- In this step by step video I show how to replace piston and jug on a recon. Have a 250 that’s smoking real bad and/or has low compression, well this is the video for you. This works for 1997-2014 Recon 250, Sportrax 250 and Trx250EX.
Also show how to adjust valves.

Hello Brother!! Man... I TRULY cant thank you enough for taking the time to explain how to perform this top end rebuild. This was my very first top end rebuild on my sons 2019 Honda Recon that he buried in the sand, and decided to start it back up and keep riding :( Can you say smoke................. :( Anyhow, your video got me through it!!! I cant tell you how many times I had to pause and watch the steps you took LOL :) And the fact that you went back and edited the video to show where you went wrong was SO MUCH appreciated!! I could honestly go on and on with Thanks, but you've spent enough time making this video, no need to read a book here LOL :) May The Lord Bless you for the way in which this video has helped so many others, including me and my family!! 🙏
Tip for others doing this job: If you choose to remove the oil check bolt as described in this video to make sure oil is flowing properly, dont rev the engine like it did... No joke, I was standing on the spark plug side of my quad, and the gas tank was just propped up above the engine which blocked my view of the port hole. Next thing I know, a half a quart or MORE of oil was on the floor... :( .. Hope that helps somone. God Bless 🙏
Forgot to mention that the kit in the video was no longer available, so I went with the Niche kit on Amazon for $80. Good kit and so far so good. No real hard rides at all as of yet though, so no telling how long it will last.

@@martingonsalez6635 there may not be a kit. However you can have cylinder checked at machine shop. Two options, hone cylinder and new rings and piston. Or bore cylinder and oversized rings and piston.

Thank you very much! I was able to give life to my 2005 TRX250TM with the instructions and the same kit. I did have trouble with the piston wrist clip but used a socket 2x threaded rod connectors and a bolt. As I tightened the bolt it pulled the wrist clip right into the socket. The wrist clip was melted to the piston. So lots of pressure. The threaded rod bent.
I think im going to try rebuilding the one i bought for my daughter that "Ran great but we parked it now it wont start" after watching this lol. thanks for the video.

You might want to mention replacing the locating dowel pins in the cylinder. I found a couple of videos on how to make a tool for removing them. One was low tech, the other high tech made with a lathe and mill. Basically the low tech way was to bore a nut out to the diameter of the locating dowel, then slit the side with a hacksaw and use a pair of pliers over to grab the dowel without damaging it.
I did a top end on 2001 recon. 97-01 is different than 02 and up. If you look at piston in your video it's for the 02 and up. The bevel edge is polished from smacking the cylinder head. You need to chuck it up in the lath and trim the bevel edge off the top and trim bottom shirt of the piston as the wrist pins are different heights. You can use the 02 and up cylinder and piston after piston modification

I watched your video and I still managed to forget the clutch is reverse thread, stripped out the threads big time. Ordered a die for it hopefully it’s salvageable
The one I just pulled down didn't have base gasket...My guess someone has been into it before and used "that thin sealant" to raise the compression by moving the piston higher in the cylinder. I've seen that done with modified chainsaws....

Personally, I'd never install dry rings on a dry piston when a film of oil will make things go much easier, and you can be sure that fresh oil has reached the rings at least ONCE in their lives

Just watched. Very nice and easy to follow. What about the oil pump? How did you determine it was bad? That would be helpful when those of us look at used bikes.
Engine had a upper end tick, on top of valve cover there's a oil pressure check bolt. Pull bolt off and start engine...oil should come spraying out. If it trickles out or nothing at all, oil pump issue.
Just an fyi on the rocker cover 2 of the bolts are longer than the other watch out for that when ur taking everything apart

Awesome video! Im getting ready to rebuild my 2019 recon top end. My one question is when you are cleaning everything or washing everything up before reassembly what are you using to clean it? Or are you just wiping it out with a rag?
I have a 2020 and a 2021 recon that are both using oil....how did the rebuild on your 2019 go? Was your cam ok any?...I'm actually surprised they are having issues so soon...I change the oil every 15 to 20 hours and use honda oil

I just bought a 2002 Honda recon it's having low compression 75 to 80 there was an aftermarket carburetor put on it I changed it to factory one seen this video is wondering if you have the link to the kit you bought could not find it in the comments
I have a 2007 honda trx 250 it was running good until my grandson run it on first gear for a while now is not turning on it just turning but sounds like it doesn't have a compression. Do you know what maybe wrong with it?
I have a some chrome "tubes" on my Honda Recon motor that kind of twist around and go into the head. Anyone know what they are for or what they go too

I did mîne but when I put everything back together my carb just spits out a lot of air and gas and acts like it don’t have that much compression any thoughts?
Pushrod may not be sitting in rocker correctly, which would hold valve open. Seen this happen from not being at tdc.

Can you use wd-40 indtead of ultra slick
No wd40 is not good for break in oil. You want something thick and tacky like ultra slick. It’s to protect parts from dry start.
Where are you located? I have a 2000 Honda Recon that needs a motor rebuild. I don't have the time to work on it, if you are close to me I would like to see if you can rebuild it for me.
