bungie it down.

    Is this actually a video about which bike is best under city driving conditions? No. Was it enjoyable anyway? Yes, until someone said "'Za" I think I sprained something cringing.
